Noise Reduction in FCP

Dear Apple Forum Users,
How can I reduce the humming and hissing that comes along with low quality audio recording, without having to got to sound track pro.
I see a gang of audio filters in FCP. Would you recommend any of these for reducing less than desirable humming and hissing?

  • How do I permanantly apply audio noise reduction in FCP X

I have a clip shot on a blue screen set that had some noise in the background (constant hum from air conditioner). The Background Noise Reduction in FCP X, applied at 100%, does a truly amazing job. But there is one huge problem. It appears that FCP X "learns" as the clip is played, perhaps taking it's own noise print of the background noise, and applying it on the fly. Because for every clip I apply 100% background noise reduction to, that clip begins playing and you hear the full audio with noise. After a few seconds the backgroun noise begins to fade away. After playing for about 5 seconds, the background noise is completely gone. And it's freaking amazing. Better than what I've ever been able to accomplish with Soundsoap or other programs. But the fact that it must do this on the fly each time means it is unusable to me. I can't have each clip in my timeline start with noise, then have the noise drop out after a few seconds. Is this a bug? Am I doing this wrong? There are really no settings. You either have Background Noise Reduction on or off and set your percentages.
I am fixing audio on a 1 hour program. Really need this to work. Anyone else having the same problem, or found a solution? Or know what I might be doing wrong?

Does this mean you actually like the audio to sound as though it was recorded under water? I guess it depends on the amount of noise that requires removing, but I've never been able to tolerate more than about 40% before the audio gets horribly distorted.
I really don't share your experience of FCP X removing background noise 'on the fly' (sorry).

  • Is There A Noise Reduction Plug-in For FCP?

Wondering if I could find a plug-in for FCP5 or Color that will reduce the noise shot with high ISO in low light. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks!

I have found the 'Noise Reduction' in the CHV repair collection for FCP to be the best out of anything that I have ever tried. The noise reduction is fantastic and the sharpness loss is the best out everything I have seen.

The default settings can be a little excessive, I almost always end up with a setting of 10 and 15 regardless of the footage.
Also, you can try grain reduction inside of colour - pair it with a vignette and alpha blend to limit it to specific areas.

  • Noise Reduction/ Integrating into FCP Workflow

Why does STP render out the entire masterclip when I'm processing only a few seconds of that for noise reduction?
So let's say I'm happy with STP rendering out that entire 20 minute masterclip of audio, then why doesn't STP/FCP then reflect the noise reduction on other clips in the FCP timeline taken from the same masterclip???

    Bill-
You shouldn't be losing keywords just by virtue of running a batch in PS- double check the image's info after Export and before batch operation.
Next, make a PS action to do this. Then, from that have it make a droplet. Place droplet in LR folder for such, then make a custom Export preset in LR that calls in the droplet at the end of the choices. (Choose sRGB for your color space)

  • Is there a video noise reduction facility on final cut pro x?

İs there a video noise reduction facility or plugin on final cut pro x?

I appreciate this is an old thread and things have moved on but...
I have just been given a whole load of GoPro footage to work with that is very noisey (video noise) and needs some work.
FCP X still doesn't seem to like 'Neat Video' which works well (at times) but apart from the hang-ups takes a lifetime to render. The 'FxFactory' module isn't really doing it for me... Has anyone tried the 'Pixel Studios' plug in contained in their ProLens offering?
    Thanks

  • Neato Video Noise Reduction Filter

    Merry Xmas
A fellow filmmmaker has used the 'Neato Video Noise' plug in with pretty good success. Was wondering if anyone else out there has tried it?
I have some underexposed footage shot on a DVX100, (low daylight footage), which I tried tweaking with the FCP HSL Filter. But as you may know, the HSL Filter must be used carefully (sparingly), or it will cause grain.
Anyone know if Neato's Noise Reduction Filter works more efficiently?

No, there are no built-in noise reduction filters.
There are a number of free and commercial solutions out there ... the free ones are obviously worth checking out but less capable (try TMTS Noise Reduction and Smart Noise Reduction), of the commercial filters http://www.neatvideo.com/ and http://www.revisionfx.com/products/denoise/ seem popular.

  • Noise reduction problems LR3.4

I have some problems with the noise reduction.
    1. When watching photos in library mode the noise reduction is not working. Switching to development shows the correct image with nr removed.
    2. When using the brush (reducing exposure on face) on an image the complete NR for this image isn't  working. As soon when the brush is removed everything is fine!!!

    Hi
You can't really do effective and selective (that's what you want) audio editing with FCP filters. But if you HAVE to, you can use the following filters (not sure if they are all in version 4.5):
    Hum remover
    compressor
    equalizer (3band)
Sound editing is an art, and may take a while to get the best filter settings and combination. Good luck.

  • Noise reduction filter???

Does anyone know of a high quality FCP-compatible video noise reduction filter for HD footage? Is there even such a thing?

All of the software that works with this does this... soften the picture.
The controls are precise however, and I've used it with really low light footage to advantage.
Denoise is a video noise reduction filter plugin for FCP google it... render is awfully slooooooo. Color renders faster. free download of demo with big red x thru all footage I think. Lots more controls.

  • Noise reduction on track1 using noise print from track2

I have an audio track from a video project that was recorded on track1 that has a lot of interference from the wirelss mic that was so strong that it crossed over to the idle track2. Track1 has the voice and interference intermixed. Track2 just has the interference. How can I take a noise print from track2 and use it to reduce the corresponding noise on track1? Any ideas?

In addition, to make the process more challenging, I am unable to get the audio in the edit frame to play at the same gain as in the multi-track frame. In edit mode I seem to be at a 0db gain whereas the multi-track is playing at over 12 to 20db.
I am also unclear how to get the changes back to Final Cut. When I go to File to save it I do not see a Save option that would transfer the edited audio back to the Final Cut Project.
For the additional items you mention:
    1. In your multi-track project, check your volume envelopes on the track, and check the level on your submix and master. To do this, click the the disclosure triangle just left of the track name. You'll see in purple the envelopes section, which is like keyframes in FCP.
    2. You have to export a mix to send it back to FCP. Go to File -> Export, save the master mix with a file name, and most likely as an aiff file, then in the dropdown "After Export" choose "Send to Final Cut Pro Sequence."
For your noise reduction questions - applying noise reduction is for broadband, sustained noise, like an air conditioner or a hum. Are you trying to apply the same noise reduction to several files because they have the same type of background noise? I generally just save my settings, but set a new noise print for each file. I'll give you a quick step by step:
Select a bit in the file where there's JUST noise. Then go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Set Noise Print. Then select the entire file, and go to Process -> Noise Reduction -> Reduce Noise. When the noise reduction window comes up, you just need to listen and play with the settings until you're satisfied with how it sounds. As a starting point, take a look at the level of the noise alone, and use that as the threshold. Usually 100% noise reduction doesn't sound good, but you just have to use some trial and error. Too much sounds worse than too little, in my opinion. When satisfied, apply it and save the preset.
    Hope this helps!

  • Noise Reduction Filters????

Does anyone know of any effect audio filters in FCP-HD that will help reduce the amount of background noise in the clips?

For an "intelligent" noise reduction based on a noise print you need to go outside to Soundtrack or other audio apps.
Depending what the noise is, there's a lot you can do with multiple carefully set up Parametric EQ filters. If you have a very fine single frequency-based noise you can find the frequency with a Parametric EQ, then use it in "Hum Remover" to reduce the harmonics as well.
A different approach is to apply a noise gate.
Some combination of these, all used VERY GENTLY, can take the edge off most background noise and bring it down without too much damage to the sound you wanted.
I really really wish someone would make a noise reducer plugin that would work in FCP. I hate Soundtrack trips.

  • Best noise reduction?

mac 10.5.8 - FCP studio best noise reduction technique and/or plug in?
    thanks!
    A

Assuming you're asking about audio noise and not video noise, SoundTrack Pro has a nice noise reduction feature.  You have to set a 'noise print' of just the offending noise, then apply that print to the rest of the track.

  • Has anyone use the 'NeatVideo' noise reduction plugin?

Today I spend most of my time looking for a noise reduction technique in FCP and came across a couple of plugins.
    Noise reduction from Netvideo
    De Noise from Re-vision effects
Most of the people pick the plugin from Neatvideo because even after redction that grain and noise it re-tains the video quality but having said that it is very hign on the CPU usuage.
So I was wondering if anyone has given the full version a try on FCP?
    -A

Neat Video plug is great. Here's how I used it.
6 camera HDV 1080i 50, 100 min music shoot. Each Cam output was 2 x 50 min clips.
Half way through editing, I decided the HDV looked noisy because of a lot of low light footage, so tried the NV plug and got great results on a couple of clips. So I decided to process all the original Cam output and then substitute the files using FCPs reconnect process(just as I did with my photo-jpeg multi-clip footage) AND de-interlace at the same time.
Create Prores 422 sequence for each original cam clip in one FCP Project - 12 sequences.
Drag a HDV clip into each Sequence.
Drag the Nattress de-interlace plug onto each clip in each sequence and then the Neat Video Reduce Noise lug
Create the Device Noise Profile(which is actually the clip noise profile in my case) and add just a touch of sharpening in the Noise Filter Settings.
Select all the sequences in the browser and batch export them all as a quicktime movies.
Here's the sting in the tail - I then went on location for a month leaving the Mac Intel 8 core 3GHz on an uninterruptible power supply, to process it all.
When I returned it had taken 3 and a half weeks but looked very good. Luckily I'm away often!

  • Noise reduction on almost chroma key edges

I have a footage of a person in a white tee shirt in front of a very intense bright yellow backgroung (It looks like a chroma-key).
On the edges of the person and specialy on the edges of the white tee shirts (that is a over-exposed) there is some noise / artefacts.
I desaturated in FCP with the 3 way filter for the yellow to get less intense.
I checked plugins sites like: Natress, CHV, Kurt Hennrich and revisionfx and they have noise reduction plugins.
But I was wandering if anyone knows what's the best plugin (or filter) for this kind of noisy / artefact edges problem ?
Also, is there any setting in Compressor that could help to reduce this ?
I filmed on DVCAM NTSC, and this is for a DVD (replications).
    Thanks.

Wow, you've got a bunch of problems here starting with your camera of choice which I'm assuming since it was DVCAM, was something like a PD150/170, the choice of video format which is extremely compressed, the exposure.
I think your main issue stems from video format and exposure, however. Depending upon the camera model, you probably should dial down your chroma settings and for something like this, I may have been inclined to under-expose a bit.
There is a very good reason that good lenses cost as much as cars or houses. Cheap cameras with cheap lensing exhibit a bit of chromatic aberration which you've also got going on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberration
Your best solution would be to reshoot with a more robust video format if possible. You can try creating an edge matte for the yellow background and applying a light blur/defocus to the edge matte.
If Goggi comes up with a suitable solution be sure to post the details for future readers.

  • Noise Reduction wont apply to track

I am having a rather difficult time getting a audio track i have sent from FCP to play nicely in soundtrack. I sent the audio file from FCP as a audio file project, it opens up, i set my noise print, and adjust the reduction accordingly. Then once i try to apply the effect it will act as if the reduction action was applied but it doesn't actually apply to the track. I did select the area i wanted it to affect and i get nothing. I tried to save the reduction as a Script and apply it to the track in FCP and i end up with the same result. The part that is confusing me the most is if i select the Reduce Noise from the action list and play the track through the reduction hud it plays correctly it just wont apply to the track. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I am running SoundTrack 2.0.2 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5

Hmm, this might sound obvious, but did you "Save" the audio file project after applying the noise reduction filter? You have to save the project before it will update in FCP. Also, after you apply the filter to the file, the noise reduction should show up in the actions list, before you save and flatten the project.

  • Vocal Irregularity after applying Noise Reduction

In this new project I followed Bob Howes instruction:
‘Set the FFT size (on the advanced menu) to 2048 and grab a noise print from a gap of "silence".  Select the entire filed and do reduction by 7 or 8 dB and 15%ish reduction.  Set the FFT size to the next one up, get a new noise print and do another pass with the same low settings.  Keep going, upping the FFT size each time.’
This new project I started out first with a Hard Limit. Then I followed Bob's advise with managing by steps the FFT size.
Sample One is a piece of the original.
Sample Two is the results of the effects.
It sounds as though the speed of the vocals did changed - though one can listen to the vocal their conversation sounds - unnatural.
After removing noise is there another approach to redeem the vocals of those speaking?
    Thanks!

Yes, you have very much overdone the Noise Reduction!
First, I'm not sure why you would need to first apply a "Hard Limit".
Second, are you sure you followed Bob's advice exactly, i.e taking a new noise sample and changing the FFT size on each pass?  Are you sure you set everything exactly correct on that first pass?
