Not worth the trouble

With all the bugs and installation errors it is not worth the trouble to download until Adobe offers an new beta version.

What particular bugs and installation issues are you experiencing? If you could give specifics, please, including OS etc.then perhaps you can be helped.

  • Safari 5.0.5 - Slow, Crashes, Not Worth The Trouble?

Hi - I'm a brand-new iMac user, trying to switch after 15 years of being a PC user.  I have a "new" iMac that I bought from a guy who just purchased it in January, so everything should be extremely current.  The computer was wiped clean upon transfer to me and I have been spending three days bringing it up from scratch.  I love most everything about it except for the Internet access through Safari, which is just God-awful.
My problems are:  Pages don't load, or won't load on the first try and then I have to reload or kill and reload.  Pages can take up to five minutes to load, which is just ridiculous.  Images in the pages, such as for Facebook or Comcast, don't load at all.  And Safari constantly crashes entirely, causing me to have to reboot the iMac and start all over again.
Since I use the home computer primarily for Web surfing, this is a major issue and if I can't get this problem rectified, I'm going to have to ditch the iMac and go back to a PC, which obviously I don't want to do.  But at 57 years old, I don't have the patience to wait around for Apple to fix it.  And I sure don't have the computer smarts on my own to delve into the guts of this thing and monkey around.  Help?!!  Any and all advice appreciated, but please frame your answers in very easy-to-follow steps for an old **** with limited skills.  Again, I love this machine but I'm not feeling the love back from it.  Thanks.

    And Safari constantly crashes entirely
Post a crash report so we can try and help...
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
You did get the install discs that originally came with this iMac, correct???
Images in the pages, such as for Facebook or Comcast, don't load at all.
With Safari running go to the menu bar top of your screen click Safari / Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Select:  Display images when the pages opens.
If you can't figure out how to locate or post a crash report, login to another user account on the iMac. If Safari crashes there, that can be an indication the startup disk needs repairing.
Log back into your admin account.
    Launch Disk Utility.  /Applications/Utillities.
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Update 10.2.1 is NOT worth the new features!

Upgraded to 10.2.1 yesterday and it's definitely NOT worth the new features for me.  The phone runs MUCH slower and drains the battery MUCH faster.  You'll need to turn off BlackBerry Link (in the settings menu) when not in use to keep from recharging your device every 5-6 hours.  STAY AWAY!

Well,i read a few threads about people complaining and stuff.BUT I upgraded and restored data through PC.and in other threads Sanders said it might take a while for BlackBerry Link to finish syncing OTA.
Just be patient alright,Z10s are speed demons if you ask me

  • My Droid Razr Maxx froze last night. It is not worth the money.

This is my 2nd Droid since June. The first I had for 2 weeks and the battery was draining in less than 24 hours. This one I got in the 3rd week of June. I bought it because I wanted a good phone camera - I rarely use data, it is used mainly for calls and texting . I DID send a pic to Facebook last weekend, and could not log out of Facebook. This might be the cause of following freezing, don't know). The screen started going crazy occasionally after having it a month. It does the same thing other people have posted - opens apps, opens text messages and types, has made calls, etc. It has also frozen. Last night it froze on me. I tried turning it off and the screen went blank. The battery was not low, but I plugged it in anyway - it didn't show that it was charging so I unplugged it and hoped it would be ok in the morning. Sometime in the night it beeped indicating I had a text. It did it again around 6:30 a.m.. When I got up, it still had the blank screen and the message light was flashing. I couldn't get a screen. I plugged it in to charge it and after app. 15 minutes my screen came up but it was still frozen. I've had two phone calls I couldn't answer. After app. an hour the screen went blank again, and the red circling image indicating it's turning on started and has now been running for about 30 minutes. I no longer have a land line and am going to have to drive 27 miles to a store to get it fixed when I need to be preparing for the coming hurricane. I'm posting this as additional evidence that something is wrong with these phones, and they are not worth the money.

When the RAZR/ RAZR MAXX freezes, you can hold down both the Power and the Volume Down button at the same time for about 7-10 seconds, until it flashes. This is what is called a "Soft Reset". You will not lose anything because of this reset.  As far as your battery time, 24 hours between charges might be considered good. It all depends on what apps you have installed, the location and signal of the towers for coverage, etc. I take mine off the charger around 5:00 AM, and when I go to bed at 10:00 PM, I am usually between 30-60%, depending on my usage during the day.

  • Dead pixel - worth the trouble to exchange?

Will Apple give me a new iPhone since mine has a dead pixel, or is it not worth it to try?
iMac Core Duo, eMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   And an 8GB iPhone!

Can someone explain this to me? I have what appeared to me to be about 20 dead pixels on my screen. I took it to genius bar and they said I only had 3 and this was normal and that everything else I saw was natural "bleeding" that would "go away in time." The dead ones and the "bleeding" ones look exactly the same to me. Now I'm reading here that people have just one dead pixel and apple is honoring their exchange? Why not me? I have what looks like 20!

  • Exported doc. not worth the trip

Exported pdf to Word file to edit. Document integrity is so poor now on doc. that it is almost worthless. This is a trial version, but not worth paying for this if I can't edit the exported files. This can' be the norm. Any ideas?

The quality of the resultant export depends a lot on the structure of the PDF and how it was produced. There are also options under the settings button when saving the file to give you some selections relative to the structure and other issues (format versus flow and such). The success depends a lot on the original PDF. Normally this is not a recommended workflow unless you have accidentally lost the original DOC(X) file. You should always keep originals.
If the PDF was created with tags and all, as when using PDF Maker in WORD, the reconstructed DOC file can be almost perfect. So a lot depends on the PDF.
If you have used the OCR process in the PDF, then the quality of the original scan and the pixel resolution is critical to the result, as is the selection of the built-in versus created fonts in the OCR process. I assume you are using AA XI since you mention trial. However, the version of OFFICE and the OS would also be useful information in helping you.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:
    Leopard system requirements:

But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

  • Will I make my 2009 Mac desktop any more memory efficient by running current files, (not applications such as Indesign, Photoshop), from a portable solid-state drive? Is it worth the trouble? Thanks

I have a slightly old Mac desktop and it is starting to slow down a lot now that I am using Adobe CS6 software. It is my final year of a 5 year architecture course and I can't afford to buy a new Mac.
Some of my fellow students are having similar problems with laptops and are running applications and files from portable drives - they wiped their entire Macbooks clean. I don't want to wipe my computer and start again as I may lose some of my oldest software which I have lost CDs for. Will it make any difference to run just my active files, or even move my most memory intensive software programs, to an external drive?
My desktop has maximum RAM installed.
    Any advice much appreciated.

    1. OWC or Crucial are recommended sources for memory. You can usually find a 5% off and free shipping code for Crucial on retailmenot.com. On crucial just key in your system information in their memory selector.
    2. Your system likely supports SATA II speeds, so the SSD OWC pointed to would work. I installed one in our 2010 mac mini and it's working well. I originally installed their 6G drive however it ran at SATA I speeds. Turns out the 3G which is specd for SATA II is what was needed and works fine.
    3. The OWC package they recommended includes a case to put your existing hard drive in. That helps to be able to transfer your data back to the SSD then you can use it as a backup drive or as an external storage device.

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 (pre Intel) kaput - worth the trouble?

Unlike the other posts I've read here, my iMac doesn't even try to start up. I've held down the power button, disconnected and reconnected the power cord, tried a different outlet, and the ol' girl does nothing. Zilch.
I suspect she may have died. My question is, is it worth it to take it to a Mac specialist in the hopes of resuscitation, or should I just give up and get a new one? Luckily, I did copy my hard drive to an external hard drive a few days before the old girl flatlined.

It sounds as if the old girl has given up the ghost, buy a new one, make sure you get Apple Care and enjoy the wonders of intel!
Taking it in might end up costing you as much as the base level intel iMac, so just bite the bullet and get a new one.

  • The Durability of Macbooks is not worth the money.

I was playing xbox on my couch with my mac book beside me, i moved my elbow and is slid off the couch and landed on it's back and the screen slammed shut. This was probably a 1.5 ft drop into well-cushioned carpet. I pick it up and now my screen is totally dislodged by around 2-3 milimeters on the right side. Now when i open it, it makes the most dsiturbing cracking sound ive ever heard, because the back of the screen is scraping again the back corner as i flip up the screen! Ive tried pushing the screen back, but nothing seems to work! This is very annoying and if i can't fix this i am going to never come back to apple because every one drops their laptops once or twice and they aren't supposed to break when they slid of a couch onto a soft surface! Ant idea on how to lodge the screen back in place (what i mean by screen is the hole back monitor)! yah this may look nice, but my body falling from a tewtny story building we be better off! My fans make funky noises now and my screens dislodged, is closes way to easy now! and theres no way! NO WAY! im giving it to apple because i keep my life and my qork on this peice of crap! HELP ME!

It was difficult knowing if you were asking an actual question or just ranting. You might be able to use the instructions at iFixIt.com
to loosen the screen and move it back into place. I would imagine it has bent the retaining pins on the hinge and those may need replacing to get it straight.
FYI in 20 plus years of working with computers I have never dropped any computer so not everyone does it.

  • Trial Acrobat X - not worth the pain

SO, IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT TRIALING ACROBAT X . . . DON'T! YOU'LL REGRET IT.
I use all parts of CS3. I saw the trial for Acrobat X and thought, "I'll give it a spin." Big mistake. Now Adobe popups are hounding me every minute or so with "buy it now??!!" messages. Annoying. So, I think I'll just go back to using my trusty Acrobat 8 Pro. NO CAN DO! Apparently, installing the trial has invalidated the license data on my system for the version 8. And, of course it was installed from a corporate license so I don't have the CDs or any idea of what the magic codes are. So, Adobe has maneuvered me into paying full retail (since I can't prove I have a license, I can't get the upgrade discount) to use software I've already paid for.
    Sweet.
Man, Gimp, Nvu, et al are looking better and better . . . Adobe is definitely working itself out of a franchise. Any suggestions for open source solutions for PDF editing? I've got CutePDF and it works great. Just too limited in functionality.

Acrobat will uninstall any previous version - this is clearly indicated on the install dialogs, and if a user has lost the license key or media for a previous version, that's unfortunate but not the fault of Acrobat X.

  • DO NOT CHANGE FROM COPPER TO FIOS! IT IS NOT WORTH THE EFFORT OR TIME!

I recently changed over from Time Warner Cable to FIOS for one phone line while Verizon said that it would be easy to change over my original phone line (copper) that we have had for 1 years now.
Well, several weeks ago the older line was added to the new FIOS service. No problem as it worked great, until I called about being billed for the old copper line!  Yes, they were billing me for the past two months for service not rendered!  I called them on it and they said that in order to combine the accounts they have to shut off my old line, give me a brand new number, for a DAY, and then give me back my old number. YES, ALL of that to just change a bill and account!
They shut off my phone on Tuesday and here it is Thursday evening and still no phone service for the line that was working on FIOS that they changed over from copper six weeks ago or so. Now they tell me they have to give me a new phone number and have to figure out what went wrong.
So PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T CHANGE YOUR COPPER LINE TO FIOS!!! They do not know how to handle it internally as I have spoke to no less then five people, two of which were supervisors!  Wait, there is more as they even sent a tech over on Tuesday to change out a box they had already installed at the end of October!!!! Yes, they have NO IDEA what they are doing!!
Please know that I never write these things, but I had to warn people ahead of time.

    Hello jdk4asu
Sorry you are having difficulty, an agent with access to your account will reach out to you directly by email, private message in the Forums and/or the billing telephone number on your Verizon account for more information or help you resolve your issue.

  • Verizon Roadside Assistance Is Not Worth the Money

Shortly before 6pm last night, my car stalled out on a busy street in the middle of Los Angeles. I called roadside assistance, which I have paid for for years. The horrible service started immediately.
    1. The operator picked up quick enough, and seemed alarmed when I told her I had stalled in the middle of traffic. I gave her my location, both address and cross streets, immediately. However, ten minutes into the call, she still hadn't ordered the tow. Instead she asked more and more info about my account - only when I asked the status of the tow did she put me on hold to order it. (silly me, I thought that she has processed this while we were talking).
    2. When she got back on the line, she told me a tow would take 90 minutes. In the middle of Los Angeles. When I said this was unreasonable, she placed me on hold, and came back to say she may be able to have one to me in 30-45 minutes.
    3. Still another 90 minutes later, I get a call that the tow truck arrived and couldn't find me -- it was sent to the wrong address. The VZ rep, when informed of this, acknowledged it was their error.
Alas, the tow driver told me his garage was just a couple blocks away, which explains why they called this garage... but not why, when hearing of a 90 minute delay, Verizon didn't find an alternative. Like AAA would do.
I have cancelled Roadside Assistance, and signed up for AAA like I should have done years ago.

AAA is an inexpensive way to go...

  • Really Close to dumping Mozilla Thunderbird. The slowness is just not worth the hassle and the support sucks.

I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird for many years. It has always been a good system. Now, I get so when I hit delete, it takes a minute or two to delete the e-mail. I have tried to follow all the instructions on the help system and have turned off Mcafee each time I try to read my mail.
I am not a expert in computers but can usually follow directions fairly well. The fact that Mazilla's help system rely on asking questions of a group does not make it any easier to fix these issues. I see the same questions being asked by multiple people without clear answers to why this is happening.
Unfortunately, if this issue is not resolved shortly, I am going to have to dump Mozilla for another system..

Saying The support sucks is not exactly being polite towards those whom you expect some free help. I prefer to think that you are just frustrated and the offensive remark was unintentional.
It would be useful if you could provide some information about your situation, system etc
You have McAfee and say you ''turn it off'' when reading emails, you do not need to turn it off entirely, just stop it scanning emails. This will mean you do not have to keep switching it on and off.
Here are the instructions for doing this.
    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee
Please provide the following information, so that it is possible to get an understanding of your situation and setup:
    * What OS do you use?
    * What version of Thunderbird?
    * Is this an IMAP or POP mail account which has the issue?
    * If IMAP- is it a gmail account?
    * Do you have one or more mail accounts?
    * How frequently do you compact your folders?
    * When did last empty and compact your Deleted folder?
    * Do you have many folders?
    re: the Inbox
    * Is this folder used as an Inbox for new incoming mail with only a few emails in it or is it used to store a load of emails?
    * Have you set up Archive Options to archive by month and retain folder structure?
    * Do you Archive emails older than eg: a month, two months?
Please answer the above queries, so the forum understands your current situation.

  • New Pages and Numbers are not worth the money

Bought the two new versions and am very disappointed. Apple should be ashamed to pubish these versions and charge for them. I love Apple, but these versions don't live up to the standards set by Steve Jobs.

They're free downloads for anyone running the previous version. And if you don't have the previous version installed you can buy it on a major online retail store, install it, and get the new version for free while keeping the old version on your Mac. Two apps for the price of one.

Running Gmail app: Safari - 85,304K IE7 - 33,884K Firefox - 28,572K I know it's a beta, but I've noticed that Firefox seems to be the best still. It's the smallest memory footprint, it's as fast (that I can humanly tell) as Safari, and the most stand
