Now running Firefox 4 recently synced my bookmarks and worked ok BUT now they have vanished. I neeeeed them back!

Can't really tell you much more.
The bookmarks synced well between my desk & lap tops about three/four days ago.
Now Bookmarks is empty on both machines???
Your guesses are pretty accurate

First, you may want to make a backup of your profile folder. It contains not only your current bookmark list, but a folder of backups. But these are not saved forever. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (For example, copy your bookmark backups folder, or your entire profile folder, to a safe place outside of the Mozilla folder.)
The following article has suggestions for recovering bookmarks: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost%20Bookmarks#os=win&browser=fx4 Lost Bookmarks | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help].
