Novell Client and Login Scripts?

All:
I'm a former administrator of NetWare 3.x, 4.x and 5.x systems and am
intrigued by the NLSBS 9 offering. I have downloaded the trial version
and have installed it on a test server.
Since I am "old school", I was wondering if I could use the Novell Client
for Windows XP and login scripts to automatically map shares using groups
like I did back in the day.
I'm very new to the Novell/Linux world since every organization I've
worked for in the past 10 years abandoned NetWare for Windows. I'm sure
a LOT has changed since the Linux OS was brought on board, so I thought
I'd ask.
Thanks,
Greg

Not sure. It would depend on whether Novell is still offering a product upgrade to the OWS from Windows 2000 SBS and what that price looks like. Otherwise, I was more thinking about the software side itself, re: the Linux side. Either way will work. Just work out the figures.
>>> <[email protected]> 5/23/2006 5:02 am >>>
I guess I'm looking at it this way: If I purchase the 5-user upgrade
license of NLSBS for $211.00 which includes upgrade protection, then
according to Novell, I can upgrade to OWS for free after July 31st. A 1-
user license for OWS at CDW is about $125.00. $125.00 x 5 = $625.00.
Is my logic flawed?

  • Error same login (novell client and VO)

We have some problem about as below:
We use Windows XP SP2 and install the Novell Client on them. Log on to the Novell NetWare 6.5 SP6 server already and we would like to use Virtual Office (1.6.2) by using browser (IE6, IE7, Firefox). We can authenticate when browse to Virtual Office.. they look like smoothly but we could not authenticate when we click the file button (NetStorage). It will show the authenticate form Username and Password. We couldnt use the same login name for authenticating this form (same = login on novell client and login on VO>>file)BUT.. if we use another user for authenticate the NetStorage on Virtual Office by using browser.IT CANWHY?????
What happen about our Virtual Office or NetStorage on NW6.5SP6?
Please recommend us for solving this problem and thanks.

Is it possible that you are using concurrent login limitations for your users? That could prevent you from using a web based login if you are already consume a workstation based login.

  • Install Novell Client and ZFD client question

Currently I am doing an unattended install of the Novell client and then a
login script install of the ZFD client. Is there a way to install the novell
client and then kick off the install of the ZFD client before rebooting? Or
would this cause more trouble then its worth?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Novell client for linux - scripted install and configure

the novell client is included in SLED11 SP1
the configuration files are in /etc/opt/novell/ncl (esp login.conf)
I want to script the configuration of the novell-client. Some of the things the interface yast - Novell client does, is:
    modify /etc/pam.d/gdm
    create /lib/security/pam_ncl_autologin.so
    ... and maybe more....?
according to Novell Documentation there should be a make_novell-client-conf_rpm Bash script but i cant find it in any of the recent clients (download) nor on the SLED installation.

    Code:
    if [ ! -z "$1" ];then
    sed -i "s/Default_Context=.*/Default_Context=$1/" /etc/opt/novell/ncl/login.conf

So far this is working well.
The novell login needs to be run once, and on the advanced tab, have the session saved. This then auto runs afterwards for each logon.
    as a troubleshooting tool, I :
    Code:
    cp /etc/etc.1
    rsync -avP etc* my-pc:/tmp/
i can then use krusader to compare files (on my-pc), but most importantly, after doing something (eg yast ldap). rerun the rsync line and and it will tell exactly which file(s) changed, so you know which ones to check/keep/alter/etc
    hope this helps.

  • Trying to create user template and login script

I'm trying to setup a machine at work that's got an Admin account and a Student account.
I want the student account to have limited privileges and to reset the desktop, dock etc. (user template) upon login.
I've got a document here that was created by a former employee that states the following:
Create a user template: (do this from the admin account)
    *Sudo ditto /Users/Student /Student/Library/User\ Template/Student.lproj*
Upon entering this into terminal I was getting a message saying the real path was wrong, and now nothing happens when I enter the above.
Ok, so in: "system/Library/User Template" there is a folder called Student.lproj
Within Student.lproj there are no files.
Should Student.lproj even exist there with no contents for this to work? When Terminal creates a template, does it copy this information into Student.lproj or does it create a new folder for the template?
The account is hanging for quite a while on Login and logout now as well.
Once I create this template for the Student account, I need to create a login script that will restore the template upon login of the Student account.
    please help

    It's /System/Library/... not /Student/Library
Also, if you want it to reset at log out, just have them log in as Guest.

  • Win 7 + Office woes + Novell Client, and SR responses

    Hi.
We are running Novell oes2 Servers spread over 3 main sites.
We have tried various versions of the client from IR4 to IR9a? we are having problems with office files over our WAN. With windows 7 the big problem is that not all the time but quite often, when you open a file over the WAN you get a message saying the file is locked, and it's nearly always by yourself if you say notify when it's free, you have a 15 to 20 second pause and it will then reopen and allow you to write to the file. The sites are connected via a 20M a 10M and a 6M link. The lines can be 95% idle and you still get this problem it doesn't appear to be at all related to the bandwidth in use on the network.
On one of our sites it happens quite often locally, on the other two sites, only when accessing files over the WAN.
I opened a SR for this on the 2nd of November and put an update on it on the 14th of November asking for an update... So far no-one at Novell has added anything to this SR. I know we pay our 20% or whatever it is per year for updates etc... so how long should I expect before someone replies?
    Cheers

    Hi.
Thanks, we have already tried that on one PC it fixed it, on all the others we have tried it on, it hasn't resolved the issue but it's greatly reduced the issue. It was 95% sure to happen before those changes, after doing that it's down to 50/50.
    Cheers

    If so try this:

    Remove the tick from Preview
    Remove the tick from Details
This, coupled with IR8 & IR9 solved the issue for us.

  • Novell Client integrated login fails on reboot.

I have LUM, NCL and CASA enabled and everything works just fine. I can log
in as a user, save the profile, log in and out and get integrated login.
The problem is that if i reboot SLED and try the same user that worked 30
times in a row before it complains about "ncl_autologin[716]: Tree "" not
found in miCASA." and fails to do the integrated login. If i look at the
profile in the client everything looks just fine and i can login without
errors if i supply the password again.
In the Casa store i can see the tree and the password.
I have SLP setup on the OES server and slptool on the SLED box connects to
the OES server and works properly. All three buttons on the linux client
works and finds trees, contexts and servers. I have reproduced the error on
three different hardwares with different media for the install.
Have anyone else reproduced this error? I have followed the documentation
to the letter but integrated login still just fails after every reboot i make.
Any ideas no matter how longshot is much appriciated, i just have to get
    this working.

I have a group of users i try with and it looks the same on all of them
regardless of what i do. CASA stores the info and when i reboot it looses
something that i cant really see. I have three computers with SLED on now
and they all look exactly the same when i look in CASA and compares the
info on a rebooted and a non rebooted computer.
I will do a trace on the .miCASA files and see if i can spot any
differences between a rebooted and a non rebooted computer on monday.
One question, does it work for you after a reboot?

Ah, ok, I see that now. Then possibly it was the other options that my
collegues sometimes saw - I think I didn't ask precisely...

What is the best way to check this? If "Sychronize" in Admin Console updates
"Contact information" correctly the association should be all right,
shouldn't it? Additionaly I check LDAP DN in "Diagnostics". I did not see
    any problems there.
I seems that only users with clients before 12.0.3 HP1 are affected; as soon
as users upgrade to 12.0.3 HP1 or 14.0.1 HP1 login works as before.

  • Cisco VPN client and Novell and Panda AV

I have found an issue with one of my clients PC's that prevents him from using network resources over the VPN tunnel.
    PC
    Win XP SP2
VPN client - 5.0 (Newest download)
    Novell - Client 4.91 SP4 for win 4.91.4
    Panda AC 4.02.40
    Ok here's what happens
I made a PCF file for a handful of users to connect in and be able to access 2 servers.
On the machine with the above information installed. It will connect to the VPN. Everything seems fine but if I RDP or ping access to the server it will not go. I then installed it on my machine and it works.
So I fully investigated the one PC that doesn't work. I noticed in the TCPIP stack of both the Ethernet card and the Cisco adaptor. There is a Novell client and a panda client.
Now if I uncheck one or the other it works. (I know there's posts about panda not working and the posts are 2 years old) It will work with just panda or Novell. When I check both it fails.
Now has anyone seen this issue with these two products installed on a machine with Cisco VPN.
Also, who should this go to, Novell, Panda or both?

I stated i did that and it works. Each one works when its the only thing checked.
    Thanks

How can I clean up the mess which installing this client has caused?

I've never had problems with uninstalling Novell Client, although I

  • Experience about life without Novell Client?

    Hi,
got anyone a wider experience about OES Infrastructure without Novell
    Client and W7 Workstations?
We didn't need absolut highest performance but an absolut stable and
    reliable Environment (24h Healthcare).
    - Is Performance with CIFS Access to OES NSS Cluster Ressources comparable?
    - Is availability comparable (in special Cluster migrations, Filelocking
    on Files)
Today we run ~250 XP Workstations on OES2
    Cluster/Filesharing/iprint/Zen7 and Groupwise.
Now we are going to ZCM11 and W7/64bit and think about avoid to use the
Novell Client for Windows to reduce complexity and switch on Client Side
to AD-Domain and use OES Infrastructur only for the "Backend".
Most Novell Services (Groupwise/iPrint) are going to auth to AD too, so
why should we use Novell Client and the NCP Protocol anymore?
Is the NCP Protocoll so much better against CIFS in current OES
Implementations (i'm no Expert in this Things).

What would you like to know?
Most infos are on my first post.
We get more and more Windows Applikations who need a Windows Server as
Plattform for Services, Shares and Authentication.
In the past we create lokal "system" Accounts on these Applikation
Servers and map there Shares with help of the Loginskripts.
    like map use R: \\app-server\files password /user:<systemaccount>
But now we are low on Drive Letters...
So now we think about to bring the Applikation Server and Windows
Workstation into AD-Domain for using same User Accounts/Passworddatabase
and use the UNC Syntax for this kind of Applikations.
Or we use some Applikations/Infrastruktur who use "transparent" Login
with AD Authentication (sp. Citrix) or use this as Authentication Point.
And that's our thoughts about CIFS and Novell Infrastractur in General.
    Regards
    Thomas

  • Novell Client help

I just finished setting up my tree in edirectory and Imanager. I installed Novell Client and when I went to login it said the tree couldn't be found.
It is frustrating because I don't know what's wrong.

The Novell Client installation after eDirectory may have broken eDirectory
if it's all on windows. eDirectory uses a new version of NICI, and the
Novell Client may still ship with an older one. Also, the Novell Client
typically installs NICI in client mode (of course) where eDirectory
requires it to be in server mode, and while the client can live in server
mode, the server cannot run in client mode.
I won't bore you, again, with my comments on platform choice. You're in
for a ride as you can see.
Hopefully you're in a VM and can revert a snapshot. Otherwise you may
want to call support to see if they can help fix this. There may be a TID
by now on this, but I haven't seen one lately. You may be able to
reinstall eDirectory, but on windows the eDir install both installs the
binaries that run the service as well as configure a tree, so you may need
to recreate the tree for this to work.
    Good luck.

  • Removing Novell Client from Windows 7

    Hello,
We have an issue with programs running slowly on our SUSE Linux server 11.0. We set up a test machine with Windows 7 without Novell Client and the same programs run extremely fast. (They run fast on a Windows 2008 server too with or without the client.) This is great for the new test machine but I have about 20 workstations that need to have the Client removed. If we remove it through control panel (both NICI and Novell Client - whatever version is installed) the programs are still slow. However, if we do a restore to the time before the Novell client was installed, the machine is fast. Because these machines have had the Novell Client installed for months, we cannot go back to an old restore point. Is there some registry file or other file that needs to be removed or changed to make the computer like it was installed without the Novell Client? I really do not want to have to rebuild 20 computers in order to fix this. I have researched the web and forums and cannot find any information about anything else that needs to be changed when the Novell client is removed. FYI - this is the same on our few Windows XP machines with the appropriate last updated Client on them.
    Any help would be welcome!
    Susan

We have had many issues with the Novell Client / Windows 7. Here is what we have done to get to an acceptable point.
We are running OES 11SP1 fully updated up until July (Getting ready to apply more updates), we are also talking about switching from CIFS to Samba as we have been seeing some weirdness with CIFS and NSS disconnects.
OES11 SP1 - Primary File Server NSS with CIFS
OES11 SP1 - DSFW/DNS Server for Domain Authentication for the CITRIX Servers, this server also runs ZCM 11.2.2 (Also going to update this as we need windows 8 support and the ZCM Agent has some issues at this level; however ZCM has a horrible way to apply updates and is time consuming)
OES11 SP1 Squid Proxy With transparent user authentication using LDAP with SquidTrust. Also has NSS Shares
    Other servers exist as well.
We standardized on Novell Client 2 SP3 or Greater. Currently SP3 IR3 is what is in use. But prior to SP3 the client had many issues for us.
Also, We do not use Group policy with ZCM (We tried But it was painful and slow and policies would randomly just quit working / remove themselves) we reverted back to just digging in and finding the registry keys. If a key only existed in the Policy Section we put it there and do a GPUPDATE /force on login.
    Server Settings:
    Disable OPLOCKS
    Workstation Settings:
    NW Client Settings
    File Commit (Enabled)
File Cache (Disabled) - NW Client Setting
Name Services DNS / SLP Only (Default on the newer Netware Client)
    Win7 Machine Settings:
Static DNS Server - Set to the internal servers only. No external server set. The win 7 machines for some reason would use the secondary DNS Server randomly instead of the primary, never really dug in on why but disabling / removing a public DNS Server as the secondary and adding in a second internal.
MS Client For Microsoft Networks Remove, We tried changing the preferred order on the network adapters with no help. I believe the fact that we are running CIFS on the Server side the client is having issues with deciding on how to connect to the NSS Volumes when the client is installed. With the MS Client removed we see a huge improvement In the Novell client.
Libraries Disable - Registry - We redirect Documents Folders and such and these libraries are wanting to index the locations. As the Libraries consist of multiple locations.
    Offline Files Disable - Registry
    Windows Search Disable Registry (Service)
Zone Mapping - Registry Adds the servers & domain to the Trusted list for the OS (Even though it says Internet Explorer its used by other portions of the OS)
    User Access Control Registry
I have others that helped but this is the short list of changes that made major improvements.
When I have a moment I will look back and see if there are other major changes. This is just what I remember.
