No Extensions folder in library?! No kext files?

Hi
Anyone know why i can't see/find an extensions folder on my system? 10.4.6, dual core 2.0, kept my system pretty clean... i did a custom install of tiger.
There's only ONE kext file on my system, and that's something to do with Roxio Toast.
Anyone know what's going on?
I need to delete a kext file off my system asap.
Thanks
Edd

Hi Beatsmith,
not sure why it didn't come up in spotlight though, must be as it's a admin folder
Unfortunately that's a feature, not an error. Spotlight does not search the folders Library or System. I quit using Spotlight 1 week after I installed and use FileBuddy instead.
TIP: do not change/move/delete anything in /Library and /System unless you know EXACTLY what you do This might render your system unfunctional.

Use CTRL+B to put the top menu bar back on screen. Add File to Library and Add Folder to Library are both under File.

  • Customizing icons in sys folder extension folder IO...kext pkg issues

I currently run a mbp 17" early 2011. For years of OS iterations including Lion 10.7.3 I've customized my icons throughout the system folder, including the extensions folder. Till now. I don't know if the issue is recent firmware /smc update related. I do know that my system does not like the customizations to icons as basic as "CD-R.icns" and all the rest of the IO function sets in the kext packages. I lose all functionality of Superdrive, Firewire, USB, etc.. Changing the internal HD icon creates a loss of Finder. Ouch! I had to use a TimeMachine backup off a jump drive to restore/fix it. The names of the .icns swaps are exact. Odd... What's up? Thanks in advance, William

Just about everything these days is codesigned; modifying a codesigned component it in any way will make it inoperative (changing the icon adds a custom icon file).  You should not be messing with anything in the /System folder.

  • Error when adding folder to library - Not adding files to ITunes library

Hey all, I just got my iPod for Christmas and I've been having a lot of problems with iTunes. Sometimes when I'd add a folder it'd add all the files 3 or 4 times, and now I'm having an even bigger problem. I was trying to get all my music in one place to finally have some organization on my comp, so I set it to copy files I added, then I figured I'd delete the old folder. I have a folder that, when I try to add it, it gives me the error "Attempting to copy to the disk "C:\" failed. The file name was invalid or too long."
It continues to go through the folder (Another few hundred songs, or almost 600 depending on if I did the top level folder) and it LOOKS like they're being added to iTunes, but they never get added to the library. If I try to update my iPod after this, the program takes all the music off my iPod. If I close and reopen, then it will update music, but NO files are added to the library. I can see that the files are being copied, and, as such, I'm not running out of disk space. These files are in there two or three times in some cases.
So, I have two questions. Does anyone know what causes this error, and does anyone know an efficient way I can delete all the "non-detected" files?

You'll probably have better luck asking the question here -> Windows EightForums
iTunes isn't designed to work with Windows 8 or any beta software, so theres no suprise that it isn't working as expected.

  • Kext file error messages

Concerned about ever diminishing hard disk space I did a custom re-install of OSX 10:3:9 leaving out extra language files and developer package which I did not think I would ever need to use. Everything runs ok except two applications, Norton AntiVirus and TASCAM US122 software (A to D converter for audio recording via USB).
Each time I start up the i-book I get the following three alert boxes:
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext“ was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/SymEvent.kext“ was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/ktum.kext“ was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
Can someone please explain what this means?
Can this be fixed without re-installing the OS?
I did a search on the apple downloads pages but found no mention of these files being upgraded or availabe for download
Along with these alerts comes one that tells me Norton AV cannot load and must be re-installed.
reading these discussion pages I found a comment sugestiing Norton AV is no longer highly regarded by Apple engineeers, so I tried to remove it using SringClean, (more on this anon)
Have I wasted my money on these applications:
    1. Norton AV, - As far as I am aware Norton AV has never found even a hint of a virus on my system, Do I really need it?
    2. Alladin Spring Clean - I have tried to un-install Norton AV as well as several other applications with this software but it did not seem to do anything, so I had to move files manually to the trash.
Any comments on this would be most welcome.
Appologies for a multi faceted question, but I have put them all in a single posting in case they are all related to one cause.

You are correct. There are no known viruses affecting Macs and haven't been for a long time - since OS X at least. Personally, I see little use for anti-virus utilities, but there are valid concerns. But they are less a problem for Macs than a problem of passing on PC viruses to other PC users via email. ClamXAV is an excellent open source (free) anti-virus utility that seems to do as good a job as commercial products and does far less damage to OS X. I would also suggest you visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on virus protection and spyware.
    Questions:
    1. How can I remove unwanted kext files safely?
Navigate to the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Locate the .kext file you wish to delete. Select it and either right-click or CTRL-click and select Move to Trash from the contextual menu. You will be asked to authenticate by entering your admin password.
    2. Could Hard disk irregularities cause the two applications mentioned above to fail to work?
Yes, depending upon whether the cause was due to incorrect permissions or directory errors. However, disk repair utilities can't do much about actual file corruption which can be caused by drive errors.
    3. If not, are these software companies distributing faulty software?
It's always a possibility, but commercial software companies have nothing to gain by delivering faulty software. More often the problems are due to faulty systems, improper installations, and user error. Sometimes the problems can arise from incidental problems such as a power glitch when saving a file.
    4. If OSX is virus proof (as your answer and other comments I have seen on the forum imply) why does Apple not mention this when advertising their operating system? Would this be sticking the neck out too much?
No operating system is virus proof. Apple does advertise how much less troublesome Macs are supposed to be compared to PCs. I've never claimed OS X is virus proof. What I and most others say is that so far there are no viruses affecting OS X that are actively extant. You won't find very many viruses affecting any operating system other than Windows because 95 percent of computers use Windows while the other 5 percent use everything else. Software hackers are far more likely to get attention attacking the 95 percent than the 5 percent. It's a matter of numbers, not the operating systems.
    5. These disk errors and faulty permissions, how do they get there? Should I check for them regularly?
Faulty permissions occur when proprietary installers are used that are not written properly and cause errors in permissions. They can also occur if the user installs files but does not check that the files carry the correct permissions for where they are located. For example, applications stored in the Applications folder should carry specific privileges. However, if you download a program and install it by simply dragging it into your Applications folder, the permissions attached by default will not be the correct permissions. Unfortunately, repairing permissions will not fix this type of problem. Disk Utility repairs permissions based on an examination of default permissions contained in a receipt file that is installed when the software is installed. All Apple software installs these receipts during installation. However, unless the software developer provides the receipt and saves it in the receipts folder then Disk Utility will not repair permissions associated with that program.
Under most circumstances there is little need to repair permissions. However, it's a good idea to repair permissions before installing new system software updates and then again after installation. When installing third-party software that uses a proprietary installer it's a good idea to repair permissions after the installation.
Disk corruption is another matter, and it's a good idea to periodically repair the hard drive. Also, read the following FAQ:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior. DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. However, DW is not yet compatible with Intel Macs. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. SuperDuper (Commercial)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
    7. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary)
    8. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Can someone steal my info from the extensions folder?

Some kid is asking me to copy my extensions folder to fix some corrupt files he has.
We are both running 10.7.2. I just don't want to be giving out important information here such as logins, keychains, cc info, etc.
    Any info would be appreciated.

I've never scanned that folder for what it contains, but I doubt it would have anything personal.
However, unless your Macs are identical, they may not work on his Mac. Tony's advice is the most correct.
It won't take long (on a reasonable internet connection) and it won't affect any other files on his computer.
Unless he knows he personnally corrupted those files, he is likely chasing his tail. It would be very difficult for those files to become corrupt on their own as they are not rewritten to disk.

  • Why no Extensions folder or files?

So I was going to try the whine fix on this forum where you edit a file in your Extension folder. Problem is there is no Extension folder in my Library and when I do a search for the folder there are no files in the folder.
    Anyone?

    Managed to delete Bonjour64.msi
How did you do that, Arkir? Did you use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to clear the BonJour installation configuration information? Or did you use some other process?

    Hello there, gleab.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews the ways to import content into iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Also keep in mind which formats can be added:
You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library

is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library ?

As I understand it Robo doesn't really 'do' third-party
source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
    to think again.
    Cheers!

  • Which files can I safely delete in my Pictures Folder/ iPhoto Library

    Hello
Thanks in advance for any advice on the following. I am trying to free up some space on my Macbook Pro hard drive. In the Pictures/ iPhoto Library folder, I seem to have a lot of duplicates. At this folder level, I have series of sub folders with years 2002-2006 listed, and there is also a folder titled data, which also has subfolders 2002-2006. Can I safely delete one set of folders without losing my pictures?
    Thank you
    Jonathan

    Johnathan:
In a word, NONE. Those are all necessary item for the operation of the library. Those files in the Originals folder are obviously the originals. Those in the Data folder are the thumbnails iPhoto uses to display in the main library window. The Modified files are those that you've editied, rotated, etc. To do any moving, renaming or editing of files directly from the folder is tantamount to committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
What with the low cost of external FW HDs, they are a very cost effective way to protect and preserve important files. As you may know it's recommended to have a minimum of 10G free space for optimum performance of the system and applications. More if possible. You can use Monolingual to remove any language module you don't need (be sure not to select English or American English and DO NOT run any of the Architecture items). I saved nearly 900MB the first time I ran it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I install a Thunderbird add-on for all users? Putting the XPI file into Extensions folder didn't work.

I'm trying to install Enigmail 1.8.2 for all users. I thought I read somewhere that you don't need to unpack the XPI file.
Whilst writing this, I did some experimenting and found a solution, but it's messy (see below). Is there an easier way?
Fresh install of Thunderbird 31.6 on Windows 7 x64. Have observed the following:
    1. If I install the extension for one user via the Add-Ons GUI (from the marketplace, not from a local file), it does work. The Appdata\Roaming\Mozilla\Extensions folder is empty. Folder {847b3a00-7ab1-11d4-8f02-006008948af5} is created in Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\staged\ and moved from staged to extensions when TB is restarted.
    2. If I download the XPI file from Enigmail site and copy it to Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\Extensions folder, then Thunderbird's Extensions screen says "You don't have any add-ons of this type installed".
3a. If I rename the xpi to zip (e.g. enigmail-1.8.2-tb+sm.xpi.zip) then I can open it and see that the contents are similar to what was created at point (1). If I unzip the contents, then Thunderbird doesn't recognise the add-on, unless I rename the folder to the GUID above (which could be found in install.rdf or chrome.manifest, once you know what you're looking for).
Presumably I could also have done a per-user install, copied the folder from the profile, removed the extension, then pasted the copy into the program folder. That would save looking up the GUID but is only a little less fiddly.
3b. After renaming the folder and restarting TB, it gives me a new tab "Install Add-on" which says "Another program on your computer would like to modify Thunderbird with the following add-on: ... Location: C:\Program Files (x86)". Once I allow the add-on, it is listed in Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions.ini.
Aside: Disabling the add-on simply removes the line from extensions.ini, so how does TB distinguish between an unapproved add-on and a disabled one? It seems to be in extensions.json.

Is Thunderbird already installed in the computers? If so, you could download the .xpi file and drag and drop it into the extensions window (after opening that) to install it in all the computers, following which you click the Install buttons when they become enabled, and you might have to restart Tbird afterwards.

    Hi,
I am Working on a panel for Adobe Premiere pro CC, Now we got a panel set up which will install all the related folders and files which are part of the Extension content folder in the
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files \Adobe\CEPServiceManager4\extensions \Panel\CONFIG folder. But we need to change this location to C:\Users\USER\APPDATA folder or any other user specified folder during installation itself.
Is there any way to do this from extension builder?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Anoop NR

    Thanks guys,
    Got it !! Hybrid extensions.
I am using Adobe Extension builder 3 in Eclipse to code and create the zxp for Premiere pro panel.
Seeing the hybrid extension part in  HTML Panels Tips: #10 Packaging / ZXP Installers | Photoshop, etc. I have added a hybrid extension panel using the bundle manifest editor in the extension builder. it creates an mxi file automatically with all the properties, I have to change the maximum host version number in the mxi file in order to make the extension work in the Premiere pro CC 2014. Using the Hybrid option in the Bundle manifest editor we can choose a set of folder paths for placing the files during installation itself and later can be used using 'csInterface.getSystemPath(SystemPath.CODE)' from javascript functions to modify them.
    Thanks for your relpies,

  • IPhone photo/video library glitch - wrong file extensions, name shift, lost files etc [LONG story - sorry]

I have a 5s running 7.0.4. and my computer is running Windows 8.1.
We had a baby and my phone filled up fast with pictures and videos, so I decided to offload them onto my PC. I connected my phone to the usb port, and directly copied from the DCIM folder to my hard drive.
Something happened during the first attempt, and the process was interrupted. So I went into each of the sub folders, and selected all files, and started the copy process again. I told the computer to skip any existing files.
So all the file counts matched in each folder, and I figured it was safe to start deleting from my iPhone.
On my hard drive, I separated all the MOV files into my Videos folder. But in Windows Explorer, the thumbnail view showed several MOV files with no thumbnail - just the generic icon.
As I sorted my photos into various folders, I also noticed a lot of generic icons instead of thumbnails for the JPGs. I started to feel concerned that my files had become corrupt during the transfer. But then I noticed a PNG file that was a few hundred megabytes. This was odd, so I added the MOV extension to it. Sure enough, it was a video with the wrong extension.
I renamed every PNG and JPG file that had no thumbnail to add the MOV extension. Every one was a video with the wrong file extension.
Then I went to the video folder, and all the MOV files that had the generic icon were actually JPG files.
Well I was just happy to see that the files were not corrupt.
One more time before I deleted things from my iPhone, I did a spot check to see that the largest videos were on my hard drive. I found a few videos that were not copied over, despite the file counts having been accurate. So I copied the videos again, and compared file sizes and date/times when there was an overwrite prompt. Most were matches, but several were the same file name with different sizes and dates.
I didn't know what was going on, but I just wanted to get the files on my computer. So I renamed my local copy where there was a name collision, and copied the videos. I deleted the videos from my phone as I went along.
I felt pretty confident that I had all the files copied now, so I began mass deleting my photos.
I went to the Photos app on the phone, and watched the thousands of pictures disappear, and the glorious free space grow on my phone.
But wait... there was still 1 video in the Photos app. I thought I had gotten all the MOV files off the phone...
I have a photo info app installed, so I was able to see the file name of the video. I searched for that file name in the DCIM subfolders, but the folder that had that series of files (the IMG_3000-3999 files) listed the files with that particular video skipped. It was clearly still on my phone, because I could play it.
Then I noticed it was a 45 minute long video of my baby. About 5 GB. So I figured it must be due to the file size that it wasn't visible from explorer. (Can't explain why that would be, but M$ keeps changing crap too. I never freaking know what to expect from them either.)
After having deleted all the jpg, png and mov files from the DCIM folder, there were still about 26 files in my camera roll on the iPhone. And I could still view the video.
I decided I wasn't concerned about the photos, I just wanted to figure out how to get the video onto my computer.
So I selected all the photos in the photo app (skipping the 1 remaining video) and tapped the trash can.
Poof! One item remained, and it was one of the garbage photos. My video is GONE! ^#@*&#($^@Q&%( And no, I didn't fat-finger it. I was very careful to select the correct thumbnails.
Looking back, I know that I should have just started the entire file copy process from scratch when funny stuff started happening like mismatched file names. But I am a sleep-deprived new mom and just wasn't thinking clearly. It would be nice if I could have used my file/directory compare program to check the iPhone against my laptop, but it is not compatible with devices, only removable drives.
And no, I don't use iTunes. I stopped using iTunes years ago when it would randomly decide to delete contacts from my phone just because they didn't exist on my computer or some sh-- like that. I have always just manually synced all my stuff and have never had an issue like this. To say I am sad to lose that video is an understatement.
I googled "iPhone undelete" and "iPhone data recovery" and downloaded a trial for one of the likely candidates. It turned up a bunch of garbage, but not my video.
Anyways... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of scenario? Has anybody identified what could cause this to happen? I would like to avoid this in the future. (I will avoid this type of loss, because I know now what I could have done differently to be more careful. But it would be nice if I didn't have to get all neurotic about checking 60GB of photos/videos side by side each time I copy them to my computer...)
I have seen other threads on the forum here regarding corrupted libraries and such, but I am not sure this is the same thing.
One suspicion I have is that it might have to do with the iPhoto app being installed on the phone. I can't articulate why I think that is worth considering. But when I looked at my Video folder, I ended up with many duplicate videos, and all the duplicated videos' file names were 2 numbers apart. As if all the file names got shifted at some point. Very strange.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If anybody has an idea, I am interested. If anybody else has lost precious memories due to this, we should talk. If it is a widespread problem, maybe we can all get together and pound down Apple's door?
As an aside: Why am I unable to select Apple Support Community to post this question to?

In my case number of weird things happen whenever I try to copy pictures/videos from my iPhone from direct USB...
    1. JPG files are wrongly named as MOV and vice versa.
    2. I copy only folders but in addition files with no extension are copied in the main folder, very strange.
    3. Whenever I open one of the folders, strange icons like this () start appearing which cannot be copied even.
Unfortunately I used to delete a lot of files with wrong extensions in the past because I never new they could be fixed.
    Apple should answer this!
Note: I am using Windows 8.1 and use a direct USB cable without iTunes to copy the media files directly from My Computer.

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
