  • Time Machine messed up my new internal hard drive. Help?

So I upgraded my internal hard drive to 1 TB and restored it with time machine backup. However, when I started my laptop, it kept giving me a "debugger called: <panic>" I am not sure if my time machine messed it up or it was the hard drive. Can anyone help me with this?
Also for more information, when it kept restarting and rebooting on its own, I could not control my own keyboard so I could not go to safe mode or anything like that. If you need to know more information, you can ask and I'll provide you with more information if you could help me out.
And I cannot post up the whole code cause it would disappear in 3 seconds.

  • Free agent drive installation help

When I try to reformat my external free agent drive I get an error message saying that it quit unexpectedly. Anyone know the problem?
I can't use my drive until it is reformatted.

That's not how you format the drive. Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Driver installation help.

I just got my V570 back, so I was wondering if there were any drivers that I should download from first getting this machine. Not too familiar with drivers but I went and looked up the ones for this machine and there are a bunch. Thanks
    Solved!

    Hi Fearlessflyer3,
    Is everything working okay now?
You just got it back.  From where?  Service?  What did they do?  When did you originally get your machine?
If everything is working okay, don't be too quick to update stuff.  If you go installing a bunch of updates and then something doesn't work right, you're not going to know which ones screwed you up.
If you do decide to update drivers, set a restore point in Windows so if something gets messed up, you can go back to where it worked.
Did you burn restore discs yet?  If you didn't, do so, you'll be glad you did later on.  Do a full backup onto external media so you can be secure in the belief that you can get your system back to where it is now in case something bad happens. ie: failed hard drive, virus.

  • [SOLVED]New Arch Linux ISO Installation Help.

    Hi All,
I am trying to install Arch Linux using new ISO. For some reason I am unable to log into Arch Forums on Windows and I am writing this on my tablet. I will add more info (proper quote, etc.) as soon as I am able to log in a laptop browser. That being said I am trying to install Arch using new ISO. Here is what I did.
    Partition using cfdisk /, /home , /swap and /boot.
    Format all these in ext4.
Create folders in mnt - root, home, swap, boot.
    mount partitions in mnt folders.
    Pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
    Error
ERROR: /mnt is not a mount point!
I install in /mnt/root which probably doesnt touch other partitions like home boot and swap.
I follow other steps on installation wiki and reboot takes me back to windows.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

You don't need a root folder. /mnt is the root mount point. Before you mount boot and home:
    mount /dev/sdax /mnt
where "x" is the number of your /root partition.
    then
    mkdir /mnt/boot
    mount /dev/sdax /mnt/boot
    mkdir /mnt/home
    mount /dev/sdax /mnt/home
(replace "x" in all the /dev/sdax with the correct partitions.)
    Error
ERROR: /mnt is not a mount point!
you should have stopped here and posted or tried to figure out what you did wrong.
The edited Beginner's Guide is very clear about this. You should read it.

  • New drivers won't work for X-Fi Xtreme Gamer

I use Windows XP SP 2 with my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer.
I used the Device Manager to uninstall my old drivers (v2.5.0006), rebooted, cancelled the Windows new-hardware popup, and installed the new drivers (v2.5.0008). I had no sound immediately after the installation, though I think I should have heard mouse-clicking sounds and sounds that accompany opening and closing windows from my desktop and Windows Explorer. After restarting after the installation, I still had no sound.
To restore sound, I uninstalled the new drivers and reinstalled the old ones.

I have solved my own problem. The trouble was that using the Device Manager to uninstall my old drivers did not work. Apparently a file that needed to be deleted was not deleted, and that file prevented the new drivers from working. I finally got the new drivers to work by using the following procedure, which except from some notes I have inserted, was obtained by email from Creative support:
    1. Go to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs and un-install all listings related to your audio card. Do not restart your computer when prompted so.
    2. Go to Control Panel, and switch to Classic View. Click System, Hardware tab, Device Manager button and delete all sound cards entries in Sound, Video and Game Controllers as well as any previous sound card entries from the Device Manager. ?Note: Personally, to get to Device Manager, I don?t follow these directions. I do this: click the Windows Start button + E, look to the left and right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
    3. Reboot the computer and cancel out of any driver installation if you are prompted. Insert the Creative Sound Blaster installation CD into your CD-ROM dri've. Exit from the installation wizard if it autoruns.
    4. Click Start, Run and then Browse. Browse to Z:\Audio\Drivers\CTZAPXX.EXE, where Z represents the CD Rom Dri've. Choose YES if you receive a prompt "Overwrite existing shared creative audio driver files?" NOTE: This CTZAPXX.EXE file could not be found on my X-Fi Xtreme installation disk by using the Z:\Audio\Drivers\CTZAPXX.EXE path. I had do use the Windows Search engine to do a search on my X-Fi Xtreme installation disk. After finding it, I highlighted the CTZAPXX.EXE program, opened it, and continued with these driver-uninstallation instructions. This seems to be a critical step. If your installation disk doesn't have this file, or if you don't have an installation disk, I suggest doing a Web search for CTZAPXX.EXE. It's a Creative Update Utility, so I don't think it will harm your computer. But I use Windows XP, and I don't know anything about Vista.
    5. Select Driver un-installation for WDM drivers and click OK.
    6. When prompted to restart, say No.
    7. Click Start, Run, type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
    8. Check the box next to Selecti've Startup and deselect Load Startup Items.
    9. Select the SERVICES tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services.
    10. Uncheck all results and click OK.
    1. Browse to the C:\Temp folder and C:\Windows\TEMP (if it exists) - all files and folders in the temp folder need to be either deleted or moved to a new folder. ?NOTE: I had to go to my C:\Windows\TEMP file to do this step. Also, I took care to copy and paste all of these TEMP files to a new folder before I tried deleting them. Then I deleted all the Windows\TEMP files that I could. Some would not delete. Indeed some of these files could not be copy and pasted to the new folder. But that was okay. I just left alone those files I could not copy and delete, and I proceeded to delete all of the other files. The TEMP files that I could not delete did not affect my uninstallation of old sound drivers or the installation of new sound drivers.
    2. Browse to Program Files, Creative and delete the Sound Blaster Folder - if you get a file that won't delete, right click on the file, click Properties and clear all the attributes. The file should then be able to be deleted.
    3. Empty the Recycle Bin, and reboot the computer.
    4. If you wish to install your new sound drivers, do so now. Otherwise, go to the next step. If you do install you new drivers?which I would do?don?t restart after the installation. Do the next two steps first.
    5. Click on Start, Run. Type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
    6. Select Normal Startup, and press the OK button.
    7. Reboot the computer
    8. At this point I copy-pasted all those Windows\TEMP files from my new folder back to their proper place in Windows\TEMP. Then I deleted the new folder. While restoring these TEMP files to the Windows\TEMP file, I got a couple of messages telling me these files already existed. I clicked No. That is, I did NOT replace or overwrite any existing files in the Windows\TEMP folder.
    9. The new sound drivers should now be working.

  • X-Fi Xtreme Gamer - NO SO

I just installed a new Xtreme Gamer X-FI, at first I had sound, after one song the sound stopped working, I re-booted, uninstalled and re-installed the latest drivers, nothing works. HELP. At one point a loud high pitched sound was coming from the speakers.

I have 4gb ram, I got the white noise problem. When I first installed it, I got white noise, didn't work when reinstalling drivers etc. I got a tip to move it to another PCI-slot, and it worked... Until I rebooted my computer. Same white noise again. Tried countless of times to reinstall drivers and so on. And yes, ofcourse I have the onboard soundcard inactivated.
Now today, I tried taking out 2gb of my 4gb ram, and guess what, it works.
Now what the.. !?! Are you telling me my computer is too GOOD for my expensi've soundcard? Usually problems appear if you don't have ENOUGH RAM, not if you have "too much"... I'm so tired of this. Am I supposed to run with just 2gb ram, when I have 4. Or am I supposed to use my onboard soundcard when I've bought an expensi've Creative soundcard?

  • HT201372 used this to make a bootable copy for a new hard drive installation. copied the install find but gave error code 110 when making the disk bootable.. Any help in what this code is

Used createinstallmedis to make a copy of the Mavericks app for use in a new hard drive install.. Copied find but gave error code 110 and failed to make the flash drive bootable.. Any help in what errror code means?

Did you partition and format the flash drive first? See the following:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

  • X-Fi Xtreme Gamer on Windows 7: Installation details

? On X-Fi Xtreme gamer support page there is officially only driver for W7.
What about Alchemy, Console Launcher etc? Is it the same as W Vista?
When I run Creative Software AutoUpdate it says "Critical" for several versions of Console Launcher. The most newer one is the smallest one in MBs. So what should I install. All versions, or just the last one?
    Thanx.
Edit: Creative made this really confusing. First of all,? there is no THX console when I download and install driver from web. So, I need to insert Creative disc with old drivers, start the installation and choose only THX to install. It's really annoying. Why don't they implement thx in console installation, or driver installation? Second thing is about AutoUpdate. It says that I need to install all Console Launchers, but in fact every newer version doesn't update the old one, but removes it.

I have major problems with my Xfi in Win 7 64 right now as well. The Console works fine from Vista if you want to download that. Creative is being very lazy about updating there drivers at this point as you can see from all the upset posts in the Win 7 forums. Just hang tight like the rest of us :*(

  • Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

    Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
    My other resources include:
    - two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
    - one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
    - Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
    - a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
    - a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
    - I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
    - A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
    Here's my setup:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
    1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
    2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
    3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
    4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
    5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
    6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
    7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
    8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
    9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
    10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
    Thanks!

Howdy slowpoke43, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
LOL, if your faking it you're the best!
    1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
    2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
    3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.
    4. Yes, not long, A/C power is great.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
    6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
    7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
    8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.
    9. Yeah, but again with you doing everything right from the gitgo, I can't picture that happening.
    10. Yes indeed, the hangup with yours is that it only holds 2GB of RAM... a pain in 10.5 & up IME.
Again let me say... GONGRATS, I've never ever seen anybody so well prepared & informed despite your diffidence!

  • Live! SB022x (or any OEM model) owners with driver installation problems ... [Help 'maybe' he

    Hi
Problems to get 'drivers'/'driver updates' installed for your Li've! or other SB models on XP or W2k system?
If ctzapxx.exe method didn't work either for you, have you tried 'forced' driver installation yet? If not here is what you can do.
NOTE: THIS METHOD DOES NOT WORK W/ ALL DRIVER PACKAGES, BECAUSE OF THE USED INSTALLER IS NOT THE SAME (ctcomp.dat is not available on those)
    . download [url="http://members.aol.com/dvdking200/Pub/ctcomp.exe">this utility[/url]
    2. download driver package (or installation ISO/rip) you want to install and extract it to your HD (you can also install Audigy X drivers for your Li've! card if you like)
    3. run ctcomp.exe and point it to look from
    - ..\Audio\Setup -folder, found as a subfolder in folder you extracted the ISO/rip
    - 'main folder' (for. ex. AUD_EAX4DRV_0303) when you're installing driver update (data.cab must exist on that folder)
    4. press Patch button
    5. install your drivers by running setup.exe located
    - at same ..\Audio\Setup -folder when setting up from extracted ISO
    - at 'main' folder when you're installing driver update

The reason i said this should be a sticky is that these boards move so fast that its impossiable for new comers to keep up with threads that have AWESOME tips that may or may not help but how many of us have accually gone through every post in the last 60 days to try and find a fix? I know I have not, but in the end you need to try everything you can.
Something like this is not on the Creative FAQ data base so the only people to know about this possiable fix are the few who catch it in time.
In my experience there is ALWAYS more than way to do things and 0 ways to get it to work with 20 other methods to run it. Thats a lot of ways to do the one thing. So unless we have a huge data base with every possiable fix, method or forceiable way to do something then more and more people will get really upset that Creative offer no help.
Take the way Creative say to un-install drivers, man, this for the most part never works, so something like this may be the only way to get it to work for some people.
What I do is though, I copy a thread like this one and will pass it on to others if need be. Ofcause with all credit to the original poster and I never pass it off as my fix and/work.
I I like to cover every possiable aspect to do something. Ya know what i mean

  • XFI Xtreme Gamer New Old Prob

Hi guys first off an apology as this is going to be a long ass post
Right i have a problem with my XFI card which i know is not a new problem, but for me it is first off a bit of background..
My old machine which was as follows:
    DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR-Expert
    AMD 64 3700+/4200+ X2
2 GIG OCZ Platinum EL DDR 3200
    2 X 7600GT in SLI
XFI Xtreme Gamer (both old and new version)
with the old version (no heatsink) big card i couldnt get anything to work couldnt get drivers to install and sometimes couldnt even boot to windows. after plenty of arsing about with drivers bios update and bios settings i got fed up with it and like a muppet i bought another Xtreme gamer (new one with heatsink), and to be fair everything worked like a dream, i have read over these forums multiple times and basically read the main problem with these cards was when paired up with a NF4 motherboard so even tho i was annoyed at having a dud card which no body wanted to claim responcibility for, i was quietly content with the fact i had a working XFI card on a NF4 board. All was great the sound was excellent with my speakers and fatalty headset, games like bf242 FEAR etc sounded better than they ever had before.
Then i came into some money and decided for a big pc overhaul which was as follows
    ASUS M3A32-MVP-Deluxe
    AMD64 6400+
4 GIG Corsair XMS TwinX 6400
    Nvidia 8800GT
I decided as it had worked so well up to now and the fact id had it less than a year, i kept the same XFI card
Got everything setup and installed latest drivers bios and everything, then i hit a problem. ANY GAME that claims to take advantage of the XFI etc has crackling problems. in bf242 when artillery goes off anywhere near me the crackling is INSANE. explosions in FEAR result in INSANE crackling. now this new board i use is a QUAD crossfire board socket AM2+ etc all the latest stuff and yet still this crackling problem persists 2 YEARS+ after the card came out.
now i have gone thru so many posts on so many forums and absolutly EVERYTHING i have tried has done NOTHING to resolve my problem.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME? CREATIVE IM LOOKING IN YOUR DIRECTION...
your company has had alot of money out of me in the last few years so some help would be appreciated.
so many of your customers have gone to other companies for soundcards since the XFI appeared and i will be one of them if i cannot get a result here. what annoys me is WE the CONSUMER pay YOUR wages, without us you will not exist so PLEASE HELP ME HERE. as i will no longer tollerate this. i think its pretty simple fix this long standing problem or A:give us our money back or B:replace this defunct piece of hardware with something that WORKS. ist not much to ask.
before anyone tries to blame my board as the problem i know people with just about every chipset going that has had problems with these cards its all over the forums. i have also tried a SB0220 5. li've and a audigy card in this exact machine with NO PROBLEMS at all. so clearly there is a problem with the XFI?
ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED but i would like to hear from someone from creative here as user input is getting me (and probably alot of other people) NOWHERE
    LEE ?

just wanted to let you know how to solve this or any other problem with this XFI or any other creative card?
    do what i did?
TAKE IT OUT YOUR PC AND USE SOMETHING ELSE?
as soon as i did this and wnent to onboard sound maX HD audio all my problems went aways?
that was my last creative sound card thats for sure?
anyways Auzentec have got some nice cards?

  • How do I migrate firefox settings from a 4.0 FF install on my old main drive, now connected as an external drive, to my new main hard drive's 4.0 FF installation?

My old computer's motherboard cooked, but the hard drive was undamaged. I removed it, and converted it to an external hard drive using cables, and now want to migrate the bookmarks, passwords, and settings to my new computer's main hard drive installation of Firefox.

See [[Managing Profiles]] which explains how to recover data from your profile on the old drive.
