Not sending the correct field value

Question

Hi All,
In our application there is an option of choosing a 'Group' from a list box. We would also like to enable the user to input a new Group Name if need be. The user will have to select 'Create a New Group' option in the list box and then type in the new group name in a text box placed next to the list box.
In order to implement this we have created a global look up table wherein the name of the new group entered by the user is inserted. All further queries for that particular Group Name is carried out by quering into the look up table and extracting the appropriate Group Name i.e. this group will henceforth be referred to by the row id in the look up table.
We are updating the look up table by writing a insert into sql statement as a process for the page. We have checked the sql statement many times and the order in which we are inputting the fields is in accordance with the fields in the look up table..
The problem that we are facing is that when the user creates a new group, the lookup table is being inserted with a number (196X - which we think is the automatically generated row id as generated by a sequence generator trigger) and not the text that the user is giving....
