Newly created folders give "staff" read-only permission

When I create a new folder in my home directory it has the following permissions:
Me: Read & Write
staff: Read only
everyone: No Access
Other (non-admin) accounts seem to belong to staff and thus have read access to any non-standard folders in my main (admin) home directory.
1) How can I change the staff permissions on these folders (Finder gives me an error)? Is this only possible using sudo chmod?
2) How can I change the default permissions to stop giving default access to all users through the staff group?
Thx,
Chris

Other (non-admin) accounts seem to belong to staff and thus have read access

The easiest solution is just not to keep confidential folders that you create yourself at the top level of Home. You could instead create a single enclosing folder to hold that all that extra material, call it, say, "My Other Stuff", and put it in your Documents folder where it would be protected from all other users. You could then create descriptive subfolders within in it, which would also be protected.
If you still instead want to alter the permissions of folders that you create yourself and you don't want to use Terminal, take a look at [BatChmod|http://www.macchampion.com/arbysoft/BatchMod/Welcome.html].

  • Cannot save in newly created folders

When I connect to the SMB server thing, for some reason, I cannot save to newly created folders that my co-workers make. With I right click on the folder that my co-worker created, it says "You have custom access". And I cannot save my Indesign files in that folder. But when I create a folder, everyone is able to save in that folder. When others create a folder, they are able to save in it as well, except for me. This has never been an issue before until recently.
Do I have permission issues? I ran Disk Utility to fix my permissions but no success. Help please. I just want to save my Indesign files to the server for everyone to access.

    Good afternoon :)
I have an MDS issue that is making me lose my mind.

Every time an Entity has any kind of read only permission assigned to it or its fields, Excel Addin show an error when we try to load it. When Entity has more rows than the maximum rows in the Settings pane, it will show you an option to filter data. When

  • Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive.

Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive. Is there a fix? It appears to work fine in the internal drive.

So your hard drive is setup for a PC using NTFS and you have the NTFS-3G driver installed (I wonder which version of the driver). I know many users have reported problems with file transfer speeds being slower on a Mac, but this is understandable due to the 3rd party driver you have to use to access the drive.
There are other higher performance drivers available for a price, like Tuxera but their site shows they haven't updated their drivers since late in 2010. They do say that they are 64 bit drivers but they want about $37 for it. They maintain a support site that has quite a bit on info about NTFS-3G issues.
I assume you've got a freeware or open-source version of the driver from Seagate. It's probably OK for occasional use to access the NTFS drive, but not the way you want to use a drive all the time on MacOS.
Fat32 is compatible with both OS's, but there are some restrictions like not being able to use video files larger than 4GB (actually 1byte smaller than 4GB) and the 2TB partition size limit. Both HFS+ and NTFS have advantages due to the way the OS's can optimize transfer speeds and reliability, but a drive that's plugged into many machines is always going to have compromises until we get native support for NTFS (possible in the future because it's already been tested), or the Windows side supports HFS+ (probably not going to happen). There are programs/drivers on both sides that can accomplish this compatibility, but not native solutions at this time.
Using 3rd party drivers could mean problems with some drives that don't work well or completely break with a system update in the future. Apple doesn't seem to try to break compatibility features, but they do control the transfer protocols and optimize the OS for reliability. Flash drives are mostly formatted with Fat32 and they seem to work well for data transfer with just about any OS.
For me, I've chosen to use a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+  in an Xraid configuration for local storage and Time Machine support, and Dropbox for some files that I can easily transfer to Mac, PC, or Linux by just using a web browser, and I quit installing proprietary drivers to any computer, Mac or PC. I've also got a couple of the USB Fat32 laptop drives (250 to 320 GB) laying around for large file transfers if needed.
Sorry, I got a long way from your original Folder Creation Date issue.

  • Bug? Folders created by transmission is read-only to Windows file sharing

It's a nice thing that transmission is supported in the LenovoEMC version of firmware. The thing is, folders created by this transmission are read-only, which means file can't be added, deleted nor modified from Windows file sharing (They are still be deleted with transmission though, but that's irrelavant).
From my experience, this issue is caused by the value of unmask not properly set up in the settings.json file. This file can be modified when transmission is not running, but I didn't find a way to stop transmission from running / restart itself even after being killed from SSH.
    Please help.

You have to have root access (which will void your warranty) to modify settings.json, that's why I wish Lenovo can come up with an official solution.
If you don't mind viod the warranty, then after you stop transmission, you can log in as root via putty, then use nano to modify settings.json as mentioned below:

  • Folders on NAS read-only. Can't change

I have a buffalo linkstation pro duo NAS. It is formatted in XFS.
It seems that randomly some folders have been changed to read-only, when they were previously read-write. I have one folder that is stuck in a read-only state. The folder contains some files from my XP machine. I wrote these files from the mac to the nas.
I am trying to delete the folder and cannot. I shutdown the mac, and accessed the NAS though my Windows laptop, and it wont let me take ownership. Any ideas on how to fix?

I had the same issue and figured out a solution.
    1. Create a folder in your user profile on the mac to mount a network share to. (Example: /chris/mount)
    2. Mount the network share to that folder you just created using this command in Terminal: mount -t smbfs//guest@<BUFFALONAS>/<SHAREDFOLDER> mount (replace <BUFFALONAS> with the IP address or hostname of your buffalo and replace <SHAREDFOLDER> with the smb share on the buffalo)
    3. In Terminal, change into the now locally mounted network share. (Example: cd /chris/mount)
    4. Run the following command in Terminal: chmod -R 777 ./
**Note: You will get an access denied error on any file that was created by a PC but all the files with "broken" permissions created by a Mac will be fixed.**
Hope this helps someone out there. I searched for a solution for months before figuring this out.

  • User with Read-Only permission can write

    Hi,
I have two Macs on a local network. I am sharing a folder on Mac-A and would like users to have read-only access to it. It is important that users cannot modify the data in this folder.
    On Mac-A:
Selecting System Preferences->Sharing->File Sharing, I added the folder to "Shared Folders". Next, I added the user account "bob" and assigned Read-Only access. User bob is not an admin and shows up as a "Sharing Only" account under Accounts.
    On Mac-B:
I connect to Mac-A as user bob and I can see the shared folder. I then am able to create and delete files in the "Read-Only" share. I've verified using File->Get Info that user bob does indeed have only read access.
What am I doing wrong and what can I do to enforce read-only access?
    Thanks!

Maybe your Mac-B user account has the same (short) user name
as your Mac-A user account. Matching user names or short user names
could make the Mac-B account able to Read & Write to your shared folder.
Because I think you can log in with short user names to a server
as well. I guess passwords should be matching as well,
and perhaps the user ID's (System Preferences -> Accounts
    -> right-click on user) also?
    Cheers,
    Vincent Verheyen.

    Dear Hussein,
I followed anil passi forum for creating apps read only schema , but only issue is we have multiorg enabled .
what is the modification dowe need in this step.
    Step 4
Write a after logon trigger on apps_query schema. The main purpose of this trigger is to alter the session to apps schema, such that the CurrentSchema will be set to apps for the session(whilst retaining apps_query restrictions). In doing so your logon will retain the permissions of apps_query schema(read_only). Howerver it will be able to reference the apps objects with exactly the same name as does a direct connection to apps schema.

You can read the source of any PL/SQL code in dba_sourceBut that requires a priv such as select any dictionary to be granted. Why would you want to give a schema access to reading any and all source code in the database?
This is why I think it is important that the OP provides the reasons behind the question of granting read-only source code access.
Security is a critical component of software engineering. The basic security principle is to grant the absolute minimum privileges required to s/w and users to get the job done. Granting access to a schema read access to a dictionary view like DBA_SOURCE violates it.
If userB wants to see userA's source code - then why not have userA simply mail it to userB, or check the code into a common source code repository?

while playing around with read-only beans i found that calling create()

ist there any danger in using this (maybe just an internal feature which

You should definitely check out 7.0 and its support for optimistic caching. It

No, it'll work fine. Until 7.0, read-only beans always ran in an
unspecified transaction. In 7.0, this has been relaxed to allow you to use
all the tx attributes with read-only beans.sounds great; seems that we should give 7.0 beta a try.
what comes to my mind is: if read-only beans would also write changes to
their CMP fields to the database (and send invalidation message) we
would have some kind of write-through-caching bean, wouldnt we ?
this is actually what I'm searching for, since we have to port an
application to weblogic with was designed using one bean per business
object - mapping this to the two-bean read-mostly pattern without
changing the present logic seems impossible without many changes and
loosing the ability to run on other application servers too.
so why not a 'read-mostly-bean' instead of manually implementing it ?

  • MS Windows "Custom Folders" appears as Read Only in Mac

    Hi,
I'm new to Mac, and started copying my old PC data to an external drive, so I could access it in my MacBook, before reformating my PC.
I copied a lot of folders (around 100 Gb) and noted that some folders are "read only" in that external drive. I remembered my unix time checking for chmod/chwon attributes, but I didn't see anything different from read/write folders. I could note just one thing. This "read only folders" are folder that, in my PC, had "Custom Icons", or "Custom images" attached to it.
I tried a lot of chmod/chwon combinations, but Terminal always said I have no right (or something like that, I don't remember now), so I gave up and copied from "Shared Folders", FTP or "one by one", and now it appears to be Ok.
Does anyone already saw this issue? If yes, is there a way to "force" that folder to be read/write? I tried using Finder to Find folder/files that were readonly (so I could identify each one), but I din't find the option. Anyone knows how?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The external drive is already formated in FAT32. Only my old PC is formated with NTFS, and the problem itself is while accessing theses files/folder in the external drive, not the PC (I'm not accessing the PC directly).
FAT32 file system can't handle unix permissions and any file on such a drive will be listed as having full read+write access for everyone. However, if a file is read only in windows, it will be locked in OS X and there is absolutely no way to unlock it from OS X side short of reformatting the drive. You need to log into windows and unlock or delte the file from there.

  • Read Only Permission on project site (PS 2013)

In Project Server 2010, if someone could see all projects, and had the “View Project Site” permission (basically the Executives group), you would end up with only Read rights on a project site.  You could view stuff, but not edit anything.
In Project Server 2013 we are having an issue with giving read only access to project sites. After comparing our customized groups/categories with the ‘out of the box’ Portfolio Viewers security permissions we have actually given our groups less permissions.
We want these users to be able to see all projects, but only have read only permissions on the project sites.  That is not happening.  The executives end up with contribute permissions similar to what a team member with assignments on a project
    would get.
