No iChat effects

I've got Leopard and iChat 4 but the effects bar doesn't show up in the Video iChat window.
Initially I thought I saw it but I'm not sure. The first time my brother called I didn't see it. I don't see it in preview either.

  • New ichat effects not working in photo booth?

I recently just downloaded the iChat Effects 2.0.4 for my new MBP and it works fine in ichat. But, when i try and take a picture using one of the effects in photo booth it comes out pink and white. does anyone know how to fix it??

    Hi,
Do you mean these http://ismileys.free.fr/moreichateffects/ ?
They have not really worked in Snow Leopard and should be deleted
There are also these http://ichatfx.com/iChatFX/Home.html which seem more stable.

how do i uninstall ichat effects? i just want the bug out ones. they show up on photobooth but not ichat

    HI,
    Do you mean MoreiChatEffects ?
This is "known" to have some issues as the Quartz files that are used are from and older version of Quartz Composer and some will not play in later versions of the OS.
This installs the Quartz files in the "wrong" place.
The Apple ones are in Hard Drive Name/System/Library/Compositions
Ones to be used by all Users should be place in Hard Drive Name/Library/Compositions
Ones for the User only should be put in Hard Drive name/Users/(Account name)/Library/Compositions.
The MoreiChatEffects ones get put in the System/Library/Compositions getting mixed up with the Apple ones.
There should be an "Uninstall" option if you re-run the Installer.
Support Messages on the Site list an issues trying to run in 64 bit mode but end in 2009
iChatFX is something similar  but expands on what Quartz can really do.
It takes what ChatFX did and updates it for later versions.
ChatFX (second of those two links) worked up until OS X 10.4.9  At OS X 10.4.10 Apple changed the way the video was produced for iChat (and PhotoBooth) which meant the access part of the Quartz files did not work.
iChatFX  (Note the leading "i") was produced by a different company.
The Demo does not have all the 200 options but does have many (with Demo written all over them).
However these also have been caught out by changes in the way Apple grabs the Video from the Camera.
iChatFX also puts files in the "Apple" System/Library/Compositions folder instead of the "All Users" /Library/Compositions folder.
    The Good News
IN the Hard Drive Name/System/Library/Compositions folder there is also a file called "DefaultOrder.plist" which can be opened on QuickLook and/or made to Open With TextEdit  and lists all the Apple ones that Should be in the folder.
The Mountain Lion ones are here  (TextEdit Copy)

  • IChat Effects with iMovie 08?

    Hi all.
Does anyone know if it's possible to utilize the new iChat effects that are available with 10.5 within iMovie 08? Does Apple Development have any plans to integrate these with the isight recording feature in iMovie '08?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
You can always take a recording with effects from Photo Booth and import it into imovie

  • No iChat Effects Available

I installed Leopard on both my G5 PowerMac as well as my daughter's iMac G5. She has no effects button on her iChat display window at all and "Show Video Effects" is grayed out of the video menu. I have the 2 pages of effects on my PowerMac. She does have the effects in PhotoBooth.
I understand about the missing or unusable background effects for non-intel computers but I haven't seen any posts about effects missing altogether.
I did try reinstalling iChat from the Leopard DVD, but it's still the same ... any ideas?

On my iMac I don't see ANY effects ... not even an effects button. It sounds like you see an effects button on your iMac, but only two pages of effects ... that's what I see on my tower. At this point I don't know if it was a bad install, something messed up in the preferences or what because people telling me that it's because the effects don't work on non-intel macs is simply not true. They work on my non-intel tower and they work in photobooth on my iMac and from the posts I've read, plenty of people with non-intel macs see the effects button and two pages of effects (which I think Apples refers to as "photobooth effects").
As to the 2 out of 4 pages ... nothing indicates the 4 pages on my tower (where I do see effects) I know about them through posts as well as the "Leopard Tour" quicktime movie.

  • Ichat Effects are no longer there ....

I have noticed that when I video chat with I Chat my effects tab is empty, but when I go to Photo Booth all my effects exist there. I was wondering how I can get the original I Chat effects back on my I Chat that came with my mac.
I have the new MacBook Pro 13" with OSX Lion

    Hi,
Go to the Finder and the Go Menu.
Hold the ALT key and select the Library that appears.
    Open the Caches  Folder.
Scroll down far enough to any lose items starting "QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iChat.cache"
    Certainly any that start QCCompositionRepository
Drag these to the Trash and restart the computer.

Photo Booth crashes when attempting to view these effects in the effects browser. Anybody else seeing this or know a fix?

I had a similar problem when I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard (and also upgraded to iLife 09). For me, the solution was to run iChat and Photo Booth in 32-bit mode instead of 64-bit mode.
To do this, go to the Applications folder, select the icon for iChat, go to the menu bar and select File->Get Info. (Alternatively use the shortcut ][-I or "right click" the icon). Check the box for "Open in 32 bit mode". Repeat for Photo Booth.
(note- I have also posted the above text to another thread in the iSight forum to improve the chances of it being found by others seeking a solution)

  • Any other ichat and photobooth effects ?

More iChat effects 2.01 ***** and messed up my computer so it cannot be that.
Is there any other effects you can add that either:
    A. Dont suck and mess up
               and
    B. Dont ruin my computer
I was just wondering if there were any different types of effects you can get, for photo booth and iChat. Thnx.

    Hi,
    For those running Tiger http://www.plumamazing.com/mac/chatfx
    For later versions http://ichatfx.com/iChatFX/Home.html
These all are in fact Quartz Files created in Quartz Composer which gets installed if you Install the Developer Tools  (on your Install Disk in Option Installs Folder (Expand the window)
Once you have Quartz Composer installed you can create your own.
You can Google for Quartz Composer files.
However as Quartz Composer can make Screen Savers and iTunes Visulizers you may have to dig a bit deeper on sites you find.

  • Sound effects not working with SoundSticks after upgrade to 10.4.4

After upgrading to 10.4.4, the sound effects of OS X, such as emptying trash, iChat effects, etc, doesn't come out from the SoundSticks (first generation, connected via USB), even though I've turned it (effects) to the highest level, and selected to have it come out of the SoundSticks.
The effects are fine if I select Built-in Audio as sound output.

The names are updated to the following (although the documentation doesn't reflect this):
    addDataSourceConnectionPool == createJDBCConnectionPool
    addManagedDataSource == createManagedDataSource
    addNativeDataSource == createNativeDataSource
    testDataSourceConnectionPool == testConnectionPool
    Hope it helps ...

  • Saving an iChat to Quicktime

Can I record a movie using iChat (so I can use the green-screen effect) and save it in Quicktime so I can then send it in an email?

    (forget my post above)
After trying to use a prerecorded iChat and using it as a backdrop to be saved and send as a mail attachment, I found this the easiest way (for me) to accomplish it:
-Start a video chat and select the recording feature from the "video" tab in the top menu of your screen, if your friend agrees to record a red light in your video window indicates the video chat is recorded.
-The recorded video chat will be saved in a playlist in iTunes named "iChat-chats" by default.
-If you drag the recorded file from iTunes to your desktop, it will be a video file that you can use as video backdrop in iChat effects. Just drag the movie into an empty user field for video backdrops in iChat effects. It will be saved in iTunes, when you're done recording, the same playlist mentioned above
-To mail the movie you can drag it from the
    iTunes playlist to the desktop
From the desktop to the Quicktime icon in the dock.
-Quicktime will open and by selecting "share" from the archive tab in the Quicktime top menu you'll have the option to compress it and mail it directly from Quicktime. The movie must be short in order to be saved as a (small) movie attachment that can be mailed.

  • Add webcam to iChat for background versatility

I have iMac 24" use iChat with family. All they see now is background behind me. I want to add webcam with USB cable so I can move around room to show different "things". Onew company told me "USB webcams in general DO NOT work with iChar, You would need to download a USB iChat patch online". I am looking at a Gearhead WC830i webcam. What do I need to do to make this wrk. Thanks for any help.

    For Clarity.
The Mac OS since OS 10.4.9 has included a USB Video Class (UVC) Driver.
USB Video Class cameras are USB 2.0 speed rated and are those that are marked UVC compliant or Vista Certified.
So You need a USB 2.0 port on your computer (some Keyboards are not USB 2.0 even when the computer is) and 10.4.9 or higher + a UVC camera.
    OR....
Other cameras are USB 1.1 and these will most likely work IF...
    1) You have Mac driver for it (See below for more)
    2) IT will need the iUSBCam Utility to get the resultant pic into iChat (effectively a DV Conversion)
The Ecamm page also links to A Camera Guide page with two tables in it.
These highlight some cameras (They are not Exhaustive lists) and which driver they need (Or come with).
In some cases they link to either macam or IOXperts who are two Generic Drivers that works across a range of cameras (Both list which cameras they work with) so even if the camera does not come with a specific Mac Driver, you may find it can be made to work.
It is fair to say that in both cases that the generic USB Drivers or the Mac UVC driver do not always (read as Never) give you the same range of option and features that a Windows drive does (No Pan and Tilt or Zoom).
At this stage I do not have any info on NON UVC Cameras that are USB 2.0 that may need drivers and if they will work with the iUSBCam utility (the chances are they will though)
Of course Old External iSights and other Firewire cameras such as CamCorders with DV output will work.

  • How can i use a digital camera as webcam?

the iSight camera *****. I have a 12mp canon digital camera, can i use that in lieu of iSight to use in iChat and Facetime?
if so, what's the procedure? i have a macbookpro on snowleopard 10.6.8

    Hi,
The External iSight camera has a 640 X 480 pixel picture as do the early internal ones.
Later versions of the iSight camera have 1.3mp resolutions and the latest are HD.
However iChat only sends a max size or 640 X 480 picture and that is dependent on your Processor and Internet Speed. (And to some extent that of your Buddies)
Using a Stills camera was a web cam can present some problems.
It is mainly about what input the computer accepts and what the camera has as output.
I have an older Kodak DC4800
In addition to the USB Output for transferring pics it has a RCA pin type socket that output TV signals which the camera software can change between NTSC and PAL.
I then used a DV Converter to input that over FireWire to the computer.
For iChat this had to be converted to DV as it only accepts DV or certain USB web cam formats that the Mac then converts for iChat (effectively it digitizes the pic).
My camera did not take Video it just had the Ability to output what the camera saw - basically you could use a TV as a super sized Viewfinder.
If the camera you have has FireWire and it can do video then you maybe in luck  (It will still depend if the Video format is DV (not mpeg, not HDV or any other format such as AVI)
If the Video it may do can be sent of USB that will need to be USB 2.0
Again the format will need to be the type that iChat uses (or the OS software converts).
For most Stills cameras this is impossible.
