Noisy images in preview on Mac OS X Yosemite

I recently downloaded the Yosemite OS and since have had some trouble with it.  First off, when you want to preview an image in any folder with the spacebar option, the image is noisy and it takes a whole while for the image to be displayed clear.
Secondly, if you right click an image and choose "open with" it loads and says "fetching".  You have to re-click the image before it shows you a list of programs you can open the image with - this was never an issue with the previous OS's
Thirdly, it does not want to write on DVD's.  You can load the DVD, upload the documents you want burned on the disc, click on the burn icon but nothing happens.
Frustrated and want to move back to Mavericks!

I too have the issue of trying to open a file choosing "open file with" and having to deal with "fetching"...it just takes too long and it seems a step backward for doing something as simple as opening a file. I hope the Apple team will do something about it cos I am not loving Yosemite as much as I thought as I would.

  • Holding/lacking frames when Ram Preview. Mac OS X Yosemite

Do anyone know if Adobe is looking into fixing the problem with RAM preview your timeline in After Effects. That is lacking/holding/skipping frames the first 15-30 frames, and you have to run it once to the end, to see the beginning. It's really an issue for your work flow, and even more annoying when you have clients sitting next to you?
I checked with several other people too, just in case I might be my computer, but they have the same issue too.
Adobe wrote this" Adobe and Apple have worked closely together to test Adobe Creative Cloud applications for reliability, performance, and user experience when installed on Intel-based systems running Mac OS X Yosemite (version 10.10). " which seems like they might have missed this one?
If someone have a solution please let me know.
    Best,
    Kasper

It is an Apple bug. We have a fix to work around this bug in development, and we intend to release a version of After Effects with this fix this spring.

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!

  • PDF images visible in Adobe but not Preview or Mac Mail's Quick Look

I have a PDF that I am inserting an ad into. I copy and paste the ad from one PDF into another. The problem I am having is when I have the final 10-page PDF with the ad inserted in it, you can open the 10-page PDF in adobe and the ad will be visible, but if you open it in Preview or using Mac Mail's Quick Look, the ad isn't there. When I open the original file with the ad in it (that I copied and pasted the ad from) in Quick Look or Preview, the ad appears. I need to know why the ad isn't showing up after it is copy and pasted into a new PDF?
files can be viewed below or at this address:
    http://6letters.com/help/
"lanai3_Grand Jewels-001Winning.pdf" is the document I am copying the ad from
"lanai_122211.pdf" is the document I am pasting the ad into. The ad is on page 10. The ad is viewable in Adobe Acrobat but not in Preview or Mac Mail's Quick Look.
I am using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 (version 9.4.6) to do the copy/paste/save.
I just clicked the above link and the ad doesn't show up online now either. It is supposed to be in the blank space on page 10.
    Any help much appreciated!!!!!!

    Hi,
Acrobat 9 and older versions paste images as a stamp/comment which (that poorly functional) Preview cannot see, so you need to "flatten" the page if you want to see a pasted picture in Preview.
(Preview, Mail and QuickLook shares the same rendering library)
You can easily flatten one or several pages in a PDF using this free tools: http://abracadabrapdf.net/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=717

  • Canon MP560 no longer recognized by Image Capture/Preview

I have a Canon MP560 wireless printer/scanner and for some reason the scanner can no longer be seen by either Image Capture, Preview, or the Canon mp560 scanner toolbox under the Print menu. This happened either after installing 10.6.5 or after installing the latest Canon Printer Driver updates (I am not sure which caused it, as I did both updates recently...)
It can, however, be seen by MP Navigator 3.0.
Anyone found a fix for this yet?
    thanks

Okay, have done some testing and found some interesting things.
With a new install of 10.6.5 (selecting not to add any printers) I was not able to locate any Canon AIO via wireless. The Default Add Printer pane was empty so it looks like the printer and scanner driver needs to be present on the Mac. For the printer this is understood, as the Canon protocol 'canonijnetwork' is not present in the BJPrinters folder located in Library > Printers > Canon (due to the customized installation the Canon folder was not even present). In checking the Image Capture folder (HD > Library) I also found that the Devices folder was missing. Inside of here you would normally find the Canon IJScanner package/s for a standard installation of 10.6. But with the customized install this package was not present and appears to influence the Mac's ability to 'see' the networked scanner component. To confirm this, I installed the Canon v2.4.1 driver update, which in turn created the Devices folder in Image Capture and consequently made the scanner component appear in the Default Add Printer view.
Another observation was that prior to installing the Canon v2.4.1 update, Image Capture would still display the MP on the network, but under the Shared menu - not the Devices menu. So even without the ICA driver installed nor the MP scanner driver installed, I was still able to use Image Capture to scan a document from the wireless MP. The same was true for Preview in as far as the Networked Scanner selection showed all the MP's present on the wireless network.
At this stage I believe that the Canon driver update you mentioned may have contributed to part, if not all, of your current symptom. The install.log does have a record of what this update installs. If you checked it there may be record of the installer not completing correctly. In any case I assume that for your Mac this update did not complete correctly and is causing the problem. So one suggestion would be to run the [Canon Driver v2.4.1 update|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899] again (or for the first time if you simply used Software Update previously) to see if this repairs the CanonIJScanner packages.

Found another solution that worked for me, which did not involve going into terminal:
    Open Finder
Click on GO in menu and a list box drops down
Press the ALT key (This will show the Library folder int he drop down list box that appeared)
Click LIBRARY which opens another list of folders
Click CONTAINERS which will open the container folder and should show a Textedit and Preview folder.
    DELETE both these folders
    And that's it!!

  • Viewing PC-generated pdfs in Preview for Mac

I have a pdf that I generated on a PC (Windows 7, using Acrobat 9). The front cover includes an image that was previously pdf'd then inserted as a cover graphic. When viewed using Acrobat Reader, everything looks fine both on a PC and a Mac. However, when viewed on a Mac using Preview for Mac, there are lines through the cover graphic.
Has anyone else come across problems viewing PC-generated pdfs in Preview for Mac?

I always find that Preview can garble certain graphic elements or even slightly alter the over-all color of the PDF. However, I also find it is a lot quicker to deal with PDFs, especially when it comes to printing. Sometimes I get a PDF that I send to print on our Canon copier and I end up canceling the print job after 10-15 minutes because it's still processing. I open that same PDF in Preview and it prints in less than a minute. The same can be said of InDesign so on certain jobs I end up exporting as a PDF and printing from Preview. This might say a lot about Adobe's Printing Engine... (sorry, off-topic)

  • Pdf duplication in Preview for Mac behaving differently

When duplicating a PDF in Preview for Mac, a new image window would open that I could click on to select, then rename and save elsewhere. Just recently, seems like in the last few days, Preview now behaves differently. Now when I select duplicate, a duplicate document is created in the same window but shows as a thumbnail in the sidebar. This is confusing as it appears that Preview is trying to create a duplicate of the document at the end of the original. I don't appear to have received any updates from Apple that would account for this sudden change in behaviour (shows Preview last modified 18th November). I don't appear to be able to change this in Preview's Preferences. Can I revert Preview to the previous behaviour? (I'm using latest version of Preview in Yosemite on a 24" iMac).

  • Opening images in preview

In Windows computers when you double click an image to open it, you can look through all the images that are in the folder with the image viewer. However with Preview on Macs when I open an image it only shows that one.The only way for me to click on an image and be able to cycle through all of them in preview is if I highlight all images by pressing (command + A) and that way I can view them together in one preview window. Now this would be alright, excep for the fact that command + A and clicking will open all files I will often open documents and things that I don't want open.
So basically what I want to know is:
Can preview be set so when you double click one image you can view all image in the folder with the image viewe
Change the default image viewer if neccessary
Is what I am asking possible on Macs?

Well. Interesting results to report. In short, it doesn't work as I need it to, but shows promise.
    1) If I drop an image file on the target folder, it usually opens in Preview. If I drop another, Preview quickly closes, re-opens, and shows the new image. But in a test, one image in six consistently would not appear in Preview...right away. As much as 4-6 minutes later, the image might suddenly appear, along with others that failed to appear right away. Note: these images are jpegs of 200+ to 700kb in size.
    2) Something in the script is causing Preview to close every few minutes, then re-open, showing the same group of images. This happens without an image having just been added to the target folder.
    3) Both (1) and (2) suggest that the mechanism that loads these images into Preview is not actually responding to the added file, but only checks every so often to see if anything new has shown up.
    4) When I test the process using a digital camera and the EyeFi card, the results are worse: although the image file appears in the target folder within 3-5 seconds of being shot, it never opens in Preview right away, which makes the process unusable. In order to serve my purposes, it needs to appear in Preview within a couple of seconds of hitting the target folder. The image will not appear for at least 4 to 8 minutes of being added to the target folder.
This seems to be a harder goal to achieve than I had expected. Perhaps Preview is a poor application to use, but iPhoto was even less workable, last time I looked.
My instinct is that the script Pierre L. provided is awfully close to successful, but something is not allowing it to do what I need. Are there any users of EyeFi cards out there who can comment?

    Hi,
Please provide more information ... such as:
    - What are you trying to do? e.g. "Trying to import images from CF Card I get this message"
    - What PC are you using? e.g. "Mac, PC, memory etc"
It is quite a cryptic thread but it sounds like you are trying to import directly from a CF Card, if you are copy the images to the hard disk then import.

  • Cant see images in Preview only as thumbnails

I recently had my PBG4 17" in for apple care service. A new(I think) HD was installed with an upgrade to OSX3.9 from previous 2.8, everything seems to be working fine except for Preview. They (Apple store) did have to re-install my backed up data and now all my images that preview usually displays come up gray screen except when I open thumbnails then I see them. Can anyone help or should I take my PB back to Apple? Oh yeah and can you help me change the language when I open "About this Mac" under more info the specs are in German.(Deustch)

Hey, i checked the box "Open in 32-bit mode", and it totally solved the prob!
Thank you SO much, this has been driving ,me NUTS!!!!!
Can i ask you- what "mode" was it opening images in if not 32, and why would that option not work?
    thanks again! I love you!!!
Apple's programs default to 64bit mode in Snow Leopard. Mostly, this works pretty well, but there have been a few times where problems pop up. I'm sure that as the drivers, flash, and other programs mature, 64 bit will cause fewer problems.
I don't know why your version of Preview is having problems with 64bit because mine is not, but there may be other factors to consider that I'm not an expert on. I suppose you could experiment to see if the problem is with a preference (plist) file. They are located at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist or com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
If you move those two files to the desktop, uncheck the 32bit mode and the program works, then you've found the real problem. Changing the program to run in 32bit mode won't hurt, but it may just be hiding the problem instead of fixing it.
Eiher way, 32 bit mode should be ok for a program like Preview as 64bit mode's advantages of extra ram availability or other advantages won't be missed by today's Macs. As a rule of thumb though, many users are trying to get their systems to run just 64bit applications with the theory that all 64 will help keep the system more stable. We've still got changes coming to improve the situation, including upgrades by almost all 3rd party programs like MS Office or Adobe products. SL is very much a work in progress.
Glad the info helped you get some work done. Thanks for the

  • One image for multiple Intel Macs

I am trying to find some reference to creating one universal NetInstall image so that older Intel based portable Macs will work with newer portable Macs.
In the past we've been using a 10.5 retail image and update it as Apple updates come out. However, I notice using this image on the newer Macs with multi-touch creates some weird glitches.
The computer is functional, but an example would be, open Sys Prefs, click on Keyboard and Mouse, then when you click Trackpad, the animated video should show the finger(s) moving in the gestures for the correct command.
Anyone know of a place for best practices to create a universal NetInstall image so that I don't have to deal with multiple architectures for different installs? Any help would be appreciated.

best practice is to use the latest and greatest mac youve got for building the master image. however occassionally theres an odd glitch because of differences between the mac used for building the master image and the mac its restored to.
i rarely build on the latest and greatest mac ive got instead i use the mac that the image is going to be restored to. for this method i need to build many images however the chance of encountering an odd glitch is reduced.

You can't just resize an image using Preview.
Resizing an image will change its dimensions, but not the DPI/resolution.
Images on the Internet are usually at computer screen resolution of 72 DPI. Some images in the web might be at 150 DPI depending on the type of website it is.
Just resizing an image will make the image worst as you are only making the available pixels in the image larger and more spread out causing an even blurrier image.
You need an image editor that will increase the number of pixels in an image as you increase the size.
This is called interpolation. You are adding artificial pixels to an image to boost its DPI resolution.
These pixels are created from the surrounding existing pixels in an image.
Done correctly, you can get a pretty sharp image from a low DPI image.
Done incorrectly, you can make the image very ugly, blurry and look very out of focus.
You minimize this effect by  increasing the DPI of an image in small increments. I use 50 DPI increments.
Some users use even smaller DPI increments like 25 DPI or smaller.
I have a certain amount of impatience, so I use a larger upscale amount. I still get pretty good results that are more than just acceptable. Some user are just more particular about how much detail and sharpness they want their final image to be. I feel increasing the resolution of an image to 300-350 DPI using 50 DPI increments is a good compromise. My own user preference.

  • Tips for avoiding "noisy" images in low-light

    Hi all,
I noticed that there are a lot of users here who are complaining of noisy images especially in low-light. I'm not a professional photographer or anything but I have been playing a lot with the camera of my Xperia Z1 and I did have noisy images also at first.
Here is my tip: Use these settings:
    Go to Manual Mode.
Shoot in either 8MP 4:3 or 16:9 (don't worry about not making use of the 20MP, because its still doing oversampling to improve the quality of the 8MP image by making use of the whole 20MP sensor).
    Set Stabilizer to off
ISO to Auto (if you prefer more detailed images, set ISO to a lower value but take note of the exposure of the image and that there is a chance of motion blur due to the longer shutter speed necessary to capture low light at low ISO)
    WB Auto (or your preference).
With the setting I use above, I've seen improvements on low-light capability (indoors, artificial lighting, or night outdoor scene for example) and quality of my camera pictures. Note though that this will not be applicable for extreme low-light. Its very normal to capture really noisy images when shooting in extreme low-light (even my dedicated compact camera has troubles too).
Here is my theory why its taking noisy images by default. In Superior Auto, I analyzed the EXIF data of the pictures I've shot. It seems that Superior Auto is really excessive in bumping up the ISO (thus resulting in more noisy images) to compensate for having a faster shutter speed (reduced motion blur). Thus what you get is a noisy image that is bright and freezes the motion. For example, test it out that in Superior Auto, even minute movements of the phone will trigger the Sports Mode (running man icon near the button) prioritizing a faster shutter speed at the cost of a higher ISO.
Another reason I have for turning off the Stabilizer in Manual Mode is the same. In contrast to Steady Shot used in recording movies (sensor based shift to compensate for handshake movements), I think the Stabilizer option basically just bumps up the ISO also to compensate for handshake movements. I"m not entirely 100% sure but so far, I've been satisfied with taking images with the Stabilizer Off.
Please feel free to test it out and report the results if there have been improvements. I'm still testing it out too! One of the things I wish for Sony to put in the Camera App are just these 3 things:
1.) Holding Shutter Key will open the Camera app with the LAST CONFIGURED SETTINGS
2.) Maximum ISO can be set in Manual Mode
3.) Scene AUTO mode for Manual Mode (I know it might be redundant but it would be nice to have Auto mode for 4:3 orientation images).
Again, hope to hear from others what are their settings or if they notice any improvements in images captured.
    Thanks!
