Nothing on desktop

My Macbook OS X Snow Leapord 10.6.8 lets me login once I start it up but once I do the default wallpaper appears but there is no icons, no file toolbar, or my right click doesn't work. So I can't get into my finder or anything. What can I do to get my icons to appear or get it to work because I can't do anything on it right now.

It sounds like a gooey annoying issue with FileVault. You can try logging in to your name with the FV master password, then see if that will let you alter the password on the account (which should fix the filevault image not opening). If that doesn't work, it //may// be an issue with teh NetInfoDB, which would end up being a step that you Archive & Install NOT preserving then open the disk image in the Previous Systems-Users folder to get to the files again. To be honest, FileVault is more of a pain than a feature.

  • Quicktime launches, appears in taskbar but nothing on desktop

Each time I launch QTPro, it appears in the taskbar but there is no application open on the desktop. When I right click the taskbar icon, there is no option (grayed out) for Restore or Maximize, just Close and Move. When I select Move, I get the 4 arrow cursor which jumps to the upper left of the desktop as if QT were there. When I left click as if to move the 'ghost' application, nothing happens and the cursor returns to normal arrow. I check the Task Manager and it shows QT running. The only way I can launch QT is to click on an actual movie file.

    Any ideas?
if you connect the drive to your AEBS, it cannot show in DU because there is no direct connection to your machine.
you should see an icon of your AEBS under the shared header in a finder window. you can mount the airdisk by clicking once on that icon, then on the folder representing your Seagate and it will mount on your desktop.
you can have the drive mount automatically @ startup by adding it to your *startup items*. go system preferences > accounts > login items and add the drive (it must be mounted to be selectable) using the little "+" sign.

  • Reverting to previous system.Nothing on Desktop.Finder opens automatically

On my MacBook there is nothing showing on the Desktop. I think I did something like doing a restart while holding down the F12 button or maybe another one. I read it somewhere. I can't remember. (The reason I did that was to solve the problem of the finder window opening automatically on startup which was the result of a software update some time in 2008.) It didn't work anyway.
In order to fix the problem of nothing on the desktop I reinstalled 10.5.6. from my installation disks. Nothing changed except that now I have a Previous System folder which takes up about 15Gig and I'm getting short on space.
So, how do I get rid of the new install, revert to the previous system and get my disk space back?
Also, any ideas how to get my Desktop showing what I have? In Preferences from the finder menu I've ticked the boxes to show Hard Disks, CD's etc and Connected servers but still nothing shows.
Finally, how do I stop the Finder window from opening automatically at startup? Whew!

you can't revert to a previous system unless you have a backup of it. I take it you don't have one. make a new user and see if everything works correctly there.
If it does you should migrate what you need from your old home directory to the new user and delete the old user.
You can delete Previous Systems folder.

  • Nothing on desktop after sleep

Every once in a while, when I wake up the computer and log in again, nothing shows up on my desktop... no icons, no hard drive, no tool bar up top. My Dock shows up, but without a tool bar, I can't restart computer or anything. I have to turn it off via the power button. Any ideas why this is happening??

First, how full is your Hard Drive.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Full start up disc? nothing on Desktop works!

    Hello,
Did a software update and now nothing on the desktop will open (folders, etc), Itunes will not work. Opens but just get the spinning ball. Internet works fine. Any suggestions????

    Hi-
    Have you tried a restart?
Things to try after an update are Repair Permissions and Repair Disk using the Disk Utility while booted to the OS X install disc.
Your title suggests concern for the harddrive capacity. What amount shows available (select the harddrive icon, in Finder/File/Get Info)?
If you used the Software Update feature to install the update, many times problems are solved by downloading the update to the desktop, and re-applying the update; i.e. install the update again.

  • Finder has crashed and nothing on desktop... HELP!!!

Help ... finder will not launch and there is nothing on my desktop! I created a new user account and the problem does not seem to exist there. I performed a Time Machine backup of the entire Mac HD (from within the new user account), ran Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions (from the Snow Leopard install disk from within the problem account) and nothing seems to work. I am a newbie of sorts on a MAC (switched from PC less than 3 years ago) and I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions? Also, when I made a TM backup from the new user account, was everything from the problem account backed up too? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, I'm still not sure how everything fits together on this mac. BTW, I am working on a 24" iMac with Snow Leopard.
Update .. icons occasionally pop back onto the desktop only to disappear when I try to access the Mac HD or click on the finder icon in the dock ... strange!!

I have backed up most of my data/documents/music etc. but I have been lax in doing so through the holidays. Therefore, there would be many things missing ...
Here's what I did: from spotlight, entered Terminal, when I saw Macintosh:~ Kat$ I assumed that I was logged in .. right? From that command line, I typed the instruction you gave, hit enter and was returned to the Macintosh:~ Kat$ line .. from there, I typed exit and then Quit Terminal. I restarted the computer and finder still will not load ... it did throw the icons on the desktop (all over the place, not like they were arranged before) ... sheese .. what a mess! Did I follow your instructions correctly?
    Thanks,
    Kat

  • Nothing on Desktop after login

First of all I'm using FileVault.
This morning I fat fingered my password three times and had to enter the FileVault Master password. It then took me to the screen were I could enter a new password. It wouldn't accept any passwords at all. I then rebooted and logged into another account to see if it worked. From here I tried to switch users to my admin account and only got a blue screen.
I then restarted the computer using the Install Disk and reset my admin password. After restarting again it accepted my password at the login window but nothing else really happened after that. No dock,no menu bar, no icons. I can however open and close the CD tray using the keyboard.
I also tried the other account again and it works fine. Switch users does as described above.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Can't  access desktop

    Hello!
I can't remember what I did, but suddenly, when restarting my iMac the whole desktop (along with hard disk icon) became empty.
I can access all folders that were (are) there thru Finder, but can't see them on desktop.
I also can't copy nothing to desktop. It is completely locked.
I went to Finder/Preferences and clicked all the items to show on desktop, I runned Disk Utility (Verify & Repair Permissions) from computer and from install disk, runned skript from terminal that i found in a similar topics here on Apple Support forums, but nothing helped.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi.
Open a new finder window and nagivate to your home directory. Select your desktop folder and press... "Apple-i". Make sure that you have permissions to Read and Write to your desktop.
If you do have permissions, and have tried everything else, a reinstall might be called for.
If you don't have permissions, reset them then restart.
If you don't have permissions and don't have permission to set them... enable the <Root> user by accessing UTILITIES (Shift-Apple-U), run NetInfo Manager, go to Security in the menu bar, and select Enable Root User. Once that is complete, log onto the Root user and change the permissions for your desktop.
Root is basically a.. "super admin".
I found that running the Verify & Repair Permissions feature in Disk Utility doesn't always change things like this.
    Good Luck

  • Blank Desktop Icons in Windows 8

I posted this in the Microsoft Windows 8 forum and was directed to post here instead.
We did look for answers before posting, but our specific issue is different than what others have had regarding "blank icons."
After updating our workstations to Windows 8, icons located on a network drive (e.g., in the "W:\ICONS" folder, where drive W is mapped to a shared folder on a server) are displayed as a blank document-- a solid white rectangle with the upper right corner
    folded down.
However, icons located on the workstations' local C drives are displayed correctly-- and if we copy the icons from the server to the workstation they display correctly.
If we go to the shortcut properties and click "change icon," the correct location on the mapped network drive is already listed and the desired icon is already displayed and selected in the window, but re-selecting the icon and applying the
change does nothing-- the desktop shortcut still displays with a "blank document" icon.
We've tried the suggested solution of turning off Windows Explorer, deleting the local icon cache, and rebooting to force Windows to rebuild the icon cache, but it doesn't help either.
The desktop shortcuts work just fine, they are just not displayed with the desired icons.
By the way, the servers are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (if that matters).

Let me ask this a different way. Can someone try the following and tell me what result you get for Step 5?
Given: A workstation running Windows 8, joined to a domain on a network.
Given: A server (Active Directory Domain Controller) running Windows Server 2008 R2. (Not sure the server's OS matters; it's Windows 8 that matters.)
Step 1: Create a dummy text file (or other dummy file) on the Windows 8 workstation.
Step 2: Create a shortcut to the dummy text file on the Windows 8 desktop.
Step 3: Edit the shortcut's properties and change the icon, selecting some icon file (e.g., WHATEVER.ICO) located on the Windows 8 workstation.
My Result: The icon displays correctly on the desktop shortcut.
Step 4: Now copy the icon file and paste it somewhere on the server.
Step 5: Change the shortcut's properties to look for the icon on the server where you copied it to.
My Result: The icon displays correctly in the shortcut properties window, but once I apply the change the desktop shortcut displays a "blank document" icon.
Note: The type of file the shortcut points to is unimportant-- you can try it with a TXT, DAT, EXE, COM, or any other type of file. The issue is with the shortcut's icon, not the shortcut's target.
Interesting Aside: If you change the shortcut so the target is the ICO file itself, the icon is displayed correctly.

  • [Solved] How to remove a transparent window on the desktop

    I am using KDE 4.5.3-1.
    $uname -a
    Linux desktop 2.6.35-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Oct 30 21:22:26 CEST 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7200 @ 2.53GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
There appears to be a transparent window on my desktop, as shown by the shadow outline in this snapshot:
    http://individual.utoronto.ca/davidshih … pshot.jpeg
It appears with different wallpapers, and I can't seem to disable it. Right-clicking brings up the same context menu as outside the ghost window. Nothing in Desktop settings appear to control the appearance of this window. Restarting does not help.
I am not sure when it appeared...

  • Poorly MBP - Booting/Crashing Issues.

    Hi Folks,
Recently my MBP has been getting more and more ill, i've spent a lot of time trying tips and tricks i've found to see if i can resolve the issue. The most odd thing seems to be that the problem only really occurs at work, when attached to an SBS2000 AD domain, at home it works fine.
    The list of issues are:
    1) Frequent system crashes, lots of apps stop responding and Force Quit doesn't always do so..
    2) Disk Images/USB Disks don't mount... the DMG's just sit there "attaching" whereas the USB drives don't mount at all.
    3) Most irritating is that i frequently have to force shut down (press and hold power button) as the apps crashing mean Finder won't actually shut down correctly. When i have to reboot most times it won't reboot properly;
    a) Some times the top bar will appear, but on the right only Spotlight, no other icons and nothing on desktop.
    b) Other times it will appear to have booted up fine but will actually have crashed totally, i.e. you can't click on any icons/dock.
    c) Some times the Dock will appear but no desktop icons.
Invariably i will have to disconnect the Network Cable, disable the Airport and also remove the external USB HDD and eventually after a couple more attempts the machine will boot up fine....
    4) Frequently the machine won't wake from sleep, i get left with a spinning beach ball of doom... I have applied the latest Firmware as i know this was an issue with early units (mine's an early model)
I've repaired disk permissions with Disk utility, run the Apple Hardware Test (came back fine) and tried lots of other little tweaks (MacJanitor etc) I downloaded a program WhatSize to see where the large files were as i was preparing to reinstall Tiger and noticed that my Entourage/Microsoft User Data Database is 22Gb! I am the SysAdmin so have a couple of Mailboxes open at once... could this rather large amount of data being sent back and forth across the network cause the problems, or are there other things i should be doing???
Please help if you can as i'm going mad
    Thanks
    Scott
    MBP 2.0Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 100Gb 7200rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Parallels

This one of the many reasons I say people should move off Entourage. Here on my personal website, I explain how:
    http://www.macmaps.com/entouragemigration.html
But the fact images won't mount, says that your mounting preferences or cache may be corrupted. You can try a different user to see if the problem persists there. At least that will tell you if the problem is systemwide, or localized to your user.
The fact it only happens at work, says something is wrong with the firmware of the router you use at work, or that the power supply at work may not be clean.
I would repair permissions and see if that improves matters as well. Do that with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.
Also don't use any other utility other than a backup utility, Macjanitor or Anacron. Utilities such as Cocktail, AppleJack, Onyx, Macaroni, Tiger Cache Cleaner can cause the issues you are seeing if run at the wrong time because system caches are constantly written to, and if one of those programs should interrupt the writing of those files, those can become corrupt and cause systemwide degradation of the sort you've been seeing. I've seen it happen on few people's machines. Most important is that you backup your data now, just in case these are also symptoms of a dying hard drive.

  • PDF form with XML data connection comes up blank at run time

    Hello All,
I am a newbie to ADOBE Livecycle 9, but am very proficient in C#.  I would like to request for your guidance on the following issue.
We have a desktop application in C#, WPF, Sqlserver. The requirement is to launch a Livecycle form from the application for the user to read/edit/save data
I have done this much so far -
Downloaded trial version of Livecycle 9
    Developed a interactive PDf form
Created an XML based data connection. Generated fields on the form using the fields from this connection.
Set the .XML file as preview source for the form
the controls on the form are boumd to the xml data source
In design mode, the form works fine, it displays my data correctly
I have created a WPF form with a button. On click of this button, I call the Process.Start(pdf-file-path). My pdf is launched properly
I have added a combo box to my WPF form. I select a parameter from this, then call a stored procedure which returns me a datatable depending on parameter passed
Using the returned datatable, I have used the datatable.writexml and datatable.writexmlschema to create my XML and XSD files. as mentioned above, this xsd is used to create the data connection for the PDF and the XML for the preview source
This is what I want to do -
Launch the PDF from my WPF form, pre-populated with the newly created XML data from my WPF form.
So basically, as the user changes the selection criteria from the combo box, the XML file data will change and the PDF file will be launched each time with new data.
The XSD format will always be constant
    Problem -
My XML and XSD get created properly, my PDF launches, but it is empty
If I change my selection criteria and run the WPF application, and then open the PDF in design mode, it asks me whether it should refresh the XML source. This means that the PDF form is connecting correctly to the XML source
So why then, does the form come up empty at run time?
    What link am I missing?
I have found some sites that help using Web applications, but nothing for desktop applications. It would be fantastic if you could point me to some help for developing Livecycle forms with C# / SQLServer
Your help in this case will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards

Oops, something happended with the above post. I will try again... I have tried your suggestion but I still get the same garbled XML (with data repeated and some values "cut in half".<br /><br />Here is what I get after decode-service and extract-to-XML-service. This is just the first barcode, the others are similar, sorry for the poor formatting, but I get a CDATA tage infront of the "istensen" value.<br />                                                              <br />CDATA:istensen</fld_ForMellemEfterNavn<br />><fld_VejNRpostByEnLinie<br />>Superroad 99, 1330 Supertown</fld_VejNRpostByEnLinie<br />><fld_PrivatTelefonnummer<br />>20724283</fld_PrivatTelefonnummer<br />></sub_Person<br />></sub_PktA<br />><fld_BlanketNr<br />>kb0371ff</fld_BlanketNr<br />><fld_BarcodeCount<br />/></form1<br />>/sub_Adresse<br />><sub_Person<br />><fld_ForMellemEfterNavn>Kim Christensen</fld_ForMellemEfterNavn<br />><fld_VejNRpostByEnLinie<br />> Superroad 99, 1330 Supertown </fld_VejNRpostByEnLinie<br />><fld_PrivatTelefonnummer<br />>20724283</fld_PrivatTelefonnummer<br />></sub_Person<br />></sub_PktA<br />><fld_BlanketNr<br />>kb0371ff</fld_BlanketNr<br />><fld_BarcodeCount<br />/></form1<br /><br />Obviously this is not a legal xml-string, so I can do nothing about it.<br /><br />I have tried using a custom .NET component (ClearImage) for reading the same form (with the barcode) I get the correct data out from the barcodes. So I guess something is wrong with the decode-service in Barcoded Forms ES when I use compressed XML. But I can conclude since the ClearImage component can read the barcodes that they are compressed correctly.<br /><br />Can you help me with getting further with this problem?<br /><br />Sincerely<br />Kim

  • 3+yr old PBook no boot, now booting -but Slloooowwwllly and maybe not fully

    O helpful souls of .mac-BBSland:
I have a just-past-AppleCare PB that has been perfectly reliable for 3 years. It's running up-to-latest-rev Panther 10.3.9 with several apps -- Eudora, FireFox, iTunes, iPodderX, notepad were running when the problem appeared. HD was only ~85% full.
Tonite Eudora claimed some strange errormsg, NotePad was unable to write to disk. Force Quit behaved erratically, so I thought the only thing for it was to force power-down. Twice after that time, the PB was able to power-up (from a black screen, give the "startup-chord" sound, go to a light-gray screen, then to the darker apple superimposed on that, then the spinning spoke under that). No further. After about 20 minutes in that state I decided that Further Action was necessary (and natch, AppleCare was closed)
I reset the PRAM per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 -- no joy. Following instructions, I held down the CTRL-APPLE-P-R keys just after pressing the PWR key, waited until I heard the startup-chord twice and then released the 4 keys. The second startup-ding was perceptibly softer.
From what I could glean from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 , resetting the PMU might be the wrong next step, so I didn't do that. The computer did in fact start up its HD, give the chord-beep indicating that the HW is somewhat OK...
Next when I started up, there was a long period where the spoke spins. Then, after many minutes, the screen went blue and the touch-pad actually became capable of moving a default-shape cursor around the screen. (I use "Mighty Mouse" to change cursor shape in my normal setup, as I recall, but things don't get that far)...
After MANY (~15?) minutes of blue-screen-with-movable-cursor, things began to move forward... buttt verrrryyyy slowly... I saw some of the normal startup screens (including a new one, "Waiting for crash reporter"). At the moment, there's a white rectangle in the center of the screen, a progress bar that's about 95% to the right, with the legend "Waiting for Printing Services"... when the cursor was outside that rectangle, it's an arrow; when it was inside, it was a spinning multicolored beachball.
I just rechecked. The screen is now black, in character-mode. White chars on black screen, atop left:
    Darwin/BSD (DrDans-Computer.local)(console)
    Login:
for awhile there I saw the occasional errormsg
    IOATAController device blocking bus.
After a few of these, I thought I should maybe blow out any dust around the kbd, so I detached it and did so. Those errormsgs disappeared.
Since I have no idea what login and pwd I should have used, I entered FOO to login, and BAR to password. I thought I was cooked.
But to my utter surprise, the screen reverted to the small cursor ATOP MY NORMAL BACKGROUND PATTERN -- snow drifts, as I recall its name.
Upon rechecking, I see the cursor has shifted to BUSY mode (one of the MightyMouse shapes specific to my login) and the top bar is beginning to SLLLOOOOWWWWWLLLYY reappear, claiming that it's DrDan's, (I have DrDan set as the auto-boot on this laptop) the time, the battery status... but as yet it hadn't turned into the expected white bar with that info in it.
Rechecking again: White bar, all normal contents (except for Airport signal status), BUSY cursor, nothing of desktop showing... Whatta cliffhanger!
And now I gots to turn in... busy workday tmw... so this is where I need to ask you folks...
As they say in the trade, *** do I do now?
If the system appears close to OK by morning, will it reboot smoothly and as quickly as before all this crap? Yeh, I understand I better back things up ASAP...
I hear normal HD sounds, and possibly a CPU fan (if there is one in this CPU). The CPU has been physically undisturbed; I use it on a cookie-sheet on my lap, so the only stresses it has been subjected to are small torsional ones.
I have my original bought Panther disks, DiskWarrior and such. No other actual MEDIA backup (natch, I was on the point of ordering a new 17" PB or at least an external backup HD, but that never happens in time, does it.)...
I'd appreciate any Words of wisdom or pointers to where such WoWs can be found... TIA folks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Welll... here's something from the Good News / Very Bad News department:
When I got home about 1:30 PM, DW reported to my delight that after 400,000-odd comparisons, it had come up with a replacement directory structure, and did I want to inspect it? I said yes, it looked file-for-file identical with the old stuff. I asked for details of the discrepancies and I could see there was a list of about 100 files, deep in the guts of obscure stuff, and media stuff, that were detected as damaged and repaired. Yayy, I said, deliverance is at hand...
So I told DW to start replacing the old with the repaired dir. About 30 minutes thereafter, the replacement process stopped. A red stop-sign alert was displayed, with this legend: "DW encountered an unexpected error while writing the replacement dir of the disk "Macintosh HD". Rebuild this disk again, preview the disk, and back up all files from the previewed disk (2164, 2659)."
I returned to the main DW display, and saw a green-checkmarked line containing the text "Rebuilding was stopped because of an error (2164)."
I looked under "ADVANCED" and read:
    DEVICE id disk0S5
    SECTORS 117,208,826
    sector size 512 BYTES
    Filesystem type: HFS (extended, jounalled)
    Model: Toshiba mk6021gas
Looked to see what the GRAPH display might be... but after about 10 min, graphing stopped; errormsg "the disk named Macintosh HD could not be graphed, an unexpected error occurred (2403, 2658)" so I hit OK.
I came back and began the disk rebuild process once more. I figure that will be another long slog that will take another day while it starts from scratch.
Can anyone shed any light on those DW errormsg codes? Are they reliably bad enough such that after the next rebuilt dir is proposed, that I shouldn't even bother attempting to replace the old with the new dir? In other words, is this HD/PB hardware hosed as far as repairable until bootability is concerned? I fear so.
Sooo... said he, hope for this HD flagging (and the entire PB, therefore) ...
The rest of this msg is just speculation. Feel free to comment or correct!
Do you think it'd be worth it to ship the PB back to Apple for a HD transfer/fix? Probably expensive, since I just dropped out of AppleCare's 3-year max...
Foo. I'm wondering whether it's worth the candle to back up 60-ish gigabytes of data to CD, or even to DVD's. Many of the files are larger, I bet, than even a single DVD... And would some one of you gurus tell me how it's supposed to be possible, given no Airport/WiFi connection between this Mac (booted via DW CD) and my LAN, to backup stuff to CD or DVD? Is it possible to eject the DW disk that I'm currently booted off of (how?) and then insert a CD or DVD and then somehow burn media? I wonder where I can find out such info, if not from you kind folks (pointers more than welcome of course!)
Perhaps it'd be better to simply suck the data outta my dead PB wholesale...
Given that I was soon gonna buy a new PB with a larger HD than 60, and hopefully an external HD for backup use... Perhaps, since DW was able to see the disk and since I got a listing of my desktop contents during the slow-boot process, my files are in there, but the thing just won't boot (and there is probably a bad sector where there must not be one, to make the system bootable?).
I've heard of "Target Mode" where another Mac (that is undamaged and able to do boot) comes up, and then (somehow using target mode) makes a connection via a FW or USB connection between it and an old, bad Mac like mine with an unbootable internal HD but with data that need saving. Would it work if I just bought a new PB and then via target mode sucked all my data files (iTunes, email etc. going back years) onto the new PB's HD? If my understanding of Target Mode is correct, it would be useless with an external HD that was not bootable on its own.
Where do I learn more about Target Mode? If I were to use Target Mode between two FW 400 PB's (or a PB with an HD?), do I need a cable with standard FW-400 male plugs on both ends?
Speaking of new PB's, has anyone heard anything good about the new Intel-based "core duo" PB? I hear it's got a brighter screen, runs real fast, but has only FireWire 400 (which is what my current PB has, so perhaps that's not an issue). How compatible is it, in other words how good is "Rosetta?" I imagine I could pay a lot less for a 17" PB G4 in aluminum, with nice fast FW. But the screen's the older technology. Any thoughts?
And what's a good source of big cheap external HD's?
Tnx for your patience with all this info.

    Ravi

    Give this a try:
    File strFile = new File(strFileName);
    long length = strFile.length();
    response.setContentType("application/octet-stream");
    response.setContentLength((int)length);
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", ("attachment; filename=" + strFileName));
    OutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
    BufferedInputStream in = new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(strFile));
    int i = -1;
    while((i = in.read()) != -1) out.write(i);
    in.close();

  • 2010 128GB MBA or 2011 64GB MBA?

I'm looking to buy a refurbished Macbook Air for the last year of college and beyond. I have a resonably good, nothing fancy, desktop and I want a ultraportable laptop I can take to campus so I can basically live in the library. I know I want to put some videos on it (maybe 5 GBs of video at a time) , 4GBs of music and a couple of old games (Knights of the Old Republic and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, which are both really old) on it, but besides that, it will be my portable internet browser/document writing laptop.
The refurbished options I have are a $799 2010 128GB 11 inch MBA with 2GB of RAM and a $849.99 64GB 11 inch MBA with 2GB of RAM. While I can obviously afford either one, I was wondering if anyone knew which one has better value: the one with most storage that's older, or the newer one with less room.
Also, I can put Lion on the older one, but it comes with Snow Leopard.
Any advice would be welcomed. This will be my first Mac I have ever bought (I do have experience with Macs and school though) and I just want to make sure I get the best value.
    Thanks.

If you can afford to wait and save for the current version, I suggest you do that.
I would recommend at least 4GB RAM and the 128GB SSD on the current 11" model.
Here is the current model in the refurb store for $999.
The current model is almost twice as fast as the previous model. Here are benchmarks.
You do know about Education pricing if you are going to college.
