Non Unix friendly characers and Xsan searches

from a project orginally digitized on firewire and moved to Xsan volume.... everything runs fine, except if you do a reconnect or a search for files with names like "a03/b02" it won't find them. Finder Search reveals the file on the Xsan as "a03:b02" BUT if you navigate a new finder window to that file, or even Locate with Final Cut, the file shows up as "a03/b02" and reconnects just fine.
This is only a problem sharing XML's between the guy with Firewire copy and the Xsan setup. XML's between Xsan clients have no reconnect issues.
Obviously we need to rename these files, I'm assuming the '/' is causing the problem. Any ideas for an easier fix?

This is similar to the behaviour the colon and slash characters have on HFS+ and most other local and network filesystems.
try the following to see this IRL:
open your home folder in the Finder
open a new Terminal session
create a new file by typing the following command in the Terminal:
touch firstTestFile
verify that firstTestFile shows up in the Terminal by typing:
ls -l
verify that firstTestFile shows up in the Finder
rename firstTestFile to first/TestFile in the Finder
type the following command in the Terminal
ls -l
notice that first/TestFile shows up as first:TestFile in the Terminal
try to rename first/TestFile to first:TestFile in the Finder
notice that the colon character is not allowed in the Finder
the colon is the character for folder structure separations on Mac OS systems since somebody at Apple decided it would be nice to have a filesystem that supports folders
the slash is used in UNIX systems since their first incarnations
For backwards compatibility with both ancestors the character is mapped hence and forth between the two different environments on local filesystems, Apple made a nice wrapper that does this invisible to the end user.
However, a likewise wrapper is not implemented in Xsan and one can either see this as a bug or a concession inherent to the way Xsan works. I personally don't have enough in-depth knowledge to know is the second is the case.
Maybe someone deeply involved in Xsan can enlighten us?
Or maybe you could file it as a Xsan bug to bugreport.apple.com if you have a developer account and see from the feedback if this is normal behaviour or an unimplemented feature.
If it is normal behaviour for Xsan, you should file it as a bug report for Final Cut Pro, if Xsan is not expected to translate these characters, translation should be implemented at the application level.
Of course you can just decide not to use colons or slashes in filename, which imho is a good idea anyway..

That is absolutely impossible. Siri requires an iPhone 4S or later.
if your friend really does have Siri working on an earlier iPhone, it was in fact jailbroken, and you will get no help from this forum at all.

Ipod video (early '06 vs late '06) and the search feature

I purchased the 5th generation video ipod in August of 2006 and have just noticed with my friends video ipod (late 2006) that there is this new search option under the music section (after audiobooks). Now I remember that when this suffle song feature came out in one of the updaters for the earlier ipods (such as 2nd and 3rd) both were able to get this feature. I am not sure if I am just having problems getting the new software updater to fully update my ipod but why would the non-late 2006 version have this search feature and not allow the earlier video to have it. I mean they are keeping them under the same 5th generation category. Not sure if anyone would be able to answer this or if it made sense but would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks.

My drop-down list won't appear anymore so every time I want to go to a new site I have to type it in where before my drop-down box would appear and I could just click it and hit search and go there how do I make my drop-down box come back

somehow I must've clicked a button that took away my drop down box when I go to use my Google search so different sites that I go to a lot I would always just click it when the drop-down box came up I would click again and hit search and you would bring that page up but even if I go to a site once I leave that I try to click and make the drop-down box come up again with the new search and it nothing happens so the problem is I need my drop down box to come back up to all the places that I visit kind of like a history of like I said I would just click and it would come up by itself now the drop-down box won't come up anymore so I need somebody to tell me what to do to bring my drop-down box back also I am new to computers so I don't know a lot so don't be real technical thanks for the help merry Christmas from Joe

It's not a matter of me assuming to restore it, once the error comes up, the only next step I can do is to restore it. I can't access any of the iphones settings in itunes or anything, it's a mandatory restore. If I just cancel the sync (before restoring) and disconnect the phone, all my apps crash on opening: aka unusable phone. So I have literally no choice but to restore every time the error shows up if I want my phone to work.
I have no idea where I may have duplicate files as it doesn't tell me, so if that is the problem (which I don't think it is) then I don't know where I have to go to delete the duplicates.
And the duplicate file error still doesn't explain why leaving iTunes to restore the phone doesn't work and me having to drag the window around. I know it sounds utterly ridiculous, my friend didn't believe me when I told him either but then I showed him and he was as confused as I am. If I just leave the restore to do its own thing at it's own pace, it will loa maybe 20% then fail for whatever reason.

Lost IP address on G5 w/ OS X server 1.4 and XSAN 1.3

I attempted to change the DHCP setting via Chicken of the VNC on a G5 loaded with OS X 1.4 and Xsan 1.3 and now am unable to determine what the IP address is. I had my network manager revert the port to a set IP range and sniffed that with Ethereal with no luck. I can start the G5 with firm ware control so that is shows up via firewire on my ibook laptop as two server HDs but is there a way to determine its IP from searching the server HDs or is there another way to get full access to the server via firewire. I guess what would be ideal is if there is a way to fully manage the G5 over firewire. I am pretty new at this so any help would be appreciated even if it seems painfully obvious to you all.

Until yesterday I could text to non-Apple friends from both my iPhone 5S (iOS 8.1.2) and my iPad Air 2 (iOS 8.1.2). Then for several hours last nothing was deliverable unless to another iPhone or iPad. Today, once again, I can text to non-Apple friends from my iPhone but not my iPad. On the iPhone there are buttons for MMS & SMS messaging, but not on the iPad. What happened?

I was having this problem today with my 6 plus and my air 2. Additionally, I kept getting the message that iMessage needed to be turned on to send my messages. It was turned on in both devices. I wonder if there was a problem at Apple. My carrier is t-mobile, perhaps there could be a problem there.

Help with AND/OR Search

I'm setting up an 'Advanced Search' feature using a filter function and need some help with the logic - seem to be suffering a brain fade...
There's a search form with (let's say) 4 different options: Name, Description, Price, Features.
I want the user to be able to fill in all or none of the fields and return the matching results.
I can do an OR function like this:
if(Name.match(regx1) || Description.match(regx2) || Price .match(regx3) )|| Features .match(regx4){
     return true;
}else{
     return false;
I know I could change the "||" to "&&" - but I need to do this only if there's something to search...
The only way I can think of doing this at the moment is to write a bunch of 'if statements' with all permutations - eg:
if(Name && !Description && !Price && !Features){
     //match Name only
}else if(Name && Description && !Price && !Features){
     //match Name & Description
}else... you get the idea

From what I understand, 'criteria' should remain true only if the comparator is true. But why do I get a compile error?

Missing address and google search space

Hi, all -
Well, I must have hit a strange key combo. I have lost the address and google search "buttons" on the safari address bar. Safari works, I just can't navigate to non-bookmarked areas.
What's the simplest solution? I tried downloading a new safari, and it says I don't have the right OS, but my OS is newer than what is required. I found "com.apple.safari.plist" and got it on my desktop, but couldn't make anything happen, and now I don't know where to go to put it back where it belongs.

Hi, we would like to monitor our few Linux devices with SCOM 2012 R2. The OS counters are working well, but we are running on Linux the applications nginx, Varnish Cache and Elastic Search from which we need the performance counters as well. Are there any
Management Packs available to read the data from these applications?

I'm not aware of any pre-built management packs for the applications you have listed.
While you could build your own management packs using OpsMgr's management pack authoring capabilities, if your monitoring needs are fairly straightforward, you could create some shell scripts to retrieve the information you want (for both health and/or performance),
and then use the Linux/UNIX script monitoring wizard in the OpsMgr console to create the monitors you want. Creating the monitors/rules is super-easy once you have the shell scripts.

It won't. iMessage isn't an SMS service. It's for Apple-to-Apple and uses cellular data. SMS uses a cellular SMS plan, which does not come with your iPad. You'd have to have a cell phone to send texts like that. Alternatively, you can find an instant messaging app like Skype (they do messaging, not just video chat) or MSN Messenger that goes across platforms. You install it, they install it, you can chat with them.

I encountered an error in the Payment Wizard screen as I was creating an Outgoing Payment for petty cash expenses. On the “Recommendation Report” screen, I clicked “Non-Included Trans.” and saw that one of the vendors (Vendor Code: WILCO) has the following error:
“The document amount is greater than the max. amount allowed in the payment methods linked to the BP”
Upon checking, the “PCF-W” Payment Method linked to WILCO does not have any restrictions, nor does WILCO have any credit/commitment limit set. I have also appropriately defined the Dummy Business Partner Bank (under Payment Terms) as well as checked the “Included” box for PCF-W on the Payment Run-Payment Methods screen.
Could anyone please help me on this?

PS - have found other posts indicating that clips smaller than 2s or sometimes 5s, or "short files" can cause this. Modern style editing often uses short takes ! Good grief I cannot believe Apple. Well I deleted a half a dozen short sections and can export, but now of course the video is a ruined piiece of junk and I need to re-do the whole thing, the sound etc. which is basically taking as much time as the original. And each time I re-do it I risk again this lovely error -50 and again trying to figure out what thing bugs it via trial and error instead of a REASONABLE ERROR MESSAGE POINTING TO THE CLIP IT CAN'T PROCESS. What a mess. I HATE this iMovie application - full of BUGS BUGS BUGS which Apple will not fix obviously, since I had this product for a few years and see just hundreds of hits on Google about this error with disappointed users. Such junk I cannot believe I paid money for it and Apple does not support it with fixes !!!

Remove Babylon Features:
Remove Toolbar (from Extensions)
1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Go to FF menu button.
2. Select Add-ons & than select Extensions. (delete excess text)
3. Remove/Disable the Babylon Toolbar 1.5.0.
4. Restart your browser.
Remove Toolbar (from Add/Remove Programs)
1. Click the Start button on your computer.
2. Select Add-ons & than select Extensions. (delete excess text)
3. Select Programs and Features.
4. Select Babylon Toolbar from the Programs list.
5. Right click to uninstall.
6. Press YES on the popup message.
Remove Search Provider
1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Click on the Search bar, located on the right side of your address bar
2. Press the F4 key and select Manage Search Engines from the drop down list that appears.
3. Select Search the Web (Babylon) and click on the Remove button.
4. Click OK to save your changes.

7. Now select the General tab.

Second, I work on a network of computers and the search feature is now buggy... When I search for a file, A) it asks me if it's a name, or it wont produce anything, and B), its slower than in prior OS versions and in some instances I have to toggle to a different directory and go back to my original directory in the search: menu bar or the search wont produce anything... Very buggy.

It appears to me that network file access is buggy in Maverick.
In my case I have a USB Drive attached to airport extreme (new model) and when I open folders on that drive they all appear empty. If I right click and I select get info after a few minutes! I get a list of the content.
It makes impossible navigate a directory tree.
File access has been trashed in Maverick.
They have improved (read broken) Finder. I need to manage a way to downgrade to Lion again.

How to create a Windows 8.1 Desktop icon from the Metro/Start and/or Search Tool?

I'm a Desktop user, but often find myself needing to go to the Metro/Start and Search Tool to find programs and App(let)s in order to run them. However, after doing this several times for many programs, I find myself wanting to create
Desktop icons to run the programs more easily. Is there a way to do this from the Metro/Start Icon and/or Search Tool results?
If not, Microsoft, please consider adding the ability to do this.
It would be very nice if this ability supported all of the icon types shown in the Metro/Start, Search Tool, and Control Panel interfaces, e.g.: Metro Apps, Desktop Programs, Charms, and Control Panel Applets.
Currently, there is a way to pin the Metro/Start Icon to the Desktop, but the Taskbar will get very cluttered with even only a handful icons.
It would be very nice if the desktop icon created by this also supported the context options that the program/app(let) now shows as Tasks when the icon is pinned to the Desktop Taskbar.
Additionally, it would be nice if I could also simply drag a Pinned Taskbar icon onto the Desktop area, again, retaining it's Tasks as context menu options when the Desktop Taskbar icon is right clicked.
This ability would be very helpful for people needing to get to programs and App(let)s, without having to resort the Metro/Start and Search Tool, because when there are a lot of Metro/Start icons, I have well over a hundred icons, it
can be very hard to find one simply eye-balling lot. The Search feature is much better, provided I know the name to look for and can remember it.
Finally, this ability would be very helpful, because the kinds of desktop shortcut icons that I can create using the New Shortcut option, assuming that can I find the program/App(let)'s name and path information, do not support the context options
that the icons could in Windows 7 when an icon is created while installing the program.

No. purchases are forever tied to the apple ID used to buy them. Delete them and buy your own copies.
