  • No Sound in VLC and Virtualbox

I have a workstation with two sound outputs - my ESI Juli@ and the HDMI out on my FirePro V5800.  I have an issue where some applications cannot produce sound.  That said, alsamixer and the OS itself do see the card, and it works just fine for sound from Firefox.
Originally, my issue was ALSA defaulting to the HDMI out and not giving me any audio.  I first solved this by blacklisting the module for snd-hda-intel (the HDMI out).  This "hack" allowed the OS to automatically choose the Juli@ as the default sound card and got sound working in the OS itself and Firefox.  But then, I realized VLC and Virtualbox weren't working with the card and figured I should find a more proper solution.  I got the following message from VLC:
"VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any).
Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue."
Looking at the ALSA page on the Arch wiki, I decided that manually reordering the modules was necessary.  The documentation there was poor, though, and I couldn't figure it out.  Eventually, I found a forum post about the above error message and someone put things in more simple language.  As such, I've modified my modprobe.conf to look like this:
    # /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    options snd-ice1724 index=0
    options snd-hda-intel index=1
I must've done something right, because the OS and Firefox get sound just fine with the Juli@ as the default sound card without me blacklisting the HDMI out's module.  However, my issue in VLC and Virtualbox remains with the same errror message, so I figure I'm missing something.

I'm thinking the system seeing the Juli@ as two devices means I need to add another line to modprobe.conf, but I'm not really sure at this point.  It'd be awesome if someone a little more expert regarding ALSA and maybe this audio chipset could please give a guy some help.

    BUMP for this one.
I've updated packages since then, as well as manually selecting ALSA as playback for these two programs with no luck.  I've tried using the instructions here:
    http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … le-ice1724
But it seems like most of it isn't relevant...  My Arch install has soundcore.ko.gz, snd-cmipci.ko.gz, and snd-ice1724.ko.gz just by proxy.  The part about /etc/conf.modules is deprecated in Arch as well.
I'm dying to have sound in VLC and my VMs on my desktop.  Please help!

  • My sound is stuttery and skips, Please He

I have the Sound Blaster Li've 5. card and my sound skips and sounds stuttery. I have tried other speakers and cards and have also tried different ports in the computer, but nothing seems to work. The drivers are all up to date. I am running Windows XP (just recently switched from 98) I don't know if there is something that needs to be changed due to upgrading to XP or what. Does anyone know what the problem could be or have any suggestions? I have also tried using other music programs and other types of music (burned CD's, regular CD's, internet music, downloaded music, DVD's etc.) all have the same problem. Please help, thank you!!

Not really, I'm in the UK and we can't get Movies or TV shows yet The only videos I have in iTunes are the promo videos from CD singles.
See if what I've suggested fixes your problem, if not post back and see if anyone else has any further ideas.
    Regards,
    Colin R.

  • I downloaded an album and all of the songs are missing a large amount of audio. For most of the songs, the sound cuts out and skips to the next song.

The album is "The Mantle" by Agalloch. Whenever I try to play a song, it will skip to the next song. For example, the song "Odal" ALWAYS stops playing at 12 seconds in.
If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Does this happen with all tracks? Has iTunes ever played music correctly on the computer?
Check out this Apple document -> iTunes and QuickTime for Windows: Audio does not play or plays incorrectly
If you bought thte album from iTunes and its the only one having a problem, you should contact the iTunes Store with Express Lane.

  • Why does my nano make a multi note sound and skip songs

When hooked up to a memorex ipod stereo, my iPod Nano (6th gen) VERY frequently will begin playing a song (while on shuffle/all songs) and after a few seconds or sometimes after a minutes or so the stereo will emit a multi-note sound and skip to the next song in the rotation. VERY ANNOYING to say the least. Is there anyone out there having this problem?

If it only happens when using Memorix iPod stereo, you need to contact their tech support.

  • Sound for messages and e-Mail get turned off after using handsfree in car

Does anyone have a solution when sounds alerting messages and e-mails are turned off after using the phone in var with handsfree (using Bluetooth)? The sounds are turned back on when restarting the phone but reoccurs after driving in car with handsfree again. This is very annoying when takling several trips with car during a day. The phone still rings when receiving a call.

I did find a solution to my iPhone-iPod-music-overriding-streaming-streaming-services-while-connected-to-USB problem  Although, this solution is likely only applicable to BMW owners with the BMW Apps feature aka 6NR.
There may be other/simpler ways, but this seems to work:
    1) Launch Pandora (or could be Mog, or other BMW Apps app) BEFORE you start iPhone/iPod playback
    2) Start playback of Pandora via ConnectedDrive/BMW Apps.
    3) Press Home button on iPhone, launch your streaming app.
The car still seems to think it's in the ConnectedDrive audio menu, as evidenced by the Entertainment details screen. You can now consistently play back any other audio service via your iPhone without the iPod audio overriding what you're doing. Good times! The only drawback so far is lack of ability to skip tracks via the steering wheel.
As long as you haven't started iPhone/iPod playback when you get in the car, you can often skip steps #1 and #2, and go straight into the ConnectedDrive menu, then go to step #3.  Either way, following steps #1-3 works everytime.

  • My iPod freezes and skips entire tracks

My iPod photo 40gig has started freezing up in the middle of playing. It has also occasionally stopped loading tracks. It'll bring up the screen for the next track, sit there for a couple seconds with the track on 0:00 and then go on to the next track (without playing it either, on and on). I've been restarting it four or five times a day at work, mostly for the freezes. After a restart, it's good for an hour or two, then POW.
The skipping/freezing started about five days ago and there weren't any abnormal circumstances surrounding it (no fire, water, ten foot drops, or verbal abuse).
I've tried Apple's "Five R's" including the iPod Restore. I'm going to try a second restore tonight (just to make myself feel better, not because I think it'll have a different result than the first restore).
I've also tried replaying the same song it froze on to see if it's a bad spot on the disk, but the freezes seem random.
Any ideas? Or should I drop this thing off at the Apple Store and let them have a crack at it? It'd miss her if she were gone for long, we've become very close.
    Thanks.

Yes, you can. It is a good idea to me too. You can check the HD of your iPod as follows
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

  • Stuttering and skipping audio, and an accidental QuickTime workaround

    Hi,
I've been having periodic problems with skipping and stuttering audio since the 10.5.6 or 10.5.6 update to OS X. Lately, it's become worse. Just about all of the audio on my system, except for Flash, stutters and skips. I visited the Genius bar at the local Apple store yesterday, and he had never seen anything like it, and suggested an archive and install of the OS, which I'm not quite ready to jump to yet. So this morning, I decided to post my problem here, and I thought it would be a good idea to make a recording of my audio problem so people would know exactly what I was talking about. Since this problem also exists in iTunes, I decided to open a QuickTime Audio Recording window while I had a particular audio file playing in iTunes repetitively. So I had the audio file playing, with its stuttering and skipping, and I opened the QuickTime Audio Recording, and waited for another skipping and stuttering occurrence. To my surprise, the skipping and stuttering stopped! I let the same audio file play for about 20 minutes, and it played perfectly. Also, while the QuickTime Audio Recording window was open, all of the other sounds (alert sounds from apps, etc.) played perfectly. When I closed the Audio Recording window, the audio problems came back! So the good news is that I've apparently found a workaround to my problem. The bad news is that I still don't know how to fix it properly. The Apple Genius suggested that I download and reinstall QuickTime, which I did, but that didn't solve the problem. I have a feeling now that this problem is related to QuickTime in some way. I'm wondering if anyone can offer additional suggestions as to a fix for this. When I right-click on an audio file and select the "Open With..." option, among the choices are three QuickTime versions, 7.5.5, 7.6, and 7.6.4, which make me think that there might be leftover components from older versions of QuickTime on my system. Is there any way that I can do a "clean" install of QuickTime that's more thorough than just a download and install?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Hi, QuickTimeKirk,
    You asked an interesting question, and here are the results;
When I tried to open a file with QuickTime 7.5.5, it opened, and the About box reported that it was indeed QuickTime 7.5.5.
When I tried to open a file with QuickTime 7.6, the QuickTime menu options briefly appeared for 1-2 seconds, and then disappeared. After this, I couldn't find any indication that QuickTime was running, neither by cmd-tabbing nor by looking at the processes in Activity Monitor.
And QuickTime 7.6.4 opens fine, and is listed as the default app for opening this particular audio file.
Here's some more info. I did a Spotlight search on "QuickTime", and it found two versions of the QuickTime app. Version 7.6.4 was in the Applications folder of my system drive, and Version 7.6 was in the Applications folder of a 10.4.11 installation that I have on another partition of the same drive. I found no listing for a 7.5.5 app, but when I looked again at the 7.5.5 About box, I saw the following:
    QuickTime Player
    Version 7.5.5 (249.24)
    Quicktime(tm) Version 7.6.4 (1327.73)
    Copyright (c) 1989-2008 , Apple Inc.,
    All Rights Reserved
Is this normal, to have two different versions listed for a single instance of QuickTime?
    Thanks for your help.
    Ken

  • Quicktime start to slow down and skip

i'm running a dual 2GHz G5 with 2.5 gigs of memory, stock 160 gig hard drive and QuickTime Player 7.1.1, and mac os x 10.4.6. i have subscribed to a podcast called MacBreak which uses video. using quicktime, on the dual, the video and sound start to skip. on an xp box, using quicktime, the video plays ok, 3 GHz, 512 megs, 30 gig hard drive at 7200 rpm. i've tried the movie, video podcast, on the mac using VLC's player and it played fine. well, some odd behavior with the extra information MacBreak was providing with the podcast, but the video was smooth, and the sound was clear and smooth. ok all that said, i would like to play the videos in quicktime on the mac, any ideas on how i can smooth the video and sound out on the mac using quicktime. (using the quicktime player) and if you can, please tell me why its not playing smoothly on the mac using quicktime player. (clearly the machine is fast enough to play the video podcast) its got to be a setting, right? thanks everyone.
    g.

I have a revision a imac g5 with the same problem with only macbreak podcast. I know leo laporte said that the podcast was done in 1080p and my computer with its built in 64 megabyte graphics card might have trouble with this podcast but your machine must have a better graphics card than mine. 1080p requires at least 128 megabytes of graphics memory built in. My machine played this podcast on quicktime fine until they came out with the update to quicktime last week or two ago. I was going to upgrade my memory until I came accross your story and your machines doing the same thing with much better specs. I think it might be the quicktime update that is causing a problem. Maybe Leo will talk about this problem since he is doing a mac show about macs.

  • I don't have idvd but i need to burn my movie from iMovie! what do i do? i have dvds but every time i try to use one, the sound is off and it doesn't work on quick time or adobe... help!!

i have made a movie in imovie on my macbook pro, but apparently i don't have idvd!!!
i need to burn this so i can watch it somewhere else, but im not sure how...
ive already tried simply exporting it to Quick Time, and burned it to a dvd, but when i watched it... the sound was wrong and people's words were like muted...
what do i do?!?! i don't know where or how to get idvd!
    help!!!

    Hi
There are two structures of DVDs
    • Data-DVD - as burned from DeskTop/Finder
    • Video-DVD - to be played on a DVD-Player - Needs a program that can do this
One can in iMovie - Export as QuickTime .mov and save this via DeskTop/Finder onto a DVD - BUT this will only play on a Computer and if it is a Window-PC this needs to download QT-player or VLC-player.
But no DVD-player for TV can play back this.
To get a Video-DVD then You need
    • iDVD (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • DVD Studio Pro (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • FinalCut Pro-X (can do simple Video-DVDs) - or -
    • Burn - http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html - FREE - but very PLAIN - no fancy things at all.
    • Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro - Fairly advanced - and costs a bit - still very Good and lot's of great tool's included. (I love it) - Can also back convert home made DVDs to an editable mode in an OK quality. With BD-component also capable to do sort of Blu-Ray DVDs.

I'm having problems (1) selecting onscreen text, (2) resizing menu boxes and selecting menues with the cursor. I'm not able to select menus and move them. I'm not sure how to correct this.

    1) This is because of software version 1.1. See this
thread for some options as to how to go back to 1.0,
    which will correct the problem...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=3754

    2) This tends to happen after videos. Give the iPod a
minute or two to readjust. It should now be more
    accurate.
    3) This?
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation
    point
    4) Restore the iPod
    5) Try these...
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo and Will Not Start
    Up
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo
I think 3,4, and 5 are related. Try the options I
    posted for each one.
    btabz
I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again

  • Song wont play and skips what should i do?

I downloaded a tune from itunes and wont play and skips. How do i delete it and re import it??

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting that track from your iTunes library and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes (or the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your phone).
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if it re-downloads with the same problem then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link and fill in details about the problem (iTunes support should reply within, I think, about 24 hours).
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work (it's been taking some people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.

  • Itunes 7 and skipping?

I have iTunes 7.1.1.5 and when I play cds the sound cracks or sounds like it is skipping. If I import the songs, everything is fine. If I play the CD with another program (windows Media Player, etc.) everything is fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime, removed plugins, enable Maximum Audio Hardware Acceleration and done just about every other suggestion I have come across. I did try to reinstall an earlier version of iTunes but then it said that my music library couldn't be used because it is connected to a later version of iTunes. Is this a problem with itunes 7? Can I install an earlier version? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I currently have the iphone 5 and my software has been udpated to 6.1.4. But the issue I am having is that, when I'm running or working out, my music would sound distorted and skips. This is the only time it happens. Any suggestions or ways to resolve this? Thank you so much!

Hi, I have the same issue, on MP3 and AAC almost can't notice, but using HE-AAC its very noisy.
My wife use the Ipod Nano (with touch) and the same song (excatly same source, because I shared the folder between different users on the computer) and the music plays perfectly.
ps.: I have tested using the same song, from same source and same compression and also the same earphones (that came with my ipod classic)
Its software a bug or hardware?

  • Songs have begun stuttering and skipping

I have a problem that predates my recent Windows 7 install. I have many, many songs that have begun to repeat the first few seconds two or three times before commencing, slightly skipping beats etc.
It's almost as if the first few seconds have been duplicated and tacked on to the beginning of the file. This problem persists across computers, operating systems, devices and player software.
My experience with corrupt files is that they simply don't work, and I cannot understand what condition would cause part of a file to be resaved at the start of the file.
I have a library of 12,000 songs, for many of which I do not have physical media, so simply reburning the library isn't an option (even if I had the time).
I'm not sure there's any solution to the problem .. I may just have to try to whack the moles as they come up. But I'd really like to see if anyone has any ideas as to why this has happened and, more importantly, how to avoid it happening again in the future.
    Thanks.

I had the same issue after I completed my upgrade from Vista SP2 to Windows 7, I have 10,000 songs which I also have backed up so the upgrade was flawless and the problem only stated after the install. What I experienced was skipping accross all of my library and it appreared after I was running my machine and other applications. HP would not assist but I actually went based on a recommendation to upgrade my NVIDA drives and checked also sound drivers, video and did find an upgrade dated 2010 by NVIDA (check your version) and when I rebooted so far so good....no skipping.
