Numbering PDF documents

I am trying to number documents through a program called "Bates Professional" from an Adobe Acrobat PDF document. The original document is password protected. I put in the password but it says it's not correct. I believe that the Adobe Bates Professional program is not reading the PDF. You can open the PDF and read it, but I cannot number it. Any thoughts?

I tried to remove the protection, but it asks for a password. I put in the password that the client gave me for the records, but that’s not the correct password. I don’t know if the password that Adobe is asking for is an Adobe password or something else. I inadvertently wrote that “Bates Professional” was an Adobe product. I know that it’s not.

    Thanks.

    OK, I found it myself:
    1. Tools - Pages - Edit Page Design - Header & Footer - Add Header & Footer.
    2. Select the font and size, etc, place the cursor on the appropriate site to insert the page number, click the "Insert Page Number" button, and click OK.
    That is!

After I do this, the "Convert To" box goes "gray" and I am unable to convert the document I have selected.  It was working great for the first week that I used it, but now it doesn't give me the converting option.  I am very frustrated as I have done nothing to change anything, and I was thinking this was so great...now I am just pulling out my hair and do not have the option of calling anyone since no phone numbers are listed. I am VERY busy and do not have time to sit and wait over a half an hour to "chat", which I tried to do yesterday.  All I want to do is very simply, convert pdfs to Word.  I have paid for this and am not getting any help. I am not very savvy when it comes to Adobe this program and Adobe that program...I feel I am being scammed as I do not get simple answers for something that appeared was going to be simple. Hello Kathie,
    Sorry for the inconvenience that has caused to you.
    Please let me know if you have tried converting any other PDF to word with Reader.
    Alos, please sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/" using your Adobe ID credentials. Click on 'ExportPDF' tab and upload the PDF that you want to convert to Word.
    Let me know if this converts fine.
    Hope to hear from you.

  • IWeb • How Do I Make Links in an Embedded PDF Document Open in New Page?

    On this page http://ostyn-newman.com/Gov_Downloads.html I have a PDF document that is embedded.  I tried an IFrame, but everything seemed to work better for me with the "Embed" code.  I am open to changing this if it would be better.  Here's my problem.  I can get the PDF document to display fine, but when I click on the links in the PDF document, the destination page opens in the embedded window.  I want the links to open the destination in a new window.
    I created the part of the document with most of the links (Pages 8.5 - 56) in Numbers and cut and pasted the table into a Pages document to create the completed document on our site.  I exported the docuemnt from Pages as a PDF file which is what you see.  There is also a link to download the file on the same page which works just fine.
    I have tried to insert the target="_blank" code but have not been able to get it to open the destination pages in a new window.  I am inserting the code by using the Insert/Widget/HTML Snippet Feature in IWeb.  Here is the code I am using.
    <embed src=
    "http://ostyn-newman.com/Media/GS27F0026XTextfile.pdf"
    style="width:850px; height:1000px;
    border-width:0px;
    border-color:#FFCC66;
    border-style:solid;"
    scrolling="auto" >
    </embed>
    I am not a coder and have just used Google to find the code to cut and paste and have played around with it to get to the place I am.  If anybody can tweak the code I have or offer some totally new code for me to insert that will get this to work would be greatly appreciated.
    Please keep in mind that most of the people who visit and use this page are government employees and are almost exclusivey using Explorer.

    Thank you Jeff,
    I tried your original suggestion and now my inserted html widget reads
    <embed src=
    "http://ostyn-newman.com/Media/GS27F0026XTextfile.pdf"
    style="width:850px; height:1000px;
    border-width:0px;
    border-color:#FFCC66;
    border-style:solid;"
    scrolling="auto" target="_blank">
    </embed>
    It is live on my site.  You can see that the embedded document still opens the destination links in the embedded window.
    As for your other two suggestions, thank you as well.  I am aware of those techniques and did not use them because that is not how I want the other PDF links on the page to behave.  The catalog and autocad blocks downloads in the box at the top should simply download (or behave however the client's browser is configured to handle downloaded PDF documents or zip files.)  I don't intend to force those to open a new window.  I could also have our client click on a link to the PDF document and open it in a new page (like in your second suggestion) but I was hoping to embed the PDF and have it automatically viewable on our Download • Terms • Prices Page with all of the PDF search functions intact as well as the links be active.  My only complaint at this point is that the links in the embedded PDF document open the destination page in the embed window instead of a new window.  I only want to force a new window because the destination window doesn't behave properly when it opens in my embed window and it is difficult to figure out how to go back to the my PDF document when a destination window gets opened in the embed window.  The code you sent didn't do the trick.  Or maybe I didn't get it exactly right.  That is why I included it above.  Thanks for trying though.  I appreciate the effort.
    I would be willing to bypass the imbed/iFrame route altogether if I could just somehow drop the Pages document into the IWeb page and retain the search and link features, but I've not been able to figure out how to do that.  When I was exploring how to directly drop a Pages document into an IWeb page is when I stumbled on the method of embedding a PDF document into an IWeb page to retain the important search and link features.

  • How do I check the version of a PDF document?

    Is there some relatively simple method to determine a document's PDF version?
    To be clear, I mean the document itself, not the application used to create it.
    I'm trying to store PDF documents from external sources in a document repository.
    Its manuals are unclear on Adobe Acrobat version support, although I have had problems with Acrobat v 9 in the past.
    My source provided me with PDF documents that I was told were saved as versions 8, 9, 10 and 11 from Acrobat Pro XI.
    Acrobat Reader XI is the only Adobe application I have and I don't want to write an application simply to confirm the PDF version.
    When I open the documents using Reader XI and check their properties, I see the following:
    nominal 8.0:  PDF Version 1.7 (Acrobat 8.x)
    nominal 9.0:  PDF version 1.7 Adobe Extension Level 3 (Acrobat 9.x)
    nominal 10.0: PDF version 1.7 Adobe Extension Level 8 (Acrobat X)
    nominal 11.0: PDF version 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)
    The last one doesn't make sense, but I have another PDF saved as v 11 from Acrobat Distiller 11.0 that shows the same version in its properties.
    So my questions:
    1.  Is the Acrobat properties display accurate?
    2.  I'm particuarly concerned about the 11.0 PDF documents since their Acrobat properties don't match the version they're supposed to be.
    3.  Is there some other way to check a document's PDF version (other than writing an application), e.g., opening it with a text editor and finding a version string?

    1. I have no reason to doubt it, the task is pretty simple.
    2. You should realise that these are not rewrites but progressions. PDF 1.7 adds just a little to PDF 1.6, and so on. Early versions of Acrobat would always update the version number to the latest version, whether or not they needed to do so. More recent versions have got smarter. Sounds as if XI is smarter still and is writing the version number actally needed rather than just the highest number it knows. People have strange ideas about PDF version numbers and sometimes want to do things like "open and save in the latest version" but this is not just useless but meaningless.
    3. In many cases the first line of the PDF contains the version number (but not the extension number), but this need not be accurate as a later piece of information (much later and harder to find) can override it.

    There is a warning about a malformed topic. I have seen projects  where there is nothing wrong with the topic but where the machine needed more RAM. What are the basics of your PC?
    Also try turning off PDF and generating a Word document instead. If that works, PDF from there. Does that work?

  • How do I repaginate a PDF document in Word 2008 for Mac?

    I am trying to repaginate a PDF document made in Word 2008 for Mac, which I have uploaded to Scribd for public perusal.  Unfortunately, whatever I do to the settings for the document it always comes out in reverse order. (60 - 1 instead of 1 - 60)
    The problem is not with Scribd, as they just reproduce the document in the order in which it is sent.  Somewhere along the line, the pages are reordered. They are not numbered in the document.

    Hi,
    Try this AppleScript :
    It will create a new PDF file (the name will be "the original Name + _reverse.pdf"), it reverse the pages order.
    Open the "AppleScript Editor" application.
    Copy/paste this text in the window :
    set a_PDF to POSIX path of (choose file with prompt "Select a PDF file to reverse the pages order." without invisibles)
    do shell script "export VERSIONER_PYTHON_PREFER_32_BIT=yes
    /usr/bin/python -c  'import os, sys, Foundation
    from Quartz import *
    this_pdf = CGPDFDocumentCreateWithProvider( CGDataProviderCreateWithFilename( sys.argv[1] ))
    if this_pdf is None:
       print \"Error reading PDF document\"
       sys.exit(1)
    tName, ext = os.path.splitext(sys.argv[1])
    new_file = \"%s_reverse.pdf\" % (tName)
    cfstr = Foundation.CFStringCreateWithCString(None, new_file, Foundation.kCFStringEncodingUTF8)

  • Cannot place a signature on a PDF document

    I just encountered an issue with a specific PDF issued to me by a vendor. I am normally able to "place signature" on any PDF document. This one however, only allows me to place a certificate-based digital signature. How can I go about simply placing my signature on the document?
    I also do not have my serial number as I purchased the software as an option through Lenovo. They don't have my serial numbers and neither does Adobe evidently. Not the greatest customer service experience I've had.

    Your specific PDF may contain hidden signatures. For instance it may be Reader-enabled which includes a signature. It seems that the rights enabled by the PDF's author do not include application of stamp signatures. When you open this PDF in Reader 11, if the PDF is Reader-enabled there is a button on the top of the left pane which when you click it tells you which rights this PDF has. You need to contact this PDF's author (your vendor) to get this resolved.
    I do not understand what the serial number has to do with it.

  • Looking for a way to re-organize pages within a PDF document....

    Hello All.....
    First time posting here and a new user to Acrobat X Pro so bear with me as I try too explain my issue. I receive via email, a weekly PDF report for work that contains up to 200 pages in each file. Each page is basically a "Lead" that contains, in order of importance as they relate to me; an upcoming date in time and Trustee information. When I open up this file the pages are listed in chronological order by date only and cover a time-period of about 5 days. The trustees information is randomly placed through-out the document, so pages 1, 3, 5, and 10 may be one trustee and pages 2, 4, 6, and 9 may be another trustee. Complicating matters is there are upwards of 12 trustees information spread through-out every report. So..... if the 1st 50 pages of this PDF document are for 3/6/2012, all of the trustee's information is randomly scattered through-out these 50 pages. Make sense?? Here is what I am attempting to do.....
    First, I am extracting all of the pages of this report that have the SAME DATE and creating a new file. When this is done the extracted pages are then deleted out of the original file. If the original report contained information covering 4 days, at the end of this step I have 4 new files; and this is where I am getting hung up. What I was hoping to do now, is go into each file and rearrange the pages to be in order of the Trustees information. I have tried the "Advanced Search" function which will allow me to search the entire file for a trustees information, which works. I just can't figure out if there is something I can do after that. I would't even mind creating another file similiar to what I am doing above for each trustee, but unfortunately that extraction only works if the pages are in 1,2,3... chronological order. Going through and extracting each page one-at-a-time would be cumbersome and time consuming at best, so that is not an option. Does anyone have any thoughts?? And please feel free to ask me for more information. I was hoping to be able to upload a sample page of this report for you all to see, but it appears that you can't upload a PDF file... Go figure!! Thank you for your time.....
    Justin

    There are several ways to handle a task like this, and a custom script is certainly one of them.  It looks like you are using a Mac, though, so that will limit your options somewhat.  As a result, I'll stick with Acrobat's native features for a solution.  I am going to assume that you have Excel, though, as it's the real key to solving this problem.  Notepad can be substituted for any text editor.
    My understanding is that you want to end up with a document that contains the entries for each particular Trustee, listed in chronological order.  It's not clear to me what specific form your output document should take, but I'll give you enough information to solve the problem, and you can adjust from there.
    First, rather than deal with the problem by date, I would do it by the Trustee's name, instead.  They're already in chronological order, so no need to reinvent the wheel.  Someone did that work for you!  So, in the advanced search function you're already using, search for all of the Trustees at the same time with a multi-term search.  You can create this in a text file that you can re-use in the future.  Next, save the results to a CSV file.  Open the CSV in Excel, and delete all of the extraneous content except for the "page" and "seach instance" columns, which should ultimately occupy columns A and B, starting at row 1.  Next, sort the search instance column (Trustee names) either A to Z or Z to A (however you want them grouped for output), and then by page number, in asecnding order.  This will leave you with a new page order from which you can extract the pages that contain your Trustee names, which will inherently be in chronological order.
    Next, take the column of page numbers, copy, and paste special, transposing the data into a single row on a new worksheet in Excel.  Delete the initial worksheet, then save the CSV.  Finally, open the CSV file with Notepad, and you'll see that you now have a row of page numbers, separated by commas.  Copy that data and paste it into the pages field of the print dialogue in Acrobat, which will allow you to print those specific pages, in that specific order, to a new PDF.  If you had a page splitter script (like the kind try67 makes) or plug-in, that would be a little more efficient, but either way take you to the same place.
    In the end, you'll have a subset of the pages in your original, 200 page PDF, "sorted" by Trustee, with each Trustee's data sorted chronologically.  If you want to break them out by Trustee, just create a bookmark at the first page of each Trustee's data (perhaps referring back to the CSV in Excel) and split the file out by bookmark with Acrobat.
    I have used similar methods to complete tasks that range from impractical to impossible in my book, "The PDF Litigation Guide."  Hope that helps!

  • InDesign CS6 PDF Issue: Unsearchable PDF document

    Hello all,
    I have an issue that I've exhausted with days of Google searches. I have a text catalog created with ID CS6. Sections were PDF documents given to me from our engineering department. The book was created, exported and all went well until I found out that when I try to copy and paste the text into Microsoft Word or Note Pad, I get a lot of small boxes in place of the letters. When I try to search the text in Adobe Reader, I can't find words which I can see are there.
    This is the first catalog I've created in CS6. Previous catalogs created in the exact same manner in CS4 & CS2 do not have this issue. I thought it could have been the infamous Arial Narrow font issue and researched that to death.
    Any ideas would be most helpful. This is a 1300 page catalog that customers cannot search.

    1. LAUNCH Adobe Acrobat
    2. Using the File menu, OPEN the corrupted document. (I don't know what to do if you're not even able to open the file. Sorry!)
    3. (VERIFY that Acrobat can't search the document, in case you haven't done so, just to avoid unnecessary work.)
    4. EXPORT: Once the document is open, use the File menu again, and choose EXPORT / IMAGE / PNG. Your corrupted pdf will be saved as a series of images with the file extension ".png", one for each page of the pdf document. Don't worry, they will be numbered automatically by Acrobat, and they aren't terribly large. My document was 200 pages long, so I got 200 little image files in .png format. The export may take a couple of minutes. You won't get any further signals from Adobe to tell you it's done--just go look in the directory that contains the original and see if it made png files with names like:
    chemistryBook_Page_001.png
    chemistryBook_Page_002.png
    5. COLLECT: Once you have the image files, collect them all by cut and paste into their own directory.
    6. OCR: Under the Document menu, choose OCR TEXT RECOGNITION / RECOGNIZE TEXT IN MULTIPLE FILES USING OCR
    7. ADD FILES: You will be shown a dialog box with the title "Paper Capture Multiple Files" with the subtitle "Run OCR on a set of images. There is a button that says "Add Files". Click this button, choose ADD FOLDERS, and browse to the folder that contains your png files. Highlight that file, click OK. The files will then appear within this dialog box. Make sure that the files are in the proper order, or you will be sad. Click OK.
    8. CHOOSE OUTPUT OPTIONS: Now you will get a dialog box entitled "Output Options". You have several choices to make here:
    TARGET FOLDER: Click "Specific Folder", then Browse to your folder full of images, click "Make New Folder", name the folder (something like "CHEMISTRYBOOKIMAGEFILES" so you can find it easily and know what is in it, click OK.
    FILE NAMING: Click "Keep Original File Names". This will preserve Acrobat's automatic numbering of your files--you will need that to get the page ordering right! UNcheck "Overwrite existing files" just to avoid a terrible mishap, unless you are very pressed for disc space or unless this is your 5th time attempting to follow these instructions and you've already got 'way too many duplicates of the output files. If you have the disc space, just make new empty folder for your 6th try.
    OUTPUT FORMAT: Select "Save File(s) as Adobe PDF. Click OK.
    Now wait for Adobe to execute optical character recognition on the image files. Its output will be one little pdf file for each little image file that it OCR's.
    9. COLLATE THE FILES INTO ONE: Under the File menu, select COMBINE / MERGE FILES INTO A SINGLE PDF. This step is optional; maybe you wanted a bunch of little files, or maybe you wanted to divide your enormous original document into 2 or 3 more manageable documents. To divide the file, just make a separate directory for the png files you want in each smaller final document, and repeat steps 6 through 9 for each directory. BE CAREFUL WITH NAMING! Make sure you choose a unique name, because if you got something wrong, you will want to be able to go back to your original corrupted pdf and try again. If your original is named "CHEMISTRY.PDF", please remember to name this new file something like "CHEMISTRY-FIXED.PDF".
    If you really despise pdf, you can try using different output formats in Step 8. I do hate pdf, but I chose pdf for two reasons: one is that I had more confidence that that pdf would retain important features like charts and graphs and labeled photos in my document. The other is that I was so so so so SO tired of doing all this pdf crap instead of the chemistry work that I'd gotten the ebook to help me with that I didn't want to do anything fancy with file formats at this point. Let me know if you try output to rtf or ascii and get good results.
    10. TEST: Open the merged document(s) in all of the pdf readers and web browsers you will want to use with it, and try searching with it. Use your file browser and try to search for text in the directory with a word you know the file contains. Searchable? Good job, you're done, cheers!
    Not searchable? Oh noes! Check that you opened the correct document (maybe you opened the original by mistake). Try the entire process again. If that doesn't help, try the entire process again, but output to plain text this time. My apologies, but, being a complete newbie myself, I have no further advice on this topic.
    NB! My output PDF is of rather low quality. It looks like it was literally scanned from a 10th-iteration paper copy. Don't know how to fix that, after the fact or somewhere in the above process. It's good enough, so I'm just dealing with the shakey blurriness. I seem to remember somewhere that I could choose a high quality output, but, again, I didn't want to do anything fancy with vectors and rostering and layers and other terms that I don't know before I verified that I could do something basic and get back to chemistry asap.

  • How to extract inline styles from a PDF document using Acrobat 9?

    I have a requirement for extracting all the contents along with the para level and character level styles from a PDF document in the form of XML. While doing so I'm getting lot of additional tags. In addition to that I'm not able to find the inline tags (character level tags) like bold, italics, superscripts etc and the page numbers. It would of great help if someone can throw light on this.
    Thanks.

    Moved to Acrobat Forum.
