[None] master page: margins questions (CS4ME)

Hello,
Does anyone know where the [None] master page gets its margins from? How can I change those margins?
Thank you,
Ariel

I don't get the behaviour. In a blank default document, hitting ctrl-shift-p adds a new page with [None] applied? Also, in my case I added running-heads to the A-Master. So for pages where no running-head was required I was applying None, only to realize later that the margins there were different. I think. Although applying None doesn't actually change the margins. Hmm.
And with scripting I'm not managing to access the [None] page: In other words, this:
app.activeDocument.masterSpreads[0].name
returns "A-Master"

  • Can the 100% browser width function be used in non-master pages?

    Can the 100% browser width function be used in non-master pages? I watched the video about pulling it to the red edges, and did that on some of my parent pages, but when I preview the page in browser, it doesn't work. I can still see my browser edges.
    The idea for the website I am designing is to have different full browser width images for different pages, and I'm looking for a way to do that. I would create a different master for each page, but there are more than 20 pages...too many master pages! Thanks!

    Hi Lindsey,
    The 100% width feature works with rectangles and text frames on both master pages as well as regular pages. It doesn't work with images in either case. A possible workaround would be to use a rectangle with a background image, depending on the nature of your image.

  • Page margins question:

    i'm trying to center my page, but it doesn't respond to
    changeing the margin-left. any suggestions why/how this could be
    true? code:
    import url("counselor_one_styles.css");
    body {
    background-color: #CCCCCC;
    margin-left: 75px;
    . . . .could this be stopped by something on my .css file?
    thanks.
    mike

    margin-left:75px will not center your page. It will make it
    appear 75px
    from the left-hand margin only. As the browser viewport width
    changes, this
    will look more and more off center to the left.
    > . . . .could this be stopped by something on my .css

    We'd have to see the page to say....

  • Insert Page Name in Master page

    Hello.
    I was wondering if there was an easy way to insert the page name inside a master page, something like indesign's variable ?
    If i want this exactly like the widgets (drag and drop a box, it places with editable attribute of pageitem::menu), i'm ok to type and paste some html.
    (I also wonder how to use the widgets.muse file to build my own, but that's another question i guess)

    Thanks, this sounds like just what I'm after. However…
    I feel pretty silly asking this, but I can't understand the Adobe Help files on overriding a master item.
    It lists a two step process:
    Make sure the master item can be overridden -this seems to be fine. After selecting the inserted File Name in the master I can see a tick next to Allow Master Item Overrides On Selection in the Pages panel menu.
    Override specific master items on a document page - this is where I get lost.
    Firstly I can't select the items on a regular (non-master) page. Am I meant to select them on the master page?
    Secondly the help file simply says "Change the selected master items as desired." How do I change them. There's no explicit instruction, and I can't for the life of me work it out.
    More generally (if this does happen on a master), do I need to make this change on every document in the book, or can I simply make the change on the Style Source and then synchronise the remaining files?

  • Applying master pages while typing

    I am running framemaker 7.0  (I realize it is a very old version). How do I force it to add a page based on a different master page that I have set up? Right now it adds the default (none).

    FrameMaker is supposed to automatically apply Left and Right master pages to new pages as they are needed in facing-page documents, or apply Right master pages in single-sided documents.
    Perhaps these troubleshooting steps can help identify the problem:
    Verify what master pageis actually applied to a body page by selecting a body page, zoom it up to fill the screen, then view the master pages. The active master page is the one applied to the body page you just left. If this procedure verifies that the None master page is being applied to new body pages, then either something is corrupted, or perhaps somebody has customized your FM installation to run a script, or perform some other action that applies None when new pages are added.
    Does None get applied in a brand-new document as pages are added? If yes, then again, FM may be corrupted, so you may need to run the Windows repair process on your FM installation (I'm a Mac guy, so I can't give details.) Or, you can try to uninstall and reinstall FM, but IIRC depending on which version of Acrobat is installed on the same system, there may be some conflict with the Distiller that FM installs. Others on this forum can advise you on these issues better than I can. Also search Google for terms like "repairing applications windows <name your version of windows>" without quotes, for details.
    Open another new file, and see if None get applied when you perform File > Import > Formats (select all formats) from the troublesome file, then add pages. If this new file applies Right then Left, then the FM installation is probably OK, and the problem document may be corrupted.
    A MIF wash run on a copy of the problem document may clear the corruption. Search Google for terms like: FrameMaker "mif wash" (note the quotes around mif wash - they focus the search.)

  • Basic working/Master Page questions

    Beginner - creating 80 pg catalog in ID -
    I'm a little confused with using  ID master pages and don't have time to go through a lot of tutorials at the moment. I created a new doc with 4 master pages (all spreads) to use at will throughout, intending to swap out text and images in page layout mode once the master pages are dragged down into the page layouts section of the palette.
    After dragging pages from the Master Pages section down into pages palette, creating new spreads, the page layouts can't use any of the elements until I select them and then choose Override Master Page Items? So none of the text formatting/picture boxes/elements are ready to use by default? I don't get it … master pages are by default meant to be background elements only?
    Switching from Quark, where all Master Page elements are ready to swap in text and images after dragging them into the page layout panel. How to best accomplish having the Master page elements immediately available for use in page layouts? Template?
    LMK if I need to provide more info...
    ID 6/CS4  Macos10.6.8

    Master objects in ID are not like they are in Quark. If they have content in them you must override them before you can alter them. Empty master frames can receive content via File > Place... without overriding. You can override any master object by holding Cmd + Shift and left click on it.
    The general principle for using master objects in ID is if they need to be overridden to use them, you really need a darn good reason to put them on the master page at all since you defeat the purpose of having them on the master when you do that.

    You'd be much better served if you did spend some time training. You'll never get good at ID as long as you continue to think like a Quark user.

  • 2 Questions: Basic Shape / Go to Master Page

    Hi. My questions revolve around InDesign CS4 for Mac.
    Specs: PowerMac G5, 1.8Ghz, 4GB ram, 435GB hd, OSX 10.5.8, IDCS4, Suitcase Fusion 2 (if any of that matters).
    I have a basic shape question that is perplexing me. I'm a 12 year QuarkXPress user who converted to ID CS4 last year by choice (to gain the experience under employ) so there are things here and there that cause me confusion.
    In any case my question is this. How can I convert a rectangle frame to a perfect square frame?
    Specifically, if I drop in an image, and the frame is rectangular how can I make it a perfect square using keyboard shortcuts? I realize I can create a new frame and constrain proportions as I draw it to get a perfect square, then cut and then paste the image into that, or I can transform the frame by entering equal values in the transform panel or control palette. Which would answer my question if this was not something XPress can do effortlessly.
    If you draw a shape (box) in XPress and then hold down the SHIFT key XPress will immediately transform the shape into either a perfect square or circle depending on which tool you are using. Release and you have a perfect square or circle. But you cannot seem to do this in ID after you have already drawn an rectangle?
    Is there any way around this that does not involve multiple keystrokes or drawing a new frame?
    Second question. Anyway to go direct to master pages without having to use CMD+J and then enter the MP letter? In XPress OPTN+F10 will take you directly there and directly back.
    P.S. Not trying to start an XPress/ID discussion. Just trying to learn this program and XPress is the only reference I have.
    Thanks for any advice/tips in advance.

    Keyboard shortcut for these operation , you already know the standard method , but if you want some kind of one step procedure then scripting can help.
    Post your query on the Indesign scripting forums , someone may come up with the script to select the master page and change the rectangle to square.
    and you can define the keyboard shortcut to run this scripts ,,,one step procedure.

  • Indesign question: Master page items I remove won't stay gone

    I'm working on laying out a book, with various chapters which are separate files. Naturally there's a master page with various guides I use a lot, as well as a fairly standard running header with page numbers and chapter and section names. As is standard practise, I want these to appear on nearly every page, but not on the first pages of chapters. (There are other times I might want to override this, but that's the main one.) So, I Ctrl-Shift-click and delete them when I set up a new chapter.
    Problem is, they don't stay gone. Every so often, I open up a previous chapter and find that these elements are back on the first page of that chapter, and I delete them again. I've only been noticing this since I made the chapters in question into a book file so I could keep an eye on my page count and synch up styles more easily.
    My best guess is that maybe it has something to do with the aforementioned synching. I do want those chapters to share the same master page(s) but do not want IDto keep reapplying elements from them to individual pages that I've already manually removed them from (sometimes more than once). How can I prevent this from happening? (Or alternatively, if this isn't the cause of the problem, what else could it be and how do I deal with that?)

    Fair enough. Guess that's just as easy, if not slightly easier, than what I've been doing, and so far it seems to be working.

  • Question about page margins

    Hello all. I am trying to get started with my first document that will later be part of a book. My question is what to do about page margins. I imported my text, and then after that I tried to change my page margins, to make them larger. But when I did that, it created purple lines at the new margins, but the text is still filling out the old margins, going over the new margins.
    Not sure what to do here.

    Before changing the page margins, go to Layout > Layout Adjustment and select enable and the applicable options. Then make margin changes.

  • SharePoint O365 Tenant - Custom Master Page Question

    Hi guys,
    I setup a custom master page for a client and currently they have been very happy with it, although due to recent changes in the suit bar(the app launcher button) we had to move some design around on the page so that everything rendered properly.  As
    a result I had to use a method that is not the common practice and place all the code for the custom navigation bar, and logo right below the <body> tag and before the "<!--SPM:<SharePoint:ImageLink
    runat="server"/>-->" tag in order for things to render in the way they are requesting.  As a result of this the added code is displaying on top of every popup window as well as full page.  We only want it to display
    at the top of main pages.  In the attached image you will see that the page has a popup box for adding something to the calendar.  I attempted to edit the NewForm.aspx for Calendar List Item, but i was not able to find anything of use.  I even
    attempted to hide the div that holds all the code for the top bar via the NewForm.aspx but it was a no go.  Please advise on what I can do or weather i can attach a class of some sort to the div that would make this dynamic and hide on pop up pages.
    Thank You

    ***Update***
    I managed to figure out a solution to this problem.  I simply added the right class to it so its no longer in dialog boxes
    class="s4-notdlg noindex"

  • Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

    Please Help,
    This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
    We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
    These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
    When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
    Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
    It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily.  Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
    My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
    Please help!  If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!
    thanks in advance for any help.
    Or am I just being ridiculous and not actually realising you can switch this off, doh!
    G

    Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
    When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
    When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
    In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
    Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
    Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
    When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
    What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
    When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
    When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
    When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
    Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
    Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
    The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
    The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
    If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
    I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
    Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
    (When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)

  • Master page: header changes are not reflected in existing topics

    A few months ago this forum helped me to troubleshoot and fix problems with the Show More | Show Less command that I inherited from a previous writer.  I chose to use the Single Button approach and used this code, on the Master Page, for "onclick":
    <body>
    <?rh-script_start ?><script src="ehlpdhtm.js" type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript1.2"></script><?rh-script_end ?>
    <?rh-region_start type="header" style="width: 100%; position: relative;" ?>
    <table style="height: 10px;" cellspacing="0" width="100%">

      <col width="481" />
      <col width="97" />
      <tr>
       <td><h2><img src="NGP_Logo_small.png" alt="" style="border: none;"
           border="0" /></h2></td>
       <td><h2 style="text-align: right; margin-right: 20px;">Help</h2></td>
       <td><h2><img src="btnshowall.gif" onclick="ShowAll(this)" alt=""
           style="border: none;" border="0" /></h2></td>
    This worked fine until recently when I changed the logo in the left cell of the header table. Today I discovered that the img src = line had gone away. And so I re-entered it, and it works fine on new topics, and on some, but NOT all topics.
    Here's what happens on an older topic:
    Preview the topic.
    Click Show All button. A Script Error message appears: "The value fo the property 'ShowAll' is null or undefined, not a Function object. Code = 0. file = ...../Help/Administration/rlt1F1.htm.

    The only workaround I've found so far is to create a new topic, copy the content from the old topic, delete the old topic, and rename the new topic using the old topic's name. But that is very tedious.

  • Having issues with custom master pages and device channels

    I'm working in Sharepoint 2013 and am attempting to create a custom master page that is to be used by mobile devices. I have created an html file and a custom css file that includes snippets from the design manager. The file appears to preview fine in a
    browser from Microsoft Web Expression. I have loaded the html file into sharepoint via design manager, so the master file is there as well. The css files are in the style library for the site collection and I have created a device channel including user agent
    strings for iphones going back to the iPhone 4 and operating systems going back to iOS 6. I have obviously assigned my custom "mobile" master for that device channel and I have turned off mobile browsing. However when I open the site on my phone
    it shows the normal full desktop view and not my custom master. I will include my html code, my css and a screenshot of my device channel below. Please help!

    Hi,
    The issue is likely not your HTML Master Page but your user agent string. Try a user agent string of just "iphone". To test your master page, you could also set the user agent to "MSIE", which should cause this master page to load for
    any version of IE. This will help you debug the master page as well in your normal browser.

  • How to add left navigation to Custom Master page for Office 365

    Hi,
    I have created a master page using html, it looks good,
    But I could not see the left navigation, which I would like to have.
    below is my html page which converted to a master page:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><!--SPG:
    This HTML file has been associated with a SharePoint Master Page (.master file) carrying the same name.  While the files remain associated, you will not be allowed to edit the .master file, and any rename, move, or deletion operations will be reciprocated.

  • Facing Master Pages, how do I make them reassign themselves to left or right when I add an odd # of pages?

    I've been designing a travel journal & photo book series, and my process is that I have Master Pages A-D, facing. I'll put in all the text (Masters B, Left and Right), then I go back through and insert the photo pages between the correct dates. This generally works fine when I'm adding an even amount of photo pages, but if there happens to be an odd amount of photos for a specific date, then in shifts all the following pages so that instead of the two facing pages layouts being LEFT/RIGHT, it shifts to RIGHT/LEFT:
    This is how it should look (LEFT/RIGHT):
    But then if I add a right-oriented photo page, like this:
    it them shifts everything following it (RIGHT/LEFT), like this:
    At first, I thought it was just the text pages, because the design requires every text box on a LEFThand page to be centered, but the RIGHThand ones to be left of center, but If I add a LEFThand photo page inbetween the two incorrectly oriented pages in the previous photo, the photo page does the same thing:
    While doing this fixes the pages following it (because it's now an even amount of pages that have been inserted), I don't understand why inserting a RIGHThand layout into a RIGHThand slot doesn't correct it. If I drag the Master Page INTO the page (as opposed to adding a page), I get this dialog box:
    (note: this does NOT happen if the orientation of the facing pages is the correct one) I looked at every page's size and page setting (via page tool), and they're all the same:
    MY TWO QUESTIONS:
    1. Why does this happen and can I fix it/keep it from doing that?
    2. Is there a way to select an option or something that shifts everything so that if a text page starts as a LEFThand page, but then gets shifted over one, it'll change to a RIGHThand page? (I'm using CS6 for Mac Snow Leopard)
    Thank you so much!

    Why does one page have a different orientation than the others? If it is printed, you should keep all same size and orientations, exceptions only for pages which have different final sizes!
    You should set up you margins on the master page according where the text frames should be. But your frames are somehow laying on your pages without any relation to the margins borders.
    When you add an odd number of pages—it doesn't matter how—, it will shuffle succeeding left pages to the right, right pages to the left. That is how it is, except if you keep spread together or you don't allow to shuffle pages.
    If you want to adjust the content from a left page to a right page layout and vice versa you have to use either Layout Adjustment (correct margins are VERY important) or the new Liquid Layout Concept, good descriptions to learn this complex thematic are in the manual and in linked tutorial movies.
    If you insert a page based on a master it will use on the left side of a spread the left side of the master's spread and on the right side of a spread the right master's spread, if you grab the left or right side has no influence.
    Another influence comes from your text styles, used in keep options in paragraph styles. There you can determine that the paragraph style forces a headline to the left or to the right. Important with headlines in longer layouts.
    You should give your master more identifying names, not A-Master, B-Master, but like TIT-Titel, STA-Standard, but this is not the main problem here.
