NorthBridge for Temperature worries me

Why is the northbridge temperature running up to 160*F ? Is there a way to lower them?

  • "RTD Voltage to temperature conversion" for temperatures below 0 degrees

    NI gives us a conversion VI for temperatures above 0 degrees Celsius. I need a converter also for negative temperatures.
    Where can I find such a VI or a method ?

    It has the NIST polynomial equations and technical descriptions for
    various types of thermocouples and RTDs. I think it is just what you
    are looking for.
    You'll just have to slap them into a LabVIEW equation box and that
    should be that.

    Hi all.
    Sorry if this seems a simple question but I really sorry for the troubles. I'm a new user with LabVIEW and currently using LabVIEW 8.6 for a final year project of mine. I’m trying to monitor the temperature reading in 4 different depth of pavement for every 1 hour interval continuously for 1 month duration. Basically I’ll be using 4 separate thermocouples type J and NI 9219 device. My problems are:
    I’m not sure how to design the LabVIEW programming for my application.
    How to get the temperature reading data in Excel spread sheet.
    How to set the min, max and average daily temperature for each thermocouple.

  • Producer-c​onsumer design for temperatur​e and pressure acquisitio​n

    I am working on my first LabVIEW program in version 8.6.  I eventually want to be able to take both temperature and pressure measurements (6 RTDs and 2 pressure sensors), write them to files, compare the temperatures, and then turn 9 heaters (2 zones) on and off depending on the temperatures and temperature differences. I will also need to have necessary alarms and emergency shut down if something overheats.
    To start, I am just working with temperature. I have made a program that reads 2 RTDs with the NI9217 in the cDAQ 9172. It plots the temperatures and writes them to file. Then it compares the 2 temperatures. If the temperature difference is greater than the user defined difference, an LED alarm lights up. This loops until the user presses the stop button.
    The program runs, but then I get a 200279 error. It says that increasing the buffer may do the trick; however, I read online and watched a video on the producer/consumer design, which I think might do the trick. I am hoping with the producer/consumer design that I will be able to sample the temperatures faster (especially once I have 6 RTDs and 2 pressure sensors). Right now it takes about 11 seconds for the loop to run.
    I have played around with trying to do the producer/consumer design, but I am not having much luck. I am not sure how to set it up.  Do I need to have one producer loop with the DAQ assistant, and then 2 consumer loops (one for each RTD)? If I have 2 consumer loops, how do I then synchronize the data to compare the temperatures that were taken at the same time?
    If I only use 1 consumer loop, how do I separate the data that is coming from one RTD vs. the other RTD?
    Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I have attached my attempt at the producer-consumer design.  It runs much faster than the VI I attached in my first posting; however, it has bugs.
    When I press the stop button, I get an error 1 (occurred at Dequeue Element).
    Also, how do I get the graphs to plot with a fixed axis? For example I would like to see the plot of 5mins worth of data. I have tried turning off the autoscale, but it does not keep the axis from changing.
    Any suggestions on how I can clean up this program? When I get to adding more RTDs, should they all be in this same consumer loop? 
    What would be the best way to add in the pressure data? With another producer loop and another consumer loop?

  • I am looking for a simple data logger for temperature

    I am having a hard time finding a basic data logger for recording temperature over a period of several minutes. I am using a SCXI 1001 Chassis, with SCXI 1303 terminal blocks hooked up to a computer running Windows XP and Labview 8.0 and VI Logger Lite.

    Thanks for posting.  You could log your data
    using either LabVIEW or VI Logger.  If using VI Logger, the following
    screenshot from the help file explains how to log data:
    If you are using LabVIEW, you can use the Write to Spreadsheet File function (or a number of other functions depending on your preference).
    If you are using the DAQmx driver, a third option would be to download SignalExpress. 
    The LE edition is free, and provides the basic functionality that you
    need to log your data to a file.  The SignalExpress download comes with
    a 30-day trial of the full version--it should be fairly intuitive to
    get started, but don't hesitate to post on the SignalExpress forums if you have any questions.  Have a great weekend!

  • Looking for temperature monitoring in OS 9.2.2

    Hello!
    Got one of the last dual 1.25 models of the MDD G4 series. Although, I don't really use OS 9.2.2 anymore, for some reason I am reviving my usage of it(to a point) - Does anyone know of a way to check temperature readings with MDDs in OS 9? there has to be a temperature monitor software that will run in OS 9? I checked with the people who make temperature monitor, and they don't even have an OS 9 version.
    I am anxious to see what my cpu temps are while natively inside OS 9.2.2

    There is a Mac OS 9 version for Daystar's MAChSpeed. One of its functions is thermal monitoring.

  • Changing Colour Display for Temperatur​e Distributi​on

    Hi everyone,
    I am currently involved in reading a series of temperatures along a length of pipe as part of an experiment.  I thought it would be a nice touch for my VI to have a diagram of the pipe which changes colour to show the temperature distribution along it.
    I have attached my initial solution.  I would have posted a VI snippet but this seemed to effect the my references in the property nodes.  
    Issues
    The code 'works' in the sense that the foreground colour of each tab control will change based on the value of the corresponding temperature.
    The solution does not scale well.  I need 'n-1' case structures for 'n' colours/temperatures.  I considered using an enum input to a single case structure, but was not sure how to compare this to the for loop index.
    Unsure whether changing a tab control background is the most efficient way to do this.  Not sure of an alternative.
    I am looking for suggestions as to how to do this more efficiently as there will be up to 16 temperatures in the final system.

    Tabs are probably the weirdest choice here. Why not use e.g. a simple colorbox or button?
    In any case, try to learn about autoindexing, it will dramatically simplify your code (see attached in yellow box).
    I probably would use an array of clusters, each containing a colorbox and a numeric with transparent background. Modify as needed. (see attached in green box).
    Of course you probably would want to make it a it prettier than my draft.
    For a larger ramp, I would use a plain array of flat colorboxes. Now simply index into a color ramp to generate it according to your temperatures.

  • Using LabVIEW for temperature control with AMREL SPS200-50-A022 power supply

    Hi, I hope someone can help me out. I'm an ME undergrad with pretty much no knowledge of LabVIEW. I am working a project which requires a temperature controller. Previously, we were using an SPS120-10 power supply from AMREL and a grad student wrote a LabVIEW VI which performed feedback temperature control. The VI would acquire temperature from a Benchlink which acquire the temperature from a thermocouple. The VI also monitor the output voltage & current and determine the power output and heater resistance from those values. When a desired temperature is set, the VI compares the actual temperature to the set temperature and adjust the voltage/current setting to achieve the desired temperature. The VI was designed to keep temperature deviation to within +/-0.5 deg C. I'm not sure of the data refresh rate, but it's on the order of seconds since the system has a small thermal mass and we're operating in the 800+ deg C range. When we were using the SPS120-10, the device used GPIB for communication with the PC. Due to higher power output demand for the heater, we switched to an SPS200-50, which only has an RS-232 port. First of all, I was wondering if someone could help me modify the VI so that it could communicate with the SPS200-50 through the serial port? In addition, the drivers for the SPS120-10 and SPS200-50 might be different. If modifying the VI to communicate through the serial port isn't enough, I would need to figure out where to modify the VI with the SPS200-50 drivers, which is provided by AMREL. If anyone would like, I can send you the VI files so that you can take a look at the block diagram and tell me where to modify it. I'm still not 100% certain I understand how to read LabVIEW block diagrams.

    I have looked over your vi. First of all you have to do some changes in the "ARSPS Initialize.vi" See picture.
    The best way to check instrument communication is to send the *IDN? Command. The instrument will indentify itself in response to this command. The vi I have included is a labview example. Use this Vi to test your communication. Do not progress before this is working. The VI is also an excellent example on how to set up and close down RS232 communication.
    The VI "Tfeedbackpowercontroller-nolvdt-Dinh.vi" looks OK so I guess it will work then your RS232 communication with the SPS200-50-A022 is working

  • Which is right? speedfan or corecenter for temperatures?

    For some reason SpeedFan is reporting 3c less than CoreCenter for the CPU temperature, they report the same temperature for system temp.

    I've always found that CoreCenter always gives a very conservative (erring on the hot side) reading. Other hardware monitors (SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php), MBM (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/), Hmonitor (http://www.hmonitor.com/)) consistently report 4-5 degrees less for all CPU temps (idle and load) than MSI's CoreCenter does.  I have also found that everybody else who has tested this has found the same thing.
    As for which one is "right", just about all temperature readings (BIOS included) are not especially accurate.  I tend to trust whatever monitor I'm using at the time.  In the broad scope of things, 3-5 degrees is not the difference between stability and instability (or usability and unusability).  The temperature report is more or less just an estimate.

    I just tryed to installed Temperature monitor on my beige, and it reports that there is not sensors it can find on the system. Is it normal on the beige?

    some other pieces of software ... used if you overclock your CPU or install a ZIF upgrade.
    You should know that a ZIF upgrade with a G4 does report a CPU temperature with these programs, but that it is inaccurate (putting it mildly). Mine reads below room temperature. This is a feature of the G4 implementation, I was told.
    I have a simple Radio Shack temperature monitor, a small probe on a one meter wire to an LCD readout. The probe wedges neatly into the heatsink, and can be shielded from cooling fan air with a small piece of foam. The wire can be lead out through the speaker area on the MT.
    This probe picks up the difference in heatsink temp caused by toggling the cache on and off. It also shows that Sys 9 runs hotter than OS X, 48 C vs 42 C (varies with external temp. of course, here 26). Heavy Photoshop use will raise the OS X reading several degrees, but never to the level of Sys 9.
    It also changes with its placement in the heatsink, and also with heatsink spring position. On time I didn't get the spring on right and saw a higher temp than expected so I could correct it. Also, my installation also has two small 12v fans (wired in series off the 12v disk drive supply so they run quieter) that considerably increase airflow over the CPU.

    Yesterday I bought the Micro-ATX MSI 6340M Rev.5 Motherboard.
    I want to run programms like "Motherboard Monitor" to control the system- and cpu-temperature.
    But this motherboard seems to be unable to messure such values.
    Am I right or wrong??
    If I'm right, is there another way to control the temp.?

  • Normal Temperatures for Minis

    I've searched quite a bit but can't seem to locate any stats on what is considered the "normal range" for temperatures. I'm not currently experiencing any problems, but recently got the program "Temperature Monitor" (Bresink) hoping it might read my external HDs (NOT).
    This Mini has always seems to run a little hot IMHO, so I though I would check it out...
    2009 Mini 2.0 Dual Core w/4GB RAM and upgraded to a 7200RPM 320GB internal.
    My numbers -
    CPU A Temp Diode - 83C/181F
    Hard drive bay - 53C/127F
    Northbridge position 1 - 65C/149F
    Smart Disk WDC WD3200BEKT - 54C/129F
    Wireless Module - 63C/149F
    CPU Core 1 - 82C/180F
    CPU Core 2 - 79C/174F
    The little bit I've read seems to say this is awfully high, but I'm not positive. The room is air conditioned to 78F, and it's on a desktop with the back end just at the edge of the desk - exposed to open space. It's currently been running Handbrake transcodes for the past 24+ hours straight, as well as Safari and a few other small things. I realize the factory HDs are only 5400RPM (probably to save on heat).
    Shall I run out and get a fire extinguisher? LOL

    so.. i assume you measured the temperatures while or directly after doing a handbrake encoding?
    nope. don't think you need a fire extinguisher. i've a late 2009 mini with 2,26 GHz cpu and also 4 GB RAM. when using handbrake (which puts the cpu under a 95% load) my core temps will even rise to a 100°C, before the fan starts to spin up from it's usual 1500 rpm base speed to cool them down to an average of 89/90°C while encoding. as i haven't experienced this behaviour and temperatures on my old 1,66 GHz coreduo mini, i phoned apple care several times until i got someone from their technical department. he assured me that this temps and the relatively late spinning up of the fan are perfectly within the specs of the 2009 series of minis and macbooks as the cpu itself can stand it (tjunction max at 105°C) and new buliding materials allow for higher temperatures than in the older series models.
    however.. when doing an encoding, i use smcfancontrol, a freeware tool that allows you to adjust the fan's base speed without tempering with the general build in smc fan settings of the mac and also allows you to create different fan settings for different cpu usage scenarios.

    I've dug up some more info..
    For temperature monitoring, a QST SDK is needed for supporting the ICH8 southbridge. The OpenAMT project is working on that (http://www.openamt.org/), but there doesn't seem to be much progess.
    However, it looks like Intel will be releasing an SDK itself. See: http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/ … hp?t=54851
    Maybe after that we will have temperature & voltage monitoring support for all Nehalem and Arrandale chipsets.
