No MPEG1 sound on my iMac G5

Help. For some reason my old clips that use MPEG1 Muxed (sound) now have NO sound. I have isolated it to this modem type as all other file formats, including windows formats play okay in QT.
Also, MS Word no longer beeps or makes other prompting type sounds.
Also, MovieMagic Screenwriter no longer produces any sound when saving, detecting spelling errors, etc.
which I mainly use for streaming radio staions, as most only support Realmedia or Windows streaming. Video is okay, just no sound. This also includes no sound when watching or listening to anything from Youtube.
I was running 10.4.8 from the software update and everything was fine. I downloaded Audacity this morning, opened it, did nothing with it and then closed it. Possibly the problems started at that point but I'm not sure. I have since downloaded and re-installed 10.4.8 using the combo 10.4.8 version according to the apple guidlelines, but there is no change.
Everything was working fine, and always has, now I suddenly have all of these problems with sound. Never had this before ever. Also downloaded the latest version of QT pro again, but no difference detected.
iTtunes works okay and so do all of the OSX alert sounds as well as my clock. Later QT movies that use the newer codecs also work okay.
Please, can anyone help? The problem is on my iMac G5, 20 in, 2GHz.
Thankyou.

Audacity is a program that has been known to change sound MIDI prefs and if it does that, the sounds on your Mac can disappear.
To fix it, simply open up Garage Band and play a sample loop. This will reset the prefs to the defaults and if that was the problem, your sound will return.
Apple has a KB article about it HERE.

  • No sound recording on IMAC from EDIROL FA-66

just bought an EDIROL FA-66(2934) . It plays back sound from the Imac perfect, but I cannot record any sound from sources connect to the EDIROL. In the sound preferences the EDIROL is slected in both output and input. On the input tab I even see the input level meter move when I play a sound from the sound source.
In the preference pane both input and output show EDIROL FA-66(2934) type: Firewire
    Besides GarageBand I also tried:
Audacity 1.3.12 : Preferences Host Core Audio (cannot be changed
    Playback: EDIROL FA-66(2934)
    Recording: EDIROL FA-66(2934) Channels 2(stereo)
Wiretap studio 1.1.0.(9697) Preferences; Source One: EDIROL FA-66(2934)
Source two: Mac Audio (does record internal sounds i.e.
    from internet)
Audio recorder 3.2.(322) Recording from EDIROL FA-66(2934)
But none of them does any recording. The input level meter in the sound preference pane showsthat sound is coming in.
Playing sounds through EDIROL is perfect.
    I have MAC OS X version 10.6.3
    27" IMAC 2,8 Ghz Intel core i7

Thx your questions helped me find the solution. In the input source was should EDIROL stereo 1/2, which I thought meant 2 channels, but it actually means the channels on the edirol. The drop down box also should channel 3/4 and that is where MD is connected. I works now.
    Thanks for your help

  • Recording sound on an iMac/toilet seat

I need to record some live sound onto my iMac model M6411 (graphite toilet seat). I bought a Griffin iMic and have a wireless mic that will work with the iMic and be plugged into the USB port of the iMac. Can anyone suggest an application to use to record with? I will be using the iMac-recorded audio to overdub video that I'm shooting at the same time (along with audio that's being recorded directly into the camcorder).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Don,
Unfortunately, I DO have it. I'll probably use Audicity, though, unless I can find something better before Sunday.

Hi , I suhail khan from india and i am user of iMac system 10,1.These days i am facing the sound enabling issue with my iMac system I am not able to hear sound in my iMac system. So kindly suggest me how to enable sound in my iMac . Please no the needful.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. If you've recently plugged anything into the audio-out (headphone) port, plug and unplug it a couple of times.
    2. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sound ▹ Output
Check the settings. The internal speakers should be selected as the output device, the Mute box should not be checked, and the volume slider should be at least halfway to the right.
    3. Look inside the headphone port. If a red light is coming from the port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a headphone mini-stereo jack of the proper size.Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    4. Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. It will take much longer than usual. You don't have to log in; just reboot as usual (without holding any keys) when the login screen appears. (Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.)
    5. Reset the NVRAM.
    6. Reset the SMC.
    7. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data as a precaution. You won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.
    8. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • 5.1 surround sound on my iMac

What's the best way to get 5.1 surround sound on my iMac 2011?

It depends upon what you wish to do with the 5.1.  Most output related uses require 3rd party software as there is no native support for 5.1 in OS X.
A Google search will find you a lot of info on the subject.  Searching these communities will also find a lot of useful info.

  • What is that loud 'tok, tok, tok "sound in my iMac?

What is that loud 'tok, tok, tok "sound in my imac? It will sound when the computer boots, and sometimes when the machine is turned on. Should be sent directly for warranty service?

This could be the internal Hard Drive being a bit loud when it starts up or it could indicate a potential hard drive error.
If you check the S.M.A.R.T status of your drive in Disk Utility it should give some indication (but not always).
If the system works fine it's probably nothing to worry about, but you should probably speak to Apple Tech Support or make an appointment with an Apple Genius at your local Apple Retail Store just to be on the safe side.
If you have an external drive available to you, make a back up of your system (so you don't loose anything) in case the drive does need replaced.

For some reason the sound on my Imac stopped. I checked all volume controls and they are up and still no sound. I have restarted the Imac and still nothing.
    Any suggestions?

Can happen occasionally for reasons unknown.
An SMC reset usuall cures it.

If a simple reboot doesn't fix it, try resetting the SMU.

I have no sound on my iMac.    When I select the sound keys on the upper row of my keyboard or select 'output devices' tab in System Preferences, it says "no output devices found".    Any idea where I am not looking to get sound back?

Thank you for your responses.    I found the 'sound' icon in the menu bar and found it was turned down low.   I adjusted the sound there and this worked; however, I'm not sure why this didn't show in my System Preferences or why I couldn't adjust the sound from the keyboard.    Those function keys basically became un-usable for me.   Thank you again!

  • How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

Did you try using 'mute' in the System Preferences> Sound> output>
control panel? This usually will mute the startup sound; you may have
to try a few things to be sure only the startup will mute, not all sounds.
Of course, you could likely write an apple script in automator or in
text edit, that could automatically mute before shutdown and then
in startup items, have the script un-mute the audio for everything.
There are possibilities that do not include the command line; but
if you learn how to use that, without messing up other functions,
then even more custom control is possible in Mac OS X.
With that, you could write a substitute 'sound file' with white noise
or nothing in there; so instead of Bong, it'd be as quiet as a mouse.
PS: You may have a local reason why the site link posted above
does not work for you, but it does function and if the product is
free to use, and does not include adware or malware, here is an
untested download link from their site. (I can go there, easily.)
    http://www.allvu.com/index.php/sndownloadpage.html
    and note:
    http://www.allvu.com/downloads/StartNinjaInstaller.dmg is the
actual DL link for this product. Mouse over the buttons to see it.
(The other downloads are highly suspect; even this one is to me)
There may be a reason in your Mac OS X 10.9.x for gatekeeper
to not allow odd download installations, there is a way around
that feature, but I do not recommend using unknown software.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I cannot hear sound through my iMac Headphone port,

I cannot hear sound through my iMac Headphone port, this is a very new computer. I can hear sound through the usb port of the device. How can this be fixed? Headphones are selected as an Output device.
Please help in any way possible, it is becoming quite a concern as it was just working a matter of hours ago.

usb does not carry audio at all it's a serial digital bus
things one connect to usb which play audio act the role of being usb audio cards only 1 audio card can be active at the time so if you connect an usb audio card the internal audio card is muted
this cause your headset to be muted
disconnect the usb audio card and you will be able to use your headset
if you wish to use a headset an an usb audio card at the same time the headset needs to be connected to the usb audio card

  • Strange sounds - mid 2010 iMac 27'' i7

    Hi all,
I have my new iMac for almost a month now and today I started hearing some strange sounds every 5 to 10 minutes. What I hear is something like a rat in the mac scratching its fingers on the aluminium:
chk---chk--chk-chk-chk-chk. It goes like this, one scratch - pause - second scratch - pause and finally four continuous scratches.
I have lowered the volume of the built-in mic and line in with no luck. When the sound is muted I don't get it so it's a sound coming from the speakers for sure.
    Any ideas?
    Regards

    Well,
