Nikon NEF and working in IPhoto to Photoshop CS

I have a Nikon D70 (non "s") I can download my RAW (NEF) photos to IPhoto and see them in Iphoto as well as in the Nikon software but when I try to open them in Photoshop I get a notice that they are the "wrong type of file". Has anyone experienced this and how do I correct it? Thanks

I was in the process of setting up the Library Buddy (LB)for the first time, attempting to add my current iPhoto library to the LB. Once I did that I tried to open the original library and found I could no longer access it. A dialog box popped up telling me that I do not have permission to access these files and or they are now locked. I've always had access to the library. Anybody out there know how I can get to these files?

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want.

  • Why is there a missing font called "Ben Pioneer" when it is installed on my pc and works perfectly well with photoshop CS5?

Why is there a missing font called "Ben Pioneer" when it is installed on my pc and works perfectly well with photoshop CS5?

    M5Mike wrote:
Yes the font works fine with Photoshop and office been using it for years.
Illustrator is a lot more pickier about fonts than those two. And Freefonts are known to get into trouble with Illustrator.
From what I can see on Dafont the font isn't a bitmap font.
Do you use font management? Try installing the font without font management.

  • NIKON NEF and previw

    i have a Mac Pro and a Mac air, and a Nikon D3 and a nikon D700.
When i copy the NEF files generated by the 2 cameras on the Mac Pro i can see the icon preview ONLY for the D3 files but i can see both preview files with Mac Air.
    How is it possible?
Also not possible to see the icon preview on the G5 but it works on a G4.
    Strange, very strange.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    thanks
    PS
of course the folder where the NEF files are has been set up (options) in order to show the icon previews.

  • Nikon .NEF stopped working with Yosemite

I've noticed Nikon format .NEF files from my Nikon D3200 that previously worked in Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks comes up as a black thumbnail (or half the image and half black at the center of the image) and the image comes up the same way as well.
My CPU: 2009 iMac Corei7 2.8 ghz with 24 gigs of ram, internal 1 TB drive, external 5 TB array via FW800, 3 different 1.5 TB USB drives.  Running Yosemite 10.10.  The previous version Mavericks worked fine.
I take shots on a Nikon D3200 using the v1.03 firmware and write to multiple Class 10 SD cards. One is 64 gig, one is 32 gig and I have another 32 gig I've tested as well.
If I take a JPEG, the problem doesn't exist. If I load shots from my iPhone 6 plus the jpegs load fine.  I thought it might be the SD card so I've tried 3 with the same results.
If I load a SD card full of .NEFs it seems to cause iPhoto to slow nearly to a halt while attempting to read the images.
It eventually loads them but they're either all black or they are half black/half image.
If I look at the thumbnails they are either black or half the screen is the image and the other half is black.
If I look at the images itself they are either fully black or cause the user interface to almost hang while reading.
I literally went so far as to back up my entire 300 gig iPhoto library to a backup drive and start a completely new iPhoto library.
I deleted iPhoto off my computer altogether, redownloaded from the iTunes store and started completely from scratch.
    No joy, same problem.
240 JPEGs off my iPhone? No problem. Thumbnails and photos look great.
3 test .NEFs from a 64 gig SD card from my Nikon D3200: the images are black, thumbnails are black.
Here's the funny thing: I can take the same SD card and load it on my work Windows PC
(Windows 7 64-bit on a Corei7 2.7 ghz with 8 gigs of memory) and the pictures load, store and view fine there.
This is apparently then a MacOS problem.
But not everyone is having the issue: my friend with a Nikon D5300 his .NEFs are coming out fine but he's got a brand new Mac Pro so I'd expect that to work.
It was suggested to me to download the Digital Camera Compatibility Update.  However, I can't download a version of the Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update because the newest one I can download from apple.com is v5.07 and if I try to install that it claims the one I'm running now is NEWER than that one!
I've even tried to leave iPhoto out of the situation by just reading the .NEFs in the finder but it seems to be a system problem because the files have the same issue in preview loaded from the finder.
I even tried a copy of the Gimp for MacOS and had the same "black images" issue.

  • Importing Nikon NEF Raw files into iPhoto

Recently I purchased a Nikon D810 camera and have been trying out various settings to determine the quality of picture I can get. As a way to run through the test, I took pictures with different RAW (NEF) settings. I also took pictures in JPG format for comparison.
What I have found is that iPhoto (version 9.6) will import all of the JPG files but only the RAW files taken in the Large 14 bit or Large 12 bit format. It will not accept the RAW Small photos.
Has anyone run into this problem? And, if so, any ideas about how o address this?
I am using a Mac Pro for this work.
    Thanks.

That is what Apple's RAW support page says, so you can do nothing about it:
OS X Yosemite: Supported digital camera RAW formats - Apple Support
    See the footnote at

    Nikon D810†

  • I have recently purchased a Nikon D7100 and can no longer use Photoshop CS5 to process RAW files. What are my solutions ?

I am sure this has been asked before for similar new camera buyers, but as I have made a sizeable investment in purchasing PS 5  less than one year ago, I expect ADOBE to have an upgrade available for my new Nikon D7100 camera.
Other Software makers usually have upgrades available to download for new cameras not long after they are released.
I have seen on some photography forums where other users of my camera model have asked the same question as myself without receiving  any positive advice other than to up grade to PS 6. A few suggestions do not work or are possibly illegal.
Under consumer laws, in many countries, software makers are obliged to maintain support for a reasonable period of time after release.
Come on Adobe, please help the many thousands of PS 5 and Lightroom users to use the Adobe software that they have purchased in good faith and we will move to PS 6 or 7 or 8 when we are ready.
Can we please expect an answer to this problem any time soon ?

Why did you purchase an obsolete version? One year ago Photoshop CS6 had already been out a while.
    According to this list
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
support for that camera was added with Camera Raw 7.4, which means CS6 at least.

This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.
Adobe is not in the habit of adding support for new cameras to obsolete versions of Camera Raw.
But it offers the free DNG Converter.
Edit: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows
And camera makers are free to adopt DNG if they want to make their cameras’ output easily editable with non-proprietary software, but it seems many of them simply don’t want that.

  • Nikon NEF Files will not Open in Photoshop CS2

In OS Leopard w/Aperture 2, there was never a problem opening RAW .NEF Files.
Now with Snow Leopard and Aperture 3...I get a message that the format is unrecognizable.
My system and PS2 are fully updated to current versions.
Thank in advance for any help.

    Ernie,
You are correct in the RAW decoding engine used in Camera Raw (would be version 3.x in the CS2).
As you know, Adobe Camera Raw is included with each new release of Photoshop since CS came about. However, they generally only update the current version of ACR for new camera models.
The work-around (Adobe solution) for using older versions of ACR / PS is to convert the RAW files to DNG files using their free Adobe DNG converter, which allows compatibility for newer camera models (same solution offered to many with new unsupported cameras in Aperture).
Not sure whether this is the problem for the OP though, as the opening sentence indicates successful use with AP2 and 10.5?
Note - not sure what Adobe will do overall with Lightroom updates as they have been offering those at the same time as the ACR updates. LR3 and CS5 should clear some of this up.

  • Help! Does the Nikon Coolpix S5 work with iPhoto?

iPhoto can't find my Nikon Coolpix s3 camera. It will not mount on my desktop. What do I do? I have used this camera for a few years and now it will not work any more. Is it the new OSX 10.5.3?
    Thank you.

What is the "iPhoto transfer APP?". You use iTunes to sync your iPad and use PhotoStream to move photos

On both computers Photoshop CS6 installed, so this will do the trick?
    Photoworks.
Yes Certainly. PS has been reading Nikon NEF files for YEARS. The only problem you may run into is with the Newest Nikon cameras. That is if you have the newest Nikon. That is until Adobe updates Adobe Camera RAW to support the newer Nikon cameras.

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

  • Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.

In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it.

  • Photoshop CS4 and Nikon .NEF files

I just downloaded Photoshop CS4 for a trial basis. I use 2 nikon cameras and 1 Canon and shot is RAW format. The RAW file extensions are .NEF and .CS2. I had the understanding Photoshop had no problem reading these file formats (through ACR). However, I am not able to access photos under the .nef format. How do I access files under .nef?
    Thanks

It reads it fine and I believe CS 3 does as well.
Perhpas there is a trial of Light room which users the same engine as ACR but has more organizing features. And the spotting tool works better.
But I assure you that ACR reads nef what camera do you have? Is it a recent release?

  • IPhoto and Nikon NEF files in Yosemite

    Hello,
Since I installed Yosemite last weekend, I cannot upload photos from my Nikon D610 NEF (RAW) format. Every time I have tried to upload -either by connecting the camera with the cable or by inserting the memory card in the Macbook- iPhoto starts to idle when I click "import photos". Beach ball appears and after several minutes iPhoto crashes. I use a Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz, intel core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (late 2011). I even tried doing it one by one... same problem.
Is this a problem that Apple is going to solve: NEF or RAW compatibility with iPhoto and Nikon files? Does anyone now how long for this to get fixed by Apple? I have hundreds of photos in my memory card to upload and work with.
    Thank you.

Support for your camera was added in Camera Raw 5.4 which means support will be available in PSE7 and automatically in versions 8, 9 & 10.
