Newbie Applet ?

Hello all,
Currently I am in process of implementing a Nokia Checkpoint firewall ( What a P.O.S. ). Part of this involves requiring internal users to authenticate to a web served authentication form on the firewall in order to route through the firewall to one of our remote sites. I was able to get the process working with the native code. But the interface and flow of it is very clumsy. If we make any changes to the server side code checkpoint will void our service contract. Man that stinks. They release software with an ugly and clumsy interface... and then tell you that your support contract will be voided if you try to modify the code. I was hoping you could help me with the following question in relation to this. If you can provide me with some sample code ( Hand holding please ) I would appreciate it. I have a deadline I am working against and this piece is the last stop.
The following is the current process:
1.User goes to https://firewallAuthpage.com:901
2.Screen 1 prompts for username input
3.Click submit
4.Screen 2 prompts for password input
5.Click submit
6.Screen 3 displays notification of successful or failed authentication.
I was thinking a client side Java applet could be used to streamline the process without altering the server side code. Logically the applet would behave as follows:
1.User activates loaded Java applet.
2.Applet input box appears asking for Username and Password
3.Click OK and applet will then pass username and password to https://firewallAuthpage.com:901. (Screen 1 & 2 )
4.Applet box displays result of authentication:
A.If successful authentication applet will display successfully authentication message from screen3 and then automatically minimize into background
B.If authentication fails the applet Username and Password input box will reappear. After X number of failed authentications the applet will notify of failure and instruct them to call helpdesk for further assistance.
Right now I am considering line sniffing the current process to see what the http:// post URL strings look like. Then I would take this information to build a client applet using Swing or AWT that would ask for username and password which would then be URlencoded using the .net libraries and finally formed into a https URL string that the web server expects. Does this make sense? My only experiance with Jave is an intro class I took in 1998?!!!
Thanks, Weggy

I will try to get you some code, but I once wrote a program that read from the URL and parsed that text. That is like you said you should sniff the http calls and then mimic those in your applet.
In my program I was talking to a cgi script on the server, mail cgi. I wrote to the URL the whole http string and then read the output from the cgi/URL. Like I said I will try to dig up the bits of code.
Meanwhile look at the libraries to write and read from a httpconnection like a filestream.

  • Simplified Chinese in JRE (US-version)

    If you are using JRE international version, the Chinese characters will
    be displayed correctly in the applet. But if you are using JRE(US-version),
    bad, event cannot start the applet ( an unsupportedencodingexception
    throwed out).
    I don't want to force the people to reinstall their JRE to support my
    applet, so, is there any way easy to make my applet running smoothly
    in all the java environment?
    That really makes me headache.

    None short of the following...
    I'd assume that you package up your applet classes in a JAR file (at least that's how I always did it back when I were a humble newbie applet author... ah, those were the days...) ;-)
    Find the encoding classes you need within i18n.jar, and add them to your applet JAR file. This way, they should at least be guaranteed of being in the applet's classpath and possibly working.
    Other than that, it's likely off to download the international JRE with your users. :-(
    Hope that helps!

  • Newbie Q: Where do I find "Powers of 10" Applet?

    Dear Java Brewers:
    I am a Total Newbie; I just downloaded some free software to view a website, and the Registration Process concluded with providing me an example of the Applet: "Powers of 10"...which I would like to find again...???
    Just in case you haven't seen it: it is an 'animation' sequence from
    Deep Space/Astronomical views to stepped-down (by powers of 10) views leading to Earth views leading to a tree in Florida, a leaf, and then
    molecular/atomic views.
    If anyone can help me "find" this Java Applet, I thank you in advance.
    Sincerely new and newbie,
    Phineas St. George
    [email protected]
    ps: you can email me directly, if you like...

    Dear Dr. Clap :-)
    Thank you! Yes, this is exactly what I was looking for.
    (told you I was a newbie: I was so caught-up in searching
    java.sun.com links for it, I FORGOT to check Google.
    duhhhh.... :-)
    This Forum is a great resource even for Dummies...
    Thanks again...I'll see you on the Forum.

  • Java Studio Applet Newbie Tutorials?

    Hello,
    I am a newbie to Java Studio and java in general. However, I do have a vague idea of java thanks to my C++ programming experience.
    I am interested mainly in building java applets with Java Studio Enterprise. Can anyone please direct me to some good tutorials for developing applets with Java Studio, preferebly with "swing". (The only tutorials I could find were for web applications or portlets or things other than applets)
    Thanks a bundle,
    Aviv.

  • [NEWBIE] How to open a frame from an Applet?

    Hi, I'm trying to open a JFrame from an Applet. Basically, I would like that, once the user selects an option from a JMenu, a Frame would be shown with a text box where user could type some content.
    I built both the Applet and the Frame, and singularly they work. When I execute the main method from the JFrame, the window appears, but when I execute something like the following from the applet:
    MyFrame mf = new MyFrame();
    mf.setVisible(true);nothing is shown. I'm sure that I don't know something, but I just started with applets.
    Thanks for any help,
    Marco

    If MyFrame is a subclass of JFrame, then it should not
    make any difference.
    What do you need the JFrame for? Can this be done
    using another "screen" by using a CardLayout?From a menu, when the user selects 'Start game' I need a text box coming out so that the user can insert a word. This word should then evaluate an instance member of the Applet.

  • Applet Security help for a newbie

    I have an applet that works as an IRC client, still needs a lot of work. I have the basics working, but before I continue fixing it up I need some help. I've searched all over the forums, and my lack of Java knowhow leaves me confused.
    I have no idea how to use the forte debugger or the J++ debugger, so i'm building the classes everytime and testing them in IE on my own machine.
    I got this error first:
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission irc.enterthegame.com resolve)
    so I did a lot of searching and found that by adding the following lines to my java.policy file in my program files\java\j2re1.4.0\lib\security folder that it would work:
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:80", "connect,accept,resolve";
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:6667", "connect,accept,resolve";
    Unfortunately if I want to test my applet on another computer or just use it, it means I have to add these lines on every machine I want to use. I think.
    So I did some more searching on here...and now I think I have to sign my applet. I followed the instructions from this link http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/qow/archive/167/index.jsp
    And that all went well. But what do I do now? I took out those two permission lines from my java.policy file and it's back to square one. Do I need to do something with the .jar file that I created? Can someone give me a hand here? Thanks, I appreciate it

    Is this question really hard or something?

  • Saving Applet display as an image... Java newb

    Hello,
    I'm using wirefusion3D to display and configure 3D objects on a website I've been developing. The only thing it lacks is the ability to save out an image of the current display, which I need to do in order to place those images on a pdf invoice.
    It does, however, have the ability to include custom java code within the applet, so I would like to create a function that will take a snapshot of the current rendered applet display and save that snapshot as a bitmap image on the server. I'm new to Java (I'm a PHP/Javascript guy), and have had no luck finding anything about how this would be done. I'm not really sure what to search for, as I don't really know what java functions/classes deal with this sort of thing.
    I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance

    1. If all the drawing is taking place in one J/Component, you can construct a BufferedImage, obtain a reference to its associated Graphics and call paint/Component passing the Graphics reference as parameter. Then save the image to a file.
    2. java.awt.Robot#createScreenCapture returns a BufferedImage which is a snapshot of the screen.

  • Java programming applet issue newbie help

    hello
    i am a student taking an intro to OOP course using java. i have textMate and blue J as java editing environments. i have successfully managed a few lessons but now i am having trouble with applets. my applet source code will run in blue j but not in textmate and i think the reason has to do with the applet extension. first when i run the program successfully in blue jay it utilizes the sun.applet.main environment to display the applets output. but in textmate the identical code generates an error which i finally have a some information about why?
    the error in textmate reads
    :exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: main
    i am not sure whether this has to do with the import java.awt.*: or just the public void paint(Graphics g) method (code Below)
    the eventual intended output of the applet is to a web browser via an html document which calls the java applet but when i run this html document both firefox and safari display blank pages.
    i am on macpro with the latest java version - just downloaded last week
    is there some unique import statement to utilize import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*; in mac os or ???

  • Newbie: Is the CMS output HTML or Java applets?

    Hi!
    I am looking for what software to buy: Microsoft or Oracle.
    In that regard, I see that Java is the development language. Does this mean that the web-interface for clients is based on Java applets, or does the Java-application just generate HTML-code like asp.NET, php and similar server-side languages?
    Thanks!

    The old Oracle 9iFS web interface was based on Java and JSP, and as such, was an HTML-based interface. It did not use applets.
    The new Oracle CMSDK will include a web starter application sample (with source code) also based on Java and JSP, which is also an HTML-based interface that does not use applets.
    The CMSDK is a development platform, and you could write a web interface based on Java applets if you wanted to, or based on HTML technologies such as servlets (J2EE) or JSP. You can also write standalone client software in any language that communicates with the CMSDK server using a protocol, such as HTTP. You may define your own protocol and write your own protocol server (in Java), or you may use an existing protocol, like WebDAV/HTTP.
    See the CMSDK developer's guide for more information.

  • Newbie help needed with Applet

    I am having a problem with the following Applet. I have highlighted it in bold.
    How can I ensure that all of the conditions are met regardless of the order they are inserted on the graph,within the program?
    At the moment I have to do them in the exact order they are in the code in order to get the "Winner" message.
    Also if I insert an image at any time at the point if(x >= 290 && x <= 350 && y >= 290 && y <= 350) I also receive the "Winner" message. I realise this happens because it is the last line of code in this statement.
    However I am very new to this and dont know how to fix it. Indeed I dont even know if this is the correct way to do this.
    Hope this makes sense.
    Any help would be very much appreciated

    Since your code is heavilly dependant on which square is clicked on I'd define a class extending JComponent to represent a square. You can make this an inner class, which would simplify access to other squares etc. Then lay these out in your JPanel, and each will have it's own paint method which will paint it with or without a pawn.
    At the same time you add all these as a two dimensional array for logical access. Each square has (or is) it's own mouseListener so that you can let awt figure out which you clicked on.
    private static final int CELL_SIZE=50;
    private static final int BOARD_SIZE= 8;
    private class Square extends JComponent implements MouseListener {
        public boolean hasPawn;
        private Square(int row, int col) {
             Rectangle where = new Rectangle(col * CELL_SIZE, row * CELL_SIZE,
    CELL_SIZE, CELL_SIZE);
            setBounds(where);
           addMousListener(this);
       public void addPawn() {
         if(!hasPawn) {
           hasPawn = true;
           repaint();
      public void paint(Graphics g) {
    } // end of inner class
    Square[][]board = new Square[BOARD_SIZE][BOARD_SIZE];}

  • Applet newbie question

    Hello
    I have a class that compiles and executes fine. What do I have to do to have the System.out.println commands show in the applet window. They are just showing on std out. Shouldnt this be automatic? Again sorry for the naivete, but this is where it can be cured, grin.

    An applet isn't a non-writable container. You can write to it. But it's a GUI element, so you don't just write a stream of characters to it like standard output. As has already been explained, you can write to it using graphical commands like java.awt.Graphics.drawString.
    If you absolutely positively need to write a stream of characters to an applet, you can do it, essentially by creating a GUI widget that takes a stream of characters. But it's clumsy.
    So you have two choices:
    1) do it the right way. If you want text in your applet, use Label or Button widgets, or Graphics.drawString
    2) do it the clumsy way. You can create a TextArea and then create a java.io.Writer or a java.io.PrintStream that takes its input and sends it to the TextArea. If you use a PrintStream then you can use System.setOut, thus allowing you to redirect the output from System.out.println commands to the applet, not the console. Of course, by doing so, you're making the console unavailable for regular output which isn't a great idea, but that's the price you pay for being afraid to learn new things.

  • Applet + remote database + newbie

    Hi,
    Tired of microsoft randomly dumping the market making me rewrite applications each time they publish updated os,language etc...i finally (and really happily) surrender to java....
    Here is my point : i'd like to create applet-based application that will retrieve-update from/to remote server, (access database for instance)...am i pointing the worng direction or does it seem a good choice.
    Is it necessary to use servlets ? (all i've seen about applet-servlets seems a bit confusing even though it seems the right way to build solid rock applications, actually, i could begin with applets and remote database and later go to an applet-servlet application)
    Any good suggestion is welcome, but, please ,don't tell me about .net

    You can make a database connection via an Applet or an Servlet. You can make a database connection via Applet - Servlet - Database also.
    Making db connecion using applets or servlets is easy task.
    Visit the site's applet section to have an example. Since you are a beginner, it might look like a nightmare ;-)
    Hope it helps
    Uma

  • Newbie need help wtih Java Applet noinit error

    Hi, i am having problem with a making this java applet application run, i am new to java but i am sure that my coding is right, because this what i typed from my java class book. Don't know why when i try to run it is say at the bottom of the windows explorer, "applet class name "noinit"". The code is listed below maybe someone could help me figure this out. I used NetBean to compile it, also I have the latest version of java but could not find a applet that come with the newest version of java so I'm using the j2sdk1.4.2_11 applet, and have added it to my system environment path. Maybe that could be the problem if so where do i get the newest version of the applet, because without doing what i did i could run applets in the first place. My other sample applet sample (demo's) that come with Java runs fine without any problem. Only when i run mine i get the message, "applet class name noinit".

    Hi,
    Your applet code in the html should be
    <applet code="appletjavafig3_6.WelcomeApplet" width="300" height="45">
    alt="Your browser understands the <;APPLET> tag but isn't running the applet, for some reason."
         Your browser is completely ignoring the <APPLET> tag!
    </applet>As the class is inside a package named appletjavafig3_6, put the class file inside a folder named appletjavafig3_6. Put the html file outside this folder and test it.
