No saved files showing up in lightroom

I save a photo that I've edited in photoshop cs5, either jpeg or tiff, and when I go to Lightroom 3.6 I can not locate the file. It shows up in bridge under the right location. I reinstalled both Lightroom and photoshop and no change. What am I doing wrong?

The only way for LR to automatically import photos edited on CS5 is to have Lr open while you edit in CS5.
If you choose not to do so - it is memory consuming - you´ll have to import the psd´s into LR later.
Here´s my workflow:
Basic edit in LR, then open the file in CS5 with the right click menu - edit in CS5.
Leave LR opened.
Immediately save the file as a PSD - I do this in a different location.
LR now ´knows´ about the PSD.
Close LR.
Edit in CS5, close CS5, open LR and go to the appropriate folder in the catalog.
LR will tell you that the file has been changed by another application and ask if you want to import the settings from disc.

  • Why Won't PSCS3 Edited Files Show Up In Lightroom?

What am I doing wrong here?
I am trying to go from Lightroom to Photoshop CS3. Why won't the resulting edited photos -- the .psd files -- then show up in Lightroom?
In Lightroom, I right-click on the image I want to edit and select "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3. I am then presented with three options(I usually select 'edit a copy') and there is a check box at the bottom to "stack with original" which I leave checked.
Then I go into Photoshop, edit the image, and save it, usually as a .PSD file. Then I close the file and return to Lightroom, but all I can ever find then are jpegs, no sign of the .psd file I just created.
I want Lightroom to stack the edited PSD on top of the jpeg and show it instead of the original jpeg. What I DON'T want to have to do is then go around and import the file into the library. That seems redundant... lousy work flow.
So, is there some way to get those PSDs that I create between LR and PS to show up in LR without going round in circles?
    Thanks,
    --PS

Is the photo in a collection? If it is and you edit in Photoshop, it will not appear stacked in the collection. However, if you switch to folder view you will see that it is stacked and it is on top of the stack.
Just after I posted this reply, I saw Lee Jay's reply and he right-on-the-mark. I had missed, well skipped over your line in your message that said:
    >Then I go into Photoshop, edit the image, and save it, usually as a .PSD file.
Do not "save as" in Photoshop, just save the file and it should appear back in Lightroom: in the collection view it will appear as a separate image, in folder view it will be stacked.
(I also looked at Adobes help and and easy-to-miss sentence is in there:
    >After making edits in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, you will be prompted to save any changes to the photo sent from Lightroom. Be sure not to do a Save As and rename the photo because the newly-created photo will not be automatically added to the library.)
And this is the link where I found the foregoing quote:

  • Saving Files from Photoshop to Lightroom

In LR 3 when I saved an image after editing in PS, the edited file showed up next to the original RAW file. Now in LR 4, the saved image is placed at the end of the folder. It there a preference somewhere that I can set to tell LR that I want it placed next to the original? I like to see them side-by-side and don't like having to go searching for the edited file.
    Thaanks.

I don't think so. By sorting them manually (user order), you're effectively over-riding the capture time default , so it wouldn't be logical for it to sort by both at the same time, if you see what I mean. How would LR be able to figure out which files to sort automatically, and which ones to leave alone?

  • Files not showing up in Lightroom 4.4

I was reorganizing/rationalizing my hard drive file folders outside of Lightroom.
Now not all the images in the folders show up in Lightroom 4.4
    For instance:
In a 2014 folder there are 25 files. Lightroom's Folders panel shows the number as 15. If I try Import it shows all 25 files but the missing 10 are greyed out and thus not available for import.
If I Syncrhonize the folder, the little dialog says there are 10 files to be imported, but when I click Synchronize another dialog comes up saying there are no files to import.
Suggestions on how to make the files available in Lightroom 4.4 would be helpful, Thanks.

You will probably find that if you go to "All Photographs", some photos now have a ? icon on them. This is because you have moved or renamed photos outside of LR. You can reconnect the photos via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder-old.htm. I would NOT even try synchronizing as a solution in this case; as you have already seen, it won't fix the problems.
As Tom said, you really need to get out of the habit of moving things around in your operating system. Not gradually get out of the habit, or partially get out of the habit, but completely and immediately get out of the habit of doing this. Just don't do it anymore.
If you MUST move folders and photos, do so within Lightroom. Drag and drop to a new location in the Lightroom Folder panel. But if you're going to put the effort into "reorganizing/rationalizing my hard drive file folders", let me suggest what I think is a superior way to go ... don't reorganize your folders at all ... instead put the effort into assigning keywords and other metadata to your photos, and from that point on, use keywords and other metadata as your search mechanism. Not only does this result in fewer problems in the long run, but it gives you the potential to create a far superior organization than anything you can accomplish by moving folders around. In fact, I'll guess even further that the reason you want to move your folders around is because folders aren't exactly getting the job done ... and in that case I'm also guessing (but pretty sure) that you will find keywords and other metadata easily overcome these limitations. I can be more specific if you want.

  • Saving as .mp3 file, but file shows up as .wav

Been using AA 3.0.1 a long time, but can't explain why this is happening. I usually save a song as a wave file, no problem, but then I do a "save copy as", in order to make an mp3 of the song, but now my choice to save is this:
    mp3PRO (FhG) (*.wav,*.mp3).
First off, I don't ever recall the *.wav ever being part of the file extension along with *.mp3. Secondly, after I save the file the song shows up as "mysong.wav", instead of "mysong.mp3", but looking at the file size, around 5k for a 256kbps that runs around 2:30, makes it look to be saved as an mp3 file...a wav file size would be around 25000kb.
So, it looks like it's being saved as a .mp3 file, but showing that it was saved as a .wav file.
How the heck did this happen, and what can I do to make sure that the publisher I'm sending an .mp3 file to, is actually getting an .mp3 file, and won't have any trouble opening it??
Another crazy thing to mess with me and use up what little time I have...
    Harry

Usually because an mp3 has been saved accidentally with  .wav left at the end of the name, a fairly common occurrence. Just do an mp3 Save As again and actually type .mp3 on the end of the name. This should correct Audition's adding .mp3 to the end of saved mp3s automatically again.
I suspect that your saved file is in fact an mp3 so just rename it correcting the suffix.

  • Saved PSD files show up as small thumbnails oinly in Bridge

Ive been working on some photos in ACR/CS2 and a strange thing happened. After working on raw files I save them in a separate working folder as psd files. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my PSD files are showing up in Bridge as tiny thumbnails. This just started happening in the middle of working on a folder of raw files. The first few were fine and then the saved files began showing up as thumbnails.
Moving the slider to make them bigger doesnt do anything. I can make all the files smaller by moving the slider to the left, but moving to the right only makes the files thumbnail size. Very weird. This problem seems limited to Bridge. In PS they look fine. Ive even checked their file size and that looks fine. Ive closed and reopened Bridge, but that had no affect.
I cleared ACR preferences and purged the folder; that brought back some files but then others became small. Also when working on new files, the first few were again OK and then again files became thumbnail size in Bridge. I can open the files, save them to another folder and then copy them to the original folder, over writing the old, thumbnail size folder. I suspect all this has to do with cache and some setting, but I can't figure out the random nature of all this.

Actually I found the problem... under Bridge preferences, check to see if the "do not process files larger than ____MB" is less than the PSD file size.... i.e. my psd file was 229.24mb and my limit was set at 200mb... then once you change this go to cache settings and purge, it will reset the thumbnails and clear the small view issue.

  • Simplesave sd320a does not show saved files or directory structure, disk full?, I can restore

I was saving files from an old win95 machine to bring them to a new laptop which is windows 7.  I plugged in the drive which is not full and I can only see the hp launcher.  In drive properties this drives shows 100 pct full.
I can and did pull up an old simple save backup and restore pictures.
The windows 7 machine is a locked down work machine.  Maybe the file structure was changed by the windows 95 machine and now my windows 7 machine can not see the root directory?
I have not written to the drive since storing all of the pictures from the 95 machine and unplugging the external hard drive.
I am looking for help on how to see the files in the root directory that I simply use the copy command to move them on to the external drive.

    OldGhias,
Have you found a solution yet? I don’t know if I will be of any help but I was curious and no one else has chimed in yet.
I don’t quite understand all of your statement.
To clarify, you were making SimpleSave backups from Win95 and cannot see them all on the Win7 laptop?
    Or
You were copying files over (SimpleSave utility not used) and you cannot see those files on Win7 but you can on the Win95 machine?
Do you have another Win7 machine you could connect the external to, to see if the files are still not showing (one that is not locked for work)?
On the drive that shows full, can you see it in Disk Management showing the correct size of the drive and also another CD drive? Not your real CD/DVD drive, it’s actually a CD emulator that is attached to the HDD for encrypting the backups and all SimpleSave’s have them.
Lastly, did you reformat the SimpleSave drive to Fat32 first?
My understanding is that USB support was quite limited on Win95 machines. Since Win95 is Fat32 and the SimpleSave drive is by default NTFS, I would think it would not work.

  • How can i get my saved files from 4.1 to show up on 5.n?

how can i get my saved files from 4.1 to show up on 5.n?

The document saving portion of the app was moved to the printer control app for the 5.0 update. You can use file sharing to copy the files from your device with 4.1, and then copy them in to the printer control app after. This can either be done wirelessly, or by USB through itunes. The document below will show you how to do both options to get them copied off of the device. Then you simply do the same steps in the printer control app to copy files back in.

  • Having problems getting saved files in PS CS3 to show up in folders in Vista - help?

My sincerest apologies if this has floated across oyur screens before, but I don't seem to be pluggin in the correct set of keywrds to bring it up in the search if it has.
Here's my dilemma. I just bought a new computer which came preloaded with Vista, and uploaded my old copy of CS3 onto it. The program seems to be working fine, except that when I open a file in Photoshop and edit it, then save it in a new file (as I do for most of my photoshoots, etc), or even when I save it in the orignial folder, the new "saved" file will not show up in the Vista folder. If I go back to Photoshop and open the folder via File>Open, I can access all of my pictures, but to I cannot access them to upload to the internet, email, use in other programs, etc.
If I go into "Recently Changed Documents" I can find them, but they seem to be in a temp folder in the Adobe folders. But again, if I go back to Adobe, it says they are in the folder I put them in.
Any ideas what's going on here?
Thanks so much for any help you can offer,
    Cass

They are hidden for whatever reason, either you have a permission problem or they are registered incorrectly with Explorer. Open the folder, then check Extras --> Folder Options. Disable the Hide System Files option and then the more generic Hidden Files section a little lower. If that reveals the files, it's time to check the File Types tab in the same panel and see, why it actually thinks your documents are system files. the simplest solution would be to remove the PSD association and then create it new, when you open a file wit6h a double-click. Of course al lthe above assumes that not some security tool or another application is "stealing" your file type associations. If you have such tools, checking their config may already solve the problems.

  • Saving PSD files after exporting from Lightroom saves incorrectly

I've only recently moved to Lightroom from using Photoshop/Bridge together, so I'm not 100% sure how saving files exported from Lightroom should go. But here's what I experience:
Base edit of file within Lightroom
In library view, right click on image -> Edit in -> Open as Smart Object in Photoshop
Perform all my necessary edits and such
File -> Save As, and save it to another location as a PSD file (totally different HDD)
    Perform more edits....
Shortcut CTRL+S to save, and it saves it as the TIFF file under the location it was originally in within Lightroom
Eh...? Am I missing something. It should just save as the original PSD I created when I went "Save As". I have seen on a few occasions, immediately after "Save As", the file name resorts back to TIFF and not as PSD.
My settings for External Editing in Lightroom are as follows:
    File Format: TIFF
    Color Space: ProPhoto RGB
    Bit Depth: 16 bits/component
    Resolution: 300
    Compression: None
Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Also, to note, that sometimes I double click on the Smart Object within Photoshop to load Camera Raw and perform some edits, but not often.

Re Camera Raw being used to pass an image to Photoshop
    a) I am assuming this is independent of the Compatibility level in Preferences\File Handling DNG creation.
    b) Does the same apply to other photo editing software made by Adobe like Elements?.
Reply: Yes, the principle is the same. Photoshop Elements cannot read raw data either. That's why it has to be converted before it's opened.
    c) Assume that I have LR 5.7.1 and CS5. Is Camera Raw is still used to pass an image to Photoshop? If so, why is there a need to get LR to behave differently?
Reply: Camera Raw is used IF you choose the option to open anyway. Then Camera Raw will be used to convert the image that's opened in Photoshop. But since it is older than Lightroom some of the new adjustments might not be transferred to Photoshop. That's why there is a need to let the user make the choice.
    d) Sometimes it does seem as if Adobe might be using Camera Raw updates and process version updates to get consumers to change their habits, this includes having to buy subscriptions or having to change workflow to some ideal that somebody at Adobe or working with Adobe might have in mind.
Reply: The fact is that in the past, when a new version of Photoshop is released then all support and updates cease for the previous version. Since the introduction of the creative cloud, at least users of Photoshop CS6  get support for new cameras. They just don't get the new features. Yes, there's motivation to upgrade. Adobe is a business. What do you really expect?
    Re stacks
I find impossible to see collapsed stacks on the film strip. Stacks are only visible on the Library module and using a grid view; I don't say clearly visible because they are only recognisable by the label at the top left corner with the image count; I don't even think it is possible to change the colour of that label or the grey colour surrounding an image. Also I cannot name stacks. If I could name stacks, see them as virtual folders underneath a library folder and make them glaringly visible I would use them extensively.
Reply: The only reason I can think of that you are unable to see collapsed stacks on the filmstrip is if you have the filmstrip reduced in size to the point that Lightroom can't display all the icons. I'm able to see the collapsed stacks in the library grid view and on my filmstrip
Re storing your Raw files and processed files in separate locations
Assuming Raw files are negatives and Photoshop files are transparencies or prints, would you want negatives being handled/read on a regular basis? If anything happens to your negatives, you would never be able to produce another print or another transparency again.
Reply: The raw files or the negatives, as you put it, are never modified by Lightroom. They always remain in their pristine state they were in when they were imported. If I have a backup of that raw file then I can do whatever I want to the one in my working folder. Resetting that raw file so that it looks unaltered is just a click away.
I have worked extensively with databases and database systems, it is a standard feature of database systems to be able to choose where to store different database objects. I don't see why LR cannot do the same, it is a database after all. I do agree with both the OP and photo.
Reply: Well, I won't argue that point. If that's what you really want than lobby for it. It just won't get my vote because I don't see any real advantage.
If you read back through this quoted message you'll find that my replies are included. I don't know how to separate them out so they are highlighted properly. Read through it and think about it. But personally, I don't want to waste anymore time on this discussion because it isn't accomplishing anything in my opinion.

  • Downloaded and Saved Files Do Not Show On Desktop

I've noticed just in the past two weeks that files such as email attachments, photos, or other files downloaded from Safari or Mail do not appear on the desktop where the default location is set. Also, this happens when I save a Word document or a document from another application (it's not application specific) and it's supposed to show up on the desktop. When I go to find them, they're not there. They don't show up in a separate Finder window either. In order to get them to show up, I have to do a spotlight search for them. Spotlight's file path for the file is always to the desktop where it's supposed to be. Once I click on it in Spotlight to see the filepath, then the file shows up on the desktop like it was supposed to. What in the world is going on?
    1) This did not start happening after an update.
    2) Not application specific - it happens no matter what I try to save to the desktop.
    3) It just started happening one day with no apparent reason.
    4) My hard drive sounds fine - no unusual noises.

Sounds to me like you just need to Repair Permissions with Disk Utility then rebuild launch services database. Use the method described here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html
This one solves lots of odd problems. And repairing permissions is just the standard first step any time you have a problem. Also, a simple restart can often fix things like this.
Another method can be restarting in Safe Mode, right after the bong hold down the shift key until the login window appears which should say Safe Mode on it. (This automatically fixes a number of things, but if you have any font settings in Font Book you will need to redo them.) Then just restart normally.

  • Office 2013 applications cannot be made to show the "Documents" folder when opening and saving files

(Windows Server 2012R2 and Windows 8.1 PRO)
We are redirecting the user's "Documents" folder to the network (using Folder Redirection). The OS hides this fact however, and most applications simply see the "Documents" folder when opening or saving files, including Office 2003.
Office 2013 however displays the actual path, which in this case is:
    \\sever1\redirect$\username\documents
Even if you forcibly set the "Default local file location:"  in the Options Save area to the 'Documents' folder in, say, Word, Word immediately converts the local path to the network path.
Is there anyway to get Office 2013 to follow the virtual path? All of other apps follow it and expose the users only to "Documents".
    Thank you so much.

There's nothing in my FAQ concerning screen savers, so I'm unsure why you decided to take that approach. From your description, it looks like you only tried a few of the suggestions before throwing in the towel. That's fine, it's your call.
I don't have the problems you described with 10.4.7. Usually when folks have problems after an update, these are caused by either installing an update on an already-corrutped system or they've installed third-party applications or hardware that have been rendered incompatible by the update.
Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.

  • Files show as corrupted in LR 5, when stored on an external HD

Basically, the title sums it up. I was running out of space on my 500GB laptop HD, so I decided to start saving RAW files to an external 1TB HD. Immediately, the files started showing up as corrupted when viewed in Develop module. Only a few at first, but it got progressively worse - to the point of 80% corrupt and unusable.
I thought this was a HD problem. So I went ahead and bought a second HD (2TB) and started saving files there. Same problem. Now, when I try to save the same files to the laptop HD - no problem, all is well (as it has always been before; the issue was space).
I was willing to allow for it to be the external drive problem. But what are the chances that TWO external hard drives in a row will be problematic (especially when everything else on them is fine)? Not high, I reckon.
So I am trying to wrap my mind around it and it drives me mad - I cannot work, I don't know what is going on and I have no idea what to do... It cannot be the camera - again, the same files are fine when saved to the internal HD. It cannot be the SD card - I am using several, from different companies and bought at different times, and again, the files are fine in the internal drive. It cannot be the external drive failure - I tried two in a row, and everything else on those drives is fine. But when viewed in LR 5, those files on external drives show up as corrupted. I am losing my mind!
I would much appreciate any help and input. I have no idea where to turn with this - it is not computer problem per se, and there is no "Lightroom repair" that I know of...
    Thanks for looking at this!

Thank you for replying. That is right, I am quite suspicious of memory - my laptop is full to the brim and I suspect that this may affect available memory and cause some problems in LR. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about computers to be certain.
The card reader - quite simple: the card reader is the same, whether I save the files to the internal or external drives. I put the SD card in it, then copy the files and paste them where I want them. When done, I then open the LR and synchronize the folder. When I copy and paste files to the internal drive, the images look fine in LR; when I copy and paste them into the external drive, 80% of them come up visually corrupted in LR. Since the same card reader is used in both cases, and the files are OK when saved internally, I am assuming it is not the card reader.
So, basically, when I became aware of the problem, I tried copying and saving the same file both internally and externally from the card reader, in order to verify what was going on. That is how the same file (more than one, actually) ended up on three different drives.
Right now, my instinct is to copy everything to an external drive and clear some space on the internal one. I am very apprehensive though - what if something is causing file corruption on the external drives - in that case I will be corrupting everything when I migrate the files. Hence my previous question - are the files actually corrupted, or do they simply appear corrupted in LR because of memory issues? As I said, I don't know enough about this to be certain and do not know what to do.
