NVIDIA 1.0.9631 segfaulting [solved]

Since updating to 2.6.19 with the new NVIDIA driver, X startup segfaults with the following error:

    UPDATE:
Reference Gentoo bug for temporary resolution:
    https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350336
I can't seem to run any openGL apps any more after a recent update. Current nvidia driver 275.09.07-1, tried kernel26 (from testing), kernel26-ck, and kernel26-bfs same results. Running glxinfo or glxgears causes a segfault (noted below). Most GL apps note "error 4 in libnvidia-glcore" before immediately quitting. Running on 64bit system and nouveau drivers handle GL like they should without error.
    glxinfo[2121]: segfault at fffffffffffffff8 ip 00007fd314348754 sp 00007fff5294cdf0 error 4 in libnvidia-glcore.so.275.09.07[7fd31336d000+15d4000]
    glxgears[2123]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00007fffcc652938 error 14 in glxgears[400000+4000]
Anyone else having this problem? Thinking about a bug report.

I thought that the xorg server version could be the issue in some strange way so I updated my laptop and everything works fine on it. Using the same nvidia driver and kernel as the desktop (albeit slightly different graphic card). Strange. I'm not nor have I been using LTS, and the xserver has been upgraded since last month- not sure why this would happen all of a sudden.
    UPDATE:
Downgrading to to the nvidia package version 270.41.19 fixes the problem. I think it's specific to my model video card (GeForce GT 220). An issue with nvidia has been entered (Issue Reference #110628-000170)

I have no idea of what to try... any insight?
Solved, it was really stupid. For some reason my Multilib repo got disable in the pacman config. So the 32bit nvidia drivers were old...

Yeah, sorry I didn't notice this post sooner, or I could have saved you some trouble shooting.
After testing and discussion on NVIDIA forums with someone else having the same problem, we realized that it is apparently a problem with any Xorg 1.7 release using Xinerama with a monitor positioned Left of another display.
The person I was talking to said he bugged it, and rearranged his monitors right of.  I downgraded to xorg 1.6 and haven't given it too much though since.  I should probably follow up on that and submit a bug to xorg or something...  or you are welcome to!
Works great with Xinerama turned off, which is actually a fine option for me since I don't tend to move windows between displays, except I am using Xinerama to work around an xmonad bug in handling multiple non-Xinerama displays.  I would have never caught it if I hadn't tried turning Xin on to fix the xmonad issue right before the 1.7 upgrade and gotten curious why my setup started going crazy (since I have a monitor with two monitors to the left of it)..
One thing that also works is making your left most monitor screen 0 and setting the other two monitors to be RightOf it, or at least that worked for me.  Unfortunately, my left most monitor is a 46 inch tv that is often turned off or on a different input, so I can't really have it being screen 0.

  • Xorg 1.6, nvidia brokenness w/ dual monitors [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I upgraded this past week to xorg-server 1.6.1-1, nvidia 180.44-1, and kernel26 2.6.29.1-4.  When I rebooted today I found a few things are broken:
I have a laptop and external monitor dual screen setup where each screen is a separate x screen, as setup by nvidia-settings.  After upgrading if I hold down any key for half a second or more (to trigger key repeat), my display on both monitors goes black and my mouse and keyboard stop responding (can't switch terminals, can't kill x...).  Resuming from xscreensaver also triggers this same problem.
Another oddity is that when I move my mouse cursor from one monitor to the other a lingering "copy" of the cursor stays on the monitor I just move away from at the transition point to the other monitor.
If I physically disconnect my external monitor (w/o changing xorg.conf) X displays none of the problems listed above.
My xorg.conf is below.  Most of it is probably not useful, although I should point out that I have input hotplugging disabled w/ AutoAddDevices false:

have you looked at /var/log/xorg.0.log for warnings and errors?
you need to get rid of ..
        Load           "type1"
        Load           "freetype"
If you want independent X screens you need to get rid of..
        Option         "Xinerama" "1"
or change "1" to "0" or "false"
For two screens you should only need two device sections and you have three.
Alot of people are having good results with a minimal xorg.conf with the new xorg-server. I can't really say too much about it as I still use my xorg.conf, although I could probably cut it down quite a bit.
It looks like your xorg.conf needs a lot of tweaking. Or you could just delete most everything in it and let autoconfig do it's thing. Then just add little by little till you get everything working.
Not sure how much it will help because i'm not using a laptop, but rather a desktop, but here's my working xorg.conf set up with nvidia and three seperate X screens.
    # Xorg configuration file altered by Leigh
    # Updated (Dec 2008)
    # Three independent screens
    # Three cards... (GeForce7900 PCI-E, GeForce6800 PCI-E, GeForce4 MX PCI)
    # Monitors... (Two Dell 2005 FPW's, One NEC MultiSync FE1250+ CRT)
    # Note: (Due to GeForce4 MX, I need to use the legacy nvidia drivers, nvidia-96xx.)

  • No HDMI Audio from PNY Nvidia G210 Card - Please Help [SOLVED]

    ***** It's now working! *****
Thanks to some of the posts on the XBMC and Ubuntu hardware forums. I picked up a lot of pointers.
When using this card with XBMC, There is no need at all for an /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf with probe masks etc. and there is no need for a /etc/asound.conf either (if you are going to just use XBMC like me for your HTPC setup)
All you need is ALSA 1.0.23 installed and at least be running kernel 2.6.34. aplay -l should reveal multiple (4) Nvidia devices as shown in my previous text further down this post, this is fine, however only 1 of these Nvidia devices will actually deliver sound to your TV via HDMI.
In XBMC, goto System Settings, Audio Settings, set device to "Custom" and enter only ONE of the following and then try and play a movie or music in XBMC... (My G210 Nvidia soundcard is card 1 as I also have onboard audio at card 0 so bear this in mind when applying this method to your setup e.g if your HDMI soundcard is card 0 then the first thing to try is plughw:0,3)
    plughw:1,3
    plughw:1,7
    plughw:1,8
    plughw:1,9
My PNY G210 card worked using a "Custom" device in XBMC of plughw:1,8
If you are not using XBMC and are using for example a Gnome desktop then you can apparently get sound working by using the text in the code box below in your /etc/asound.conf (this will ensure alsa defaults to the correct card and sub device for hdmi audio) again ensure you are using the correct card number and device number. You can validate this by testing audio as follows from the command line "speaker-test -D plughw:1,8 -r 44100" and simply work your way through the 4 devices until you find the one that works.
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm {
    type hw
    card 1
    device 8
Given the amount of testing and reading I have done on this, I wouldn't be surprised if this method works for any G210 Nvidia cards and HDMI audio, as the logic seems sound (if you'll pardon the pun! :-))
Hopefully someone will find this helpful.
Original problem text below this point......
    Hi Guys,
I am about to give up on this as I cannot get HDMI audio to my TV no matter what I try.
The card is a PNY Nvidia G210. I am running Arch Linux x86_64 and ALSA 1.0.23 and Nvidia driver 256.33
    aplay -l shows

Everything for the Nvidia HDMI is un-muted in alsamixer.
I've tried the tips from the wiki here in terms of probe masks added to sound.conf but still no joy. http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO_set_ … ,_or_GT240
I've also tried the tips from this post here and still no sound. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=90350
Disabling the motheroard onbonard Intel Audio makes no difference and manually compiling and installing the very latest ALSA driver makes no difference.
Has anyone got HDMI audio working on this card under linux?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer as I have now run out of ideas and if I can't get this to work will have to revert back to my old ASUS EN9400GT card which takes s/pdif from the motherboard for audio out to HDMI.

Works for me too! in my case it was plughw:0,7.
    Thank you ever so much!

  • Nvidia-Settings skips needed resolution [SOLVED]

I've been messing with xorg.conf for a long time now, since my first days back on Ubuntu. It is something I hate, but something I've learned how to manipulate pretty well. For some reason, 1360x768 is completely skipped over in "modes" in the Nvidia X Server Settings. It is declared in the "mode" list in the xorg.conf, and as the virtual screen. Xorg.conf:
    http://pastebin.com/rtVEyn69
I'm not entirely sure why it is being skipped. I am currently stuck at 1024x768. Emerald also doesn't work, but this is not something that concerns me, just an added detail.

    Here's what I see in Xorg.0.log:
Line 131 says that nvidia is not reading the EDID of your monitor.
Line 148 sets the virtual screen size to 1024 x 768
So... the EDID is information in the monitor that says "Hi my name is Mr. Monitor and I like this list of resolutions and I have this refresh rate and I enjoy long walk on beaches."  Either that monitor does not have EDID information or else the driver is having problems reading it for some reason.  It really doesn't matter and isn't something all that uncommon especially if it is an older monitor.  So then Nvidia says "If you aren't going to tell me anything, I'll just have to guess."  And promptly proceeds to guess wrong.  This is the part about the virtual screen size - you can't have a resolution bigger than the virtual screen size.  So if it is guessing that the screen is 1024x768 and setting the virtual screen size at that, that is the highest you can do.  No matter how much you beg and plead in your Screen Section of xorg.conf, saying "Come on and give me some lovin'.  I want a bigger resolution, please.  With sugar and a cherry on top."... no matter how much you plead, it will look at that virtual screen size and say, "Sorry. I don't know of anything that big, but I'll tell you what - I'll give you as big as I can think I can go, instead.  My virtual size is 1024x768, so thats the best I can give you."  And so, like an ever-faithful puppy, X gives you the best it has to offer.  And unlike that puppy, X does not poop on the floor afterwards.
So that is how the story goes.  The moral of the story is that we need to tell X and Nvidia that your screen can do better than Nvidia is guessing it can.  And since your monitor does not have the EDID to tell it this, we must tell it this.  This is done through the use of Modelines.  Basically, you go online and find a Modeline calculator... such as http://www.arachnoid.com/modelines/    ...then you tell the calculator what resolution and refresh rate you want to add.  If X is correctly guessing most of your resolutions, you don't need modelines for them; you just need the modelines for the resolutions you want to add in.   Then you put the modeline that is generated into your Xorg.conf, under the Monitor section... you can see an example of this on that website down below where it goes into detail on what a modeline is.
Hopefully once the modeline is in place, when X starts up it will see the modeline and say "Here's a piece of info on my monitor... i think i will use it."   It then will check that modeline against the horizontal and vertical refresh rates that you specified in your xorg.conf (HorizSync and VertRefresh) to make sure that you aren't trying to trick it into doing something the monitor is incapable of.  If it passes the test, then that resolution is added to the pool of resolutions for the monitor, and then the virtual screen size is set to the largest resolution in that pool (which you made the modeline for) and everything is peachy.

  • Can not start x after installing nvidia 173.14.x drivers [SOLVED]

After installing nvidia-beta (version 173.14.05-5) I am unable to start x. I receive the errors:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
I have tried the installer directly from nVidia itself and I receive the same results. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Pacman segfaults(Solved by re-install)

Performing ...pacman -Syy... syncs correctly and exits.
    However, ...pacman -Syyu.... segfaults.
    Performing pacman -S grub2-bios...segfaults.
Since the first instance above was correct, there seems to be a failed DNS problem when attempting anything else.
Latest kernel in place and trying to grub2-install to system.

If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
    on your system.
If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

  • T430 NVidia GPU not listed in device manager

Hello -- I have a problem regarding the NVidia NVS 5400M inside the Thinkpad T430. I use Windows 8. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but the NVidia card no longer shows up in Device Manager and the NVidia driver (both the standard driver from their website AND Lenovo's Optimus driver) refuses to install, complaining it can't find any compatible hardware. Device Manager does not list any graphics cards or unknown devices, and as far as Windows is concerned the NVidia card does not exist.
    Here's a summary of what I see:
In Discrete Graphics mode -- my Linux installation (which uses native NVidia drivers) works fine and uses the NVidia card. Windows 8 boots and runs with a generic graphics driver; there is a performance hit, and no graphics cards or unknown devices are listed in Device Manager. That's the problem I want to fix.
In Optimus mode -- Windows 8 boots and runs with the Intel integrated graphics (Intel HD Graphics 4000) which is listed in Device Manager. Again, no other graphics cards or unknown devices are listed.
I appreciate in advance any help towards getting the NVidia drivers installed successfully!
    Solved!

Yep, still doesn't appear that the NVidia drivers from that package are installing. If I boot in Optimus mode, only the Intel card is shown in Device Manager. I'd like to not have to use Optimus and just stay in Discrete Graphics mode if possible because Linux support for Optimus is not very good.
Would completely uninstalling all the drivers possibly help?
Before you go through that hassle, try the following:
    1. Go into the BIOS Configuration Display setting and change it to Discrete only.  If you see a setting just below display that talks about OS detection, disable that as well otherwise it will try to flip back to Optimus.  F10 to save and exit.
    2. Go back into the BIOS settings and verify the setting was really saved.  Exit the BIOS settings (discarding this time) and boot Windows normally.
    3. Go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\VIDEO\NVIDIA and run setup.exe.  Use the Custom option for the mode after it does compat checks and asks for you to agree to the EULA.
    4. When you see the list of custom installation options, turn on the "Perform a clean installation" checkbox.  This should not present a problem if you don't have custom profiles.
    See if that works.

  • Blind tty since nvidia upgrade

Since I have update nvidia package from 1.0.9631-1 to 1.0.9746-1, I have black ttys when X is started and then killing X does not make ttys reappear.
ttys still work, but in a "blind" way, so I can type some commands but without seeing what I'm typing.
I use the classic kernel with vga= option, but there is still a problem without and I have a GeForce 6600 Go

You couldn't find solutions in one of the literally *dozen* threads about flash? Two things: It's a) Adobe's problem, and b) if you have blue people it means you didn't activate hardware decoding.
killer1804 wrote:I have available frequencies (at a resolution of 1280x1024) are shown as 50 and 51 - is this normal?
If you would've read the documentation, you'd know what those numbers mean. Yes, it's 100% normal.
It seems all the beef you have with nvidia is not actually nvidia's problem, but your problem in not educating yourself. The only thing you have is the console switching thing, that really is a nvidia bug that appeared recently, which affects a few card families.
But even so, comparing nouveau vs. nvidia... lack of power management, lack of hardware decoding, lack of performance. The first two are quite the problem for laptops. Nouveau does great at the basic stuff and is in active development, so it's not all bad. But the thing is, why get a nvidia card for the basics? Intel is very sufficient for those.

  • Can the ATI and NVIDIA coexist?

    Hi everyone,
I recently installed a new ATI Radeon 5770 into my 1st gen MacPro 2006. I moved the original Nvidia GeForce 7300GT into slot #3.
I installed Snow Leopard 6.0 into a new upgraded HDD to tests out the new OS X. My other HDDs are still running Tiger and Leopard.
The problem now is that when I plug my monitor into the DVI of the ATI card, I get a black monitor. When I plug the Monitor cord into the Nvidia's DVI output, I get my normal screen.
How can I get my new ATI working?
I planned on using my old Nividia card for my 2nd monitor since the ATI is not equipped with dual DVI outputs.
    What am I missing?
    Rio

    Hi Grant,
I did notice the possibility of using adapters for the card to support multiple monitors but I don't want to spend more money byuing them. The ATI card already cost a small fortune. I also somewhat failed to notice that the ATI 5770 only supports 10.6.x and up. I have other HDDs running on Tiger and Leopard for testing and software issues. I think I will most likely return this card and opt to find an Nvidia GeForce 8800GT wich may solve all my "issues". We'll what happens.
    Regardless, thanks for "chiming" in.

  • Sound (optical) gone after upgrade [SOLVED]

    Hi All,
I have had great fun after the last upgrade. First problem  nvidia driver would not load, solved by allocating more ram on the kernel line (in /boot/menu.1st
Second problem is I no longer have a visible optical sound interface (the one on the motherboard, intel chip ) The nvidia hdmi sound channel is there though ..
pavucontrol shows no optical device just nvidia hdmi ..
Anyone know how to debug this?

ok, looks like we need to check the basics first.
from console run alsamixer, select the card with the s/pdif output and verify is is not muted (it should show OO at the bottom for that channel).
Note the name of the S/pdif channel, run aplay --list-pcms to make sure you have the correct pcm name for it.
    then try aplay --device=pcm_name /path/to/any/soundfile
    (/usr/share/sounds has many) .
If that commands outputs sound, you'll know for sure the s/pdif output is working.
This is what aplay --list-pcms returns:
    [bmentink@TV ~]$ aplay --list-pcms

  • Can't update nvidia driver on Satellite P25-S507

    I've followed the instructions:
    1. uninstalled the original nvidia driver
    2. installed the updated driver downloaded from nvidia www page.
    3. There was NO RESULT. The new driver was not installed, so I had to reinstall the old driver
    4. As a result I can't use OpenGL 1.5 and my generated renderings are of poor quality.
So: Why can't I update the nvidia driver?

I've solved the problem after having consulted the US laptop forum. I've downloaded the ForceWare 56.63 and updated the driver. It works great.

  • MSIPVS locks up on exit with tv@nywhere - solved

I have a tv@nywhere card and I am running Windows 2000.  My motherboard is an MSI KT3 Ultra2 with Athlon XP2000+ and 256 MB.  My vidoe card is an MSI G4ti4200 with version 44.03 of nvidias drivers.
I just solved my problem where MSIPVS would lock up when I tried to shut it down.  Once MSIPVS had locked up, I would then have to go to task manager to kill the process.  That was the only way I could close it.
My problem was solved by installing windows 2000 service pack 4
    I hope this helps someone.

    Hey Hendrik,
    I 'm in Belgium 2 (Antwerp Boechout)
First of all, I think this card was designed and drivers written on a sundaymorning
They could have never tested this software. I know 3 people who bought this card and no one has got it working perfectly.
1 cannot install the software (on a clean XP)
2 only mono and channels missing (like you)
3 that's me --> installing kx drivers on a sblive and no go anymore, msipvr refuses to start up
Sound is bad, absolutly no highs (measured with audio spectrum analyser and a professional tv-modulator)
Only msipvr seems to work for the tuner --> can you tell me how you imported the channel list to windvr3 because when it scans in version 3 stations are in unlocked position --> when pressed record --> back to blue image which means no tuner signal.
Out of the box --> remote doesn't work (who tests this stuff?)  --> http://users.pandora.be/flplayer/patch.htm
This fixed this error for me
Msipvr seems to be missing frames even when watching tv (not recording) on a p4 2.4GHz --> software related
    and on and on.......
