NIC and TCP settings in 10.4.9

All,
I am having troubles with the Yukon Gigabit Adapter 88E8053 on my MBP 17, generation 1.
I want to change the settings for the NIC, like checksum oboard, but I can't find how to do it. I have googled this, but nothing comes up. I am thinking of something like ethtool, kstat, etc. Or even the config file for the NICs.
Can anyone help?
Cheers,
John

It's managed by sysctl:
<pre class=command>sysctl net.link.ether.inet.applehwcksumrx</pre>
(or _tx) will tell you what your current recieve (transmit) setting is.
Use sysctl -w to change the value:
<pre class=command>sudo sysctl -w net.link.ether.inet.applehwcksumrx=1</pre>

  • JIMM and the TCP settings

    Hello all,
    On different sites in different threads I read that many people have problems getting the JIMM messenger software running because of the network settings. I am one of them. The problem is, that there are some hints which I all tried, but there is no real solution. Perhaps someone here can help.
    The problem should be the same for any other software using direct internet connection.
    What I already managed: It runs using sockets connection via the APN "web.vodafone.de", which I entered in Options - TCP.
    Since I'm additionally charged for this APN I would like to have it work using the blackberry APN "blackberry.net". I entered it in the TCP settings.
    So here are my questions:
    1) Do I need login information for the APN "blackberry.net" (user / password)?
    2) Does this APN only support HTTP or also sockets? Both does not work on my BB. I get errors 118 or 125.
    3) I using HTTP, which are the correct settings for port, user agent and profile in the JIMM software? If you cannot enter the correct strings, please tell me where I can copy them. (Service books etc.?)
    4) Are there any additional settings I have to change?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Joerg.

    I doubt you can do something about this from within Java. The TCP/IP stack is not a part of Java. It is handled by the operating system. Sorry...

  • Configuring speed and duplex settings of monitoring NIC under IDS v4.1

    Good day,
    While I know that, unlike IPS v5.0 where you can configure interface-specific settings via IDM, you cannot adjust interface settings using IDM in v4.1.
    I was wondering if it was possible to set these things, however, via the service account?
    Can someone share their suggestions, supported or not, on how to do this? Is it just a simple Google for "NIC settings Red Hat Linux 9" or is it more involved?
    Thanks in advance to any who reply,
    Alex Arndt

    What about a situation where you will be connecting the monitoring port of a v4.1 sensor to a passive TAP that is inline on a link with hard-coded interfaces?
    It is my understanding that any device connected to a passive TAP, that is one that has two network ports and two monitoring ports (one for each TX pair), must be configured the same. So, if the two devices at either end of the tapped line are forced to specific speed and duplex settings, so should the NIC cards on the device(s) connected to the monitoring ports of the TAP.
    Given this, can you provide the best practice for a v4.1 sensor? Could you also provide specifics on how to force-set the speed and duplex on the monitoring NIC, not the command and control interface, in such a way that it will survive a reboot?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex Arndt

  • Very slow network performance with Intel NIC when TCP Large Send Offload is enabled

    I have a Windows 2008 server with two NIC's (Intel PRO/1000 PL and Intel PRO/1000 PM), and one virtual external switch connected to each NIC.
    With the 01/14/08 network driver, I get very low throughput on both NIC's (~10KB/sec when downloading from my server when it should be around 11MB/sec).
    I've found that disabling "TCP Large Send Offload (IPv4)" on the virtual switch and "Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)" on the physical adapters solves the problem.
    Is this a bug in the driver?
    Thank you,
    Ricardo Costa

    2 years later, I was able to get that machine to work with Hyper-V under Windows Server 2008 R2, but only after disabling everything that had anything to do with TCP or IP offloading.  I think that I had to turn off 4 settings on one controller,
    and 5 settings on the other controller.  Once that was done, everything worked flawlessly.  It is very apparent that the Virtual Controllers do not properly use many of the features of non-Intel devices (not all Intel devices work either), and
    that Hyper-V does not completely uninstall if you remove it.
    If you have any problems, start turning off the features that your adapter supports, until it starts working.  You'll need to weight the cost of replacing the controller with a fully supported controller, of which there is no list, or using your existing
    controller at a capacity lower than it physically supports.  This has been an elusive issue with Microsoft's Virtual Server projects since they were first in beta, so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
    P.S. For those who don't know, the settings are on the actual device and can be changed in the Device Manager.  If you are still having trouble after turning off all the settings, then you will need to replace the controller(s) with a different
    make/model.

  • How I can keep my MBP nice and speedy?

    I finally jumped out of my Windows and into a Mac. I have used a Macbook at work for 3 years with very little trouble. I am an educator who lost my job right after I invested in a Macbook Pro and it seems to FREEZE UP frequently. I have seen the "spinning rainbow wheel of death" more times than I can recall. I have had the machine exactly 1 month.
    Someone mentioned to me that it may be my Office 2008; the scripts don't seem to play nicely. I am at a loss. I invested in this because I wanted less drama than my "Dell from ****."
    Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can keep my MBP nice and speedy?
    Is there a limit to how many applications I should have on the dock?
    Should I keep everything off of the desktop?
    I am also a web developer and I have been using:
    adobe CS4 web suite.
    Captivate
    Second Life
    Firefox (With many plug-ins)
    MAMP Pro
    ITUNES
    Office 2008
    Imovie
    Frequently.
    I don't turn it off everyday.
    My system is as follows:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core i5
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
    Maybe I can get some pointers to minimize this drama, so before I start screaming at Apple, I thought that I would check with my peers in this wonderful online community.
    I am open to technical advice and personal philosophy.
    Thank you for your help in advance!

    Get Onyx. It has some automated scripts that keep your mac's performance really good.
    Personally, I'd try using Onyx, if that doesn't help, just put your Ma OSX Install DVD inside, boot from it and install the OS again. All files and settings will be left intact (don't forget to update your system after installing it).
    Make sure you have the latest Office version installed, as earlier versions are known to disable some system tasks, therefore making OSX unstable.

  • Solaris Kernel and TCP/IP Tuning Parameters (Continued)

    This page describes some configuration optimizations for Solaris hosts running ATG Page Serving instances (application servers) that will increase server efficiency.
    Note that these changes are specific to Solaris systems running ATG application servers (+page serving+ instances). Do not use these on a web server or database server. Those systems require entirely different settings.
    h3. Solaris 10 Kernel
    Adjust /etc/system (parameters below) and reboot the system.
    set rlim_fd_cur=4096
    set rlim_fd_max=4096
    set tcp:tcp_conn_hash_size=32768
    set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295

    {color:blue}set rlim_fd_max = 4096{color}
    {color:blue}set rlim_fd_cur = 4096{color}
    Raise the file-descriptor limits to a maximum of 4096. Note that this tuning option was not mentioned in the "Sun Performance And Tuning" book.

    h4. Increase the connection hash table size
    {color:blue}set tcp:tcp_conn_hash_size=8192{color}
    Increase the connection hash table size to make look-up's more efficient. The connection hash table size can be set only once, at boot time.

    h4. Increase maximum shared memory segment size
    {color:blue}set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295{color}
    Increase the maximum size of a system V shared memory segment that can be created from roughly 8MB to 4GB.
    This provides an adequate ceiling; it does not imply that shared memory segments of this size will be created.
    [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19683-01/816-7137/chapter2-74/index.html]
    h4. Increase memory allocated for dirty pages
    {color:blue}set autoup=900{color}
    Increase the amount of memory examined for dirty pages in each invocation and frequency of file system synchronizing operations.
    The value of autoup is also used to control whether a buffer is written out from the free list. Buffers marked with the B_DELWRI flag (which identifies file content pages that have changed) are written out whenever the buffer has been on the list for longer than autoup seconds. Increasing the value of autoup keeps the buffers in memory for a longer time.

    Again, note that after adjusting any of the preceding kernel parameters you will need to reboot the Solaris server.
    h3. TCP
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_time_wait_interval 60000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q 16384
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q0 16384
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_ip_abort_interval 60000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_keepalive_interval 7200000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_rexmit_interval_initial 4000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_rexmit_interval_max 10000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_rexmit_interval_min 3000
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_smallest_anon_port 32768
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_xmit_hiwat 131072
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_recv_hiwat 131072
    ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_naglim_def 1h4. Tuning the Time Wait Interval and TCP Connection Hash Table Size
    {color:blue}/usr/sbin/ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_time_wait_interval 60000{color}
    The tcp_time_wait_interval is how long a connection stays in the TIME_WAIT state after it has been closed (default value 240000 ms or 4 minutes). With the default setting, this socket will remain for 4 minutes after you have closed the FTP connection. This is normal operating behavior. It is done to ensure that any slow packets on the network will arrive before the socket is completely shutdown. As a result, a future program that uses the same socket number won't get confused upon receipt of packets that were intended for the previous program.
    On a busy Web server a large backlog of connections waiting to close could build up and the kernel can become inefficient in locating an available TCP data structure. Therefore it is recommended to change this value to 60000 ms or 1 minute.
    h4. Tuning the maximum number of requests per IP address per port
    {color:blue}ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q 16384{color}
    {color:blue}ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_conn_req_max_q0 16384{color}
    The {color:blue}tcp_conn_req_max_q{color} and {color:blue}tcp_conn_req_max_q0{color} parameters are associated with the maximum number of requests that can be accepted per IP address per port. tcp_conn_req_max_q is the maximum number of incoming connections that can be accepted on a port. tcp_conn_req_max_q0 is the maximum number of “half-open” TCP connections that can exist for a port. The parameters are separated in order to allow the administrator to have a mechanism to block SYN segment denial of service attacks on Solaris.
    The default values are be too low for a non-trivial web server, messaging server or directory server installation or any server that expects more than 128 concurrent accepts or 4096 concurrent half-opens. Since the ATG application servers are behind a DMZ firewall, we needn't starve these values to ensure against DOS attack.
    h4. Tuning the total retransmission timeout value
    {color:blue}ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_ip_abort_interval 60000{color}
    {color:blue}tcp_ip_abort_interval{color} specifies the default total retransmission timeout value for a TCP connection. For a given TCP connection, if TCP has been retransmitting for tcp_ip_abort_interval period of time and it has not received any acknowledgment from the other endpoint during this period, TCP closes this connection.
    h4. Tuning the Keep Alive interval value
    {color:blue}ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_keepalive_interval 7200000{color}
    {color:blue}tcp_keepalive_interval{color} sets a probe interval that is first sent out after a TCP connection is idle on a system-wide basis.
    If SO_KEEPALIVE is enabled for a socket, the first keep-alive probe is sent out after a TCP connection is idle for two hours, the default value of the {color:blue}tcp_keepalive_interval{color} parameter. If the peer does not respond to the probe after eight minutes, the TCP connection is aborted.
    The {color:blue}tcp_rexmit_interval_*{color} values set the initial, minimum, and maximum retransmission timeout (RTO) values for a TCP connections, in milliseconds.
    h4. Tuning the TCP Window Size
    {color:blue}/usr/sbin/ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_xmit_hiwat 65535{color}
    {color:blue}/usr/sbin/ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_recv_hiwat 65535{color}
    Setting these two parameters controls the transmit buffer and receive window. We are tuning the kernel to set each window to 65535 bytes. If you set it to 65536 bytes (64K bytes) or more with Solaris 2.6, you trigger the TCP window scale option (RFC1323).
    h4. Tuning TCP Slow Start
    {color:blue}/usr/sinb/ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_slow_start_initial 4{color}
    tcp_slow_start_initial is the number of packets initially sent until acknowledgment, the congestion window limit.
    h4. Tuning the default bytes to buffer
    {color:blue}ndd -set /dev/tcp tcp_naglim_def 1{color}
    {color:blue}tcp_naglim_def{color} is the default number of bytes to buffer. Each connection has its own copy of this value, which is set to the minimum of the MSS for the connection and the default value. When the application sets the TCP_NODELAY socket option, it changes the connection's copy of this value to 1. The idea behind this algorithm is to reduce the number of small packets transmitted across the wire by introducing a short (100ms) delay for packets smaller than some minimum.
    Changing the value of tcp_naglim_def to 1 will have the same effect (on connections established after the change) as if each application set the TCP_NODELAY option.
    {note}
    The current value of any of the TCP parameters can be displayed with the command ndd get. So to retrieve the current setting of the {color:blue}tcp_naglim_def parameter{color}, simply execute the command:\\
    {color:blue}ndd -get /dev/tcp tcp_naglim_def{color}
    {note}

    For example,
    Socket.setSoTimeout() sets SO_TIMEOUT option and I
    want to what TCP parameter this option corresponds in
    the underlying TCP connection.This doesn't correspond to anything in the connection, it is an attribute of the API.
    The same questions
    arises fro other options from SocketOptions class.setTcpNoDelay() controls the Nagle algorithm. set{Send,Receive}BufferSize() controls the local socket buffers.
    Most of this is quite adequately described in the javadoc actually.

    and i find many people have met the same thing. But they are spartan  series FPGA and i try to low the Resistances of Mode pins,M0 M1 and M2, but the problem does not been solved.
    I have read the status Registers and find there is an over-temperature state
    and in Impact i could not readback the registers. It is strange.
    I am anxious about this problem and have not solved it yet
    What reasons may it be?
    Hope for your answer, thank you

    That is not at all surprising.  I always assumed the problem is with reading the XADC (system monitor) block and not with the voltage or temperature.
    my Reference board is ML605
    That would have been nice to know at the beginning...
    It seems that you have selected the correct mode, assuming your jumpers are set as required in the ML605 Hardware User's Guide.  See table 1-27, table 1-33 and the note below it about switch S1.
    I'm not that familiar with the details of this reference design, but it may be that the slave SelectMap circuitry requires a reset or power cycle to actually configure the FPGA.  Have you tried power-cycling to see if the FPGA boots from the flash?
    I'd also suggest that you select the V6 in the JTAG chain view, then go to the debug menu of Impact and select Read Device Status (this is from memory, but it's something like that).  That will not only show the bits of the configuration status register, but also describe what each bit means.  Among other things you can check the state of the FPGA's configuration logic and the Mode pins.

    I am having an issue with agent communication where the agent installs on a server, but is then unable to communicate correctly with the primary servers. This error is typically reported through the Zenworks agent status in ZCC "Unable to connect to the agent service through the IP Address or DNS."
    It seems that when the agent installs it selects what it deems to be the primary NIC and then binds to this address. I have a large number of servers within my deployment domain and whilst in some instances it will be relatively straight forwadr to change the binding order in other instances this can be quite complex and will greatly increase the complexity and timeframe for our deployment project. Can anyone help with my questions below.
    1 Can anyone confirm that this is indeed the default behaviour ?
    2 Is there any way to specify the specific interface for the agent to bind to ?
    3 Does anyone have any practical examples of workarounds for this issue ?
    Many Thanks
    Gareth

    Find the Server in the ZCC, Select the Settings Tab and Modify the
    "Restricted IP Addresses" to tell devices to not use a specific address.

  • TCP settings?

    Where are the TCP settings on an 8330m? I've looked through everything under 'options'(and that includes all the subcategories) and can't find it.

    this settings are OK but (minimal), when you say "going forward" is this for performance or growth?
    tcp_conn_req_max_q 128
    tcp_conn_req_max_q0 1024

  • BEFW11S4 UDP AND TCP PORT opening

    How do i open UDP AND TCP ports specifically TCP ports: 80, 6667, 28910, 29900, 29920
    UDP ports: 4321, 27900 Its for a networkable game i need to open these ports to play it.

    Ok But when i try disabling the numbers in the forwarding field i run out of spaces in the field to be able to disable them Is there an advanced firewall settings that i dont know about? I put in all of the range forwarding and put the range forwarding start for example 80 originally (TCP ports: 80, 6667, 28910, 29900, 29920
    UDP ports: 4321, 27900) The ones i try to disable i run out of fields to disable them in the forwarding for example there are 10 slots for disabling and Im trying to disable them on two numbers 192.168.1.101. and 192.168.1.100 So i need to disable them for both ip numbers I got 10 fields to enter it into them and 10 x 2 is more than the numbers..... You get me?? and on top of that i dont know if what i did was enough Linksys doesnt want to help me without paying 30 dollars so im just thinking i should buy a new router....... i mean they charge 39 dollars for a new router and they want me to pay 39 dollars for tech support it just doesnt make any sense........

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Memory timings and power settings anyone?

    I'm not very good with computers, so I've just played around with the timings on my memory, but have not found one stable setting as of yet.
    The memory is brand new and I've tested it for errors on my brothers computer and there's nothing wrong there.
    Intensive harddrive usage, dvd playing and intense downloading while listening to music are sure ways to crash my system. "..........Not less or equal" is the most common error message, but there are
    many many more.
    Oh, maybe I should point out that overheating's not an issue, cause I've good fans and run my computer without sidepanels.
    I also like to say that I have the first generation of p4 with ht and 533fsb.
    I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention but here below I'll paste the system summary that Sandra gave me.
    Would be forever grateful if someone could help me out with the memory timings and power settings for my board. Setting it to "auto by spd" gives me a very unstable system, so no avail there.
    I'm running the mem at 2.70 and sometimes at 2.65, since these two settings seem to be the ones with least crashes.
    The Memory installed are 4*512mb ,kingston 512 kvr333x64c25 pc2700
    The PSU is a Tagan "TG480-u01" 480w
    Many many thanks in advance guys.

    No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

    How do I transfer my MacBook Air to my wife so she can sync her iTunes account and other settings with her iPad Mini?

    You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
    As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
    She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
    As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.
