  • Workflow and General Use Questions

    Hello,
    I'll apologize right off the bat for these novice question because I'm sure the information is probably somewhere in the forum, I just haven't been able to find it. I just purchased Aperture after completing the demo as my library is getting too large to manage using standard file folders. I'm now trying to figure out the best practices for workflow and general use before I invest some serious time into importing and keywording all my pictures.
    1) Store files in the there current location, or in the Aperture Library? It seems to me that once they are moved to the Aperture library, you can only access them from within Aperture. I'm thinking I would be better off leaving them in their current location. For one, if I want to quickly grab a picture as an attachment to an email or something it seems easier to grab it from the standard folders. Second (and more important) I do not have room to keep all my pictures on my Macbook, thus most of them are stored on the Time Capsule.
    So... Keeping photos in their current location appears to be the best choice for me even though it adds an additional step every time I bring in new photos from my camera. Does this sound right?
    2) Is there a way to mark the photos that I have uploaded to my website (Smugmug)? Ideally, I would like to badge photos that have already been uploaded so I can quickly recognize them and ensure I'm not duplicating. I've considered using the rating, or keywords to indicate that a photo has been uploaded but both methods have disadvantages.
    3) Any suggestions for general workflow and organization resources (tutorials, books, websites, etc.)? I've looked at the videos on Apple's site but they obviously didn't get that detailed.

    I recommend to Manage by Reference with Master image files stored on external hard drives (note that Aperture defaults to a Managed-Library configuration rather than a Referenced-Masters Library). Especially important for iMacs and laptops with a single internal drive. The workflow as described below in an earlier post of mine uses a Referenced-Masters Library.
    I feel pretty strongly that card-to-Aperture or camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable.
    • Finder-copy images from memory card to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject memory card.
    • Burn backup hard drive or DVD copies of the original images (optional strongly recommended recommended backup step).
    • Eject backup hard drive(s) or DVDs.
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location." This is called "referenced images." During import is the best time to also add keywords, but that is another discussion.
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing in Aperture).
    • Reformat memory card in camera, and archive originals off site on hard drives and/or on DVDs.
    Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media/backups.
    Also note with a Referenced-Masters Library that use of the "Vault" backup routine backs up the Library only, not the Masters. Masters should be separately backed up, IMO a good thing from a workflow and data security standpoint.
    Max out RAM in your MB and keep the internal drive less than 70% full.

  • Weblogic user not authorized to use announcements

    I have recently installed Webcenter on Windows and am working with Spaces at this point. For some reason I cannot use announcements and discussions. My Spaces home page has the following under the announcement banner:
    User is not authorized.
    Also when I navigate to administration > configuration > services > discussions I get the following error:
    failure to authenticate the user weblogic, due to: Unexpected error occurred, due to : oracle.j2ee.ws.client.jaxws.JRFSOAPFaultException: Client received SOAP Fault from server : SOAP must understand error. Server could not understand one or more SOAP headers : {http://docs.oasis-open.org/wss/2004/01/oasis-200401-wss-wssecurity-secext-1.0.xsd}Security
    Everything else seems to be working ok, such as content server, documents etc. I have followed the admin guide regarding the jive set up file and can also connect and see the embedded LDAP server ok using an LDAP browser and connect to the discussions server directly. I have also created a connection to the discussion server which tests ok using the em farm, so everything suggests it should be working ok. To confirm I am using the embedded LDAP server on the WLS admin server, delivered as part of the Webcenter download and I have configured 2 machines on one box with the Admin Server, WC_Spaces and WC_Collaboration all being on the same machine (WC_Host).Can someone please suggest what else I may need to do?

    This seems like a config issue. Try the following to resolve the issue. It is from KM Article https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocContentDisplay?id=1541024.1
    Ensure that the WC_Spaces and WC_Collaboration managed servers are running.
    Run the following WLST command to attach an OWSM policy on the Spaces Web service endpoint:attachWebServicePolicy(application='webcenter', moduleName='webcenter', moduleType='web', serviceName='SpacesWebService',subjectName='SpacesWebServiceSoapHttpPort', policyURI='oracle/wss11_saml_token_with_message_protection_service_policy')

  • Which is the best MacBook for general use

    Hi, I am already use to using Apple as I have other products from them, including an IMac. However I am not sure which MacBook to get, whether the Pro or Air. I will be using it for general use at home and about, but also for school work. Which one is better (including their specific advantages I.e graphics) and which one would benefit me most according to my needs?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    The Air is lighter, but the Pro has the better specs. It will depend an little on if you want more portability or more power.
    By definition the MacBook Air  has lower general specs than the Pro.  Graphics will not matter much with light school work and general usage.  But as a rule of thumb, the Pro gets the better cards.
    You may be o.k with an air, but if you can afford the Pro, go with the Pro.

    Hello, I have a question regarding the Adobe Flash Player 11 license. In section 3.1 General use, in the product license, it states the following: "You may install and Use one copy of the Software on your Compatible Computer." How does this, if at all, apply to a dual boot computer. I run a Windows 7/ Ubuntu 12.04 computer and have Adobe Flash Player installed on Windows 7. Would it be contrary to the license terms if I also install Adobe Flash in Ubuntu?

    Generally with Adobe licensing, a separate boot instance or virtual machine is counted as a "computer."  Since you have two of those, but would run one copy on each, you you should be okay with that.

    Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
    What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

    Yes, the ATV2 only streams. It has an 8gb cache that stores the film as you watch it but you cannot use it as a hard-drive.
    I believe you can rent HD movies on the computer, albeit a more limited selection. Even so you won't have any format issues.

    Usually (that's the way I've always done it), we create a certificate request on the Exchange server, submit the request to the certificate authority (preferably a 3rd party public CA) and then import and enable the certificate for the appropriate Exchange
    functions: IIS, SMTP, IMAP. POP, for example.
    What if the company already has a wildcard certificate obtained for others uses or general use (that's how it was described to me).
    It was suggested that we might just use that certificate...
    I think it would be best to "go by the book" and proceed as mentioned above (creation of cert request on the Exchange server, submission to CA, and so forth). After all, you can obtain a certificate appropriate for use with Exchange for just over
    $50.
    But is the other option even possible?
    I know you can export an Exchange certificate obtained by what I believe to be the preferred way and import it on another Exchange server or on a ISA/TMG machine.
    But could you export a certificate from an Apache web server or a firewall device or... just something else, and use it for Exchange?

    But from what I know about Active Directory Certificate Services, there are all kinds of templates for various uses (disk encryption, email, code signing, etc.), presumably not interchangeable.

    So you want to export the existing wildcard certificate from a non-Windows system and import it to the Exchange server, correct?
    The article shows that openssl will create a PFX (PKCS#12) file - so this should work.
    I would not worry about templates. If the existing certificate is a SSL certificate (Extended Key Usage = Server Authentication) it should be OK.
    From "PKI Best Practices" perspective / "what a certificate actually is intended to be" it would be better to have a dedicated certificate including all the Subject Alternative Names needed by Exchange - but I know there are limitations to a certain number
    of names by public CAs. But theoretically if you ever wanted to revoke this wildcard certificate you would get into troubles as the same certificate is on very different systems.

I have now bought a second iPod Classic to store and play classical music as I don't want to shuffle rock with classical. What will happen when I attach the new iPod to my pc? Will it register as a new device with an iTunes file of its own, or will it duplicate what I already have on the original iPod?

    You can attach the second iPod and configure it to sync whatever content you like without affecting the first iPod.  I would take a look at this article for different ways to manage multiple iPods on one computer.

    i'm in the market for a new printer. I need a Laser printer which uses PCL for general work tasks, and for outside of work, something that can produce quality photo prints.

    The laser technology is such that it does not produce photo quality prints.
    Laser printers are producing the illusion of color by using only Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.
    If you want photos and not just "pictures" you need to look at ink jet or dye-sub printers.

    Hi everybody. So i am another guy who's getting the iphone 5 at a discount price.. .
    I know they are gonna take my unlimmited data away, and i'll be force to choose the 2GB/$30 a moth, so i was curious too know how much data do i use per month, if 2GB was enough for me. It seems like it, i use 500 MB average a month. But having LTE means more speed, more data, so hopefully 2GB will cover my needs. How about you guys? how much data do you use a month?

    You settings and such are in a separate place and not in the Firefox program folder as has been the case since the browser was known as Phoenix 0.1
    Your settings like Bookmarks, history and such are in a Profile. If you uninstall Firefox and then install same or another version you will find that your settings are still there since it will use the last Profile used unless selected otherwise upon Firefox start.
