No readline-interface in SQL-Plus

There is still no readline-interface in SQL-Plus. SQL-Plus could be a great tool if it was a bit more userfriendly (like PostgreSQL ...).
Any comments?

you also need to modify the connection string, because you are no longer talking direct IP to the server, but you go through Oracle Client stuff (SQL*NET or whatever). to make it short you must be able to use TNSPING to ping to a TNS name, and the TNSNAME has to provided in the URL:
     String url = "jdbc:oracle:oci8:@TNSNAME";
     properties.setProperty("user", "x");
     properties.setProperty("password", "y");
good luck

This is really not the place for windows questions, so try to google it:
    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=customize+command+prompt+window+site%3Amicrosoft.com
From Run... or existing command line one could use argument to cmd.exe, or the built-in color command. Example:
    C:\Users\Public>cmd /T:F0

  • SQL*Plus vs web/browser admin interface for 10g Express

hello, I'm a newbie in Oracle. Seem like I executed the setup script using SQL*Plus successfully (the scrpt CREATE TABLE then INSERT setup data) but seems like Oracle 10g Express web/browser interface tells me the setup data has never been inserted into the tables created?!

I verified this from SQL*Plus environmet:

I then closed SQL*Plus and tried to browse via :

I ran the count(1) SQL again just to check. The table is empty?! I logged into SQL*Plus AND 10g web interface using same credential dev/dev. Not sure what's happening why I can see data from SQL*Plus but not web/browser admin interface

We are currently in the process of migrating some applications from Oracle 10 to 11. Our admins have setup a new development system for us with an Oracle 11 instance. Regarding performance the new system behaves more or less the same than our old, e.g. when executing SQLs we notice hardly any performance differences and those we find are slightly in favour of the new system.
But now we discovered that the time it takes to establish a database connection via SQL*Plus is longer on the Oracle 11 system. Running the following code
    sqlplus -s user/pw@database <<END
    quit
ENDa thousand times takes ~60s under Oracle 10 but ~140s under Oracle 11. This may not seem much but we are running a test framework consisting of a bunch of shell scripts where several thousand connections are openend via SQL*Plus to execute some SQLs, so that even this small time difference results in rather huge difference in total runtime. The SQLs themself require roughly the same time in both databases, as already mentioned above they are in fact slightly faster in Oracle 11.
To analyze the time difference I ran a trace for the connect with the following parameters in sqlnet.ora
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=4
TRACE_UNIQUE_CLIENT=ONand found out that there is a time difference of about 70ms during the connect handshake:

    (1) [22-MAR-2013 13:33:40:618] nscon: got NSPTRS packetAny ideas what could be the reason for this time difference? Something in our network configuration or something else?

With local connections - I do not think a TCP packet send from an IP to the same IP, leaves the interface as an actual wire protocol/signal. If I'm correct, then running local connection tests will be mostly useless in checking the actual network infrastructure.
Tests 3 and 4 should be showing the same connection times as the same physical network infrastructure is used - only the direction is reversed in the tests.
I would assume that port settings on the switches and interface settings on the routers treat packets equally in both directions between 2 servers. But this could in part explain the problem if this is not the case. In a case of a router for example, the 1st test's ingress interface is the egress interface of the 2nd test (and vice versa). Configurations can differ substantially between interfaces on the same router. Likewise if there is a firewall - as different rule sets are applied in each test and these rule sets could differ.
So I would not be too quick to state that this is definitely not a network problem. But I agree that based on the small percentage difference (assuming comparable tests), it does not look like a network issue.
The next step is to determine what the delay is between the listener accepting the client connection, and the connection being serviced by a dedicated server process.
This will require listener tracing - tracing the time from when the listener accepted the connection (and parsed the TNS connection string), to handing off the connection to the dedicated server process.
As a comparison test, you can also test shared server connections. Dispatcher processes (of the db instance) register themselves with the listener. The shared server client hand off is thus done to an existing server process - no need for the Listener to make a kernel call to load and initialise an executable image.
Shared connections are typically faster than dedicated connections in this respect.
If there is a major time difference, then it means some kind of issue with the listener dealing with dedicated servers as oppose to dispatcher hand off's. As both connections would have had very similar network transit time - which means the connection time difference is related directly to dealing with a dedicated server connection request and hand off.
You can also substitute the oracle executable with a wrapper - and troubleshoot the actual dedicated server startup. I've only done this with Oracle XE 10.2 though and with local IPC connections. Unsure how robust this will be for testing purposes via TCP using 11g.

  • Error when connecting to SQL*PLUS via ODBC to Excel

    OS: Windows 2000 Professional
    Oracle DB: 9i release 2
    SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.1.0
    MS Excel: 2000
    ===================
When I try to connect to SQL*PLUS via ODBC to Excel with "connect scott/tiger@odbc:libro" I get the following error:
ORA-03121: no interface driver connected - function not performed

SQL Server objects are commonly case sensitive, so please surround the column and table names by double quotes:
    SELECT "Type_PK_ID" FROM "dbo"."boundaries"@sqlserver
SIDE NOTE: Oracle is by default not case sensitive and all object names are stored in upper case. To get case sensitive objects they need to be surrounded by double quotes. In HSODBC case sensitive table names were commonly found even when not surrounded by double quotes as the gateway used internal SQL Server methods to find the correct table nameing - this method does not work for column names. So to be able to query a case sensitive column it needs to be surrounded by double quotes and the table name must be written as stored in the source database.

  • SQL*Plus 'Copy' command and LONG datatypes

Hi. I'm using Oracle 9.2.0.5 and wanna copy LONG to LONG without using an Interface in VB or any other programming language.
Some of the fields (plain text) are greater than 32 Kb, and I tried the SQL*Plus 'Copy' command, without success.
(For compatibility reasons I can't convert LONG to CLOB, I need to copy LONG to LONG)
This is the example I'm working with:
Table Source_LONG (ID number, DATA long)
Table Destination_LONG (ID number, DATA long)
The SQL*Plus command: (connected from test_database@environment)
    set long 100000
    copy from test_database/test_database@environment insert destination_long (id,data)
I tried using both FROM and TO, but same results.
The fields are copied into destination_long, but they are
truncated at 32768 bytes, even with the LONG variable set to 100000. Any ideas ?
    Thanks.

I'm working with 2 similar tables with this structure:
    SOURCE_LONG (ID number, DATA long)
    DESTINATION_LONG (ID number, DATA long)
    SOURCE_LONG contains two rows:
    ID DATA
    1 hello
    3 ....text bigger than 32kb...
I tried your solution and it insert 2 rows, but only the ID is filled. The DATA is empty in both cases :-(
    insert into destination_long(id,data) (select id,to_lob(data) from source_long);

  • Create database table using Forms Developer 6/6i without using SQL*Plus

    hello there,
I need help in creating tables in Oracle using Forms Developer 6/6i without using SQL*Plus interface.
    your help is appreciated
    email: [email protected]

please use Forms_ddl package to create a table dynamically
    from the Developer6/6i.
you can check the success or failure by using the
    form_success builtin.
if u want to avoid using the Forms_ddl package
use stored procedure or create a sql querry record group.
    regards

  • Copying and pasting sql statement in sql*plus

how do you paste sql statement in sql*plus...I have tried the following options, getting the windows interface for this following the documentation below but that didnt work
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/A88829_01/ch3.htm
then i tried creating a simple .txt file with my sql statement and tried running it using @name(where name is the name of the file) and it is giving me the following error SP2-0310: unable to open file "firstscriot.sql

    Hi,
Using the command-line interface, copying is a pain. Right click on the title bar at the top of the window, then click on "Edit" and "Mark". After you highlight the text you want to copy, you can press the Enter key to copy it.
To paste, simply right-click. It doesn't matter how the copy buffer got filled (the cumbersome process I described above, using Control-C in Notepad, or whatever).

  • SQL*Plus Worksheet formating

I have Oracle Client 8.1.7 installed in my computer, and I can't
seem to have the desired output format with the SQL*Plus
    worksheet.
I have a database where the tables have several column, and most
of these columns are text with 1024 characters length. I set the
linesize to a huge number (say 3000), the trim and trimspool on,
and I get the results ok.
But, when I want to do a select from a table which is much
smaller, the worksheet is always writing the complete linesize...
Is there a way to display the columns according to the size they
actually have (e.g. defined by the longest element) that is
always valid. I mean without having to set column options for
    each table.
    Thank you in advance.
    Ana

The column width sizing rules are a little opaque. The column size is a function of things like the width that the DB thinks the column is (could be huge if a SQL function is being selected), the column name or heading width, the linesize (for very wide columns), any global format (e.g. SET NUMWIDTH), or the explicit COLUMN FORMAT.
For consistency and portability I'd always recommend using an explicit COLUMN FORMAT. You can never tell if someone is going to run your report after previously setting a COLUMN FORMAT of the same name. Or a new database version may come out where the default datatype of a SQL function has changed. In the past this has happened when CHARs became the longer VARCHAR2s.
I don't think Enterprise Manager's SQL Worksheet (a simplistic interface that just calls SQL*Plus in the background) is doing anything special for formatting. So COLUMN FORMAT will work fine.

  • Cancel runnning SQL in SQL*Plus Worksheet?

    Hi,
can I Cancel a runnning SQL in SQL*Plus Worksheet?
    Thanks

    Probably not in current versions.
SQL*Plus Worksheet is just a Java wrapper around
command-line SQL*Plus. I recall the EM team were keen
to see a cancelling feature in 10g, which is one of the
reasons EM 10g will call iSQL*Plus.
The iSQL*Plus web interface has had cancel for a few versions
already. It has a button specially for that.

are included. Once these are working, then we can help
    setting up a SQL*Plus CGI.
If you are using Apache, check the httpd.conf file for the
ExecCGI option. See if you can get the "printenv"
demonstration CGI script working. Then move your SQL*Plus
CGI shell script to the same directory, and try it there.
Don't forget to echo a blank line after the "Content-type:
text/html", else the CGI output will not be interpreted
    correctly.
The SQL*Plus 9.2 UG&R has an example of a Perl CGI script
    for calling SQL*Plus:
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/release2/server.920/a90842/ch8.htm#1005951
The iSQL*Plus web-based interface does most of the things
done by a CGI based call to command-line SQL*Plus. Its
"Dynamic Reports" feature is very similar to getting a CGI
script to return a report from a static .SQL file. If you
    (i) have Oracle 9.2 (or 9.0 on Windows) installed (ii) don't
mind getting HTML pages back, then it may be a better
alternative to CGI. (Note the SET MARKUP HTML PREFORMAT OFF
command can be used to give traditional character aligned
text, but there will still be HTML page headers and
    footers).

  • SQL Plus vs OCI

    Hi All
    Client Server
    Debian Lenny
    Instant client 10.2
    SQL Plus 10.2
    Latest Apache/PHP and OCI
    ORACLE Server
    Win 2003 + Oracle 8.x
On the client server I can connect to the Oracle server through php and execute all kinds of queries that do not fetch a lot of data. But once the data being fetched is more than roughly 100kbyte nothing seems to happen anymore, a tcpdump only shows acks being sent from the client to the server.
    Example:
select * from table where rownumber < x "x is 1 to 45" <-- This returns the result correctly in a second
select * from table where rownumber < y "y is 46 and up" <-- This query simply keeps hanging, no time out nothing, if executed from command line it hands if executed in the browser it just keeps loading. If tcpdump is launched to monitor it, after the first two seconds all that happens is that the client sends acks to the server.
However, if I use sqlplus 10.2 on the same Debian server, I can execute
select * from table, and all 16000 rows are fetched and displayed in the sqlplus console.
I really dont know what the problem is and what to look for here. Is the data being returned back to the client in SQL Plus in a differnet fashion than in OCI ? What could be the problem ? Can I use SQL plus through PHP ? I.e. in a similar fashion, like get rows as results and not some piped data ?
    Any hints are appreciated.
    Regards

I did try out AdoDB instead of OCI, it works flawlessly so far. However, do you have any info on performance comparison between the two. And can I also use Oracle stored procedures in AdoDB ?Wrong questions.
OCI stands for Oracle Call Interface - this is the interface that is used to interact with Oracle. Send SQLs. Executed stored procedures. Etc.
Databases each have their own. SQL-Server and Sybase for example have an interface called dbLib.
Using the database interface directly from a programming language is not easy as the interface is complex. So complex for example, that most C application development for Oracle will not use the OCI directly. Instead the Pro*C precompiler is used to change pseudo C/SQL code into C/OCI calls, before compiling the source with the C compiler.
AdoDB is an interface that runs on top of OCI (or dbLib if you're using SQL-Server). So too is ODBC. Or BDE. Or OLEdb and so on.
These are all higher level interfaces - making it easy for the programmer to use the underlying (complex) database interface like OCI (or dbLib).
This high level interface cannot communicate directly with the database. It needs the underlying database call interface driver. In the case of AdoDB in PHP using Oracle - that still needs an Oracle client driver and that still uses the Oracle Call Interface/OCI.
Using AdoDB does not mean that there is no longer an OCI. There is. Simply that now instead of you dealing with the complexities of OCI, AdoDB is doing that for you.

  • Installation 9i lite / try to open SQL plus in Win XP

    Good day,
I install Oracle 9i lite on my pers computer and want to open SQL Plus but ask me for a User Name, Password and Host String.
I tried them all, system/manager, scott/tiger, name it. Is there any doc in plain english or french on installation, configuration so I can use SQL Plus on my pers computer with win XP.
    Thanks
    Martin

9i LITE (so far as I know) does not support SQL*PLUS. If you need SQL*PLUS install Personal Oracle instead.
9i LITE is a light-weight database and supports ODBC, JDBC, and a command line interface "msql". SQL*PLUS is not included. Open a DOS window and enter
    msql system/manager@POLite
this works IF you installed the development SDK stuff (see your ODBC DSNs and look for a new DSN called POLite).
If you don't have the DSN POLite, then you don't yet have a database created for msql to access. See the manuals on how to create the database in Oracle Lite.
