"not-so-secured" network with Airport.

Hello everybody.
(Sorry for my english, i am a belgian user)
As i have no Wi-Fi modem, I recentltly created a secured wi-fi network with my Mac Mini to connect easily my ipod touch and family's computers. I used Airport and "create new network" tool. All works perfectly and i am very happy with this.
The problem is when i reboot the Mac Mini. As soon as Leopard is started, it create a new UNSECURED wifi network, so all the people in my flat can connect my network, access the printers and shared docs ( i didn't protect them to let an acces to all my family and friends that come home)
I have to stop Airport at the boot of MacOS to stop the unsecured network and then create a the usual secured network...
This is a big problem for me and i really would like leopard to remember my network and parameters (password) to have the same wifi network each time i boot up my Mac.
I think that a Mac that create an unsecured network at the startup is a big lack of securit ( or i din't find the correct option???)
Thank a lot for all your help
C.V.

You mean, you enabled Internet sharing in System preferences, Sharing.
Well, I would not be so sure that such a connection is secure, mainly because WEP is the only algorithm available with that kind of network.
That said, I tried it a couple of times and it works very well, but I never used it as a long stand solution. So I cannot say if the behaviour you described it's normal.

  • Is this type of set-up possible - private and public network with Airport

We have an office network with Airport. We have internet with a cable modem with routers plugged to it. The network is not now shared with anyone outside the business.
But would it be possible to add a public component to our setup that would give others access to the internet but never, never, never allow them to enter/see/ mess with the private side?
    Tim

Sorry to intrude, I came across this thread while I was looking for some other information and thought that there needed to be a point of clearification to identify some major security vulnerabilities.
With the current config, Cable Modem->Wan port of Router A->Router B plugged into LAN port on Router A
    1. Traffic from Router A would see all traffic sent from router B out to the internet, if I was able to sniff the traffic on router A then I would see everything that router B was passing to the internet...not good idea if Router A is public, (traffic would not be encrypted since this is a hard line pass to the cable modem).
    2. Router A will always be able to see the interface of router B (have to have it this way to perform the passing of IP traffic from one router to the other.) This means that router B will be open for brute force login attempts and any other vulnerabilities that the router might carry, again since this is being accessed from a publicly accessible network it would be hard to stop from happening in todays world.
    3. Router B subnet - If you NAT all the IP's behind router A on it's on subnet (which would include Router B). Uunless router B truly has two interfaces (internal and external) you would not be able to use different subnets and expect to pass traffic all the way to the cable modem because it would not know how to get there.
Again, this post is not meant to cause annomosity, it is to help educate.
I personally think that the safer bet is to get a second hi-speed connection, physical seperation in this case is the best way to go, saves you the worry of getting attacked or snooped on, and keeps your private information safe from the public...unless that is something that you are willing to risk sharing.

  • Cannot access my own secure network with G4 iBook

I set up a WPA secure network with a AirPort Extreme Base Station. No problem using it with my G4 iMac. However, when I try to access it with a second computer, a G4 iBook laptop, using the same WPA password I use to access it with my iMac, I get an error message.
Using the Setup Assistant with the iBook gives me an "invalid password" message. I know it is the correct password. I set it up and I use it with the iMac!
When the network is unsecured (no password needed) the iBook can access it, no problem.
Please tell me what I need to do to be able to access my own secure network with my iBook. TIA!

The only thing I can think of is the firmware for the AirPort card in the iBook, which is version 9.52. I could not find anywhere in Apple's website how to upgrade this. Does anybody know how to upgrade this firmware?
If there is any firmware update to the card it is done automagically whenever the corresponding AirPort software update is applied. There is no user notification and no way for the user to make updates diretly.

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

Use the search as this has been done to death ..

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Could not establish secure connection with server

    Hi ,
We are not able to access our web service URL from Ipad Application on some of the network. We are receiving “could not establish secure connection with the server” message. We are able to access the same URL from other networks. Can you please suggest what can be possible Root cause and their suggested solution?  We would appreciate your quick response..

    hi Alfonso,
Editing the hosts file is easy. just need to use the CAS/CAM CLI and the vi test editor. You can google for instructions on how to use Vi.
To start assume we have a CAM and CAS with the hostname cam1 and cas1 respectively. the domain is mycompany.com and the ip addresses for the CAM and CAS is 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.15.2 respectively.
start with the CAM and view the hosts table
    cat /etc/hosts
To check what domain u used to setup the CAM
    cat /etc/resolver.conf
edit the hosts file so appears like so
    192.168.10.1 cam1.mycompany.com cam1
    192.168.15.2 cas1.mycompany.com cas1
    Verify with 'cat /etc/hosts'
Make sure you can ping 'cas1' and 'cas1.mycompany.com' from cam1
Next edit the hosts file for cas1 so that it appears like so
    192.168.15.2 cas1.mycompany.com cas1
    192.168.10.1 cam1.mycompany.com cam1
Make sure you can ping 'cam1' and 'cam1.mycompany.com' from cas1

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
    (2) Remove the site's cookies using either of these. Save any pending work first.
While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

2- i was pass CCNA and CCDA already so can i continuous to take this exam?
I try to find ebook and offline file from Cisco website but it don't have....
Please let me know if you know this ...:)
    best regards,

There's a quick reference book for SNAF. You can find it on the cisco press website. There's also an older book called "Cisco ASA: All-in-One Firewall, IPS, and VPN Adaptive Security Appliance". It's from 2005 but it's usefull.
After CCNA I'd recommend you to pass CCNA:Security before you take SNAF. It's needed both for ASA Specialist and for CCSP.
    Good luck

  • Is it possible to set up a network with airport extreme that is not on the internet

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?  Not connected to the internet wifi.

Is it possible to set up a home network using airport extreme that will be a non-internet option?
    Yes
Not connected to the internet wifi.
If the AirPort Exteme is not connected to the Internet, then Internet connections will not be available on wireless or wired connections.

  • Extending Gen 1 Time Capsule Wireless network with Airport Express N

I am having difficulty setting up my new Airport Express w/ 802.11N (SKU# MB321LL/A) to extend the wireless network from my Time Capsule (SKU# MB276LL/A).
    My setup is as follows:
Time Capsule is connected to Cable modem with the following wireless settings:
Wireless mode -> Create a Wireless Network
Allow this network to be extended -> Checked
    Radio Mode ->802.11n (5Ghz N only)
    Wireless Security -> WPA2 Personal
The issue is the when I attempt to setup the AE to extend the network. I match the settings to the Time Capsule:
Wireless Mode -> Extend a Network
    Select the Time Capsule Network
    Allow wireless clients -> Checked
    Wireless Security -> WPA2 Personal
However after I reset the AE the LED glows Amber and the following problem is reported:
    +Wireless Network+
+This AirPort wireless device is set up to join a specific wireless network that can't be found. If you don't see the network that you want to join in the Network Name Pop-up menu, enter the network name and network password if necessary to try again.+
When I check the Airport->Wireless tab the settings were as before.
    Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Have you tried to position the AirPort Express close, say 10-15 feet, as a test to see if it will connect that way?
If so, then move it back another 10-15 feet, etc.
5 GHz signals do not travel well or penetrate surfaces very well, so my first thought was that the signal was not strong enough for the Express to pick it up where you had it located.

  • Roaming network with AirPort Extreme and Netgear R6300

    Hi there everyone
I need to know if I can make a roaming network with my apple AirPort Extreme as the base station and then I want to use an Ethernet cable to connect to a Netgear R6300 which will be located at the other end of my house where th connection is poor via wireless.
So is this possible with this set up and if so how do I go about configuring each router to make it work?
Will I need to make both SSIDs the same so I wan wander through the house and stay connected to the same network?

Do not even bother to link wirelessly.. Apple do not allow it.. nor probably does the netgear.. there is no proper standard to wireless link routers.. it is a case where everyone does what is right in their own eyes.
    Roaming is the best anyway..
SSID = Wireless Name must be the same.. and use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric names.. not apple type. You can set a different name for 5ghz.. imho that is the best idea.. but up to you .. roaming and band swapping at the same time leads to chaos.
WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES security and is the only standard that should be used now..
Password for wireless the same. 10-20 character mix upper and lower case + numbers.. keep it pure alphanumeric.
And now the tricky one.. channels.. there is only one difference between the different wireless stations and that is channels. You can leave everything at auto.. but if it leads to trouble fix them on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
    Use non-overlapping .. see
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
Which show the 2.4ghz channels very clearly.. you will need to work your way around the 5ghz a bit because it differs so much region to region.

  • Problems extending network with Airport Express

After messing with the settings on my new Airport Express((802.11n), I finally managed to set up a WDS network that sort of works. I've been struggling for a day and a half trying to use it to extend my regular network set up on my Airport Extreme(802.11g). I used multiple configurations, different securities, channels, etc, and got nothing but flashing amber. Somehow I've got it working with AirTunes, but no internet. Here is the current WDS setup:
    *AEBS(g)-WDS MAIN*
    Connected to Comcast broadband
    v 5.7
    WPA/WPA2 security
    Channel 6
    Set as WDS-Main
    Internet: Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
Remote is set to the ID for the AX
Sharing: Share a public IP address
    *AX(n)-WDS REMOTE*
    v 7.3.2
    WPA/WPA2 security
    Channel 6
    Set as WDS Remote
    Internet: Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    Sharing off (Bridge mode)
The AX works as a music streamer only. In order to access the internet I have to switch to the main network (AEBSg). For some reason the AE is not sharing internet connection with the AX. Could it be my internet settings on the AE? Or maybe it's not possible to extend a "g" network with an "n" AX? Any suggestions would be great...

Price difference between an express vs an extreme makes moving to an extreme very attractive. using extremes and the extend a network feature automates a lot of settings. I tried the express route and was never happy with the results.

  • How to setup a network with airport cards

I have an unusual lapse in figuring out how to set up a network with an iMac and iBook both with 10.4.7. I have an Airport card in both machines after my Airport base stopped working properly. I have Comast DSL.
The iMac is working fine and connects to the 'net but the iBook does not and also does not connect to the network. I cannot seem to grasp the many variations of the network options; I'm not a novice user but the network aspects fly over my head.
Is there any resource available that can explain thoroughly how to set up the network, or perhaps give me a "recipe" for setting up the Network and Sharing options? I've tried to find this info to no avail. Right now I cannot join the iBook and I know there must be an easy way to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • What are the downsides to extending an Airport Express's network with Airport Extreme?

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports? I think it happens more often than not that the position of the modem from your ISP in the dwelling is not the ideal location for a router, and it is sometimes inconvenient/impossible to wire an ethernet connection to the optimal location. I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, and was thinking of hooking up the Express to the modem and having the Extreme extend that network, placed at the optimal router location. My concern with that setup is whether the Extreme will use all of its antennas, since the Express has fewer (6 vs 2 if I'm correct).

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports?
There are none. You might be confusing such a "wirelessly extended" network with a WDS, which was a horrible compromise with significant disadvantages.
The optimal location for the second AirPort might not be obvious. Keep in mind that it can only "wirelessly extend" the signal it is capable of receiving. Place it in a location where the wireless signal created by the main router remains strong, while still being able to create a network that covers your required wireless service area.
Don't worry about the number of antennas or how they are used. They're all used.

  • MIxed Wifi and Powerline Network with Airport Express

Can anyone help set up a network using both wifi and ethernet?
I currently have a BT Home Hub ADSL router providing wifi throughout my house and 2 airport expresses to stream music from my iMac.  The problem is that the sound occasionally drops out.  I've tried most of the common fixes from the discussions but nothing seems to work reliably.  My next step is to try and use powerline adapters.  If possible I want to use the following configs simultaneously:
    1.     BT Home Hub (Broadband) to wifi throughout the house inc my iMac.
    2.     IMac to powerline adapter to powerline adapter(s) to airport express(es). I have 3 200Mbps adapters.
    Thanks in advance.

Each AirPort Express that is connected to the network using an Ethernet connection should be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located just below the row of icons
Assign a separate name to each AirPort Express
Assign a device password for each device
    Adjust Time Zone settings
Remove the check mark (if present) next to "allow setup over WAN"
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your BT wireless network
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) a good choice
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Exact same security setting as the BT wireless network. If settings are not exact, the network will not function correctly.
Wireless Password = Same password as the BT wireless network
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the AirPort Express to restart
When all Express devices have been configured, power down the entire network....all devices...order is not important
Start the modem/hub first and let it run a few moments by itself
Start each AirPort Express one at a time about a minute apart
Sart each network device the same way until everything is powered back up
