Newbie DBA, needs assistance

Question

I am trying to log on to sqlplus of ebusiness through putty and i am not getting an headway, basically i surely don't know my way rounfd the files system yet. But this is what i have done
[olu@nith ~]$ cd /
[olu@nith /]$ ls
BACS dev foglight initrd misc oraapp root stage var
bin etc home lib mnt oradata RPMS tmp
boot f.big_chunk images lost+found opt proc sbin usr
[olu@nith /]$ cd oraapp
[olu@nith /oraapp]$ ls
BACKUPS DEV nohup.out Patches PROD TEST
[olu@nith /oraapp]$ cd DEV
[olu@nith DEV]$ ls
devappl devcomn devora nohup.out patches
[olu@nith DEV]$ cd devappl
[olu@nith devappl]$ ls
but when i run the variable, i am denied permission, i want if i am doing the right thing, if no what do I need to do please, and at what stage do i change to $APPL_TOP
[olu@nith devappl]$ . APPSDEV_nith.env
/bin/.: Permission denied.

You are using putty so you will go locally inside the server..it is different.
How did you originally log in ?
Did you go root/<rootpassword>.?
If yes, go to the devappl directory and do $ls -l AS I TOLD YOU ABOVE
so you will know the owner of the files then
$su - <name of oracle files owner>
*it will be shown as the first column after the permissions.
Post the result please.
