NOISY MAC HINDERING VOICE OVER

Hi
I need to do a voice over on a video in a week or so. I have a G4 Tower - duel 1 Ghz (sometimes referred to as the 'wind tunnel' I believe). Meaning, it's a really noisy by todays standards.
I bought it new in 02, and it still works flawlessly - except for the fact it sounds like hair dryer running on a low setting.
At one time, Apple sent me a new power supply that is a little quieter, but still annoyingly loud.
So ... what is recommended to shut this thing up when doing a voice over? Do I need to get some sort of long extension for my 17 in monitor, and put it in another room with the mic - or stick pillows around the computer itself and stuff it in a closet?
Thanks!

I've actually done that (the pillows thing). Then I made a box with foam glued to the inside that I would set over it when I had to do a VO... annoying, but the cheap way out. They also make sound-proof, air-cooled cabinets...

  • Voice Over and continuous reading

    Hello,
Is there any way to get Voice Over to read a long document, such as a long web page, continuously from a starting position to the end of the document without user intervention? Windows screen readers do this via their read to end feature which automatically moves the cursor down the document reading as it goes, automatically scrolling as necessary. You can press Control at any time to stop the reading to explore an item at the current reading position in more detail, then later restart the continuous reading from your new position. This is extremely useful but I cannot fathum out a way to do this on the MAC using Voice Over.
I initially thought that vo+A would do the job, but alas no. At least in Safari it only reads the current paragraph. You then have to press vo+CursorDown to read the next paragraph wich is very tedious in a long document.
If there is no such function yet in Voice Over I would strongly urge Apple to add it in the future.
    Many thanks.

    Hello Paul,
Have you tried locking the VO keys? This won't make VO do what you want, but it does reduce the number of keystrokes required. Use VO-semicolon to lock the keys, then Shift-Page Down will read by paragraph, while Page Down reads by sentence. On a laptop, Page Down is fn-Down Arrow.
Alternatively, you could consider splashing out for Ghost Reader from ConvenienceWare. This provides a tape-recorder style interface, enabling you to play/pause, start/stop, fast forward and rewind on any text. You can buy it standalone or bundled with extra voices to vary your reading experience or increase the number of languages available to you.
A great many VO users have asked for the read-to-end feature, so it's likely to be provided quite soon.
    Hope this helps,
    Archie

  • I use Garageband 09 to record voice overs via podcasting, female narrator noisy, but keep getting an intermittent clicking sound. It's not the metronome. I have a good quality external USB mic plugged in. Any ideas?

I use GarageBand 09 to record voice overs via the Podcasting then Female Narrator Noisy utility. I have a good quality external mic plugged in. I keep getting an intermittent clicking sound on the audio track. It's not the metronome as that is turned off. I have to edit out the clicking after recording. I can see the spikes on the waveline. Any ideas how I can prevent this happening?

Hi again and thanks so much for replying.
The 'mic jack' on the old mic is both wide and large, measuring about an inch and a quarter from the base (where it comes out of the black encasing) to the edge of the tip (sort of cone shaped). As I can't plug this in directly to any port in the back of the Mac, I thought it might be possible to to buy some sort of adapter so that I could plug in the jack at one end, with a USB connector at the other end to go straight into the Mac. But I see from your comment that you are suggesting a smaller jack itself (i.e., large size jack to small size jack and then plug in to the small round port, instead of jack to USB port)?
At the Mac shop I bought a USB adapter to connect up a second monitor (screen). I've just dug out the package and it's called a mini display port to VGA adapter. But back to the mic issue, I don't want to use the old mic really, I'm just trying to eliminate whether or not my usual mic, or its USB cable, is at fault and causing the clicking.
I looked on Amazon for a suitable adapter but there was mention of these little gadgets having a sound card. As the Mac obviously has its own internal sound card, I couldn't see the point of another (exernal) one, unless it was actually required to convert the sound from input to output (playback) or something. One review said sound quality was lost but the person had a problem with his speakers, not a ticking sound while playing back recordings - which is obviously my problem.
I do have a headset that I used to use for Skype. It has a pink and a green jack. I could plug one into the "headphones symbol' port and try recording again with Garageband. At least the jack is the right size. Again, this is just for the purpose of eliminating whether my good mic on a stand with the anti-popping sheild is at fault.
While my Mac does have both inbuilt speakers (I don't need external ones) and an inbuilt microphone, the latter is not of a high enough quality for voice overs, hence buying an external mic etc. But whatever is causing the clicking or ticking is obviously affecting the quality of my recordings. As you can imagine, it is very time-consuming to edit out the ticking spikes and if the noise appears during speech, you can't edit it out at all.
Please keep the suggestions coming. I am determined to get to the bottom of this for my sake and everyone else who is suffering from the same problem!

  • MAC Voice Over: Why does the screen view lag behind the voice over audio?

    MAC Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
When using voice over on a MAC with DE 1.8 - most times when paging thru a pdf file/book the voice and the view are inconsistent.  When using VO -  moving to the next page with the right arrow key - the audio starts to read the next page (correct), but the display is one page behind (not correct).  For readers - especially those that have significant visual impairment  - this will not work for them.  Is this a defect - and if so - I would be very happy to re-test this feature if a new revision of DE 1.8 is provided.
I am unsure this is the correct forum to raise issues such as this one.  I am in the process of evaluating Adobe DE 1.8 - my sister is blind and I am trying to move her to a MAC with VO.  I really appreciate Adobe's effort in supporting JAWS and MAC VO - thank you on behalf of all disabled folks out there.
Below is a detailed list of steps to re-produce this audio/screen inconsistency issue.
    - Install DE 1.8 and add to the dock
    - Add a pdf file/book to DE 1.8.  For my issue, I am adding the "Voice Over Getting Started" guide.
    - Turn on Voice Over - Cmd+F5
    - Using VO - Go to the dock and select DE and start it.  The "Last Read Book" typically is the focus for the VO cursor.  Then using VO next item (VO+right arrow) - move the VO cursor to "Library Content Table".  This is the list of books that are displayed in DE.
    - Using the up/down keyboard arrows - move up and down thru the books in the content list.  At this point - you should already see that the VO audio announcing the title of a book is not synchronized with the row in the table that is displayed.  The voice is announcing a book that you selected, but the display is showing the previous book.
    - Once you hear (not see) the book you want to test with, hit <enter>.  DE will open the book and start to read using VO.  At this point the screen and audio for the first page in the book are the same.
    - Once the book has been opened by DE - Using the right arrow key navigate to the next page in the pdf/book.  Normally the right arrow key is the short cut to allow a user to move forward or backwards thru a book, one page at a time.
    - With DE and VO - what happens is that VO responds to the right arrow key and starts to read the next page.  But the screen is still showing the previous page.  Hence the screen and the VO audio are out of sync.
    - For anyone that uses MAC VO - this will prevent them from using Adobe DE 1.8.
If I am doing something incorrect - please let me know. If you need any assistance or further information regarding this issue - please email me.
    Best Regards
    Mike R

    hi, Mike R:
Thanks for your information. We have tested several Mac machines, iMac and MBP (use the same version as yours). But we can't reproduce the issue. Actually working with VoiceOver is a fundamental request for our application, we did test them before releasing the build.
We suggest you test other applications, e.g. Finder, Preview and iTunes, to make sure if VoiceOver works fine with them. Or can you please check if your VoiceOver settings are correct?

how to turn off voice over command in mac book pro 10.6.8

Open Universal Access preferences and disable it there.

  • Mac Book Air, cannot exit Voice Over at initial start up

New Mac Book Air; initial power-up; selected English language; 'Welcome' screen defaults to 'United States'; cannot manually 'Continue' to register and set up; 'esc' results in starting the Voice Over tutorial; 'Command+F5' results in seeing/hearing 'Voice Over off'...can't get past this 'loop'.
    Ideas???

I think your issue here is the combo of Lion on the air and the TC on latest firmware.
There is a longish thread here exploring the problem. Start from the end and work backwards.. as we become more intelligent as we try different solutions.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526741?tstart=0
But you should ring apple support and get them working on it.. perhaps they already know of it and have a work around.. this is definitely a bug and lack of adequate testing to leave you in this situation.
I would say if you need to work through it yourself.. go back to 7.5.2 firmware if you are on 7.6.. just hold down the options key when you go to the top menu upload firmware, and the older versions will be listed.
Try with that, if not enough we might think through some more..
Your issue maybe more serious as most people are not losing internet just connection to the AFP share of the hard disk. Do you have another computer to plug into the TC by cable and see if you can check the logs and the TC wireless clients info?

  • Is mac voice over compatilbe with pro tools 10?

I have a new 17inch macbook pro with Liion, and I just purchased adn installed Avid Pro Tools 10.  I'm wondering if Voice Over is compatible with Pro Tools 10.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If your Mac shipped with 10.5.2, no.
If your Mac shipped with an older operating system, it depends.
According to http://www.digidesign.com/ you need a Mac with Tiger to run Protools LE. Check with them which version of Tiger it will work with.
Then check this article to see if your Mac can run that version of Tiger:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
If it can't, sell your Mac, and get a used or refurbished one which can.
Once you know your Mac can run that version of Tiger, if it is an Intel Mac, make sure you have the original Tiger installer which shipped with the Mac, as the retail Tiger installer will not work on the Intel Macs. Once you have discovered which version of Tiger works, backup your data at least twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
and Erase and Install Tiger on your Mac. Archive and Installing Tiger over Leopard does not work. Your other option is to get a Firewire external hard drive and install Tiger on that. http://www.macsales.com/ sells such hard drives. You can also partition your existing hard drive to have both Tiger and Leopard on it by erasing it with your Leopard Disk Utility and using its Partition function when booted off the Leopard installer, and selecting Disk Utility from the Utilities menu of the Leopard installer. Restore your documents to your hard drive from the backup when done. Applications may need to be reinstalled after an erase and install using the registration codes of the said applications.
See my FAQ* here on how to buy used and refurbished Macs:
    http://www.macmaps.com/usedrefurbished.html
And in the future always check the compatibility of the software you need before upgrading your operating system.

Just bought a Mac book and the set up is with the Voice over key commands, how do you switch this off as it is painfull to use and use the scroll pad?

It's the button (key) that is labelled Control.
Each of the modifier keys and similar keys has its own symbol; this makes listing command keys easier to do. The Command key is usually the only key which has its symbol printed on the key. If you open Keyboard Viewer (in the Input menu, the one which displays the flag in the main menu bar), you can see what symbol refers to which key.

  • What is the difference between Macs Voice Over and the text to talk feature

what is the difference between Macs Voice Over and the text to talk feature

Voice Over doesn't need someone to type in the text first. Voice Over works with specific screen displayed information so that a blind person can know where his/her cursor is or what is being displayed. Although it is an application of text to talk it's more than the text to talk feature.

  • Horrible product , I have everything mac and this is my biggest disappointment. I have taken it in 3 times since march and again 1 week ago and now voice over even though turned off will not stop talking I can't even listen to music !!

i have reset everything and voice over still won't stop . Iv turned it off it has never been turned on .
THis his by far is the worst apple
product I own and I own over 7 different products Just me alone in my house there are numerous more .
i now for the fourth time since March have to bring the product back to apple and have it looked at . That's hours at times that I spend there due to lines , as a full time worker and student I do not appreciate the hassle of continuously having to fix this product . Lat time I went in I asked the service representative to provide another product and I would pay the difference in fees. She just wrote a note saying " if I come back again to to give a brand new product , less then one week later I'm returning with my product and hope to get what I was promised .
I Have never been so disappointed in an apple product and recommend no one ever buys it .  Invest in a different product .

I have the same question what time did you chat ? Just because you were speaking with someone that is representing Verizon does not mean you were speaking to a "Customer Service" agent. Customer service is only open during specific hours. After those hours the only people online is the Online Sales Department. It is very possible you were chatting with the sales department.

  • External mic for voice overs

I am making a small instructional video in Final Cut Express HD and am to the point where I need to add some voice overs. I guess I could use the built-in mic, but would really like to have something a bit better. Any recommendations? Also, would the mic plug into the line-in port or would it be USB? Thanks.

I've tried a variety of things and ended up doing this--buying a good quality sanyo digital voice recorder and good karoake mic--record the vo seperately--import with itunes--then import to fce timeline and cut\paste
dialogue exactly where i want--sounds complicated but it gives me precise control over timing with video and other audio files--importing with mac built in mic was tinny and noisy--mic into mac no better as mac fan motor generated low hum--doing it this way i could completely isolate myself from external noise(quiet room)and have added advantage of a small portable recording system--good luck
