Nexus 5548 and vfc Interfaces - WHY?

What is a vfc and why do we need to configure it? I find this extremely tedious.
I  have a Dell blade CNA connected to a Dell M8024-k FCoE transit module,  which is then connected to a Cisco Nexus 5K. The Cisco 5K's FC port is  in NPIV mode and is connected to a Brocade 300 switch. An FC target is  connected to the B300.
So, in configuring this set up, I see that, in the Cisco 5K, one has to map the CNA's Ethernet MAC-address to a vfc!
Why  do I have to do this mapping? You dont have to do this with Brocade.  For example, in another lab setup, I have a Dell M8428-k FCF (FCoE)  switch, which is a Brocade ODM, and there is no such mapping necessary.  You bring up a CNA at will, the CNA executees a FIP FLOGI, gets an FPMA  from the FC fabric switch, and a construct is seamlessly built  between that CNA (or perhaps more correctly stated, the N-Port component  of that CNA) and a LUN. NO MANUAL MAPPING is necessary.
Can  someone explain this Cisco vfc construct and why one has to engage in  this laborious task of mapping every CNA to a vfc? Just trying to  understand....perhaps I am missing something.
Thank you

Hello,
Virtual Fiber Channel ( vfc ) interfaces are used to apply FC features in FCoE link.

  • Nexus 5548 and Define static route to forward traffic to Catalyst 4500

    Dear Experts,
Need your technical assistance for the Static routing in between Nexus 5548 and Catalyst 4500.
Further I connected both Nexus 5548 with Catalyst 4500 as individual trunk ports because there is HSRP on Catalyst 4500. So I just took 1 port from each nexus 5548, make it trunk with the Core Switch (Also make trunk from each Switch each port). Change the speed on Nexus to 1000 because other side on Catalyst 4500 line card is 1G RJ45.
*Here is the Config on Nexus 5548 to make port a Trunk:*
    N5548-A/ N5548-B
    Interface Ethernet1/3
    Switchport mode trunk
    Speed 1000
Added the static route on both nexus for Core HSRP IP: *ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.150.39 (Virtual HSRP IP )*
But I could not able to ping from N5548 Console to core Switch IP of HSRP? Is there any further configuration to enable routing or ping?
    Pleas suggest

    Hello,
Please see attached config for both Nexus 5548. I dont have Catalyst 4500 but below is simple config what I applied:
    Both Catalyst 4500
    interface gig 3/48
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk encap dot1q
On Nexus 5548 Port 1/3 is trunk
    Thanks,

  • Nexus 5548 mgmt 0 interface

I'm new to the Nexus line and I was just wondering do I need to be cautious about connecting the mgmt 0 interface to a production network?  As far as spanning-tree or changing the priority of the root bridge?  I know bringing on a new switch you always want to be cautious of the configuration, along with what the switch will be used for.
I don't think it would cause a problem, especially if the port is configured for its own VLAN, but I just wanted to be sure.
    Cheers,

No, you don't need to worry about spanning-tree on the mgmt0 port.  It is just like a host port and it is in its own vrf.

It returns 3 vlans. But i can't find what this means.
The vlan is working, and traffic is flowing though it.

    Hi,
Is VPC configured correctly?  Has the port-channel been configured on both 5ks?
What is the output of "sh vpc and sh vpc incons?
Can you post the relevant configs from both 5ks?

  • Configuring FET-10G-SR for NEXUS 5548/2248

    Hey everyone-
I am a little newer with configuring switches and routers, and I have been asked to troubleshoot a FET-10G-SR in our NEXUS 5548 and NEXUS 2248.  I am aware that the ports need to be configured to except FET parts, and I have tried using the "switchport mode fex-fabric" command to configure the ports, but the command will not work for some reason. Can anyone help me with configurations step by step to have these parts work properly? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
    Chris Hazell

It should normally work unless the port is not the proper type of has a configuraiton applied that's incompatible.
Can you provide the output for "show run int eth ___" and "show int eth___" (substituting your interface number for the "___") for the interface in question?
Also, if it's the first fex you are adding, you must have enabled "feature fex" globally.

  • Vlan on Nexus 5548

I have 2 Nexus 5548, and those are VPC members. If I create a new Vlan (vlan 90) on each switch, will there any impact on the Peer link? Like peer link goes down or link flap ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Manu

    Hi Manu,
Creating new Vlan on both switches wont get any impact.
But be careful if you Vlan allow list on VPC peer link or VPC member link were you need to flow this new created vlan.

  • FCoE with Cisco Nexus 5548 switches and VMware ESXi 4.1

Can someone share with me what needs to be setup on the Cisco Nexus side to work with VMware in the following scenario?
Two servers with two cards dual port FCoE cards with two ports connected to two Nexus 5548 switches that are clusterd together.  We want to team the ports together on the VMware side using IP Hash so what should be done on the cisco side for this to work?
    Thanks...

    Andres,
The Cisco Road Map for the 5010 and 5020 doesn't include extending the current total (12) FEX capabities.  The 5548 and 5596 will support more (16) per 55xxk, and with the 7K will support upto 32 FEX's.
Documentation has been spotty on this subject, because the term 5k indicates that all 5000 series switches will support extended FEX's which is not the case only the 55xx will support more than 12 FEX.  Maybe in the future the terminology for the 5k series should be term 5000 series and 5500 series Nexus, there are several differences and advancements between the two series.

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.0 and Nexus 5548, SSH credentials fail

    Hi,
I'm having problem getting the Prime Infrastructure 2.0 to login with SSH to a Nexus 5548 to do an inventory. I get "Wrong Telnet/SSH credentials". But when I use the same credentials from another SSH-client it works fine. I also tested to SSH from the console of the Prime-server and that also works fine.
    Any ideas???
    Regards,
    Stefan Lindkvist

I have PI 2.0 working against Nexus 5k's in two different installations. See below for an example (click to enlarge).
Have you put in an entry in both the login and enable fields (even though they are not separately required when logging in directly)?

  • Connecting NEXUS 5548 1gig interface to 100mbps

    Hi,
I have a 5548 that I need to connect to a firewall that supports 100 Mbps only.
Can I configure interface speed on Nexus 5548 interface (GLC-T) to 100 Mbps inorder to connect it to the firewall??
    Regards,
    Sabih

    Hi Sabih,
The interfaces on a Nexus 5548 can NOT be configured as 100 Mbps.
If you wish to connect to the firewall via a 100 Mbps connection, you will need to make use of a Fabric Extender (Nexus 2000) that supports 100 Mbps.

  • C220 M4 w/ VIC1225 and Nexus 5548

I have four UCS C220 M4 servers that each have a VIC 1225 and are connected up to a Nexus 5548.  I have set them to trunk ports and have set the appropriate VLANs in ESX and the portgroups.  I can ping the gateway and other hosts on the network, but for some reason I can't ping any of the other C220 M4 servers that have a VIC1225.  All of the C220's can ping other devices on the network, but not each other.  Is there some setting I need to modify on the VIC or switch?  Currently the VIC is running as Classical Ethernet mode.

There is no special configuration to make connectivity work in the rack servers, I assume these servers are in standalone mode and not integrated with UCSM.
What L3 device is doing your Inter-Vlan routing? Is it the N5K these servers are connected to or there is another device doing this job?   If it is the N5K, are all the servers in the same network segment? I mean, is there a single SVI or multiple?  can your Nexus 5K ping each of the servers?

  • FCoE using Brocade cards CNA1020 and Cisco Nexus 5548 switches

    All,
I have the following configuration and problem that I am not sure how to fix:
I  have three Dell R910 servers with 1TB of memory and each has two  brocade 1020 CNA cards dual port.  I am using distributed switches for  the VM network and a second distributed switch for VMotion.  I have two  of the 10G ports configured in each distributed switch using IP Hash.   The management network is configured using a standard switch with two 1G  ports.
The  Nexus configuration is we have two nexus 5548 switch connected together  with a trunk.  We have two VPC's configured to each ESX hosts  consisting of two 10gig ports in each VPC with one port going to each  switch.  The VPC is configured for static LAG.
What  I am seeing is that after a few hours the virtual machines will not be  accessible via network anymore.  So if you ping the VM it will not work  and if you get on the console of the VM then ping the gateway then  nothing as well but if you try to ping another virtual machine on the  same host on the same VLAN then it will work so traffic is going through  the ESX backplane.  If I reboot the ESX host then things will work  again for another few hours or so then the problem repeats.
The version of vSphere I am using is ESXi4.1
    Please assist I am stuck.
    Thanks...

usually this table would show those models those have been tested and verified
However I do not see  Brocade 5300 listed in the table . It could be, interoperability may have not been tested by both vendors perticularly to 5300 type Model.

  • Why hasn't Adobe navigation and user interface design improved as much as it could have over time?

I haven't tried CS6. I'm sure it's great based on what i've seen alone. But as a user of adobe products for a number of years, i have to noticed there are still a lot of stagnant, awkward, stiff, irriating, slowing down elements found in the navigation and user interface on cs3-cs5, that i'm sure could have been eliminated or improved on at least from 2005 or 2007 onwards. I find some of these things inexcusable and unprogressive from bad traits that defined 1980's and 1990's general computer navigation and so on.
CS5.5 has lessned this a bid bit and is more fluid in bits and pieces but for those using cs3-cs5 and in general, i find some things just horrid. As a graphic designer no one is supposed to admit the flaws or irrations of these programs. We must hail them as god, never critisize, and always adjust to new things which i think is a bit fascististic and silly
The way the tools, options are laid out can be improved to be quicker, and easier to find and use. Using your voice as a commanding system would be helpful as well.
A lot of cmds are too complex to remember, they can be simplier or resemble the name of the tool or option. Its makes a chore to follow this system and competition for the smart *** who memormized all the cmds.
The way in which you loose floating side boxes, and the amount of tools or names hidden in the bars sometimes seem random and its always a constant search to find them incase you forget where they are.
The inability to open cs4 or 5 files in cs3 is just beyond extremly annoying. Whey shouldn't you be able to open cs1 or 2 files or photoshop 9 files  as well? Every five years work expires as well?
The layering system gets tricky and seems that a lot of things don't work when you normally move things. Its about going back, remembering and clicking on this or that, looking it up to make everything work. Sometimes which leaves you in a rut and wastes a good amount of time. You will always find this even after you've been using it for years.
The use of the fill paint/airbrushing, clone tool, lasso tool, pen tool, history being two steps back can be vastly improved to be much better to use
Masking and tools that have more complex features should find a way be automatically done or sampled. They can also have less complex steps and tha ability to be  previewed,  automatic or simpler  ( in case you can't remember how to do something or aren't getting it)
A lot of the special effects, and blending modes are useless, outdated, super-ugly and don't resemble  true darkroom effects ( such as polarization, and bas-relief for example)  which they could much more vividly done. There also could be more options that are closer to repro cameras/CTP software for halftoning and more complex digital effects.
Having to press or get used to pressing muliple keys or clicks for the most basic things simultaneously can be reduced to be easier
Adjusting text, new documents, photos should have a smoother, quicker navigational experince where things a lot of room to be , clicked back, re-done, saved in the wrong place etc..
Indesign could use more shapes, include more features that illustrator has, and possibly even photoshop to save time.
There should be a way to remind you of features, complex things you've forgotten, other than history and daily usage/practice of the programs
The help should resemble more of "visual -learners" guide books with voice features.
    There are a lot more
    Regarding other things:
I think the price encorages more piracy and allows people to not have a concept of what is means to owning software.
The loss of a manual or lessening of them for certain programs is a loss because it's always useful to  physical info you can flip through while looking at your program.
I think adobe should make entirely better products for professionals or people in the industry rather than spoonfeeding the same software to all.
They should also make less expensive add-ons like before for graphic software.
What do you adobe could have improved over time and if so what do you think they could have improved on?

  • Link FC between Nexus 5548 UP and Brocade 300

    Hello,
I have got two Nexus 5548UP and fabric Brocade.
I would like to connect my Nexus at my fabric Brocade.
    See the pdf file.
    Best regards,

Its possible to have more links between npv and brocade but if you want to port channel them, please check first with brocade support if they allow F port channel trunking in their code. Not sure if FOS 6.2.2 supports it. From our side (cisco switch running npv) we should be able to do a port channel upto any NPIV switch provided the upstream switch supports it.
