Newbie help with Objects

Hi there,
I've been trying to write a program which invokes a few different methods. I was wondering if there is a way of transferring data.. say an integer... from one method to another?
Thanks!

of course there is. that's basically what writing code is all about. start at the beginning and read a basic tutorial
lots of luck!

  • HELP with object carousel

    Hi,
    I need some help with the use of the DSM-CC object carousel.
    In my Xlet, I need to read a file (previsioni.TXT), that is in the package testo; this is the structure of my folder:
    \\mio; the first package
    \\ MyXlet.java
    \\ testo; package with the text
    \\ previsioni.TXT
    1. so I create un object carousel and then access the file with the java.io.File :
    try {
                   System.out.println("Requesting file");
                        DSMCCObject carouselFile = new DSMCCObject("testo/previsioni.TXT");
              carouselFile.synchronousLoad();
              FileInputStream inFile = new FileInputStream(carouselFile);
              //Construct a DataInputStream by using the
                   //FileInputStream in the constructor method.
              DataInputStream inData = new DataInputStream (inFile);
              //Invoke methods of DataInputStream to read data from the data source.
         String s = inData.readUTF();
         System.out.println(s);
              //Close the FilterInputStream.
         inData.close ();
                   catch (InvalidPathNameException e) {
                        System.out.println("Invalid path name!");
                   catch (IOException e){
                        System.out.println("Problem reading previsioni.txt ");
    but when I run this code Xletview write
    [XleTView]-INFO->loading Xlet... [mio.StatiXlet]
    [XleTView]-INFO->XLET started... [mio.StatiXlet]

    xjava.io.File -
    Problem reading previsioni.txt
    and so there is an IO execption. Can someone help me?
    2. then, when the file is in the string s, i would display this file; I try with the Htext:
    texts = new HText( s, 20, 20, 200, 300, new Font("Tiresias", Font.BOLD, 26), Color.black, Color.white, new HDefaultTextLayoutManager());
    but when I compile the code appear:
    StatiXlet.java:173: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : variable s
    location: class mio.StatiXlet
    texts = new HText( s, 20, 20, 200, 300, new Font("Tiresi
    as", Font.BOLD, 26), Color.black, Color.white, new HDefaultTextLayoutManager());
    ^
    1 error
    Do you know how can I display this file?
    Thank you very much

    Hi beker,
    thank you so much for your help, but I have another question.
    I use your code and when I compile is OK, but when I run it in XletView it doesn't find the file previsioni.TXT and write this:

    [XleTView]-INFO->XLET started... [mio.StatiXlet]

    Create a procedure to insert a record into the Bill_Items table. All the fields in the Bill_Items table will be specified as para with the exception of the Selling_Price, which will be the Current_Price, retrieved from the Menu_Items table. Do not allow the insert to finish unless there are enough of all ingredients on hand. If the insert is successfull, the quantity field in the Ingredient table will need to be updated accordingly.

  • Newbie: help with join in a select query

    Hi: I need some help with creating a select statement.
    I have two tables t1 (fields: id, time, cost, t2id) and t2 (fields: id, time, cost). t2id from t1 is the primary key in t2. I want a single select statement to list all time and cost from both t1 and t2. I think I need to use join but can't seem to figure it out even after going through some tutorials.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ray

    t1 has following records
    pkid, time, cost,product
    1,123456,34,801
    2,123457,20,802
    3,345678,40,801
    t2 has the following records
    id,productid,time,cost
    1,801,4356789,12
    2,801,4356790,1
    3,802,9845679,100
    4,801,9345614,12
    I want a query that will print following from t1 (time and cost for records that have product=801)
    123456,34
    345678,40
    followed by following from t2 (time and cost for records that have productid=801)
    4356789,12
    4356790,1
    9345614,12
    Is this possible?
    Thanks

  • Need help with Object States or Buttons?

    I currently work in InDesign to compile layouts and present design decks to clients. Our template includes an approval section (Not Approved, Revised, Approved) that we currently have as white/black bubbles that we change manually on each page. I've been trying to find a way to speed up this process. I know that in InDesign you can create buttons than you can then click on-off on your PDF - we used to do this but it is too time consuming (we have PDF's anywhere from 25-120 pages). I have been playing around with Object States, so we can quickly update the bubbles in InDesign itself as we work.
    Does anyone know of a way to change the state of multiple objects on multiple pages at the same time? (For example, if I want to change all pages to "Approved" at the same time - or if I only wanted to do some, but not all, of the pages.)
    Can anyone recommend any other InDesign tools that may be able to create a similar function for an "approval" stamp, but that still is done in InDesign (not in the PDF after exporting)?

    I was hoping that wouldn't be the only way. My have multiple master pages already, and not all pages will be "approved" at the same time. So we've run into issues with putting these on the masters as it gets easier to miss them.

  • Newbie - Help With templates

    I am fairly new to dreamweaver. Looking to put together a
    basic site for a holiday home for rent. Would like to include
    photos of the house and surrounding area, travel details, details

  • Newbie Help with videocameras and editing software

    I am a third grade teacher who can whip around in imovie pretty well, but I want to expand and post training videos to the web. I also want to vodcast. I need a relatively easy videocamera, and of course, reasonably priced. I don't understand all the mumbo jumbo about the dvd, tape, flash videocameras except to know that some are not compatible with osx.
    Also would I be better off with Final Cut Pro Express?
    Help to a newbie...

    susannamessier wrote:
    OK now I am looking and I want this camera to be compatible with imovie also. On the Apple support page along side the Canon's I am looking at I see:
    Video stabilization limitations more...
    Filming in Cinema or 24p mode more...
    What? Goodness could this be anymore complicated?
    It's very intimidating at first. The short answer is that all this is compatible with iMovie.
    The longer one is:
    The number refers to frames per second (frame rate, in the jargon). Cine cameras run at 24 frames per second, so 24 fps is considered to give a look to moving objects similar to what you'd see in a filmed movie (think wagon wheels appearing to go backwards in old westerns).
    p refers to progressive, and means that you're getting 24 complete frames each second - again like film (this idea of mimicking film is the holy grail to some video makers - I say video is video, and should be treated like video). The opposite of progressive is i, for interlaced. Interlacing is a technique used in television since the early days as a way of giving you a better looking TV picture; in interlacing, instead of looking at each frame as a whole, you split it into very narrow lines, then scan al the odd ones, followed by all the even ones. In the old days, the scanning had to be linked to the way in which the electricity supply worked, so scanning was based on a frequency of 60 cycles per second (in the USA).
    So in video, you will see camcorders offering a frame rate of 60i as standard - i.e. 60 interlaced frames in one second.. They usually also offer 30p (which combines the results of 2 60i scans to give you 30 complete frames. And then as you've seen, 24p so you can make it look like film.
    You can shoot good movies in any of those frame rates; which ones you choose are up to you, but they're all used by many people for many different purposes. Some people will tell you you must use frame rate x for subject y. Listen, but don't follow blindly - try it out and see what works for you.
    The issue you will sometimes here debated about iMovie is how to take video you have shot interlaced, and get iMovie to export it as progressive, but still in high quality. Don't worry about that right now.
    Just get a camcorder you like, and make some movies. First feel really proud of them, then learn some more, and feel embarrassed by them (this is what we all do!).
    Hope that helps.

  • Newbie Help: Java Object to create an image

    Hi there.
    I'm trying to create a Java class that I can call from Coldfusion that will build a GIF file based on parameters.
    The idea is, the Java object opens a "background" gif file and then writes some text onto it and saves the whole thing out as a GIF.
    Bearing in mind this class will be used directly by Coldfusion, and so isn't an applet or an application...can anyone tell me what is wrong with this code as I get a null pointer exception on the getGraphics() line:
    // Methods available to Coldfusion
    public String CreateOverlay( String imageFile, String outPath, String overlayText, int x, int y, String fontFace, int PointSize)
    try{
    Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
    Image im = tk.getImage(imageFile);
    Gif89Encoder enc = new Gif89Encoder();
    OutputStream out = new BufferedOutputStream(
    new FileOutputStream(outPath)
    Image newimg = createImage(100,50);
    ***** Graphics g = newimg.getGraphics();
    g.drawImage(im, 0, 0, 100, 50, this);
    g.drawLine(0,0,50,50);
    enc.addFrame( newimg );
    enc.encode(out);
    out.close();
    catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Error...");
    e.printStackTrace();
    return "Dont care at the moment";
    Any help to this troubled newbie would be appreciated.

    Hi Kurt,
    You must call "setVisible(true)" on your Frame before
    creating the image.But, the thing is, this object doesnt have (or need) a GUI. Its just an object that sits on the server and its methods are called to generate an image on disk. Basically what happens is Coldfusion receives information from a user and it loads the java object, calls a method which then generates a new GIF file that is made up of a simple button background and some text (entered by the user)....it then returns the name of this file to Coldfusion and Coldfusion stores it in a database for later retrieval.
    In simple terms:
    COLDFUSION===========
    1. Creates an instance of the JAVA Object
    2. Call the generateGif method passing an image filename and some text eg:
    newFile=c.GenerateGif( "simplebutton.gif", "Some text for button");
    JAVA OBJECT========= (GenerateGif method)
    1. Load the GIF simplebutton.gif
    2. Create a new blank image
    3. Draw the loaded GIF onto the blank one
    4. Write the Text ("some text for button") onto the image
    5. Take the image and encode it to GIF format
    6. Write this GIF to disk
    7. Return the filename of the new GIF image just created
    8. Finish
    As you can see, I dont want or need a GUI.....
    Is this possible ?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Tony Johnson

  • JSF Newbie: help with forms & drop-downs

    Hi,
    I've managed to get a few simple things working with JSF using Netbeans & Visual Web pack. This is pretty sexy stuff for a grizzled old perl programmer. However, there are still a few things I'm having trouble getting through my thick head -- maybe some kind soul could point me in the right direction.
    I would like to have a couple of cascading data-bound drop-downs: dd1 provides a selection list for dd2, and the combination of dd1 and dd2, when selected, provides enough data to populate a webuijsf:table.
    The desired behaviour is that a change in dd1 repopulates the selection list for dd2 and furthermore, repopulates the table based on the selected value in dd1 plus the first value in the selection list of dd2. A change of selection in dd2 repopulates the table accordingly.
    My prerender() for the page checks if dd1.getSelected == null, and if so, sets the cursor to the first row in the bound data provider. Furthermore, it primes the rowset for dd2 with some rows from dd2's data provider based on the values in the first row for dd1.
    The first time through, everything is peachy: dd1 has the appropriate selection list, as does dd2. my webuijsf:table also has the appropriate rows (selected in the prerender()).
    My problem seems to be that when a new value is selected in dd2, dd1.getSelected == null at the next prerender(). This, of course, re-primes dd2, wiping out its selection.
    So, obviously, I don't really understand what I'm doing well enough to see how to do this. The visual web pack tutorials, where I started, really don't provide adequate explanation of what's going on, and the chapter on JSF in the J2EE tutorial is still a little abstract for me.
    I would be forever indebted if somebody could please provide a pointer to a resource (preferably something a perl programmer can afford ;-) that could help me understand, in concrete terms, how a form, and the elements on the form (and their events), are processed.
    Also, and as an aside, am I alone in thinking the whole Java thing is tremendously complex? I'm not talking about the Java language, which I find pretty intuitive, but the zillions of J* stuff around it, which seems somewhat dense. I really do want to learn this stuff, but it's pretty bewildering!
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Mike

    Normally I would tell you to inject the PersonController bean into the PersonSelectionListener bean as a managed property. Then drill into the bean to get the data you need.
    However, in this case you are dealing with a value change listener. Value change events are fired at the end of the Process Validations phase, before the Update Model Values phase. So in this case, the PersonController bean will not contain the selected person from the request. This is not a problem however, since the new value is passed via the ValueChangeEvent object.

  • Help with object oriented concepts

    I am a senior highschool student and although I know Java syntax, I learned with Pascal and other procedural languages so I have a difficult time thinking in OOP concepts (which I will have to learn for college classes). So for practice I went to my college's website and found an assignment on the intro course to programming: [Here are the assignment instructions.|http://www.cs.gsu.edu/knguyen/teaching/2009/spring/csc2010/proj.pdf]
    My question is, how can I make my program illustrate more object oriented concepts?
    Links:
    ode-help.110mb.com/javaproject.java_

    Just a few comments (not necessarily about OO and in no particular order):
    It's probably not worth it to make constants for the letter A or the plus sign. Make constants for values people would not understand:
    // Ok
    public static final int ANSWER_TO_THE_UNIVERSE = 42;'
    // Probably overkill
    public static final int FORTY_TWO = 42;
    Good job on having DecimalFormat as a regular instance variable rather than static (since it is not thread-safe)
    Good job initializing your object in a consistent state (via the ctor). Now, make as many variables final as you can. Immutable objects are good:[www.javapractices.com/topic/TopicAction.do?Id=29]
    Not sure why you declared repeat() to return the boxed version of boolean, just use a primitive
    You have a run() method but are not implementing Runnable. Not that it is required, but usually when I see run(), I think of threading
    This is a matter of style, but you don't need to name the arguments in the ctor differently than the instance variables that get assigned. You can very easily say:
    // Note that it is final.  Make things immutable when you can.
    private final String bar;
    public Foo(final String bar) {
       // Note:  I don't need a different name here.  This is purely a matter of personal style.
       this.bar = bar;
    Consider a while loop in run() rather than a do-loop. What happens if you get no input the first time around?
    Java naming conventions dictate that classes start with a capital letter. Generally, an underscore is not used, camel-case is. So, your class should be JavaProject.
    Consider making an object for the arguments that are passed into input. Maybe call it GradeCategory, or whatever.
    That new object GradeCategory can have the output() method.
    For method names, also follow conventions using camel case. So get_double should be getDouble().
    Consider reworking such that you use an array or a collection of GradeCategory. You might want to then have an add method in your JavaProject. The add method should ensure the total weight of grades does not exceed 100%.
    You can rework the output method of JavaProject to iterate over your GradeCategory objects, calling their own output() methods. Perhaps it also first checks that the weight of all grades equals 100%.Just a few thoughts.

  • HELP - With Object Heap

    Hello,
    I was wondering if you could help me with my problem. I have recently designed a website that uses the JVM on the server side (http://amazingestate.com) on a shared linux machine. The site was working fine until the owners of the server installed a few new files and I now get errors when running the site.
    The java classes run fine from a command prompt but when are called by a cgi I get a could not reserve enough space for the object heap error. The java programs are small and dont require large memory requirements.
    I was thinking the error is within the shell script in terms of allocating space for the program. I am not sure how to allocate memory within the shell account at runtime within the cgi wrapper script. The script bellow used to work fine and also run fine when telneting into my account. The error only occurs when running inside a cgi request.
    I have also tried the Xmx and Xms commands without luck.
    I have also tried to test the ulimit which is also set on unlimited.
    The following script can be found at
    http://amazingestate.com/cgi-bin/publicView/RND10.cgi
    which allows the viewing of the error
    #!/bin/sh
    echo "content-type:text/html"
    echo
    ulimit
    echo "<HTML><BODY>"
    echo "</BODY></HTML>"
    /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0/bin/java -server -cp /home/amazing/ss/publicView RND10
    Anyones help would be greately appreciated. Thanks for your time.
    Dale Miller

    You're going to start a new JVM every time you get a page hit? Are you aware of how costly this is (slow and memory-intensive)? This is exactly the type of requirement that Java servlets and server pages (jsps) are designed to take care of. You should consider using these.
    Regarding your specific problem, the only thing I could recommend trying are the -Xmx/ms switches, which you seem to have tried.

  • Newbie - HELP WITH CODE PLEASE!

    Hi guys,
    I have recently started using flash as some of the guys i work with suggested that it would be useful...
    I am currently designing a basic site in AS3 and am stuck with a bit of coding. I keep getting the error message:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.
        at new_web_v1_fla::MainTimeline/frame141()
    and having searched the net i cant find a solution. Here's my code:
    stop();
    function gohome(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("home");
    back_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gohome);
    function goit(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("it");
    it_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    next_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    back_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    function goom(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("om");
    om_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    next_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    back_btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    function gogd(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("gd");
    gd_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    next_btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    back_btn4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    function gocu(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("cu");
    cu_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gocu);
    next_btn4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gocu);
    I hope someone can help me out!
    Thanks
    Jon

    Thanks again for the advice, following your instructions i did use the // infornt of various bits of script.
    My AS now looks like this and the buttons that have the as left in the script without // before them work fine, no errors:
    stop();
    function gohome(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("home");
    //back_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gohome);
    function goit(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("it");
    it_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    next_btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    //back_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goit);
    function goom(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("om");
    om_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    //next_btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    //back_btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, goom);
    function gogd(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("gd");
    gd_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    //next_btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    //back_btn4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gogd);
    function gocu(e:MouseEvent):void {
        gotoAndStop("cu");
    cu_btn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gocu);
    //next_btn4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, gocu);
    the question now is how do i get my other buttons back into the script and get the bloody thing to work?
    ARRRGGGHHH! i am beginning to wish that i had never started! lol
    Thanks

  • Newbie help with collection java.util.ArrayList

    Hi,
    the documentation for the class ArrayList is given as
    public class ArrayList<E>
    extends AbstractList<E>
    what is that <E> over there ? Similarly, what is the <T> in an iterator ? Exact problem along with code is at the end of the post.
    I am a C++ programmer and am very comfortable with the STL, but that approach i.e. ArrayList<Job> does not work over here :(
    PLease help.
    TIA,
    Madhu.
    Code Details:
    I have a class (Job) which I wish to add to the list using the add method. Obviously, it gives an error.
    Code goes as
    class MyQueue extends java.lang.Object
    private java.util.ArrayList jobsList=new java.util.ArrayList(100);
    public void addtoMyQueueatIndex(Job newJob,int Index)
    jobsList.add((java.lang.Object)newJob,Index);
    Error is :
    MyQueue.java:96: cannot find symbol
    symbol : method addtoMyQueueatIndex((java.lang.Object,int)
    location: class java.util.ArrayList
    jobsList.add((java.lang.Object)newJob,Index);

    Are you using J2SDK 1.5.0 beta 1 or J2SDK 1.4.2? Are you using the docs from 1.5 and the compiler from 1.4.2?
    private java.util.ArrayList jobsList=new java.util.ArrayList(100); //-- 1.4.2 code
    private java.util.List<Job> jobsList = new java.util.ArrayList<Job> (100); //-- 1.5.0 code (preferred style)
    private java.util.ArrayList<Job> jobsList = new java.util.ArrayList<Job> (100); //-- 1.5.0 codeAs a matter of style, use the interface and not the real class when declaring a variable like the jobsList above whenever possible or applicable.
    You do not need to cast the object newJob to Object. And you have inverted the positions of the parameters.
    void add(int index, E element)
    Inserts the specified element at the specified position in this list (optional operation).
    jobsList.add(Index, newJob);

  • Newbie Help with SWF

    Howdy,
    I am working on a website with just plain html/css at the
    moment. I was provided a SWF intro for the splash page from a
    developer who designed the page. I have implemented the object and
    embed code so the SWF loads. Problem is that I want to click the
    SWF and have it take me into the website. I tried using a href, but
    that doesn't work. Can someone please help me?
    thanks

    There is a possibility that when developers making flash ad
    ,implement the clickTag method.
    I am not sure it is done in your case.
    If it is done the link to the website can be done while
    embedding the flash movie in html
    like this embed src="name of
    your_swf?clickTag=link_of_thewebsite"
    Else you should make necessary changes in the source file.
    Thanks
