Problems changing colour using Graphics class in java.awt
Hi,
The problem only happens when more than two images are on a panel. In this case, I have to strings that are drawn. The first drawn string is called "A" the second drawn string is called "B". However, when i change the colour of "B" to let's say Red, the panel erases the letter "B" and insteads changes "A" to red. How can I fix this so that when the user chooses the colour red it changes the colour of the latest drawn string and not the first one. please help!!!!
import java.awt.*;
public class StringPanel extends GBPanel
private String shape = "clear", str;
private int x, y;
private Color color = Color.black;
public void paintComponent(Graphics g)
super.paintComponent(g);
g.setColor (color);
if(shape.equalsIgnoreCase("draw string"))
g.setColor(color);
g.drawString(str, x, y);
else if (shape.equalsIgnoreCase("exit"))
System.exit(0);
public void drawCurve(Color color)
this.color = color;
repaint();
public void drawString(String shape, String str, int x, int y)
this.shape = shape;
this.str = str;
this.x = x;
this.y = y;
repaint();
public void drawString1(String shape, String str, int x, int y)
Graphics g = getGraphics();
g.setColor(color);
if (shape.equalsIgnoreCase("draw string"))
g.setColor(color);
g.drawString(str, x, y);
else
repaint();
}well, as I said, I can't remember what the update method thing was for... I think it was related to not clearing the screen first.
Anyway, if you maintain a list of objects that should be drawn and then in the paintComponent method, loop thru the list of objects and redraw them, it will work. Then you change the state of an object and call repaint. When you are going to change color, you need to, in effect, redraw the entire affected area. Now this can be done partially with clipping, but it's complicated to deal with that. So the simplest way is just redraw everything on repaint. -
Help! Colour banding graphics problem /posterization?
Hi.
I've been having a few problems lately with colour banding/gradients/posterization. I first noticed it 3 or 3 days ago in photoshop, and seem to have noticed it's mostly system wide. I ask her because you're all clever and I don't have a clue what to do next! So please help me!
Quoted from my thread somewhere else that I've had no luck with and was recomendded to try here...
Since yesterday whenever I'm using Photoshop and there is blurred edges/gradients etc, basically not solid colours, there is really noticeable sharp colour banding lines around it.
It's happened before and I've accidentally had it on 8-bit instead of 16-bit, but I've checked all that and it's on 16-bit.
I've googled it and the only suggestion was about duplicating the layer and blurring it then adding noise, but that didn't even work.
[EDIT] SINCE THEN I HAVE REALISED IT IS AFFECTING SYSTEM WIDE GRADIENTS AND COLOURS
My system is set to Highest 32-bit too. I changed it to 16-bit to see what happened and it made the banding 10 times worse.
An example of the problem
Posted: Thu May 03, 2012 7:32 pm Post subject:
It's supposed to be a smooth gradient. I didn't use the gradient tool, I used the brush tool with solid white and then smudged and blurred it like I always do.
That's a good point, and actually I did start it as an 8-bit originally (my photoshop has been starting as 8-bit, grayscale for a few weeks now and I don't know why) but then after I remembered and changed it to 16-bit, and noticed the banding, I closed that document and started a new one and changed it to 16-bit RGB when the pop-up for a new document came up.
The resolution is always 72pixels/inch, and the size 256x512, colour mode RGB.
In advanced it says colour profile Working RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 which I have no clue what means, and I never usually click advanced so I don't know if that is usually that or different.
When I use the brush tool and blur and smudge it it's fine, with no banding. It's only when I lower the opacity of that layer, or use Hue/Saturation and Lightness to darken it so it's hardly visible that the banding appears.
I've just tried it again with a fresh new document and it's still the same. Even in 32-bit it's exactly the same.
It's done it before, and all I did was close and reopen Photoshop and it was all fine again, but this time it happened last night and since then I have restarted my computer, had it turned off for hours, and I've even tried it on gimp and it's the same.
Ruled out that it's my monitor, tried a different one that I know works perfectly and it's still the same.
I've double checked all drivers, and monitor profiles, and drivers for my monitor, and colour profiles, and colour management, my graphics card settings, device manager for problems with any hardware, and everythings coming back fine. Could it be that my graphics card is old and just needs replacing? I'm not good with which one to buy so would getting a new one the same be of any help? The computer is about 6 years old, and the only thing changed on it is the RAM and hard drive.
I don't really want to end up not using this computer anymore if it's a simple graphics card issue, I just don't know how to tell if it is.
The thread that is from is here if you want to see some suggestions I've already had.http://www.imvu.com/catalog/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpbb2&file=viewtopic.php&t=423942 &postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
My username is 'Ao' on there so that is me explaining the problem.
To add to that...
Here is another example of what is happening.
I'm thinking from all the answers I got from google its a graphics card problem. Only problem is all the updates are installed, and I can't find anywhere that sells my graphics card to buy a new one. So I need to know which graphics card will work with my system right now?
I've done some tests so you can see my system details. Im clueless with which one to buy so please help.

When I go to color managment in the first tab, devices, where it says profiles associated with this device it is empty, and 'use my settings for this device' is unticked. It says device at the top and mine says 'Display: Generic Pnp Monitor - Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family'.
I did try to set up my monitor and had the .icc file for it in that list that pops up when I tick use my settings and click add, and I think I did set the profile to be the one for my monitor. I can't remember exactly how I did it and where I get that .icc file from, I've been through so many settings and websites trying to fix this.
It's not like I've recently changed any hardware or anything or my monitor, I was on photoshop one minute and it worked fine, then the next it just didn't. It's so strange because all I was doing at the time was using photoshop and I don't understand how it can go from working fine to all these problems with graphics and the banding. It's so confusing.
I can noticeably see banding on that image. It is still a gradient and smooth to a degree, but there is obvious lines of colour differences, and a harsher line on the outside.
Is that smooth for you? For me there is very obvious banding, especially at the top on the white on black.
I just don't know what else to do. I've tried everything I can think of, and spent hours upon hours on google. I've even tried a system restore to put it back to how it was when it was working perfectly, but it's still the same. I tried it on another monitor, just plug and play, and it was the same. Is there an easy way to install a monitor properly so that it should in theory work perfect? Because you're talking about the monitor profile, but with the second one I tried to test it all I did was plug it in and it was still the same. I've even tried it on my tv, and as I remember I think it was less noticeable, but then again that might be because of my tv settings because my tv is quite dark.
Just clueless as to what else to do now. I don't want to go out and buy a new computer for £100's over this, as I don't really have the funds to do so but I need a computer so the only option would be to sell my new iphone that I only got last week! Which I obviously don't want to do. That's how desperate I am to fix this though. -
Adobe InDesign, Text Colour and Graphic Overlay
Greetings everyone!
I am using Adobe InDesign to construct a portfolio and I am having a few small issues with my cover of the portfolio. I have integrated several graphics that are JPEG images into the cover and I added some transparency onto them. I am not sure how I can make it so that the text box is over the graphic. I am unable to press the text frame and instead, it seems like the frame for the graphic only ever appears as seen here in the top portion of my cover.
I am not sure how I can get the text frames to show here. What is weird is that I can physically put the text over the graphic by moving the graphic but still the text frames do not appear. This is related, I think, to my other issue in that the graphics appear to change the colour of my text somewhat when the text frame intersects the graphic. It is not very noticeable but you can see it better in the photo below. Above, what is really strange is how my name is black (Michal Laszczuk) while the word portfolio is grey(affected by the white background?) though it should be the same colour since the white background intersects both words. If I am working from the premise regarding the colour alteration due to the graphic, then the colour should be faded for both "Michal Laszczuk" and "Portfolio". Does anyone know what is up here?
On a side note, Im not sure why the graphics appear pixelated when not viewed in overprint preview.
As seen above, I am assuming that the text gets faded since the background colour of the graphic is white as seen below.
Does anyone know a way to eliminate this fading effect? I thought that if I put the text over the graphic, the colour of the text would not be impacted.This is clearly not the case as seen below. It seems like the darker elements of the graphic make the text darker while the white background fades the text.
It is a subtle difference but it is noticeable when you look at the screen long enough. Does this have to do with the transparency effect that I introduced to the graphic or is it the nature of the jpeg graphic? It seems like the white background and colour of the graphic affect the text. Is there an easy way to make it so that the text is not affected? I would be happy to clarify anything or give more detail if this situation appears too confusing.
Cheers!I don't 'hope' for anything...the OP doesn't seem to understand 'frames'--am just trying to walk someone thru the process of moving text to another layer.
It also appears that a common mistake was made that allowed transparency settings to be applied to all elements.
my explanation/solution will get the OP partially where they need to be and they might realize the error that was made and actually learn how to use the program -
Colourful squares graphics problem
Hey folks,
I've got a recurring graphics problem where on certain applications green and purple squares/lines begin to hover and flicker on the screen. Also, graphics on games such as Civilization IV are distorted, and also exhibit said squares. I've seen this happen on PhotoBooth, Coverflow, Safari, and image heavy pdfs on Preview. I've never seen them playing movies or Photoshop.
http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/5051/problem2kj1.png
What's odd is that I can screen capture them, and with them there, things still function properly (mouse, keyboard, applications). Also, sometimes they go away, and can be 'deleted' by moving a window around the screen to 'erase' them. Other times, they just accumulate. Usually a restart is required to get rid of them, but if I open the same application again, boom! Back again.
I'm guessing, after reading on all these forum discussions, that it could be a graphics card error or something, but I was wondering if anybody else had any insight/answers, or advice about what to do or what to tell the Apple Support people down at the store/on the phone.
Thanks in advance!An error like this, especially if it reoccurs frequently and/or causes crashes or kernel panics is usually a very good indicator of bad Video RAM. That's a hardware problem that will require Apple to replace your entire logic board (since the VRAM is soldered to the board).
Take the computer to your local Apple store along with the photos you have of the problem. Explain the situation to the genius and he'll most likely send your laptop off for repairs. -
For example this page I am now working on is simply text with some text in blue, no graphics on page and an empty black and white bar at the top of the page under Ask a Question
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings and that you allow pages to choose their colors in Firefox.

How to create a plugin to stamp texts and not an image into a pdf document
How to create plugin to stamp texts and not an image.. i just want it to work like the stamper plugin found in sdk sample but here i need text to be stamped instead of an image.. Is it possible? kindly give me some ideas?how to go about it.. can this be done by modfying the stamper sample code?
Thank youThis is possible, but it is a serious project, not something to be cut around from sample code. You will need to study the "graphics" and "text" chapters of the PDF specification in some detail to understand the PDF graphics model, including colour spaces, graphics state, and transformation matrixes; if working with annotations understand them and the requirement for appearance stream. There are various ways to add content to a PDF, but the PDFEdit API is probably the most accessible.

All slide transitions 'lost' at conference presentation
This is a really weird one. I spent ages preparing my Keynote presentation for a big conference. I triple checked of course and all was great, UNTIL I connected my macbook pro to the projector set-up at the podium.
The tech guy asked me to adjust the screen size in 'settings' which I did,
BUT then when I went back into the presentation, EVERY transition was gone and replaced with 'wipe' at 2 or 3 seconds plus, some of the colours in graphic images, eg my logo had changed from green to purple.
Can anyone explain this, and more important, what do I need to do to 'lock' or secure my specific transitions, so that it doesn't happen again.
thanks if you can help
PhilipAs you say, this is weird; it has never happened to me, probably never before to you, either, and I can't recall ever hearing about it from anyone. My scenario, when I use my own Mac to present (which I always insist upon, and you have done), is simply plug into beamer, then "Detect Displays". When that has happened and I run the KN presentation, everything on the screen looks as it should, and it would never have occurred to me to adjust the screen size, as you were asked to do. And, of course, the presentation worked just as I'd constructed it, including transitions and animations (except when I carelessly clicked when I should have waited - but that's my fault, and a different kind of problem). And mostly, my presentation was never changed, as you describe, and I've never even thought of "locking" it to prevent such a change, and I can't believe it should be necessary. I suspect mine is the usual scenario.
Perhaps you can give some more detail. Like you, I have a 13" MBP. My current (and regular) screen resolution is 1280x800; what's yours? I don't have to change this for presentations. (When I was less experienced, I tried to, or thought it was necessary, but only succeeded in lousing things up, albeit only temporarily.)
In my "Slideshow Preferences", I've activated "Scale slides up to fit display", and not activated the two "Reduce Cube/Flip transitions to avoid clipping". I wonder what your original transitions were.
Re the color problem. I wonder if this might be a color calibration issue. I've never altered the calibration, because when I fooled with this setting, things never got better, only worse.
Most disturbing, of course, is that, if I understand you correctly, your transitions didn't change only for the presentation (disturbing enough), but have remained changed, i.e., even when you run it on your Mac, without projection. First: am I right, is this really so? If so, something erroneously got saved, or perhaps a pref file corrupted.
Get back here with more detail, including any other problems or "weirdness" you've been having. -
Hi, My name is Francisco, I am new in Java and have this project due this week can someone really help me, I am really struggling with this project. I am using IDE (NETBEANS) for developing this application. I really appreciate if someone can help me. Below is the project requirements.
Thank so much.
This practical work is to write a media management software suite. It stores details of your photos, music and movies (at least these three).
There is a need to standardise three names for software swapping. You should adhere to the following:
* the front end package should be called frontend
* the back end package should be called backend
* the interfaces Storage and Storable to be declared in a separate package called utilities
* the primary class implemented in the back end (the one that implements storage) should be called Database
You should spell these identifiers exactly as above, otherwise your frontend/backend will not swap with other components.
Detail
The project must be written using two separate packages, a front end and a back end. The front end interfaces with the user, takes input requests and returns results. Typical commands would be:
* add/photo
* add/soundTrack
* search all for titles containing "river"
* seacrh all for artist containing "river"
* delete a particvular item.
Each entry in the system should have a title, date of entry and notes. Additionally, music should have an artist, and movies should have a length of movie entry.
The back-end provides the storage, and will simply use a Vector, configured as a Vector<Entry> or similar. This separation of systems in to front and back end (user interface and the database) is a common feature of modern large-scale software.
Interfacing
The front end and the back end will "talk" to each other using an interface. This interface will be standard and is specified here. This interface will be extended during the next week, but will be fixed after the lecture on October 25th.
Classes to be stored in the back-end will implement the Storable interface. It may be a tagging interface, but designers may extend it as required.
interface Storable {
// designers may add requirements here
The main back-end class will implement the Storage interface. It must not be modified after the due date for setting it (you will find out why later).
interface Storage {
void add(Storable s);
void delete(Storable s);
void saveDatabase(String s); // saves database to file specified by String
void loadDatabase (String s); // load the database
// iterate through the database
void reset(); // reset
boolean hasMore(); // if there is another element available for the next() method
Storable next(); // get the next item
Input/output
Output (display to the user) should be on-screen using JFrames, JPanels etc. You should mainly write text [g.drawChars("... ], but a bit of colour (a graphic in a separate JPanelto distinguish photos from music etc) is a requirement.
Input should be using the Scanner class.
You can improve the input & output by adding GUI components (buttons, textboxes etc) either by directly using Swing components or by using the Form generator in Netbeans. But if you do this, then it's up to you. In particular, event handling in Java -which you will need to understand if you use the Swing components directly - is fairly complex (but well covered in the tutorial). Note that the full GUI interaction - including event handling - is covered in HIT212.
Options
For small amount of extra marks:
* Input using JOptionPane (see API and tutorial)
* Input using a text box (see Using Text Components in the Java tutorial).
* Using buttons etc (the full GUI)
It will jazz your presentation up, but if you want to avoid a bit of extra research, or are having trouble with the concepts, avoid the last two options. The full GUI is taught in the next subject and - in particular - you will have to understand Java's model for event-handlers and event-listeners. It's all in the tutorial, but will not be discussed in class or tutorials.
Saving the database
Assuming the database is saved as a Vector of Storables, the whole Vector may be saved by defining an ObjectOutputStream:
ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("C:/..."));
The Vector (assume it is called store) is then put to disc by the following code:
oos.writeObject(store);
oos.close();
Reading the database back in is as simple. Just define an ObjectInputStream. See the API (ObjectOutputStream, ObjectInputStream) for details.
[Hint: Not all Objects can be written to disc - for security, by default objects cannot be written to disc. If a designer intends objects to be written, they must implement the tagging interface Serializable. Look up Serializable in the API]
Requirements
* Storage must be implemented using a Vector.
* There must be two distinct packages - backend and frontend. These must be implemented as Java packages.
* All classes to be stored must implement the Storable interface (which may be modified)
* The back end must implement the Storage interface (which cannot be modified).
* Group size of one or two. Individuals can identify the code areas they primarily wrote.
Marking criteria
The following criteria will be used
* Good coding style, methods short and clear, good variable naming, follows Java naming conventions
* Interfaces used as specified. All front-end/back-end communication enforced through the storage classDon't sit on your thumbs waiting for magic to happen. Also, nobody here is going to do your homework for you. If you have some succinct, specific, java-related questions you might get somewhere. As it is right now, you're going nowhere in a hurry.

HOT TIP to make pages load faster (img background?)
OK this obviously won't apple to everyone but... I managed to DRAMATICALLY reduce the page load time.
Firstly, this tip is for you if you're using a background image on your page - in the content for example - where I'm using mine.
iWeb, for some reason known only to the developers, creates a PNG image the COMPLETE size of your web page!
So if you're site is 700px wide and you've got a lot of photos on a page then it could go say 3000px in height. iWeb will create a 700px X 3300px (or so) PNG with your background.
THIS WAS 1.4MB!!!! for me..... absolutely crazy!
They put in no-repeat on the background CSS.
So how to fix this...
It's actually quite easy
1) Publish to a directory
2) using photoshop or some other image editing tool that can open PNG files, open up the largest background_image1.png - largest being largest in px X px - e.g. 700 X 3300 is bigger than 700X1800
3) crop the image in width from 700px to 5px - yep you read that right - crop it to 5px!
(Now obviously this depends on the image you're using in the background but I am assuming that most images are patterns that repeat horizontally... if you have another image that repeats horizontally and is bigger than 5px then make the image as wide as your repeating image)
4) save the image as a JPG
5) open MassReplaceIt
6) create a query where you replace /background_image1.png) no-repeat with /background_image1.jpg) repeat-x
7) set it to update all HTML pages that use a background
8) copy the JPG to all folders that have the background image (unfortunately as the folder name is different it's difficult to just put the image in the /images directory - and i don't know how to use wildcards in massreplaceit - any tips welcome)
NOTE: I am using the same image background on all pages for consistency therefore I have the same filename - I am assuming that it's like that for everyone - the filename that is - so checkout that the replace will work for you.
Well hope that helps you - I managed to reduce the page load times dramatically and now I can actually consider using iWeb for generating pages for my family in Australia who are still on 56Kbit modems and don't have broadband available.
Cheers

Your entire home page is made entirely from
images.....consider using some
use of CSS and background colour, minimal graphics and some
actual text, and
you'll be a long way better off.

Corrupt Display in PP CS6 During Hover Scrub
I'm running Premiere Pro CS6 on a Win 7 x64 machine with 12GB RAM with an ATI HD 4800 graphics card. When I use hover scrub in the project window the video image goes inverted black and white and upside down! This often leads to the same problem with the display in the program window. Exiting and restarting does the same thing. If I don't use hover scrub I have no problems with the video display and can produce projects without problems.
This also happened with Encore and a photo slideshow but the results were more colourful!
Graphics card drivers are up to date, as are OS patches and Creative Suite patches.
Any ideas? I'm not using any specialised video hardware
Premier Problem (above)
(Encore problem above)Yes, I have the same problem. Radeon HD 7950 with the latest drivers 8.01.01.1215 on windows 7 all service packs applied. The problem is frequent enough to be totally unproductive but sometimes Premiere keeps running for quite a while.
In my case my system blue screens and I need to boot up and start again. The problem seems to occur due to what is going on in the media library. Scrub never works unless the windows are large enough.
In the above image media is imported but none of it is touched. All looks well.
As soon as I move my mouse over the video the scrubbing starts but it renders weird.
The top right tile is being scrubbed. You can see how the video consists of various tiles that are scrambled. This does not happen when the video window is big enough. In this case the video contains color but sometimes it does not. Crashes happen in both cases very frequently 1 or 2 times per hour and sometimes continuously. I suspect it is a driver issue with ATI. It be the first and last ATI card I ever buy but I am stuck with it. It be nice if I could actually use the software though.
The above example shows scrubbing when the thumbnail is big enough. The Black and White / upside down effect occured with these same files in the same project about 1 hour ago.
[UPDATE]
In the very same screen shown above the PC blue screened as soon as my mouse moved over the bit you can see of the bottom right thumbnail. Sigh. -
I am VERY new to iWeb and this may be a daft question.
Is there any way to get a blank space at the top of a page where I can make my own heading above the navigation bar?
The only solution I have found so far is to take, for example, the "notebook" template with a blank page and then put a colour fill graphic over the strippy yellow header. It seems one can't delete these headers.
This seem a rather crude way of doing things and presumably involves extra code covering things up which also makes me wonder whether it will display properly in various browsers!!
If I take a really blank template I can't move the nav bar from the very top. I would like it below the heading.
Any thoughts out there - or am I just totally ignorant!!Hi Sloanscot
You need to take a look at Inspector>Page Tab, then adjust the Header Height.
There are some further notes on Inspector here.

I'm a graphic designer who works 80% of the time in Adobe InDesign with the remaining 20% split between PhotoShop and Illustrator. I produce professional print designs - brochures, advertising and other print-based work. At work I use a MacPro desktop.
I currently own a G4 Powerbook 867mhz at home with the Adobe CS2 suite of applications but will soon need to upgrade to CS3 and my 512mb RAM and 40gb hard drive is only just holding out. I've been waiting, like many others for the iMac to be upgraded so I can purchase one. Now it's finally here though, I'm not sure whether to go for the 24inch 2.4ghz iMac loaded up with 4gig RAM or a Mac Pro and monitor.
I've tried the iMac first hand in an Apple Store and it feels much faster than anything I've used at work and I think the glossy screen is amazing, so I have no problems there. I'm more concerned that posters in the forums are knocking the graphics card and saying that overall, iMacs aren't 'professional' machines.
Surely a 24inch screen iMac with 4gig RAM will last me a few years - especially as I don't play games or use PhotoShop etc too much, mainly InDesign as I say. Is the poor quality of the graphics card only related to games or PhotoShop performance too?
Can anyone help me decide? Thanks in advance.I am a Pro Photographer working in Photoshop CS3, CaptureOne Pro mainly, amongst a few others. I use a Mac Pro with Eizo CG220 display. It is a very fast and capable machine especially when batch processing hundreds of RAW files.
Colour correction and colour profiling is somewhat complex to get it right, say for example between a display and a printer as both use different methods for creating colour, neither of which are related to one another, however colour profiling is easier from printer to matte screen than printer to glossy or vice versa. I would recommend using a hardware calibration device which does make life a lot easier, then depending on what program you use, disabling any colour correction carried out by the software. I will try and make it easier to understand.
You state you do design, colour and graphics. I would suggest you bare one thing in mind if you opt for the iMac. The glossy screen will make the image very crisp and sharp however the colour profile allocated to your work will look different under a glossy screen than a matte screen, so, if you make any colour corrections on the iMac, it may look ok on your display but it will look somewhat washed out on a matte display if anybody else views the image.
This is because glossy screens are tinted which changes the colour characteristics of the screen and makes colours appear richer, when in actual fact the colour levels in the working colour profile are nowhere near the levels you will see on a glossy screen.
Glossy screens are also more prone to reflection issues, which may not be a problem for you, but the colour issue may well be if 90% of your work is for print and 10% for posters.
If you submit one of your designs with a colour profile allocated to it, which appears fine on the iMac, the printing house which usually uses Quark for their media management and publishing work will happily accept your colour profile, however it may look, in regards photography for example, slightly over exposed, as most publishing houses use matte screens, so the print house would have to colour correct the file submitted. This slows down the publishing process and I would guess could affect future submissions or comissions they give you.
Personally I went for Mac Pro with Quadro FX graphics card and the best monitor I could find as colour is one of the most important factors in photography. What I see on my screen is what comes out of the printer (as near as is possible).
Bear in mind you can only max out the iMac to 4GB RAM, the Mac Pro can take 16GB RAM and there are also additional drive bays for larger hard drive to be accomodated if needs be. The iMac is unfortunately non upgradeable beyond memory for the end user without maxing out the machine on a build to order.
On top of which the Core 2 Duo processor is really a mobile processor designed for laptops but used in many desktops on the market the Intel ViiV was the CPU Intel intended for desktops. The Xeon in Mac Pro's is a workstation CPU capable of more throughput since it uses a higher front side bus than the Core 2 Dup ( Xeon = 1333MHz as opposed to Core2Duo = 800MHz) amongst other factors to do with floating points, algorithms etc etc etc I won't go into because it's really boring (or interesting to those who care about such things).
Hope this doesn't confuse or bore you and I hope this slant helps you in your decision.
