No Sound in VLC and Virtualbox

I have a workstation with two sound outputs - my ESI Juli@ and the HDMI out on my FirePro V5800.  I have an issue where some applications cannot produce sound.  That said, alsamixer and the OS itself do see the card, and it works just fine for sound from Firefox.
Originally, my issue was ALSA defaulting to the HDMI out and not giving me any audio.  I first solved this by blacklisting the module for snd-hda-intel (the HDMI out).  This "hack" allowed the OS to automatically choose the Juli@ as the default sound card and got sound working in the OS itself and Firefox.  But then, I realized VLC and Virtualbox weren't working with the card and figured I should find a more proper solution.  I got the following message from VLC:
"VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any).
Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue."
Looking at the ALSA page on the Arch wiki, I decided that manually reordering the modules was necessary.  The documentation there was poor, though, and I couldn't figure it out.  Eventually, I found a forum post about the above error message and someone put things in more simple language.  As such, I've modified my modprobe.conf to look like this:
# /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
options snd-ice1724 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1
I must've done something right, because the OS and Firefox get sound just fine with the Juli@ as the default sound card without me blacklisting the HDMI out's module.  However, my issue in VLC and Virtualbox remains with the same errror message, so I figure I'm missing something.
Here is the output of aplay -l:

I'm thinking the system seeing the Juli@ as two devices means I need to add another line to modprobe.conf, but I'm not really sure at this point.  It'd be awesome if someone a little more expert regarding ALSA and maybe this audio chipset could please give a guy some help.

BUMP for this one.
I've updated packages since then, as well as manually selecting ALSA as playback for these two programs with no luck.  I've tried using the instructions here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … le-ice1724
But it seems like most of it isn't relevant...  My Arch install has soundcore.ko.gz, snd-cmipci.ko.gz, and snd-ice1724.ko.gz just by proxy.  The part about /etc/conf.modules is deprecated in Arch as well.
I'm dying to have sound in VLC and my VMs on my desktop.  Please help!

  • I don't have idvd but i need to burn my movie from iMovie! what do i do? i have dvds but every time i try to use one, the sound is off and it doesn't work on quick time or adobe... help!!

i have made a movie in imovie on my macbook pro, but apparently i don't have idvd!!!
i need to burn this so i can watch it somewhere else, but im not sure how...
ive already tried simply exporting it to Quick Time, and burned it to a dvd, but when i watched it... the sound was wrong and people's words were like muted...
what do i do?!?! i don't know where or how to get idvd!
    help!!!

    Hi
There are two structures of DVDs
    • Data-DVD - as burned from DeskTop/Finder
    • Video-DVD - to be played on a DVD-Player - Needs a program that can do this
One can in iMovie - Export as QuickTime .mov and save this via DeskTop/Finder onto a DVD - BUT this will only play on a Computer and if it is a Window-PC this needs to download QT-player or VLC-player.
But no DVD-player for TV can play back this.
To get a Video-DVD then You need
    • iDVD (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • DVD Studio Pro (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • FinalCut Pro-X (can do simple Video-DVDs) - or -
    • Burn - http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html - FREE - but very PLAIN - no fancy things at all.
    • Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro - Fairly advanced - and costs a bit - still very Good and lot's of great tool's included. (I love it) - Can also back convert home made DVDs to an editable mode in an OK quality. With BD-component also capable to do sort of Blu-Ray DVDs.

  • No sound in VLC

I had no sound out of the box with Arch so I followed the instructions located at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio.
Once I did this, I had sound effects in KDE and music played fine in JuK. However, I continue to have no sound in VLC.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Umm well I've just recalled that the full KMix interface (what you get when you click "Mixer" in the volume control drop-down) at least displays the per-application control but I'm not sure about allowing you to choose between outputs...
I don't know what it is that makes PA choose which output to use for which program so I don't know why it chose to put VLC on that output, I guess that the KDE settings don't control the PA default but only which device phonon uses.

  • Sound loss, crashes and other problems

    Hello,
I have been having some serious problems over the past several months.
In the past it was fairly manageable, but recently things have been getting worse.
I have a 12-inch PowerBook G4, I bought it at the McGill bookstore in October 2004. The first problem was the apparently random crashes that Mac OS X (v.10.4.8) would experience from time to time. It was fairly infrequent at first so it didn't bother me too much (and I thought it was just some sort of glitch). But it persisted and came to be expected.
What would happen is that my screen would darken and center box would appear telling me, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." (it would display this message in English, French, German, and Japanese for my convenience). After I restart the computer I get the message, "The computer was restarted after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly". At first it seemed to be linked to time; after a while it would just crash, sometimes after an hour or so, sometimes after as little as five minutes. (I fear as I write this that I will have to start over). More recently I've come to associate the crashes with movement of the computer; perhaps the battery (which is pretty much dead after so much use) is affecting the performance, I don't know.
The next problem, which coincided with the crashes, was my clock being reset. I assumed this was directly associated with the spontaneous shutdown of the computer, yet though the crashes continued, the clock was not always reset (just about a third of the time). This was a pretty frustrating inconvenience given the frequency of the crashes at the beginning.
The major problem that prompted me to take action was the lose of sound. One day, about a month ago now, my sound suddenly stopped working. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but then I noticed the sound was still working with some things and just not others. For example, the sound increase/decrease indicator (the 'pop' sound when turning up or down the sound) stopped working, yet the startup sound still worked. I've found that Realplayer, MPlayer X 2, and Windows Media Player work fine but iTunes, VLC, and Quicktime don't. Most of the applications simply don't make sound but when I try to video in VLC I get the following error: "auhal: we cannot find our HAL component" or "auhal: audio-device var does not exist. device probe failed."
Other minor errors I have come across include inability to detect the Airport card (remedied upon restarting the computer) and occasional seizing up of the keyboard (the letter keys, exclusively, were unresponsive for sometime before working again suddenly without need of restart).
I've run diagnostic tools such as Disk Utility and the 'fsck' command in single-user mode, but nothing has been detected. It consistently comes up saying that everything is alright.
I have backed-up all important files and programs (with the exception of my Firefox bookmarks, do you know how I can save those?) and am prepared to do whatever it takes to bring my computer back to working order. I need my computer for schoolwork and assignments so if I can fix it myself in anyway... I would prefer to avoid lengthly repairs if possible.
Please let me know what my options are, and/or possible things I can do to repair these problems. This whole affair is, unsurprisingly, driving me crazy.
One last thing, upon launching Microsoft Word, I get the following pop-up:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "3<Microsoft Word><Microsoft Word><MicrosoftLSLibZ>"
I do not know whether this is linked to my other problems or not. This too, is something that has recently come up and is significantly affecting my work (I have had to switch to writing my essays on TextEdit).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Eric Oosenbrug

  • 5.1 Surround Sound in VLC with OSS4

I don't seem to get 5.1 surround sound in vlc with oss4. The audio device's available in vlc are stereo and mono only even when playing 5.1 surround sound compatible media.
    Is this issue still unresolved?

    ok.... strap your-self in Freddie
with a surround panner, bleed-over (on to other channels) can be ugly as i have found surround panners are anything BUT precise (perhaps accurate, as you say but NOT precise). Oh don't forget that sub channel. The bus trick really helps out here with limiting and compression..blahblahblah.. Automation with panning (on the main track) and bussing (i know this sounds goof-ball) making dup tracks for different panning functions (like sweeping aircraft sound spinning around the sweat-spot spectrum) leverages standard (old-skool) automation 'thinking' rather then the (new-skool) surround panner thinking... plus i'm still waiting for a low cost HUI style mixer with REAL tactical 3d surround panning joysticks so i can truly leave the stereo world. the mouse and a surround panner is the 'lame' some times.
But, yah, i do mix in both worlds..5.1 panners and my uber-hax0r bus panners. To tell the truth, when i'm in LP7 i still have use my bus trick in conjunction with 5.1 panners. Kinda too bad however that logic (Pro and Express) don't have the kewl mono/stereo into 5.1 effects of Digital Performer... oh well... good luck all you AC-3'ers out there!.. i'm going back to work...[beep]

  • [SOLVED] Do I need to install Codecs if I use VLC and Clementine?

I realize that this might be a stupid question but I just want to be sure.
Do I need to install the Codecs listed on the Arch Wiki if I'm using VLC (for video) and Clementine (for audio)? If not, then is there any situation you can think of where I might need those codecs installed even after I have the necessary media apps?

drcouzelis wrote:What codecs and wiki page are you referring to?
All the relevant codecs needed to play videos and audio files listed on Codecs.
drcouzelis wrote:Do you have a video or audio file that doesn't play correctly? If not, then you're all set!
After installing VLC and ALSA, some videos played correctly while others opened with incorrect resolutions and a screeching and tearing sounds.

  • [solved]no sound in vlc after change to fluxbox!!

    hi,
im in the process of changing from kde to fluxbox. ive been using arch with kde for about 4 months, but got annoyed at memory consumption!! vlc was fine in kde.
i installed fluxbox, and used the existing kde programs to get me going in fluxbox, but over the last couple of days, i have swapped one kde app out for another app in (e.g. konqueror out - pcmanfm in) ive been using xmms for my music at which point i uninstalled amarok, but decided i wanted to watch a film, so.....
i got vlc going and the picture was there, but no sound!! so....
    i reinstalled vlc, no difference!
    i tried mplayer, no sound!
i then went to youtube.com and again, no sound!
so basically, i get sound out of xmms, but nothing else!! i havent played with any config files, i have just set a couple of apps to autostart, and installed about 5 apps thru pacman!!
any suggestion or advice would be extremely well appreciated!
    thanks!

ok, i just went back into kde, fired up vlc before i did anythin else and sound! so went back into fluxbox, did the same, and sound in vlc!!! thought ok, it just needed X restarting! but then fired up xmms, and nothin else would produce sound!!
it seems like xmms is taking over the whole sound server and nothing else can use sound as long as its running! even if xmms isnt playing, but just running! is there a way around this? or can someone recommend another music player?

  • Trying to Output Sound to Speakers and TV Simultaneously on H8-1360t

    Hi everyone -
I have an HP H8-1360t with an AMD HD 7570 video card, running Windows 7 64-bit.  I have speakers hooked up to the on-board sound via a standard 3.5mm cable.  I run DVI to my monitor and HDMI to my TV.  I am trying to get sound to go to the speakers and the TV simultaneously, without having to keep swapping the default playback device.  I tried the following that I found online:
    Open Sound panel
Select Speakers as the default playback device
    Go to the "Recording" tab
Right click and enable "Show Disabled Devices"
A recording device called "Wave Out Mix", "Mono Mix" or "Stereo Mix" (this was my case) should appear
Right click on the new device and click "Enable"
Right click on the new device and click "Set as Default Device"
Double click on the new device to open the Properties window
    Go to the "Listen" tab
Click on the "Listen to this device" checkbox
Select your HDMI device from the "Playback through this device" list
This worked the first time I tried it and I was getting audio through both the PC speakers and from the TV.  Since then, it no longer works and I am only get audio via one or the other, depending on what device I select as my default.  It's more of an annoyance than anything else - having to manually switch between output devices every time I want to watch something on my TV instead of my monitor.  I assumed I could get dual audio output and simply not turn on the PC speakers when I wanted to watch something on the TV and it worked the first time!  I don't understand why it is no longer working.  Thoughts?
    TIA!

    Thanks for the reply!
I believe that the answer is answer is yes to both questions - it defintely worked the first time.  I'm not sure if I tried it on the first reboot or not but it did not work the next time I tried it.  As far as what may have changed - I have no clue?!?  I do not see that the 7570 or the Beats audio had any updates.  According to Device Manager, I am running the latest IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver.
i did notice a couple of things tonight.  The video I used as a test the other day, that had audio and video going simultaneously on both displays, is displaying video on both the monitor and TV today but no audio on the TV.  That said, when I open up the Sound control panel, and click on the AMD HDMI Output, right-click, and click "test", I do get test "beeps" through my TV (while the audio from my video is running through my PC speakers).  So, it appears that it is indeed capable of outputting sound to both the PC speakers (via the onboard sound) and the TV (via the HDMI) - just not the same sound anymore!  Another thing I noticed is that when I go to the Recording tab, the Stereo Mix selection is noted as the Default Device, and I can watch the "meter" on the right move up and down in sync with the volume of the video I am playing back - only there is no sound via the TV.
As usual, when I switch to the HDMI Audio Output as the Default Device, the sound plays fine on my TV.
    This is strange...

My iPad does not have sound when on the Internet, including YouTube, but does have sound with iTunes and other apps.  How can I correct this?

If you are sure that you have sound in other apps - and if you can still hear keyboard clicks and get notifications, then system sounds are not muted. Try this and see if it works.
Close all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Sound on ipad and iphone

Since updating to os7.1.1 i lost my safari sound on ipad and iphone

    Hi pr1uk,
It appears your devices are experiencing audio issues. The following article provides steps which may help you find a solution:
If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support
Follow these steps and test the sound after each one.
Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
If you can hear sound from the speaker, then the speaker works. Continue with these steps to find the setting or switch that's affecting the sound. If you can't hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support.
Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. If you can see orange, it's set to silent.
    Restart your device.
Open an app that has music or sound effects. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
If you followed these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact Apple Support.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Bobby_D

  • Beginners Guide sound installation -- OSS and ALSA objective features

Beginners Guide sound installation -- OSS and ALSA objective features needed
    Hi,
In most wiki pages i just edit the things that i think need editing. Just look at the oss history
In all those cases i didn't really saw a need to ask for permission.. that would kinda destroy the wiki idea.
However i want to change the sound instructions in the beginners guide so i made a copy of the entire guide and the part that i changed there is: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Use … ling_Sound now i have a slight issue there. As you can see i'm in favor of OSS and because you can spot that it's not objective. Now i would ask 2 things.
    1. Could you all post your features of OSS and ALSA
    2. Once that's done can i have permission to place that section in the beginners guide? that will also include removing the sound installation from the beginners guide which i already did in my version
My personal reason to do this. i've read this  and am since then pro OSS and against the ALSA/PulseAudio combo. i think that combo needs to get out of linux (most notably Fedora and Ubuntu) ASAP. and oss needs to go back into the linux kernel
    Thank you for your time,
    Mark

I'm an alsa/pulse user, so I'll give a bit of the 'other side'.
    Alsa/pulse
    Pros:-
    network sound
advanced connection of sink/source (including merging sinks)
    bluetooth support!
highly supported by existing apps, either through directly supporting Pulse or through its alsa plugin (you should not need to recompile properly-written apps which do not assume they should write audio data directly to hardware, I think I only needed to recompile mpd on my system)
    Cons:-
Setup isn't the easiest. Can't comment vs OSS4 because I haven't tried it
    OSS4
    Pros:-
Everyone seems to say sound quality is better. I guess that's because they're comparing it with dmix alsa. Use pulse with alsa and you should not notice any difference in sound quality though.
    Cons:-
Most apps nowadays default output to alsa. Meaning OSS plays them using an alsa plugin.
    USB support is admittedly skimpy.
EDIT: Having read the sound article you referred to, my only comment is that the writer really has it in for Pulse... 3 seconds latency, where'd he get that from? I use pulse for audio recording (when I'm lazy to fire up JACK) and while there IS latency, its definitely in the ms range.

    markg85, libflashsupport isn't needed. [1]

If you don't know, please don't put in wiki, this could cause unnecessary problems.  As for the mms section:
If your stream sounds ugly in totem like it did with me then you could try to play it with another codec like ffmpeg (mplayer). That "fixed" the issue for me. This will not fix the issue that somehow pops up in gstreamer when playing MMS streams but it will give you the option to play it with good sound quality. Playing it in mplayer is simple:
    # mplayer mmsh://yourstreamurl
Could you fix this?  ffmpeg is not a codec .  Also define ugly, and what is somehow?

As for the things you didn't know. As soon as i fully understand how i can get a microphone working in OSS i will add that to the wiki as well. Unless you already know it.. in that case, feel free to add it.
For the mic, I did get mine going.  Can't remember just how I did mine (sorry, think I had to disable one of the inputs),  but do remember to prevent it from passing through the speakers had to disable "Misc Microphone".

For libflashsupport on the same page you linked it clearly states:
    #  Flash V9 and V10 require libflashsupport to output sound via OSS. Typically a 32-bit version of the library is required.
    # Flash V10 has a 64-bit version which requires a 64 bit libflashsupport.
Also i tested it with and without libflashsupport. On archlinux (x64 running here) there most certainly is a need for libflashsupport when you want to have sound in your flash. And yes i tested the archlinux OSS version and the mercurial version (running now) bith need it  installed manually! On my pc sound in flash didn't work without it but did with it. So, no not removing from the wiki as it's needed. But i see you removed it for me! please do NOT do that if you didn't even verified it. I use flash 10 x64 and i need it!
As for the ffmpeg "codec" changed it to backend.
And i did get the microphone working near perfect: http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=13192
Now for some news you all might like.
On my school i need to do an investigation to whatever i want and i'm heavily thinking about investigating the pros/cons of alsa compared to oss (or oss compared to alsa). That investigation will take from monday next week till next mondey till friday 23 of oktober. In that investigation i'm going to do some in depth look of alsa and oss and that will include the usability as well.
Following up on that investigation i will spend another 8 weeks on my school making a volume control application that can be used with alsa and oss and easily expandable with other sound systems. The goal of this is to make one sound application that can manage (in the first place) alsa and oss. oss is going to be implemented and alsa is probably going to be dummy implemented because it's likely way to much for me to implement both.
Before you get to exited, both projects (investigating and making the application) are just made up today and i just don't know if both will get accepted by my school. I asked one teacher and he liked the idea a lot and could potentially have a value for the sound management under linux. Once i do get this started i will involve the community (YOU!) with this since this project can't be done without the community specially the investigation.
And once i start and have something to tell/ask i will blog about it on http://blog.mageprojects.com
    edit::
And this idea already got dumped. read more a few posts down or click: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 34#p612634

  • ITunes 10.0.4.4 is stuttering at most HD videos (Win 8 64 bit). VLC and WMP works fine.

    Hi,
i have a problem while i'm trying to setup my iTunes on Windows. iTunes 10.0.4.4 is stuttering at the most of my HD videos (Win 8 64 bit).  On VLC and WMP all Videos are playing fine. My 3 years old Macbook PRO with much less computing power plays all my videos smooth. Unfortunately since i have a lot of iTunes stuff and iDevices i have and i wnat to use iTunes also under Windows 8 (64bit). The impossibility to play my movies smooth annoys me
Hope someone can help me Thanks!
