Numbers sorting problem

I know that this problem may have been asked before but I searched and could not find a similar situation.
I have a spreadsheet that will not sort the contents of a cell correctly. As an example, the table has two columns, the first is formatted as a date, the second as text data. I enter dates in random order and just put a, b, c, d etc in order in the second column. Selecting one cell in the second column, I add background color and a black line border.
When I sort using the date column, the color background moves with the letter but the black border stays at the original cell address.
Is this a bug, or have I missed a setting somewhere?

Yes, it does do that. Without documentation saying what it is supposed to do, it isn't proper to call it a bug. Maybe that was an intended result. Seems kind of strange to move the fill color but not the borders but I can think of examples where you might want it that way, or the opposite way, or for both to move or neither to move.
Edit: I note that Excel 2008 does the same thing. Therefore it makes it very difficult to call it a bug. I do not know if Excel has any settings to change that behavior. To my knowledge, Numbers does not.

  • Numbers sort feature leaves 10-20 rows unsorted

I am new to Numbers and having trouble with the sort feature. I have approximately 150 rows I need to sort by descending number in column B. When I choose sort descending from column B, only rows 20+ sort properly. The first several rows (sometimes 10, sometimes more) are repositioned, but are not sorted in descending order.
It appears to be a random number of unsorted rows each time. These rows are not being counted as header/footer rows. What am I doing wrong?
Below is a screenshot of what I get instead:
    Dallas County, Texas
    6.16272662955231
    Camden County, New Jersey
    7.53842289268443
    Bexar County, Texas

District of Columbia, District of Columbia
    12.0803018122768
    Norfolk County, Massachusetts
    11.7036709563547

Is it possible that some of these cells are formatted as text and others as numbers?
The table above has the cells formatted as text and sorted descending.  It is correctly sorted in descending order based on first character: 9,7,7,6,1,1 and then the second character, etc..  A mix of numbers and text would look all messed up with the topmost cells being numbers sorted numerically and the bottommost cells sorted as text.
I am not sure this explains your problem.  The sort you are showing doesn't seem to fit the pattern unless some of the text "numbers" have leading spaces or something.

  • Sorting Problem in FND_MENU_ENTRIES_TL Table

    Hi,
FND_MENU_ENTRIES_TL Table storing the record FND_MENU_ENTRIES_TL_N1(MENU_ID,PROMPT,LANGUAGE) wise in R12. But whereas in 11i, records stored FND_MENU_ENTRIES_TL_U1(MENU_ID,ENTRY_SEQUENCE,LANGUAGE).
I am confused, whether i need to recreate the index in R12, so the records will get store MENU_ID,ENTRY_SEQUENCE,LANGUAGE wise.
Could any one please suggest me how to resolve this problem.
    Thanks,

  • Sorting problems in Grid View

Hi, I'm having a bit of a sorting problem when it comes to an artist with name variations. The example I'm going to use is DJ Tiesto.
There are album I have where he is credited as DJ Tiesto, and others where he is simply Tiesto.
In the end, I'd like these albums sorted chronologically under one name (say DJ Tiesto), while still preserving and showing the proper artist name for each album. I have it set to sort by "Album by Year", which is working fine.
The major problem I am having is that I can't get it to display properly across all iTunes viewing methods: List mode, Grid mode, and Coverflow.
I've tried leaving the Artist field alone, and changing the Sort Artist field to "DJ Tiesto" for all songs, and that almost works:
-List mode groups them all under "DJ Tiesto", while showing each albums Artist as the correct artist name.
-Grid mode sorted by Album groups them all under "DJ Tiesto", while showing each albums Artist as the correct artist name.
-Coverflow sorts them all in chronological order, while showing each albums Artist as the correct artist name.
Problem is, Grid mode sorted by ARTIST creates two separate artists! Some for DJ Tiesto and some for Tiesto!
To correct this I tried changing the Album Artist field for all songs to "DJ Tiesto", which solved that problem but created a bunch of new ones:
-List mode is still correctly grouping them under "DJ Tiesto", while showing each albums Artist as the correct artist name.
-Grid mode sorted by Album is still correctly grouping them under "DJ Tiesto", *however now it is not displaying the correct Artist name for each album!*
-Grid mode sorted by Artist is now grouping them all under "DJ Tiesto", *however it is not displaying the correct Artist name for each album!*
-Coverflow is sorting them in correct chronological order, *however it as well is not displaying the correct Artist name for each album!*
Using the Album Artist tag has created more problems that it has solved! Is there anyone who knows a way to achieve what I am trying to do? I have tried seemingly every option I can and have still not found a way to do this!!
    Thanks!

My own method of working involves renaming the files upon import to:
    i "shotdate_sequencenumber"
    Files are therefore typically named
    b 2007-11-25_001
    etc.
This way, sorting by Filename automatically sorts by Date by default. And it wouldn't even matter if you added a descriptive text in between the date and number (
    b 2007-11-25_Scotland_001

  • Sorting problem in standard vendor search help

    Hi all,
I'm enhancing the vendor search help.
I found that there is a sorting problem in the original standard search help.
The 1st time to search vendor in the search help returns a correct list, then I just sort the vendor in ascending order. This time the column name of the hit list changes and mismatch the actual values.
Any one faced this problem before?
    What's wrong are there ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Peluka.
But even I don't enhance the vendor search help, I still found that the original standard version has this problem after sorting.
    Is that the program bug?
Have anyone encountered this problem before?

  • Using Numbers to shedule sort problem

I am using Numbers to schedule the times that groups perform at an event I am organizing. If I make a time change to a group Numbers has also tagged this with the date of my entry and this affects the sorting. Is there a way to turn this off? I have set the column so that only the time shows but the date of entry still affects the sorting.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm new to Numbers as well, and trying to get my head around the effects of the different time/date treatment from that of AppleWorks.
You may find useful information in the Numbers User Guide supplied with your copy of Numbers. Try searching "timevalue". The TIMEVALUE() function is discussed on page 282, but the search will bring up a number of pages that may offer alternate solutions.
Also, check Yvan's post What you wanted to know about Time values in this forum.
    A possible solution:
Click on the header row of an empty column and enter the following:
    =IF(ISBLANK(time),"",TIMEVALUE(time))
After entering the formula as shown, Select the word "time" then click on the column header or column reference tab for the column containing the scheduled performance times. repeat for the second word "time". Click the checkmark to confirm the formula.
Click on the column header cell of the column containing the formula and enter "Sort" (without the quotes, and with or without the capitalized S). Use this column to sort the table.
    Regards,
    Barry
Note: Performances scheduled for after midnight will sort to the top of the list. There's probably a workaround if one is needed.

  • Numbers filtering problem

    Hi guys,
I have a problem with numbers' filtering function here.
    1. I have a table of about 150 rows and 6 columns.
    2. The data consists about 42 categories and I wish to sort out each item.
    3. when I chose the column and try to filter the table, I found there list only about 22 items on the pop-up list.
where are those missing items ?
Could someone help me with this?
    Mike

Though the pop-up (or drop-down or whatever it's called) list maxes out at only 22 or so items, you can work with larger numbers in the Sort & Filter panel at the right.

  • Ios 5 playlist sorting problem

I'm having a problem with my iPhone 4S playlist sort order after restoring from a backup from my iPhone 4.  I have several playlists that I want sorted first, so I've put numbers in front of them.  On my iPhone 4, the playlist sort order is correct:
    1
    2
    3
    4
    A
    B
    C
However on my iPhone 4S the order is:
    A
    B
    C
    1
    2
    3
    4
I can't seem to be able to put my numbered ones first anymore!  Anyone know what the problem is or a solution?

  • Sorting problems

I just updated my iTunes to version 12. After it was finished, all my song titles and genres remained, but every song was from an unknown artist and album. I am now going through 1,100 songs and reentering the information. Pain in the butt, but not the biggest deal in the world.
Here's where the problem lies, and I will use Ariana Grande as an example. Under the sorting tab, I entered "My Everything (Deluxe)" as the album, Ariana Grande as album artist and Ariana Grande (either alone or who the song is with) as Artist. I removed all the track numbers, year of CD release and unclicked compilation. I also leave all the sort as categories blank... as I have done in the last versions of iTunes. HOWEVER, now when I view the album under my music by album, it's all together under the album "My Everything," but when I go to view Ariana Grande under my music by artist, it's all separated. I have 3 Ariana Grande's and each has different songs, all from the same album. In the version before, it would show her as artist only once and had her entire CD under her name, because she was the album artist.
    HOW DO I FIX IT????

Hi there I have exactly the same problem as you... but even more nasty.
To start with I have recently purchased an album of the Flashbulb that's not sorted in iTunes or on my iPod under the T's but under the F's just between 2 other artists: Feist and Florent Pagny...
All my other artists with names starting with The are classified correcly in T's.
Now the nasty thing. In French "Le" is the translation for "The". Standard masculine article.
However still both Itunes and pod, all my artists with a name starting with "Le" are classified under the third letter: Led Zeppelin is therefore sorted in the D's just after cyndi lauper.
Imagine in English, an artist called Theo Martin that would be classified in the O section because his first name starts with "The".
I know that there is an option like "artist sorting name" but you can't do a mass update on it and I have to go through each single song and change it.
Is there a way around it?

  • Jsp paging & sorting problem

    hi all,
i am facing a problem while displaiyng my pages. i hav a list of records of which i have to display a predefined no of records at a time, say 6. i am getting the list from database and then putting it in session. on my page i would give links to page numbers to view next set of records, much like what google does.
now this is working fine. i have an option on my page to sort the set of records, the sorting being done by my query. problem arises when i use this sorting functionality, the sorting is performed on the entire list, not on those which are displayed... the example might make things clearer.
    if i have a 6 records and i display 4 records at a time, so on my page 1 i will be able to view record no. 1, 2, 3, 4. now when i sort them i see record no. 6, 5, 4, 3. ideally i would like to see the records 4, ,3, 2, 1.
i hope things are clear....what can be done to tackle this...
    thanks in advance...

    Abhi,
I was wondering if you could explain this to me:
    <% request.setAttribute( "test", new TestList(10, false) ); %>
on my application, I use database query to get all the data. the method returns vector of objects (query results). Can I use vector instead of List?

  • Data Sorting Problems !

When i Generate reports from reports builder 6i and select a column for order by which datatype is varchar2 then if, the data is like below
    a1
    a2
    a3...
    a10
    a11...
    a20
    a21
Now problem is it comes like bellow
    a1
    a10
    a11
    a2
    a20
    a21
    a3
And there it is not possible to set order by as row id.
    How i solve it ?

Using your example, you would need a separate column that contains only the numerical portion of the column values. In other words, your columns would look like -:
    Column 1 | Column 2
    a1 | 1
    a2 | 2
    a3 | 3
    a10 | 10
The forumla needed for your second column would be something like -:
    CAST(RIGHT(Column 1, LENGTH(Column 1)-1) AS INT)
Using this, you should be able to sort your second column and hide it from view. This should give you the ordered sort you are looking for.
If your column 1 has another letter series (e.g. b1, b2, b3 etc), then you would need to create another column - as per Shilei G's suggestion - to strip the numbers from the letters. You would then sort first on the letter only, and then on the number.
    Hope this helps.

    Cameron

  • Sort problem in a report

    Hi,
I'm using the sort on a report with 7 columns. For each column I've specified
the sort sequence from 1 to 7. The last sort is a date field. If i sort now the
last column and i change to next report side the sort change jump to the first column.
Is there somebody who had also a problem like this?
    Greets,
    Tom

You can check boxes to determine which columns can be sorted; if you check one or more boxes, you also need to set the "Sort Sequence" attribute under the "Report Attributes" tab of your SQL query region. So to use sorting you must.
    1. ensure you don't have an order by in your SQL statement
    2. check one or more "sort" boxes
    3. set the default order in one or more column in the "sort sequence" column
    Hope this helps,
    Mike

You can't upload the template here; you can post a part of the relevant XML code and template code here.
or send me a sample XML and RTF template to [email protected] and I will take a look.
