No audio (no sound) in Windows XP only

My MBP recently stopped playing any audio. I do have the infamous red light emitting from the headphones jack. This probelm ONLY exists on the Windows XP side, which I must run 90% of the time. Audio is perfectly functional on the OSX side. My control panel shows the audio device to be Realtek HD. I downloaded the driver and re-installed. The suggested plug/unplug solution in other posts has had no effect. I'm at a complete loss.
Any help would be appreciated.

I, too, am having the same problem. I've seen other complaints here on the board of having LOW sound in XP and other based Windows operating systems, but I have no sound whatsoever.
If either of you have figured this out (or if anyone else out there is reading this), please give me some pointers.

My mac desktop will not provide sound from internal speakers.  When I go to audio devices window it only shows airplay.  How can I get internal speakers back.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • HP Pavilion DV5000 : Conexant Audio HD sound not working after upgrade XP to Windows 7

On HP support site there are no drivers for Windows 7 for Conexant Audio HD soundcard in HP Pavilion DV5000.
Have tried installing Vista drivers in stead, does not work.
Have tried renaming unzipped Vista files to camcaud.sys & camchal.sys and copied them into Windows/System32/Drivers and reboot, does not work. This is the only solution I found after reading forums for several hours, but does not work.

  • No sound g60-235DX Windows XP only after standby

Thanks to CherylG and Provost, I was able to convert the above said computer from Vista to XP.  The thing runs great, except for one small annoyance... When I bring the computer back from standby, there is no sound.
The Conexant 221 driver is there, I can move the volume control in the sound applet, and nothing is muted.  But there is no sound at all (appevents, WMP, etc.).
If I cold boot, restart, or bring it back from hybernation, it works.  It only fails when coming back from standby.  The reason this is an issue is because I will be placing the closed computer behind my monitor and want to bring it back up with the mouse or a touch of the externam keyboard.  Stand by does that.  The only way out of hybernation is by pressing the power button.
Just for fun, I started Windows Media Player, then put the machine in standby mode.  When I brought it back up, the it would play for one second, then freeze for 6 seconds.  There was no sound, but I could see it start/stop because of the graphic visualization going on and off.  Also, the scroll bar continued to move as if the song was playing.
Again, a cold boot, a restart or return from hybernation and the sound is there.  Return from standby and there is no sound.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    -Lawrence

Yes, it is enabled. I found out it goes out when I install a M-Audio 2496 sound card. Any ideas on how to make it stay?

  • On my Apple TV I am receiving audio from sound effects only, eg clicking the remote. No audio is heard when I play movies theirfore can't be connection between tv and Apple TV?

No audio for videos or music, only audio is sound effects eg clicking remote noise works also when changing characters also audio works.

Check the sound settings... if set to Dolby Digital that could be the issue, especially if the content does not have dolby digital sound.

  • Why Only when playing iTunes I have no audio, no sound?

Why Only when playing iTunes I have no audio, no sound after setting up Apple TV? Worked fine before that.

I had this problem, too. It was on my phone, though, but it seems to be a problem that many people have.
I have fixed it. It cost me 99 cents.
My phone said I had 247 photos/videos. Itunes said I had 1700+. Both said that Photos & Video were taking up 10.8 GB of storage.
On my phone, I went to Settings --> iCloud --> Storage --> Change Storage Plan
    I selected the 20GB plan for $0.99 a month
Then, I went to Settings --> iCloud --> Photos
I enabled My Photo Stream (slider to the right/green)
Then, I got on WiFi. I don't know how long it took, certainly not long enough to upload gigabytes of data, but I saw that my Photos & Camera app was using a far more reasonable amount of storage (1.3 GB, rather than 10.8 GB). I checked this by going to
Settings --> General --> Usage --> Manage Storage
Because I don't want the 20GB iCloud plan, I went back to
Settings --> iCloud --> Storage --> Change Storage Plan --> Downgrade Options (at the bottom)
... and I selected the 5 GB Free plan again.
    Now for a little rant.
I am very unhappy that I had to give Apple one thin dime to have this fixed. After spending a couple of hours trying to figure out why I can barely use any storage on my phone, I had to pay to fix it. Ridiculous.
I still enjoy using Apple products, but I enjoy using them less and less over time. Not only is every release of iTunes less usable than the previous one, the last one wouldn't even install on my machine. That was about another six hours lost trying to figure out the problem.

    Hi mikefrompoland,
For more information about 5.1 Surround Sound in iTunes, you may find the following article helpful (it is primarily aimed at Mac users, but the settings in Windows should be similar):

Note: For surround sound to work, the content being played must be encoded to support it.

sound doesn't work (only in firefox). adobe flash player doesn't work correctly, thought it's installed. can't solve the problem. i need Sound.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == don't know

What does the Adobe test page say?
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • No sound on Windows 7 Boot Camp

I've had this problem for a while now, I just ignored it in the past, now I'm really fed up. I've tried everything, downloading Realteck, burning BootCamp drivers onto the CD (I have a Lion which came with no disc), I tried playing around with the Sound in Control Pannel. Someone please help me!

  • Never used microphone input before, sound recorder window okay, no sound output.

Sound from sound recorder input goes nowhere, a sound window is supposed to open, it does not.
There is some software missing in my pavilion g7 laptop.  Media player sound is fine, internet sound
is fine, only sound missing is from the microphone input.  The sound recorder window is open and the
recording bar is moving as the input varies, how do I get the sound to the speakers.  Never used this
option before, it might be defective from the factory.
    This question was solved.

Problem solved.  You cannot turn on computer with the microphone or other audio cable plugged in.
Otherwise the computer does not respond to the inputs, you have to plug in the microphone or audio
cable after logging in and then a window will open that allows you to select the that input over the default.

  • 5.1 sound while in Vista - only Stereo in Game

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Professional SeriesDriver: Latest CL DriverGame: America's Army 2.8. uses OpenAL sound 5.1 sound works fine while in Vista, but when I play game it's only in stereo. If I tab out of the game and back to Vista, I can play 5. sound, go back to game only stereo. The game plays 5. sound in Windows XP. I have tried with XP Compatibility Mode on and off - no difference. AA is based on UT. Any suggestions?
Message Edited by SoCal65 on 05-0-200709:59 AM

If you haven't already make sure you uncheck "System driver" in the AA in game audio settings. Why they called it that is anyone's guess as what that setting does is determine whether the game uses its own OpenAL (which is 3-4 years old, and who knows how many OpenAL updates behind), or uses the OpenAL that gets installed with your cards drivers (or download and install yourself).
It is too bad the AA devs and PB don't get they're collective thumbs out and allow you to replace the one that comes in the game with the latest like you can in BF2.

  • Loss of sound in Windows XP in - requiring drivers to be re-loaded

This is a consistent problem under randem circumstances.
I suffer a complete loss of sound in Windows XP and the only resolution is to re-install the whole set of Bootcamp drivers or just the REALTEK audio drivers.
Sometimes after re-installing this still does not work.
Any experience of this and solutions?

Hello Ian and welcome to forums.
You might want to run the application 'Audio MIDI Setup' (/Applications/Utilities) and see if anything there is perhaps a mismatch with your particular audio configuration expectations...

  • No sound after Windows XP reinstall

    # Hello Everyone,
I reinstalled Windows XP and now my sound isn't working. I have all the drivers installed, the card is acti've and shows as working in the Device Manager. When I start the computer, I get the Windows sound when Windows loads, at least the first couple of seconds of it, then it stops and no more sound. Any help will be appreciated.

    ' Rognarok,
. In Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, Audio tab, is your Soundblaster selected as the default Recording and Playback device? Also, you may want to place a check in the box next to "Use only default devices."
    2. In Control Panel, Administrati've Tools, click on Services. Make sure Windows Audio is started and set to Automatic.
