Numbering chapters in nested books

I have tried all the options available to me, but FrameMaker keeps getting it all wrong. There must be a way to do this, but I cannot figure it out. Maybe someone else has experience with this and can point out where the solution is. Or maybe someone from Adobe can explain what the thinking behind the book numbering scheme is, so that I can figure out how to adapt it to my needs.
Here is the setup (simplified): I have a master book with a couple of chapters and some nested books.
master book
chapter 1
chapter 2
nested book A
chapter A1
chapter A2
chapter A3
chapter 3
nested book B
chapter B1
chapter B2
chapter 4
I cannot use folders or groups as the nested books must also be available as separate books for publishing to the online help system. This is the reason for choosing books over groups or folders in the first place. In the online help system I do not need any chapter numbering, so everything works fine. But now that I also need to produce a PDF, the numbering logic (or lack thereof) is giving me a hard time. I want to get consecutive chapter numbers in the entire book, regardless of whether the chapters are in the main book or a nested one. I am running a script to explicitly set the numbering on each chapter as follows:
master book
chapter 1
chapter 2
nested book A
chapter 3
chapter 4
chapter 5
chapter 6
nested book B
chapter 7
chapter 8
chapter 9
Setting all chapters to use the following number makes all the nested chapters come out with the same chapter number. This must be considered a bug, which means I need to find a way around it. I have tried all other options (setting the chapter number explicitly in each of the nested chapters, and setting the numbering properties of the book components to "read from file"). But when I update the book, FM keeps complaining about inconsistent numbering in the nested books, and telling me it is using the numbering in the main book. I either get all chapters in the nested books showing the first available chapter number or the last one in that nested book. If I tell FM to not update the numbering, it looks OK (as I have done the numbering explicitly for each chapter) but when I save to PDF, even when setting DoNotNotifyAPIClients to true, FM messes up the numbering before creating the PDF.
Does anyone have an idea on either the numbering scheme logic, or how to tell the Save as PDF to keep its fingers off the numbering as it currently appears? It would be really useful if I can get an answer TODAY. The deadline is approaching and this project must be finished before Xmas.
Thanks in advance
Jang

That is what I have done in the end. I guess nobody has been using the nested book feature in a production environment where PDFs of the overall book are required. Or they are using volume numbers for the nested books. The hassle in the new book solution is that the table of contents and possible indexes will have to be regenerated as well. If the structure of the top-level book does not change once it is created, this only needs to be done once. But I cannot rely on that, and I cannot rely on the customer being able to redo the work without running into all kinds of trouble. So my script will have to handle all possible corner cases. I have done it in the past and it is really a hassle to do it, either manually or programmatically. Oh well, it's all in a consultant's day's work, I guess.

  • Help please with Page Numbers & Facing Pages in Book Layout

I am having some dramas with my book project which is 168 pages including cover.  I have created 22 different documents for the chapters and other pages.  I had everything in a book and have been able to create a PDF, but then I needed to remove the cover so it can be printed separately and to change the page numbering to start at 1 after the contents page.
When I added numbers after the Contents page, it pushed all the pages out of order - ie what was previously sitting on the left was now sitting on the right etc.
Removing the cover also impacted on individual spreads.
    Since then I have:
    - Updated my program to resolve an issue where Indesign kept shutting down when I tried to change page numbers.
    - Recreated the book twice, but find the spreads are all out of whack as I add them - doesn't appear to be auto paginating.
    - Called Adobe and got given tutorials that have not helped me resolve the issue because I have followed the tutorials but it hasn't resolved the issues I am having.
Is there a way that you can stop autopagination and tell the pages which side they need to be on?  I currently have one chapter finishing on an even number of pages and the next starting on an odd, even though there are an even number of pages in that chapter, which is bizarre?  How do I fix this please?
I would sincerely appreciate anyone who can tell me how to fix this.  I have read and watched so many tutorials showing how to set it up but there doesn't appear to be any that help with trouble shooting when you have followed the process but something bizarre happens.
Is there a way that you can dictate the sides that the pages should be on?  Can you turn off the auto pagination anywhere?  This is an urgent request.
    Thanks,
    Hayley
PS  I started in CS6 and am now using CC.

    A few things to consider:
Not all books are the same, but many begin on page one, which is a right page, and as it follows, all odd pages will be on the right with even pages on the left. If your book had the cover as part of the book, I wonder if that meant that your first page was on the left?
Books leaves hold two pages (front and back), and therefore book page counts need to be divisible by two. You say your book is 168 pages including the cover, which you moved to another document, leaving 167 book pages. If you were counting the back page, that might make for a 166 page book, which would be OK, but depending on how it will be printed, the page count may need to be divisible by 4, 8, 16, or higher, and the printer may need to add blank pages to get to the correct page count. Can you tell us how your book will be produced?
Many people like to keep  their chapters in even-numbered page count, so that new chapters may start on the right. This sometimes requires you to have a blank left-sided page at the end of some chapters. This blank page is sometimes labeled "This page intentionally left blank" or some such wording (so as to let the reader know there wasn't a misprint), but isn't strictly necessary. Sometimes an ornament in the center of the page will do the same job.
Do you think these are things you would like to have in your book, or are you opposed to them for any reason? The answers may narrow the advise you get from the forum users.

  • Table and figure numbering in multi-chapter book

Using InDesign CC 2014 I am editing a book that consists of 23 chapters. Each chapters are added to the book separately. There are 5 levels of titles, level 1-4 is numbered (first level is the chapter title), the 5th is not.The numbering of the titles in chapters works very well, but I have problem with numbering of figures and tables.
The numbering of tables and figures should look like this: Table 1.1., 1.2., etc, Figure 1.1., 1.2., etc. The first number is always the chapter number, the second is the number of table/figure in order - within the chapter. I want the second number to re-start in each chapter. But if I select "continue from the previous number" (or something like this - I have Hungarian version, tried to translate to English), the numbering does not re-start with each new chapter, however gets the correct ^H number. If I select "start", all tables and figures will be ^H.1.
My question is: what should I do on one hand to be able to use (and sync) all formats (including tables' and figures' captions with numbers) in the whole book, in the same time making the figures' and tables' numbering having ^H followed by a number re-starts in each chapter? For this, the table and figure number should be which level on the list? What to do with "restart numbering at this level after" option?
I have searched the www from A to Z and back but could not find the answer. Please, help me! Oh, and please, write the how-to description step-by-step (maybe illustrated?), as I use Hungarian version, which makes applying the suggestions a bit difficult. Thank you, in advance, for your kind help!

Darn Framemaker and its use of phantom numbering placeholders.
But seriously thanks - worked line a champ

  • Chapters In Audio Books??

Is there a way to implement chapters into audio books that act like skipping points? If I have a rater long audiobook it would be helpful to not have to fast forward all the way through because I accidently hit the "skip" button or something. (I already have the ability for it to pick up where I left off)

I dont know how to do that. But i can help on your accidental "skip song" problem. Press the center button once or twice, and then you can use the click wheel to scroll through the song or book.

  • How to Export from Numbers 09 to Address Book or print mailing labels?

I need to know how to export contact information that is part of a Numbers sheet to Address Book and to be able to print mailing labels. I do not have to print from Address Book but do need to produce address labels. I've tried a number of things from the help menus in Numbers 09, Address Book, Word and Excel for MAC 2011. I probably just don't have a grasp fo what I'm supposed to do. Thanks much!

    nushuz,
I can sympathize if you're having trouble following the directions. Address Book will reject what looks like a perfectly good CSV file if it doesn't like the data it finds inside.
Here's what I have found to be the best way to create a CSV from Numbers for Address Book import...
Drag an Address Book contact to a Blank Sheet in Numbers. That's a Sheet in which you have deleted the default table.
This will give you a properly formatted table for conversion to CSV, and you just have to add all your contact data to the table you just created. Before you begin though, it's a good idea to Unhide all Hidden Columns, and there are probably many. Hover over any Column Label and click the menu triangle, selecting "Unhide All Columns", or words to that effect.
After you have all your data situated in the table, Share > Export > CSV and then Import to Address Book.

  • Hi, i have problems with audiobooks, chapters from diffrent books stand togheter, the book is mixed with another book, does someone know how to fix this

If i synchronise one book there is no problem,
when I sinchronise more books then chapters from diffrent books stand togheter.
In I-tunes the books are not mixed.
In my  ipod classic the books are mixed.
I use the latest version from i-tunes
I work with windows vista pro NL

The easiest thing to do is to make a playlist for each book. I have about ten audiobooks on my iPod and have the same problem with everything being put together in one long list. The iPod does not treat each book as it does an album by grouping each audiobook in one folder, it just lumps them all together in one long list.

  • Page numbers in a photo book / keepsake

Can anyone tell me how i can get page numbers to display in a photo book? In the help section it says that i can go to settings and turn this function on, however, I don't have that option in there. I need it to make a slideshow preview for others involved to review pages and make suggestions to layouts. They need to be able to quote the page number that needs adjusting.

The page number setting it the bottom check box in the settings menu - if it is checked and you do not have page numbers displayed on your pages then they are not available with the theme/layout you have chosen
See Liz Castro's web page for samples of each theme and the layouts for each theme - http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/pmwiki.php?n=Main.Travel - I'm not sure she specifically addresses page numbers

  • I need help with the numbering pages in a book file

I have a 53 chapter book that which each chapter is its own document. It used to work great. The page numbers of each document used to continue from the last page number of the previous document. That was until today when I opened it and all the page numbers now start at one. I don't know what to do. I have checked all of the options I knew to check. Each document still has the 'automatic page numbering' option selected. I truly don't want to have to go through and manully renumber every document. It will take time I do not have. If I can get somebody's help, it would be wonderful.

Nor do I. It sounds like everything is set correctly. You might want to try creating a new Book file and add the individaul documents into it and see if that fixes things. Also, have you tried updating the numberingfrom the menu since this started?

You cannot edit PDF files with Adobe Reader; you will need Adobe Acrobat.
If this is a one-time task, download the trial version of Acrobat, which will be fully functional for 30 days.
However, normally such a task should be performed on the original document, before the PDF is created.

  • Automatic page numbering not working in book files

Hi. Using CS3, I have successfully created a book in the past, where the dialog box of the book file shows consecutive page numbers for each file.
    e.g file 1 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
file 2 5-22 (indicating 18 pages, starting on page 5) etc.
Files automatically renumber if I insert pages, etc.
This next book I am creating has two problems:
    1. the book file dialog box shows
file a 1-4 (indicating 4 pages, starting on page 1)
file b 1-6 (indicates 6 pages - STARTS ON PAGE 5 AS IS IS SUPPOSED TO, in some cases - see problem 2).
    I've followed the protocol below:
For the first document, I select "start page numbering at" and enter "1". For the rest of the files, I select the automatic page numbering radio button.
Why won't the dialog box reflect, for file b, pages being 5-11 as it is supposed to? This will get very confusing as the document gets larger.
    2. I created a document by resaving an initial file as a new file in order to create additional documents, keeping the same master but changing content. Even with the automatic page numbering radio button selected, some of these files start on the wrong page (e.g. 5 when the file is supposed to start on 12), after I select Update Page and Section numbers from the book dialog drop-down. I can't figure out what may forcing an override of this page numbering and am looking for a pointer in the right direction...thank you,
    Erin

I am having the same exact problem as Erin. The page numbers don't even get updated correctly on the documents within the book.
I'm using InDesign CS3 5.0.3 on Win XP.
For the first document in the book, "Start Page Numbering at:" is set to "1." "Chapter Number:" is set to 1.
For the second and third+ documents in the book, "Automatic Page Numbering" is selected, as is "Continue from Previous Document in the Book."
In the Book panel, all documents show page "1-x". When I open the second and third+ documents, the page numbers all start at page 2.
Any ideas? Please tell me this is a documented bug because it's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

  • Is there a way to export data from a numbers worksheet to address book

Is there a way to export data from a numbers worksheet to address book

Yes.  Address Book provides help for this operation:

  • Using Numbers as an Address Book?

I do not yet have iWork 08, but I was wondering if I can use Numbers as a second address book, with email, contacts and web pages etc. I would like to be able to copy and paste addresses straight into mail as you would from address book.
I am really just trying to separate my address book into work contacts versus personal, and with work contacts, I need to index them into several categories. I know I can do this with smart groups in address book, just looking to create 2 separate books as mentioned earlier.

As Pages is trying to "speak" to the AddressBook program, I assumes that it would not be a good track to duplicate the app.
My guess would be that you may solve the problem with an AppleScript allowing you to swap two sets of AddressBook data files.
    The idea would be to:
    enter the folder:
    <bootVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Application Support:AddressBook:
    create two subfolders
one named "dataSet1" and one named "dataset2"
move the five files existing in the folder into "dataset1".
After that, launch AddressBook to build a new set of datas.
When this new set will be OK, move it into "dataset2".
    This being done,
when you want to work with the first set, duplicate the contents of dataset1 into the standard folder
when you want to work with the 2nd set, duplicate the contents of dataset2 into the standard folder
Of course, before replacing a "set1" by a "set2" it would be safe to copy the set1 into dataset1 to protect the "recent changes".
It's a bit of trickery but it is a viable approach.
It's the way I would work if I was using Bento. Doing that, I would be able to use different documents to store different kinds of infos.
