My wife's iPad Air MD786LL/A with 32GB. Running iOS 8.0.2. I bought it for her last year for her birthday to replace her old iPad. She won't give up the old iPad. I keep her iPad Air up to date from time-to-time but when I tried to update the iOS, it said there was not enough free storage space (requires 2.4GB and the iPad Air only has 1.8GB). She also has a MacBook Air running Yosemite and an iPhone 4S on iOS 8.2. The old iPad runs iOS 7 and won't do the multi-device sync with MBA and iPhone (which is why I was trying move her to the more modern iOS). I need to free up some space on iPad Air.

I note that Settings>General>About does not list Books in the list of things on the iPad Air. Why is this?
Everything syncs to iCloud.
Q: can I delete photos on the iPad Air without removing them from her MacBook Air or iPhone?
I note that the iCloud Photos is still Beta. When I went to turn that on, it said that the 7,695 photos would be removed from the other devices. I did not proceed.
Q: How does one move a book back to the cloud after it has been read? This should free up space.

It means your hard drive is too full to accomodate the project and its many swap files etc.
You need to move some files (not applications) to your external hard drive, and keep at least 25-30GB free.

If you can't free up enough space by deleting items, get an external hard drive and move the files there. An absolute minimum of 25 GB is required by iDVD.

IDVD is limited by the duration of your movie and nothing else.
A single layer DVD is good for about two hours. A dual layer DVD is good for about three hours and 45 minutes.
You do need a certain amount of free space to create DVDs.
To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8 to 10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15 to 20 GB of free disk space. To check how much disk space you have, Control-click the hard disk icon on your desktop and choose Get Info. Then look next to Available to see how much space you have.
The encoded DVD files remain on your hard disk inside your project’s folder. If you do not want to save the encoded files after you burn your project to a disc, you can delete them.

Yes - This is important.
Free Space - Must be on the Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk and can not be used on any other.
My safe level is a minimum of 25Gb free space - to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK.
This is due to that Mac OS X is in reality UNIX and there by needs lot's of temporary space for temp. files and so does the application iDVD. And this can not be addressed elsewhere.
So to free up space - one thing is to move iMovie Events to an external hard disk BUT THIS MUST BE DONE Right Else all can be lost ! !
• Never move or adjust any folders Named - iMovie Events or iMovie Projects - on Desktop/Finder - links will breake and can be hard to impossibly to heal. ALL movings must be done within iMovie Application (it goes for iMovie'08 to 11)
• External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will NOT WORK FOR VIDEO - nearly everything else BUT NOT VIDEO.

I know this will probably sound dumb, but I burned a dvd with less space this morning and now this is the message I'm getting for the same project and I have a little more than what I had last time. Can someone explain this or tell me what I can do? I'm not sure what else I can remove to free up more space at the moment.

You will need at least 15 GB's of free space on the boot volume and hopefully you have more than this. If you have less then iDvd may have a number of issues in burning your dvd; or rather attempting to burn the dvd.
If you do not have the available HD space, then you'll need to clear some items off the boot volume prior to burning to Dvd-R.
Things to remove would be things like completed iMovie and iDvd project files. If you have a vast collection of music, photos & videos; burning them to dvd helps as does using Monolingual to clear languages other than English (if you can afford to do so). The latter will clear between 500 MB's to 2 GB's from the main HD depending on which languages are deleted. (I'd highly recommend NOT deleting English).

I have never had a issue with burning dvd's before now I am getting an error message

How much hard drive space do you have remaining? How much data are you trying to burn (i.e. are you sure the capacity of the disc is high enough?)

Issue 2: Not enough free disk space

Well, now that I'm here, I will try to figure out all my problems.
Ignoring the fact that my MacBook won't turn on, once it goes back to normal, I hope I can solve another thing. Two or three times, while I've been working in heavey Word documents in my Macbook, a message box appears when I click on save or when it tries to do "Autorecovery". It says there's not enough free disk space for me to save that file. What I do every time is I select all, then copy and then quit word. I open it again, paste and save. Everything is fine, but I'd really like to know *** is wrong since I do have a lot of free disk space and this doesn't happen unless it's a heavy file in word. Should I get rid of some apps? Unused files? I don't have that many... I think my Macbook is acting weird since I've almost got nothing stored in it but files, pictures and songs. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening again?

Get Info on your hard drive or open a finder window and see how much space is available on your drive - that's at the bottom. Music, pictures, movies use more disk space than most files. You might have enough space sometimes because various programs - like Safari - cache material and the caches can get large. Some caches empty themselves and others need to be emptied; you can empty the Safari cache from one of the menus.

Yes, 44GB is sufficient. I don't think space is the problem. I don't know about iMovie but iDVD can only use the boot drive for its scratch disk.
You might be getting that error due to some damage file in the project.
Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.

3 - launch IDVD and try again.
Also run Disk Utility and verify the disk. If errors are indicated you will need to boot iknto your system install disk and repair the disk with Disk Utility (see the Utilities menu in the first window after the language selection window).

IDVD not enough free disk space

iDVD is giving me the error: not enough free disk space for encoding assets when I try to burn a disk or create a disk image. After reading other posts the issue seems to be not enough memory on the computers hard drive, but there is 174.73 GB of space remaining...
All of the files for the dvd (photos, imovie file, clips, music, ect) are saved on a thumb stick for security. I can't think of why it would not be able to burn.

How much space is available on the thumb drive?
iDVD may be using that disk for scratch, so it may need more space on this drive than is available. Off-hand I don't know of a way to change the scratch disk, beyond moving your source material to the main drive before you burn.

My longer notes on this error:
The most common workaround for this is to build to a folder and burn with ImgBurn (for PC) or toast (for Mac).
Searches show that there has not been success in many situations. I do not believe that it is one problem.
I have generally believed that the error refers to temporary storage on the hard drive. And users underestimate the amount of temporary hard disk drive space used. For bluray it is about twice the disk or more.
Some users experience this error when they are creating dual layer BD disks, and a layer is more than 25G. Each video/layer must fit on one side.
And some users successfully burn their disk by re-encoding to a lower bitrate (a 25G BD disk does not hold 25G). Encore uses padding to predict the size on disk (e.g. add 10% to the amount of space it predicts that build will use), and it can be wrong.
Always good to "run as administrator, though I don't know that ever fixed this issue if someone wasn't.
For CS4 there was a required update for a Roxio component. I believed this was a temporary problem due to the combination of Win7 and Encore CS4, but users on newer OS and Encore have reported resolution of problems after installing the patch.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Not enough free disk space to export photos

I am having trouble exporting a sizable photo album slideshow from iPhoto to a flash drive.
I have spent countless hours captioning some 3000 family photos into about 20 albums. The number of photos in albums ranges from 20 to 295.
I've been successful in exporting each album slideshow to a 16gb flash drive except for the two largest ones, with 232 (351mb) and 295 photos (555mb). For these two, I get a very quick error message "not enough free disk space. Free up space on the disk and try again." There is plenty of space on my 16gb flash drive, and my desktop has more than 440gb free space out of 495 total.
I've tried updating iPhoto to v. 9.1 without success. Is this an iPhoto issue? I'd rather not switch to iLife and have to pay for it.
I am very average at systems stuff, so please make your suggestions in language I can understand! Any ideas are welcome and appreciated!

How did you arrive at the numbers you got for available space? Some things are not counted in the amount of space depending on what you did (like local Time Machine snapshots, etc) and some things are. I use the "df -kt" (shows everything in KBytes - use "-mt" if you prefer to see the numbers in Mbytes or "-gt" to see in GBytes) command in a Terminal window to list the total size, amount used, amount free for all mounted volumes.
Do you have "Read&Write" permissions on the disk you're trying to save to? Perhaps there are some "hidden" folders taking up a lot of space?

Blu-ray Error: "not enough free storage" - even though 800MB are free

I'm trying to burn a Blu-Ray, about 2h20min worth of VBR 2pass HD video exported therough Premier 5.5 via the "Queue" (Media Encoder). Using the Blu-ray mpeg preset with the target bitrate slightly reduced.
Anyway, point is that Disc Info in the Build tab says 24.18 GB used, 818.9 MB free, yet when I go to burn I get "Blu-ray Error: 'not enough free storage', Code '25', Note: 'Not enough disc space.'" I've had problems with dual layer DVDs in the past, but I have successfully burned blu-ray before (but with not as much content). So I tried doing my workaround for DLs, which is burning to a folder with the intention of going through ImgBurn. But when I try to do a Blu-ray folder I get 'Blu-ray Error: 'device not ready,' Code '3', Note: "File can not open.(F:\Encore Projects\Geprges and Julie Bluray\AuthorScriptHDMVSessions\Gerpges Julie export 1 bluray 2pass high.m2v.00_28_02_22.9.2011_UTC_04_00DST.ves.)- "
("Georges and Julie" is name of my file and project.)
Any ideas? For the record, yes I am running as administrator.

Well, this is a bug that has been running since, I think, CS5 and is still there in CS5.5
This error code 25 would come when you burn to the Blu-ray Image and not with Folder and Disc.
And regarding the error code 3 that came while burning to folder, this is because sometimes with multiple burning attempts of the same project causes the session files of the project go corrupt. So FIRST TAKE A BACK UP OF YOUR PROJECT (save as your project to some other place to retain a copy of it) and then clsoe the project and delete all the session files from the project folder. Delete the session files and Not the Sesson folder.
Reopen the project and build. This should work.
