No Device List /Source Pane

I'm trying to locate the Source Pane on Itunes..
I noticed there isn't a DEVICE list on the left
side where it should be.
I only have Library, Store and Playlists.
Can anyone help? Thx.

Devices only appears when you connect an iPod, it's not permanently displayed. If your iPod isn't appearing have a look at this page: iTunes 7 for Windows doesn't recognize iPod

  • I don't have PHOTO listed in my ITUNES source pane so how do I add photos?

I just installed the ITUNES CD onto my new computer Gateway Windows Vista. I read the manual to install photos and it says to click on IPOD and Photos under my source pane. I don't have listed Ipod or Photos.
Under my source pane are listed:
    Library
    Podcasts
    Videos
    Party Shuffle
    Radio
    Music Store
    (and then my music playlists)
And that's it. So how do I intall photos if I don't see the word Photo to click. I don't have adobe photoshop either.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

First of all as the last poster pointed out, the photos tab is not listed under sources, it's one of the preference tabs that can be viewed when the iPod is connected. Here's a simple "How To" on downloading photos from a folder on your hard disk to an iPod:
1 Create a folder on your hard drive to hold the photos you want on your iPod. Call it iPod Photos for example
2 Drag the photos you want from your usual picture folder into the folder you just created
2 Open iTunes, select your iPod in the iTunes Source list. (this will bring up the ipod preferences tabs in the main pane to the right of the source list)
3 Click the Photos tab and select “Synch photos from.”
4 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select the iPod photos folder you created.
iTunes will add "optimised", small TV quality versions of the photos to the iPod for you to view. if you want to include full size photos so you can move them from one computer to another check the the "Include Full Resolution photos" box.

  • Apple TV does not show up in device list

I've read all the post with the same subject but still can not get the Apple TV to show up in the device list of itunes.
I have multiple computers on a wired/wireless network, one is a windows XP laptop machine and it sees the Apple TV fine, can sync with itunes works great. This machine is connected via wireless connection. This machine does not have my music or photos that I want to sync so I want to sync the Apple TV with my desktop, I was just using the laptop as a diagnostic tool and to better understand the interaction between itunes and the Apple TV. I have tried all the steps given and still can not get the Apple TV to show up as a device on the desktop.
I originally had norton firewall on the desktop, uninstalled that so it would not be in the way, did not help. Windows firewall is not enabled.
I have sharing enabled in itunes and I have look for Apple TVs enabled. I have rebooted the router, Apple TV, computers etc. Reinstalled itunes.
I have a linksys wreless router in the system. I have tried connectnig the desktop via a wired connection as well as a wireless connection, no difference. The Apple TV can get on the wireless network fine, it can access the internet fine to play movie trailer etc. I have also connected it directly to the router via a cable, does not help. I tried connecting the desktop to the Apple TV directly with a crossed ethernet cable, did not work.
The desktop can ping the Apple TV.
I am assuming I do not have a problem with ports as the laptop sees the Apple TV fine?
Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
To summarise and for clarity: You have set up your laptop itunes library and it works as it should with the tv, now you are trying to add your desktop and it doesn't see the tv.
First point: the Laptop is your primary library, you can only have one primary library and if you wish to sync from the desktop you will need to make that your primary library instead of the laptop. You will need to turn of syncing for the laptop and register the desktop with the tv for syncing first and then the laptop as a secondary (streaming only) library. If you are trying to use your desktop without de-registering the laptop it will only ever be a secondary (streaming) library.
You may have realised this and if so all well and good, but if not you might want to continue to establish your desktop as a secondary library and satisfy yourself that all is well before turning off your laptop and setting everything up again.
On the assumption you are setting up the desktop as a secondary library at this time, how far have you got with registering the desktop, have you successfully entered the pass codes, did the tv show in the device list at any stage. As a secondary library itunes will only show the tv in it's device list when that itunes library is selected as the source library from the tv itself, could this be why you are unable to see it in the device list.

  • ATV missing from Devices list: a slight variation

My aTV shows up in my iTunes Devices list ONLY when I tell the aTV to set up a new connection. The connection is always successful, and then the aTV vanishes from Devices, never to be seen again. I can successfully stream music, can view movie trailers over the internet with no problems, but I can't sync ANYTHING, particularly photos, because there's nothing in Devices. Also, every day, to start streaming music, I have to go to aTV menu, change source to aTV, then change source BACK to my PC, before it can find anything.
Setup: XP media center edition, everything is WIRED, Linksys router, both aTV and PC are connected to the same NetGear switch. I've made sure ports are enabled in firewall, but same behavior if firewall is completely off.
Any suggestions? (having read a lot of similar posts, I am NOT willing to dissasemble my phone, put it in a bag, tie a string around it, swing it around my head, and scream like a chicken)

  • One solution for AppleTV not appearing in iTunes Devices list

So, this may not be everyone's problem, but I noticed I was having trouble seeing my AppleTV in iTunes sources list when my iBook (the syncing computer) was on wireless, but not when i was plugged into the router via ethernet.
Perplexed by this, I kept investigating and discovered I couldn't even ping the AppleTV when on the iBook was on wireless, but if I plugged into the ethernet, again - it worked. (the AppleTV connects to my router wirelessly, though for the first big sync I had them both on ethernet.)
Anyhow, I don't know if this is happening in the router, or in the AppleTV, but the solution was ... to change my laptop's name in sharing preferences.
This also changes the bonjour name, and that somehow was confusing either the router or the AppleTV since I guess two LAN IP addresses had the same bonjour name.
I suppose it might also work to force the router to give the same IP address to me whether I'm connected to the router via ethernet or airport. I'm not sure. All I know is, I changed the computer name and now I can ping the appletv when the ibook is connected to the router wirelessly, and the AppleTV appears in the Devices list in iTunes when the iBook is connected via wireless so... I'm happy.

Yeah ,this only worked temporarily. I don't know what's going on with my router and my AppleTV but it's proving impossible to reliably sync to the AppleTV when both the AppleTV and my iBook (the syncing computer) are connected to my router wirelessly. Sometimes, fiddling with the router fixes it, sometimes rebooting the AppleTV fixes it, but invariably, the time comes when I can ping and see the AppleTV from my desktop (connected to the router via ethernet) and not from the iBook (connected wirelessly)

  • Wireless Vs. Ethernet and iTunes "Devices" list

iTunes 9.0.2 and TV 3.0 software. Snow Leopard OS.
TV can "see" the Internet, download files, view YouTube, etc.
iTunes can "see" the Internet and works as expected. But the "Devices" list doesn't appear when I use the wireless connection.
When connected via ethernet the Devices list shows the TV and I am able to move files back and forth. The iTunes preferences shows the TV and I can change the "synching" options.
As soon as I switch to wireless the iTunes preferences show the TV and "Synching" but nothing is being transferred (no network activity).
Wireless via Belkin router using WEP 128. Ethernet using the same Belkin router.

I'm very methodical with my diagnostics and don't do "willy-nilly" steps to try and fix issues.
My "Source" files are stored on a connected HD (Firewire) and iTunes knows how to find them.
I've "rebuilt" my iTunes Library by following the steps at the Apple Support pages (move the .xml file out, deleted older (obsolete) folders and "import" the .xml file again).
TV has been connected via wireless for over two years without issue. Since I've only been downloading "rented" files I rarely open iTunes and just recently (with the 3.0 and 9.0.2 updates) noticed the TV didn't appear in the iTunes "Devices" list (under the Library).
I purchased a new file via TV and it downloaded and was viewed without issue on the TV. It was then I decided to test the new features with iTunes and noticed the file was never "moved" to my Library.
iTunes preferences suggest my TV was "synching" but I observed no network activity on the Belkin router.
This is where I started all of the "fixes" I could think of:
Use the Menu-minus buttons on the remote to "Test" the TV. No issues were reported.
Used the "Reset Settings" (Settings menu). No change. Then the "Factory Restore" (which deleted everything but my most recent purchase).
It was then I decided to test the ethernet connection and everything worked as expected. I was able to move my recent purchase to my iTunes Library and then move all of my other Library files (Music, Photos and purchases) back to the TV.
Switched back to my wireless network and both devices work as intended. But the TV doesn't show in the iTunes Library (Devices). iTunes preferences show the name of the TV and "Synching".
    I'm stuck at this point.

  • If I help out a friend & download a free app (through my iTunes account) on their new iPod Touch, will their device automatically be added to my itunes device list (and they can see all my contacts, pix, music etc)?

If I help out a friend & download a free app (through my iTunes account) on their new iPod Touch, will their device automatically be added to my itunes device list (and they can see all my contacts, pix, music etc)?

Just wondering, what context is this in?
First up, is your iTunes account part of an iCloud account?
Secondly, if it's a free app, why don't they just download it? If they are having trouble finding it on the App Store, but you can find it easily, you can share the link for it via email with them, and if they view that email on their iPod they can just tap the link and it will open the App Store to that App for them, so they can download it themselves.
If you were to go to the Store settings pane and sign in with your iTunes account, that should only provide the possibility for download items from your iTunes account, such as purchased apps, music and movies. However, if you signed in, downloaded the app, and then went back and signed out of the account again, there shouldn't be any access apart from the app you downloaded. This is provided you sign in using the Store section of the Settings app, not the iCloud section.
One problem they will have if you download this in your account instead of theirs, in order to download updates for that app, they will need you to enter your iTunes password to download the updates. Doing that doesn't give them access to anythign to do with your account other than that update, but they will be unable to receive updates for it without your password. They would also likely be unable to sync the app onto their computer, as their computer would not be Authorised with your iTunes account.
If you can answer some of the questions I've asked, I may be able to suggest alternate ways for you get them the app on their device.
Hope this all helps a bit

  • Event ID 4 while attempting to access Mobile Devices list in ECP/OWA

    Hi Community!
We just recently setup an Exchange 2013 (CU6) environment migrating away from Exchange 2010.  Our 2013 environment has 1 Mailbox server and 1 Client Access Server.  Everything appears to be functioning correctly between 2010 & 2013, except
when attempting to access the Mobile Device list from a user account within Exchange Admin Center in 2013.  We receive an error 400 Outlook Web App Options and Event ID 4 on the Mailbox Server.
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this issue.

  • My iPod won't sync with iTunes, shows in the source pane but can't highlight it

Given an older iPod and downloaded songs last year, now iTunes won't recognize it. It shows in the source pane giving me the option to transfer purchased songs but won't allow me to pick sync. iTunes is version 11.0 while iPod is version 1.3 but I don't know how to update the iPod if iTunes won't recognize it.

    Hi Truxtun,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this issue.

If the iPod has not been synced to the Dell computer before, you will most likely have to transfer the purchases to the computer and restore the iPod.

  • I don't see acess to a "Source Pane"

Just bought my first iPod yesterday. Every instruction I read in the support mentions a source pane. I've never seen anything that looks like what they describe. I've been able to drag content from my playlist into my iPod, but now I want to rearrange the order in the iPod. I can't do this because it says I have to have access to the source pane. Why am I not seeing this?

The Source pane is the narrow pane on the left of the iTunes window. If you're able to drag things to your iPod, you're seeing it. The iPod shows up under the heading Devices, right?
The problem might be that you need to click on the little expansion triangle to the left of the iPod's name. Then you'll see everything on the iPod.
    Best of luck.

  • I have an old ipod shuffle and I cannot get it to sync because it does not show up in my devices list...? HELP!!!

I cannot get my old ipod shuffle to sync because it does not show up in my devices list!!! I have tried letting it die and then plugging it in and still no success!! HELP!!!

To sync via wifi you first have to connect to computer via USB and check the box in the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes that sync via wifi.
Note you can only sync with one computer. If you change syncing computers you have to restore the iPod on the second computer.

  • TS4006 what controls devices appearing on Device list?

I have only three devices associated with Find My iPhone, far less than 100. All three were showing up shortly after two of them were stolen. Now, only two are showing up; one is in my possession, the other is missing. Will the missing device show up on the device list next time it connects to the Internet? Why would it drop from the list in the first place?
    Thanks!

Go to your iTunes menu > Preferences.  In the Devices pane, click "Forget All Remotes".

SIgn in with your Apple ID, the same one you used to access this support forum.
Hopefully, you will see a list of all the devices you registered with your Apple ID, including their serial numbers. Let me know how this works out.
Edit to add: If you enabled "find my imac" on your Pro, you ought to be able to remotely lock it, or even wipe its memory. Click http://www.icloud.com/ sign in with your Apple ID and click the big green "find my iPhone" icon (nevermind the name, it will find all your devices provided they're running Lion or iOS 5).
Then file a police report and nail the b*****d.

  • Apple TV doesn't show up in my iTunes devices list

Hey, I tried to post this question an hour ago but apparently my crappy 2.16 GHz intel 2 core duo iMac with 3 GB, 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM can't handle anything else while it is pointing out in iMovie '09 that none of my HD video is stable enough to take advantage of the stabilization feature.
Anyway, here's my second attempt at seeking assistance for the most pressing of the many complications I am faced with as a Mac user.
I can no longer see my Apple TV in the list of devices in iTunes on my iMac. This happened after I downloaded the most recent software update for my Apple TV, and after my step-father-in-law hooked me up with a home entertainment system. I have noted below with "CHECK!" the tasks I have performed in my attempts to maintain a love affair with Apple:
Verify that you have the latest version of iTunes installed. CHECK!
Verify that you have the latest version of Apple TV software installed. CHECK!
Verify Apple TV is powered and properly connected to your television and you can navigate the Apple TV interface. CHECK!
Verify Apple TV is properly connected to your network and the network is properly configured. When configuring Apple TV, if you do not see your wireless network, exit the selection screen by pressing the Menu button then go back in and the software will rescan. DUMB THIS ONE DOWN, APPLE. HOW DO I VERIFY APPLE TV IS PROPERLY CONNECTED TO MY NETWORK? WHY NOT SAY, "CHECK THAT APPLE TV SHOWS UP IN THE iTUNES DEVICES LIST" AS A TROUBLESHOOTING OPTION WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THAT THEIR PROBLEM IS THAT THEIR APPLE TV DOESN'T SHOW UP IN THEIR iTUNES DEVICES LIST". THAT'D BE HELPFUL.
Verify network connectivity on Apple TV by playing a movie trailer in Movies > Trailers. CHECK (BUT *** IS THAT "BIG MAN JAPAN" MOVIE TRAILER ABOUT?)
Verify that the computer you are using can access the iTunes Store. CHECK!
If you're using Apple TV in a school or office environment, make sure Apple TV is on the same network segment as your computer (check with your network administrator) or else iTunes won't see Apple TV. NOT APPLICABLE
For more information on how to properly set up your Apple TV, see the Apple TV Users Guide. UH, I BOUGHT THIS THING 1.5 YEARS AGO. DO I NEED TO REALLY GO BACK TO THAT?
Restart iTunes (Quit or Exit and then reopen iTunes). CHECK!
Reconnect Apple TV to iTunes OH THANKS. THIS IS GOOD ADVICE. *** DO YOU MEAN BY RECONNECT APPLE TV TO iTunes?
If that doesn't address the issue, then:
    Reset HOW?
    Restart your computer. CHECK!
Rejoin network (wireless) and/or Restart your network router ***? HOW? WHERE TO I CLICK?
Reinstall iTunes OH SNAP! I'LL DO THAT IF NOBODY HAS ANY BETTER ADVICE.
If you have Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), click here for information on configuring Firewall. SHOOTSKIE, I WILL NEED TO GO BACK TO THE WEBSITE TO CLICK THAT LINK.
For Mac OS X 10.4 and earlier, make sure UDP port 5353 (Bonjour) is open on your firewall. If you use Windows Firewall, follow the steps here. SHOOTSKIE, AGAIN, NEED TO GO TO WEBSITE TO CLICK LINK, BUT I AM HOOKED UP THROUGH A WIRED CONNECTION DO I STILL NEED THIS STUPID PORT STUFF?
Otherwise, if you use other firewall software or hardware, check the software documentation on how to open UDP port 5353. IT IS SO COMPLETELY, RIDICULOUSLY LAME THAT "OPEN UP UDP PORT 5353" EVEN NEEDS TO BE PART OF THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR GETTING MUSIC FROM YOUR COMPUTER ONTO YOUR TV."
If you use Windows, try disabling services and startup items that may be conflicting. UHH, WHY WOULD I EVER HAVE WINDOWS? I SPEND 10-12 HOURS A DAY ON WINDOWS AT WORK, CRASHING MAYBE ONCE EVERY FEW WEEKS. I SPEND 30-60 MINS A DAY ON MY iMAC, CRASHING 1-2 TIMES A DAY. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, WINDOWS ***** TOO. TECHNOLOGY *****. PERIOD.

Hi everyone. I am typing here on my brand new 24-inch iMac. So far it's great! However, the issue I had with the Apple TV is unrelated to the iMac itself, and I wanted to let everyone know what the solution was to my Apple TV issue.
Until early this Sunday morning when I discovered this solution, my iMac would not sync with the Apple TV. This problem began after the most recent Apple TV software update. I neglected to mention in my previous posts that my Apple TV was connected to the Internet via an Ethernet connection.
Prior to the most recent software update, I believe that my Apple TV communicated wirelessly with my iMac and via an Ethernet connection to the iTunes store. With the latest Apple TV update, the sync between the iMac and the Apple TV does not work if the Apple TV is connected to the Ethernet. My solution was as follows:
    1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Apple TV. Do not reconnect.
    2. Restore Apple TV to the factory settings. I'm not in front of my Apple TV at the moment but navigating through the Apple TV menu to reset the settings was fairly straightforward for me.
    3. After resetting the factory settings and following the instructions, I was able to see the Apple TV in my computer's iTunes, but I was stuck with the super old software version from summer '07 when I bought this thing (i.e. before you could rent movies or watch anything in HD on the Apple TV).
    4. Look for the software update on the Apple TV (again, fairly intuitive by navigating the menu on your TV) and download/install the latest update.
    5. If your problem was due to having your Apple TV connected to the Ethernet, I think this should do the trick! It should now show up on your computer's iMac and it should automatically start syncing your iTunes content although I did have to direct it to sync my photos.
p.s. Does anyone know how I can let Apple know that this issue exists with the latest Apple TV update? The guys at the Genius Bar at the mall I went to in Pleasanton, CA couldn't find any notes in their knowledge database about issues with the latest Apple TV software update and I think it's important that Apple knows about this.
p.s.s. I think Apple should make all of us, their consumers, more aware of how to let Apple know about these issues because this issue was so frustrating and throughout the whole troubleshooting process I felt very helpless and would have felt so much more positive about Apple if I just had a forum in which I could let Apple know I was having this issue (above and beyond this user forum through which I ended up losing much of my iTunes album artwork after following one person’s advice).
So if that forum exists, please let me know and let's brainstorm as to how to get more people like me to be aware of that forum so other people don't experience the same frustrations I have experienced.
p.s.s.s. I haven't tried reconnecting my Apple TV to the Ethernet in my home. While it will probably be slower to rent and download movies wirelessly, I don't care that much as I'm thinking I will start renting movies through Netflix instead and just use the Apple TV to watch my homemade videos on my TV.
But I am curious, why does Apple charge so frickin' much to rent a movie on the Apple TV? $4.99 for an HD movie? Everyone who has NetFlix tells me it is sooooo much cheaper and very easy to use. And to be honest, this makes me mad. Not that there is a cheaper option for renting movies/TV shows. That makes me happy. What makes me mad is that Apple charges so much to rent a movie when it doesn’t benefit them and it doesn’t benefit me. I think Apple does a lot of good things, but I think being able to rent (or even better, to subscribe to) media that you can watch (almost) instantaneously in your home is the wave of the future and still relatively new. If Apple wants to make money off of this service in the long term, they need to start by offering movies for super cheap, even taking a loss off the price they pay the production companies if they have to, because right now it's still all about adoption (i.e. getting as many people as Apple possibly can to think about renting a movie or *please please* a TV show through Apple ).
So I guess I feel like it's a lose-lose for Apple and me. Through Apple, to rent a movie (or *please please* a TV show) I will pay much more than I would with Netflix. But if Apple can walk away with an untarnished reputation after creating a special headphone input into their original iPhone device to make extra money out of nothing, then maybe they can do no wrong and we just need to keep blindly giving them our moolah? Can somebody please let me know how I could get a better job or at least a raise so that I can give Apple all of the money they are trying to squeeze out of me?
p.s.s.s.s. I am soooo sorry Apple, but the other day when I was at your store looking for the Firewire adaptor I needed to transfer files from my Firewire 400 on my old iMac to my new iMac via the Firewire 800 adaptor, I just couldn’t stomach the huge markup. I imagine you guys make a ton of money by ridiculously marking up your accessories over what one could pay elsewhere.
I know the rest of your consumers are happy to pay $50 for buying the cable in your store and I would like to apologize right now for using your in-store computers to search for the alternative pricing which I found for $19.99. I don’t believe any of your other customers saw me doing this, but if they did, please accept my sincere apologies. In the current economic environment, reputation is everything and it would be unfortunate for all of us if the Apple masses felt they were being taken advantage of.
Wow, I think I’ve got some issues with Apple that I need to work out. Anyone know a good therapist?

  • When I bootup the icon for Elements shows up in orange.  It changes to green only when I've gone to Finder and clicked on Elelments under the Devices list.  This is a recent development.  The icon used to be green upon bootup.  Does anyone know why ?

    I'm sorry to hear that.
I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago.  I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all.  I can go weeks between syncs.
Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist.  Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff).  Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for.  It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do.
