No audio on punch in

Hi all,
hope someone can help with this one.
Sometimes when I am doing drop ins using punch on the fly, no audio gets recorded..weird. If I deselect the record button and reselect it it seems towork again but this should not be surely. I am not using software monitoring but instead using cuemix dsp on my motu 192hd to avoid latency problems.
Any suggestions would be most welcome as it is a very annoying problem.
Thank you,
James Blen

yes, it was happening to me also. my work around was to create a new track for the same audio object and do the overdubs there. But now I think I figured it out. I have to have the track I am recording to selected or no audio records. So even though a track was record enabled, no audio would record unless that track was highlighted. I don't know if this is the way it is suppose to be but, that's the way I have to work.

  • Still no audio on punch on the fly

    Tearing my hair out!
Was recording an album this week and on doing overdubs and dropping in on the fly I would just get a flatline but on programming the drop it was fine, so frustrating.
My AD's are a motu 192 hd and a motu 24io.Both are clocked off an apogee Big Ben.
can anyone help before I go mad!
p/s/ I have tried the highlighting the track thing and also creting a dup. track for drops using the same voice.
    Yours hopefully

  • Audio Out Jack Quality

Does the iMac sacrifice some audio output punch by making the audio/headphone jack double-up as an optical out?
I noticed when plugging in a headset or AC-Powered Logitech speakers with a Sub-Woofer that the loudness is not so loud, not as loud as I would expect.
Interestingly, the same Logitech speakers plugged into my Airport Express and streamed to sound louder. Combined with the multiple speaker option of AE and the built-in speakers sounds the best/loudest.

  • Change sound to mono to normalize audio of a movie?

Hi, newbie here. Sorry if this is obvious, just trying to learn & can't find this in the help docs so thought I'd ask here:
Without trying to sound like a whiner, it seems like no matter what DVD, TV, DVD player & recorder I've bought since 2000 I have to keep the volume remote in hand the whole time due to needing to turn up the sound to hear what the actors are saying then having to turn it down quickly due to explosions in the movie, loud background music, whatever (I live in an apartment so don't want to hear it from the neighbors).
I figured it might have to do with being forced to buy equipment with 5.1, surround sound, whatever.
I've tried a Surround sound Processor hooked to my TV but that didn't work.
So maybe I don't want mono as such but I just wondered what the best methods are for normalizing volumes for movies in APE7 if I rip amend and reauthor (and yes, the copies would just be for my own personal use etc. just my playing copies).
So let me know how to do this if I can with APE7, if not, any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the replies. :)

For the problem with your listening enjoyment, you might want to recalibrate your system a bit. In most Hollywood-type movies, the dialog is mainly centered, with some spatial info and bleed to the Front Left & Right. This is where it should be, and the main reason for the Center channel. Most systems come setup with the Center channel attenuated about -6db. This means that the SFX, and usually the music, overpower it. Next the audio engineers punch UP the SFX and the music some more. This is often done for a bit of "shock factor," and to let your LFE channel really prove that it can work. What ends up happening is that the Center channel is now ~-9db to -12db down from the rest of the audio programming, i.e. very hard to hear, especially when the actors are whispering. By recalibrating your system to diminish the LFE a bit, and increase the gain of the Center channel only, you will likely realize a vast improvement in listening to most movies.
When I mix for DVD, I always work to keep the dialog clean, fairly centered (unless we need to explore the spatial relationships), fed to the Center, with about -3db bleed to Left and Right Front, and also make sure my music is way, way below the level of the dialog.
Obviously a test DVD and a good sound pressure level meter would be ideal for this, but you can do it via listening. The biggest hangup is that the controls for the receiver are usually ill-placed to get an idea of how it sounds from a normal listening position. It is best to attempt this with two people - the listener and teh person at the controls.
Now, you mention 5.1 audio. I do not believe that PE can Export, or author DD 5.1 SS. I can Import it, but the output will be stereo. Premiere Pro, with the SurCode plug-in, CAN Export DD 5.1 SS for authoring in Encore.

  • Punched audio regions are visible but wrong older pass plays back.errgh

This has happened to me before. VERY FRUSTRATING. Why aren't the latest punched in audio regions sounding even after you trick the arrange window into showing them.(I hate that you have to click all over the place to get regions with punch-ins to behave visually)..and some times what you see is not what you get to hear.I end up deleting old passes in the audio window until the one take is the only one left. This is a terrible workaround.I do not want to use toggle erase mode either.Just want to hear what I see in the arrange window.Any suggestions, settings, modes I might be missing ? It's getting difficult to trust punching in audio when a crucial take is getting lost under layers, or isn't there for review immediately !!

pardon,I'm a little confused... Scenario:Not using cycle record. One track for a lead vocal.I puch in vocal phrases. Is there a technique for going back to earlier pass takes and lock a take in the arrange window if I want to ?Why create duplicate tracks?I do not want to create extra tracks, want the lead vocal to be on it's own single track that has punches.I usually only want the most recent punch as I move on after a good take.In this current song I rewind happy to hear my performance but I end up seeing it(the punch)but hearing and underlying take ??? Why. PLease elaborate. Thanks ~

  • How can I convert a track with multiple comps to one new complet audio file

I have one track that is great - but it is composed of different sections (NOT regions) which are different comps from punching in on different regions -- (you can see the divisions between the comps, and each different comp has its comp number (or name) - but these are NOT region divisions). I would like to make the whole track one new audio file to work with - that is, join all the comps together as one new audio file (as you would join separate regions on a track into one new audio file). All I can think of is to unpack the track (comps) onto different tracks (channel strips) which would make each comp a new region on a new track and then paste them back together and then make an audio file, but this seems fairly complicated

hey - it appears that this worked -- i exported it to another track (as an audio file -- this is done in the "file" menu) and it now is on a new track in t he same project as one audio file without an divisions between the comps -- appears to have worked -thank you so much (btw, don't forget to tell it what type of file you want it exported as, it wants to default to aif, --i record in wav files 24 bit
thanks again for everyone's responses - this forum has helped me so much

  • Recording MIDI and Audio at the same time....

I am having an issue recording a simple piano softsynth along with a guide vocal. Whenever I punch in, the audio punches fine but the MIDI/softsynth track hiccups, causing a lag in sound even though the MIDI info seems to record fine. Also, this does not happen when recording MIDI alone-everything punches in fine. Is there some setting I'm missing somewhere or is Logic not able to do this smoothly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Fred,
I bring you my wisdom...Yes there is hope.
What you need to do is set the part you want to bounce into cycle mode. Dont worry, it will not cycle, it just knows now where to start and stop.
Audio and Midi can be recorded at the same time, as long as the midi is from an AU within the mac and not from an external source.
    Good luck,
    Joe

  • Why does Premiere Pro CS5 process audio source before exporting clip in AME CS5?

Hello everyone, my first post here. I am currently trying out the trial CS5 Master Collection on my MacBook Pro. I've been using Premiere Pro CS5 to put together family videos. I select a certain portion of a sequence and queue it for export in Media Encoder CS5 in the format H.264 for iPod with video and audio.
Now in AME I have a queue list of about 5 clips from the sequence. But when I hit the Start Queue button, the bottom left of the progress bar states "Adobe Premiere Pro processing audio source from [then file name]"  for all 5 clips from the sequence then creates the first output file.
Then it moves to encode the second and again states "Adobe Premiere Pro processing audio source from [then file name]"  for all 5 clips of mt sequence then spits out only the second output file.
This continues for the remaining 3 output files. The total sequence length is ~32 minutes with transitions and it takes about 35 minutes to export which is all consumed by the process audio source of the 5 clips in my sequence for 5 separate times.
Is there a certain reason why Media Encoder or Premiere Pro does this process of audio source? Is this process necessary or needed? I experimented with choosing different output formats but the results are the same. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Now that's pretty good follow-up to your first post, and quickly too! Nice detective work.
As you have found, there is basically a Render/Replace operation going on in PrPro, to get the material in the correct form for AME.
Thank you for reporting, as it saved me, and others, from basically saying what you said.
Good luck, and sorry that you beat us to the punch.

  • Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver Scarlett 2i2 in Premiere CC2014 not working

    Hi everybody.
I just recently upgraded to CC and cannot use my Audio Interface with it.
    Info:
    i7
    Windows 7 Ultimate
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, drivers up to date
Premiere Pro CC 2014 up do date
    GeForce GTX Titan
In CS6 i have set the audio hardware to Focusrite USB 2.0 Audio Driver.
    ASIO Settings:
    Buffer length 10
    In Latency is 19,6
    Out latency is 28,9
    Sample Rate 48000
...and it works like a charm.
In CC 2014 however, i can only use Premiere WDM sound.
If i choose the Focusrite, my sequence won't play. I can still scrub but with no audio.
    Also recording does not work.
I often have to punch in layout-voiceovers for timing and need this to work, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thank you all!

Premiere Pro is not the best with USB audio.  Sometime it works, often it doesn't.  My recommendation is to skip any type of USB audio and only use real audio connections.
    Thank you for your input.
I am using this setup in CS6 and it works great but could not get it to work with CC. So i can't just settle with "skip any type of USB audio".
    Anyway, i figured it out:
I chose Premiere Pro WDM sound instead of the scarlett and in the ASIO settings chose the Scralett as input. works just how it's supposed to now.

  • Punch in/out latency issue!

I'm having a pause in my audio when I punch in and out of logic. The song is still rolling but the music stops for a second. I know this is a simple hardware setting. I can't remember if it's the buffer size. Anyway, is there a standard buffer size, etc...?
    Thanks!!

  • 2 Bar Count Off Audio Problems

    USING 7.21
    - I have the recording preference set to 2 bar count off
I am trying to record a mono audio part. I start at bar 1 - and then stop after bar 5 - because I messed up.
    - I locate to bar five so that I can start recording there.
    - I go directly into record - and because of the 2 bar count off - it will start playing from bar 3 and go into record at bar 5...
    - the problem is that I cannot hear the previously recorded audio on this track starting at bar 3.... it seems as though the 2 bar count off mutes the previously recorded audio...
    - this is of course not good because the person being recorded needs to hear what they previously did.
Q: How do I actually hear the previously recorded audio at bars 3 and 4 with 2 bar count off?

It appears that logics basic design is the problem I'm having - when you going to record the reference manual says: "A “count-in” is heard. Signals will be recorded during this time. " As far as I'm concerned - I have no interest in having it record before I wanted to or I would have created a different start point.
Let me explain my situation - why I am asking for this:
This basic technique is for those of us ( I'm sure many of us on the list)
... Who are recording themselves while holding an instrument - such as a
guitar - bass - wind instrument etc. In that case it is not convenient to
have to press the bunch of buttons every time you want to punch and fix
something ( of course - maybe we should just be practicing more ) ... And
instead - the easiest thing is to just set the SPL at the punch point and
then hit record ... 2 simple mouse clicks... Yipee! - but with logics " logic" you cannot hear what you just played ... assuming you are creating something new such as an improvised solo or what ever ... of course you would need to hear those very important count off audio bars on this track!
Using auto-drop is also a possibility however not as good .... In this case
you would have to set the in point and also the out point ... ( or drag with
the mouse while holding the option key - and now you need to use 2 hands
instead of one - so now you have to put your instrument down) then you have
to set the song position something prior to that ... This is way too many
    buttons to press...
*The whole point here is: to easily create one Master track with as few button presses as possible ... and the least (comping of tracks) ...
If anyone has any better ways to deal with this scenario ... I would love to
    hear your thoughts ...

  • Weird auto punch bug in Logic Pro X

I set up for an auto punch. Hit record and the auto punch works fine, however it creates what looks like a midi punch on an adjacent track, that wasn't even selected. I can delete this weird midi punch and reconnect the audio file and the adjacent track, so nothing is lost. But this is not right and a bit of a hassle.
I'm running OS 10.8 on a dedicated Mac Mini, with nothing else running. This Mac Mini is totally dedicated for the recording studio.
I've cleaned permissions, and it seems to do better for a while, but then, randomly it will reoccur.
I'm not seeing this anomaly anywhere else in the Community.
    Any advise?

I can actually recreate this behaviour.
    1. Create two audio tracks with identical inputs
    2. Set a punch in and out point (1 bar)
crucial: 3. Select the first track and record arm the second track
    4. Set the playhead before the punch-in point, hit record and play some random MIDI
    I got this:
However, when I disarm audio 4, it's as it should be: audio gets recorded on audio 3, and the MIDI does not get recorded at all. So it seems it's a matter of making sure no unselected track is armed.

  • Audio insert editting from FCP to DigiBeta clicks at insert point

Punching in audio on a DigiBeta deck gives a small click in the sound. This is probably due to no audio being played before the punch is made, so the DigiBeta can't crossfade the sound.
When syncing the DigiBeta to Pro Tools the punch is seamless.
This is really bothering since this means we need to switch applications and change the patch on the patchbay whenever there needs to be something fixed in the audio.
We also insert titles in the picture, so it would be nice if we could control the deck from one and the same application. The patch is also simpler, just RS422 and SDI, instead of LTC, RS422 and AES/EBU.

Could be a difference in OS's causing the problem, but I can't say for sure. You could try using the OMF export option instead. I almost guarantee it will work.

  • How do I change the length of an audio file?

How do I change the length of an audio file without changing the actual recording?
I want to aligne start and end points to the rest of my project.

Well, yes and no. I have tried the Bounce track in place function, but it did not do what I was after. However, today I got an idea that solved the problem. I copied the region I had punched in several times. Then I used the Bounce track in place function. This made a track that was just as long as all the other tracks. Finally I silenced the audio "clips" that I had used to make the region longer. I have now 24 tracks to transfer to the Alesis HD 24 that starts, and ends, at the exact same point. This will suit the Alesis software just fine, I think.
    Thanks for the tips.
