Nvidia & nvidia-utils upgrade breaks X
Yesterday I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils (nvidia-185.18.31-1 & nvidia-utils-185.18.31-1) and it caused X to fail on next boot. (I've downgraded for now).
In the /var/log/Xorg.0.log it gave an error that told me to go look in the kernel log (If you want the exact message, I'd have to upgrade again and try to boot. Because of the logrotate, I guess.)
this is what I found in /var/log/kernel.log
Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 185.18.31, but
Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: this kernel module has the version 185.18.14. Please
Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: components have the same version.
Anyone have any ideas?
I ran into this breakage today and simply rebuilding nvidia-utils and nvidia from ABS didn't do the trick. The symptom on my Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop (2005 vintage, Pentium M, Nvidia Geforce Go 6200/6600 video) is that X hangs completely with a blank screen. Nothing works and I have to force an ACPI shutdown by holding down the power button.
I tried various versions of Nvidia and downgrading xorg-server all to no avail until, as a desperation shot, I tried the beta Nvidia drivers 190.18. That seems to have done the trick. Just posting about it here in case there's anyone else in the same boat (i.e. rebuilding the release drivers doesn't work).

Nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1 segfault
After today's upgrade, X fails to start with segmentation fault. When I downgraded nvidia/nvidia-utils to 185.18.36-2, xorg-server to 1.6.3.901-1 and related xf86-input-*, it starts to work. Interestingly, neither combination of nvidia/nvidia-utils to 185.18.36-2 with xorg-server 1.7.1-1, nor nvidia/nvidia-utils 190.42-1 with xorg-server to 1.6.3.901-1 works. After downgrading and playing it a little bit, I lost my original crash logs.
I guess I should post the problem here to see if anyone is seeing the same problem, before going back upgrading and hitting the bug again. Of course, if you are interested in my Xorg.0.log, I can produce it again.
And by the way, I'm using arch64 on a lenovo t61p with nVidia Quadro FX 570M. I guess the problem is new, and I don't have any luck with google, yet.I just encountered this error with nvidia-173xx, I guess the only solution is to manually search for and install the
older xorg packages? And wait for nvidia to possibly* add support for the new xorg?

Last edited by Dr.X (2010-11-10 18:41:30)Solved the problem is very simple - removing the nouveau. I have it was because I was in one blog/forum read that no problem with containing both nvidia and nouveau, but that one of them will be in Blacklist. But he interrupted me to upgrade. But the strangest thing - when I last updated, they do not conflict, but now whoop.

K7N2G-L Voltages (NVIDIA System Utility)
I looked at NVIDIA system utility and noticed that I have the following voltages;
CPU 1.65
AGP 1.50
MEM 2.50
NF 0.00
AUX 3.23
What is the AUX and why is is so high it is showing red?Yup, 1.8 is installed, and working, as far as i know! (on boot up and on sisoft sandra, the version is 1.8)
Anyhows, I was just wondering, do all the other K7N2G-ILSR users experience this (with the onboard geforce 4 enabled) I know, I know, im gonna be upgrading to a FX or 9800, but for now im not a FPS junkie! And also the onboard graphics are fine!
BTW, what is the stock voltages, FSB, etc for the AMD Athlon XP 2200?? My cpu seems to be running at 1.79, after installing nvidia system utility!
Thnx for your help guys, and richard, mistakes happen, im rather glad you made a mistake, as that only shows your human! lol
Take care guys! (and gals!) -
I have been reading in the forums the trouble the Nvidia Sys Utility can cause with both the Bios and the USB ports on the K8N. I had already installed it but only use it to check temps/speeds and once to set the AGP bus. Anyway I thought I'd be better off without it and tried to uninstall it. When I went into Control Panel and tried Uninstall I got the following error message "This software requires an NVIDIA nforce2 or nforce3 motherboard to operate. No required products were detected. Installation will now be aborted." I got this error message even though when I run the utility it clearly identify's my mobo. Any ideas on how to get rid of it properely.
just delete the install folder and then use a registry cleaner such as that in tweakxp pro or vcome systemsuite.

Just one ? frist I just downloaded the bios update for this board version 3.9 which adds support for the nvidia system utility under power and speeds there is a gage called Aux which is in the red at 3.39 everything eles shows norm.
[I have recently updated my Bios to V.5.6 in the hopes of using the NSU. However,
the advanced function section of the utility is "grayed" out (unavailable).
Anyone know a work around for this problem. I did a DOS flash on my Bios and
it registers version 5.6 at bootup.

Latest pm-utils upgrade brakes suspend
Since latest pm-utils upgrade (1.1.2) I'm not able to suspend directly through pm-suspend.
I found 2 issues which explain it:
1. My notebook (Gateway MX3231) isn't listed in hal-info configs, so naturally upgrading it replaced my edited .fdi file. I don't really know why, but putting it back doesn't solve the problem; I even tried downgrading pm-utils, hal and hal-info and then editing a .fdi to support my laptop without luck. I guess I'm doing something wrong here, because it used to work smoothly. Anyway, executing the needed quirks by hand (vbe-post and vbemode-restore) does the job.
2. 'Something' is deleting the directory /var/run/pm-utils/storage, needed to the process. Downgrading the 3 pkgs posted above does solve the problem, so I'm sure this is a bug in any of 3 -I guess pm-utils-
I would really appreciate some help with this. I'm now suspending through acpi daemon, but of course want the kpowersave functionality back.rumil wrote:

Uff i really need hibernate...
My guess is that that's the thing: on my previous laptop (Fujitsu s2110) suspend and hibernation worked flawlessly on 32-bit system, but it was a no go on 64-bit
If so x86_64 Kernel is fat to be an ideal kernel for a daily use...
That's not the first thing that gave me problems....

1.1.3 iPhone upgrade breaks bluetooth
Since 1.1.3 upgrage iPhone will not pair wuth Car Kit ... which works fine with other phones. Looking at forums this is a widely reported problem.... and is a DANGER to LIFE for iPhone users when driving. How can I raise the issue to Apple so that they fix as matter of urgency?
I have the Garmin 360. Not only did the upgrade break my bluetooth connect ability, the other night my Iphone lite up and locked all by itself. A small cog appeared on the screen and the phone died. The phone came back only after the battery was depleted and recharged. Since then batter life has been reduced. Between paying a premium for the phone and now this......

[SOLVED] xorg / nvidia problems after upgrade
Hello,
I have recently done an upgrade with pacman -Syu and am having problems.
When X starts, it hangs at a blank screen. Keyboard is frozen and I am unable to hit another tty. I can ssh in, but I cannot even seem to kill X, or reboot. I am forced to do a hard reboot.
I have tracked the problem down to running multiple X sessions. I currently have 4 monitors, and have them configured such that I have 2 X sessions, (2 monitiors with twinview on each session). I can get things working on 2 monitors using twinview, but I cannot get X to start properly if I enable the second X session. (I have tried everything and cannot get anything to come up unto a third monitor... I can only get X working on 2..)
This seems like it could be a bug. Although I am not sure if the problem is with X or with the nvidia drivers, as both were updated, however I am thinking it is an issue with X.
I have checked and rechecked my xorg log files, and there are no errors, however, once I did see this error, but it did not happen consistently..
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop
Any suggestions? I would like even be happy with downgrading some packages to get this working again.

Update 2:
Since downgrading xorg-server didn't help, I decided to try installing the latest and greated nvidia drivers. I grabbed them from their website, and uninstalled the nvida package from arch. (Version 190.53.1). The drivers I am currently running are 195.36.15 and all is well.
Instead of installing non-managed packages, why not use nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils-beta from the AUR? -
[SOLVED] Nvidia 346.35-3 breaks X
Starting with nvidia 346.35-2, X would not start. Like others, I would hang at [OK] Reached target graphical interface. Today's upgrade to 346.35-3 did not fix the issue either
Installed currently:
nvidia 346.35-3
nvidia-utils 346.35-2
Things I've tried:
* generating a minmal 20-nvidia.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
-still hangs at [OK] Reached target graphical interface
* running nvidia-xconfig
-same as above
* disabling gdm and using startx with .xinitrc
- X fails to launch and results in: "gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libEGL.so.1: cannot open shared obect file: No such file or direcctory. xinit: connection to X server lost"

Dont install the Nvidia System Utility!!
Today i had the great idea to install nvidia's system utility to tweak my ram settings in windows.
After that i had a system freeze, no prob normally, but after the restart of my pc, my usb mouse dont work.....i think what ??? ok reboot straight in bios....everything seems like before....i go in the health control and my eyes are burning.....it shows a cpu temp of -123°c,..... ???? Ok i tryed to reset my bios.....restart.....core center shows temps from 3 till -123......my usb mouse still dont work.......i go crazy.....this shi....nvidia tool has modified my bios !!!!!
i only solved the problem with a biosflash "back" to V 1.1, i never used any other biosversion.....so be warned if you install this "tool" or how i call it a "problem"strange or not ? have any other the same probs with the nvidia utility ?
maybe thats the problem of your wrong temps ? -
Nvidia-325.15-1 breaks backlight dimming
Hi everybody,
after installing the new nvidia-driver, my backlight dimming doesn't work anymore. I had to roll back to 319.32 to make it work again.
Anybody else experiencing this?
My Laptop:
Model: Vostro 3300
GPU: Geforce 310M
Kernel: 3.10.5-1-ARCHYes, I have noticed the same after upgrading to 325.15.
Backlight dimming from within E17 does not work anymore.
Another phenomena is that "tooltips" (in e.g. for networkmanager and nvidia tools) shows up as black on black.
Same deal with xfce4-terminal as a whole.
Tested rolling back to 319.32 and all works fine again. But this is obviously not a good solution so I'm up on 325.15-2 again.
Toshiba Satellite L750
Geforce 525M
Kernel 3.10.6-2
WM Enlightenment
(The special keys for backlight has never worked but that's a different problem not related). -
HP Pavillion p6-2204a with HP Nvidia GT 630 Upgrade GPU to Asus GTX 750 ti OC Strix
I just checked the specs of the single fan.
They both have the same requirement of recommended PSU Watts and power consumption.
I already sent an email the ebay seller and asked about the Switch(Hybrid and legacy) , Power connector and if the card will run on a 300watt PSU for the power consumtion is very low.
BIOS UPDATE:
Tried to look for a bios update but i cant seem to find one
Bios version and date: AMI 7.07, 4/20/2012

[solved] NVIDIA 346.35-3 breaks TTY console displays.
I have a GeForce 970, I am using GRUB with GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep, and my kernel is booting into 1920x1200 mode. Since upgrading to NVIDIA 346.35-3 my TTY consoles all become garbled and unreadable once X has started, but they are unaffected before X starts.
Downgrading to NVIDIA 343.36-6 solves this issue. There isn't any output in the journal. When I switch to a TTY, my monitor reports that it's in 640x480 mode.

Anyone else having these problems?
Last edited by gilmoreja (2015-02-27 12:27:00)Hi,
I also confirm the behavior with 2x GTX 970 SLI + Base Mosaic Mode and Nvidia 346.35-6.
Hope this get fixed soon. Or we find a workaround for that issue. -
[REQ][Arch64] lib32-nvidia-96xx-utils
Hello.
I've got a Geforce 4 ti4200, and I'm trying to play etpro.
The textures are ugly and the FPS much worse than my old 32bit Arch installation.
The problem should be that I've installed the 97xx series utils, and not the 86xx 32bit series.Hello.
