Nvidia Optimus on a Lenovo Y580

Greetings folk!
I'm trying to get optimus workings on my Lenovo Y580 laptop. I had it working a few months ago, but I ended up having to format and reinstall reciently and now I can't seem to get it working with the latest version, I think I may be due to the new kernel.  I remember a few things about the last install, i'm pretty sure bbswitch was recent enough to not need the  y580 acpi hack.  I'll go ahead and start posting some information.
Kernel:
Linux shard 3.10.10-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Aug 30 11:30:06 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I followed all instructions as per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee which worked last time.

I'm pretty sure all the packages are install correctly and not conflictings.. My user  matt is in the bumblebee group, bumblebeed is set to load correctly with systemd.
Pretty lost but maybe someone may have some ideas, I heard that there is some conflict with the latest nvidia drivers and 3.10.

Quick Update:
So I've just came across this wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
and after going through it I noticed this message appear when manually trying to change the bbswitch power state and reloading the nvidia module.

Maybe it's happening because it's stuck in D3. Pretty sure the latest driver would support the 660m.  I guess I may have to look into installing a older kernel.
I found a similar problem here:

so far google's not turning up too much.

  • NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver for Windows 7 (64 Bit) interfering with Microsoft Outlook 2013

    Lenovo Community
Can't explain it nor do I understand it but it appears that the latest NVIDIA Optimus Display Drivers (Version 9.18.13.1270 / 8.15.10.2725, dated 05 Jan 2014) is interfering with Microsoft Outlook 2013. For a week I have been working with Microsoft Technical and Lenovo's Premium Support to no avail. I have reformatted my hard drive 4 times and uninstall and reinstalled Office 2013 Pro more time than I can to remember. The issue stared last Tuesday (18 Mar 2014) when I uploaded new drivers from Lenovo and Microsoft. Outlook would not execute (the initial Outlook dialog would just say processing ....) For four day's Microsoft, Lenovo, and I trouble shot everything under the sun. What was odd was whenever Microsoft or Lenovo technicians took control of my computer Outlook worked fine, and when I stated this to the technicians they thought I was nuts, but once I had control the problem returned. Finally frustrated to the hill I once again reformatted my hard drive but this time installed the Lenovo updates and software one at a time creating numerous restore points along the way. When I updated the new NVIDIA drivers the problem resurfaced.  When I would go into the device manager and uninstall the NVIDIA driver’s outlook once again worked fine.  I finally was able to reinstall (through my restore points) the previous version of drivers and Outlook is working fine.  Is there something to this. ??????

I always avoid Optimus, it's historically been way too buggy and very little performance bump over HD4000/4600.  I either opt for Quadro machines or just run Intel integrated.  That being said, it's a blessing in disguise for you since Outlook is hideos.  Consider something else, so many better options exist.

  • BSOD when watching YouTube on Lenovo Y580

    Hi,
I'm new to the Lenovo forum, but I've had my Lenovo Y580 for a long time and it hasn't given me many problems until recently. Around 4 days ago, I was watching YouTube on Google Chrome when I realized that around 60% of the time before a video starts, I would get something along the lines of "The Adobe Flash Player is required for video playback" for a 1/4 of a second, before the video would start. After watching 5-6 YouTube videos the computer froze, went to a black screen for 5 seconds, before it said "Display Driver stopped working and has recovered", and it said something about Intel drivers.
I brushed this off, but the next day while watching YouTube again, the computer froze, but this time the mouse disappeared shortly after and I was greeted with my first BSOD since I bought this computer in December 2012. It said something along the lines of "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA", and this happened another 3 times, all after watching a couple of YouTube videos. So I finally got fed up and looked that error up, and it said memory was bad. So I tried Windows Memory Diagnostic a couple of times and it says that memory is okay. I then installed new NVIDIA and Intel Graphics drivers, and I am still getting the same crashes. I am unsure what to do right now because this only happens when I watch YouTube, for instance if I watch some YouTube the computer will crash after 30 minutes, whereas I can play BF4 for hours straight without it skipping a beat. Obviously I have been using YouTube for a long time so for this just to start happening now puzzles me. I also forgot to mention that this happens usually right after I exit the video.
    Thanks for your support.

    Good day.
You mention Chrome. Do you have the same difficulties with YouTube in other browsers (FF or IE)?
    Regards.

  • Play WoW and get Nvidia Optimus switch to Nvidia processor

    Laptop: Lenovo T420
Graphic card: Nvidia NVS 4200M + Intel integrated HD graphics card
    OS: Win7 64-bit
I found my laptop is always running on Intel integrated HD graphics card while playing WoW (process: Wow-64.exe). My average frame rate is 20-30. Below are things I tried:
    - In BIOS: choose to use Nvidia Optimus, and let it choose which graphic card to use.
    - Update to latest driver: Nvidia = 8.17.12.9620,
    - Right click on Wow-64.exe, select to run with Nvidia processor
    - Launch with command "Wow-64.exe -d3d11" from Windows Command Prompt
But I am still not seeing Nvidia processor running in the Nvidia Control Panel > Display GPU activity icon in the notification area. Is there anyone know how to get this work?

    Hello Khumash,
Have you updated the BIOS in your T420? If you haven't done so, can you try updating via the ISO method?
Also installation readme file for the GPU driver as follows.
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/83de45ww.txt
Can you try the steps provided and see if it helps? I have a T420 with Optimus however I don't play WoW thus I am unable to test it at my level.
If by updating BIOS and Updating the driver did not help, can you try booting into BIOS at set GPU to Discrete only? and see if the FPS for WoW improved?
    Thanks

I have a Y2P (i5) ... Feel free to ping me if you want me to test some applications with your Y2P if you have the same model. I don't mind keep doing recovery on it if needed .... =)

  • Nvidia optimus in W10

Hi, I'd like to ask if optimus is working in windows 10. There're only drivers for w8.1 atm, will they work? I have Lenovo E540 with nvidia 740m gt.

Quote from: SysmiX on 30-December-12, 06:14:24
    Hi,
I could not disable the nvidia optimus in BIOS. I need to disable it since the linux support is broken and it causes constant freezes. Does the new BIOS for the GE60 have an option to disable the optimus?
In case I need to update the BIOS, should I use the Win7 or the Win8 version? My laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7 but I have upgraded it to windows 8 and installed linux (dual boot).
    Thanks in advance, regards,
    Diogo
From what I have seen, you ALWAYS use the Windows 7 bios, because the Windows 8 bios is for machines that came pre-installed with Windows 8. If you attempted the flash the Windows 8 bios (or so I'm told by other moderators), it could 'brick' your machine. I just wouldn't chance it.
I'm not sure if there is a way to disable the NVidia optimus in the bios to be perfectly honest. Svet or one of the other mods can probably comment on that.....

  • T430, disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS, no graphic card can be found in Windows

I try to use my T430 minidisplayport to connect with external display. But it is so unstable that the connection between laptop and display can lost anytime. That is so annoying. I use Nvidia control panel in Windows to force use NVS5400M instead of HD4000, but it seems doesn't change anything.
I heard if I select the discrete graphic card in BIOS, then it may fix the display connection lost problem. Then I go to the BIOS and  set the "discrete", and disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS Config Display (This is necessary otherwise the laptop will change it back to Optimus automatically.). But after I log into Windows, then no graphic card can be found, Why? How should I fix this problem?
The external display issue in T430 is so annoying. The VGA suffers very serious noise while the minidisplay is so unstable. Even worse, there is no any lenovo staff stand out to help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If anyone has experience, please share that.
    Thank so much.

Hello Mark, thanks for help. Please see my answers below:
    1. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits.
    2. Yes, I did. The BIOS is latest (2.65). The NVS5400M driver is 333.02.
    3. My display is Asus MX239, which only has HDMI. I use an adapter cable: miniDP->HDMI and then an HDMI-HDMI cable I try to connect to a Samsung TV, but similar. I don't have a miniDP to HDMI cable. I just order one but has not get it.
Sorry that I post in multiple threads. As I mentioned in that thread, let me conclude all these here.
After I disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS, then I istalled the NVS5400M 333.11 driver. Then the NVS5400 can be found in Windows. But the displayport problem still exist. It is still very very difficult to detect external monitor (this means in most cases I can't switch to external display), and even sometimes it works, the connection can lost anytime.
Even worse, I found a new problem, that if I disconnect my T430 with power supply, then I can see the "pink bar" appear and disappear in the laptop screen (not external monitor) repetitively, quickly. I have never seen this problem before, only after I install NVS 333.11. Then I reinstall the 333.02 driver. Then I enabled the "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS again. The "pink bar" issue gone. It looks like the issue is caused by 333.11 driver. But this driver comes from Nvidia offical driver download website.
So now the most important thing I need help is, I need to have a stable solution to connect external display. In T430, there are only two ports for external display:
    1. VGA
    2. MiniDisplayPort
    Please help me following questions:
    1. When I try to use VGA, I can see very very bad noise in external display. This issue also be posted in previous thread in forum. This should be a hardware design failure. Is there any solution to fix this that I can use VGA without noise in external display?
    2. My T430 has both HD4000 and NVS5400M, if I need to use miniDP (which is I prefer, I have digital port why I use VGA.) for display. Does miniDP only work when the NVS5400 is used (it looks like that)?
    3. If miniDP only works NVS5400, so how should I configure to ensure the T430 use NVS5400 all the time? Do I have to disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS or I can switch using Nvidia Control panel in windows ?
    4. Would you please provide me a configuration for T430 (include BIOS, and setting in Nvidia Control panel) that can support stable external display thru miniDP? Include driver versions and BIOS version.
    5. What are potential reasons that the external display can't be detected and can lost connection anytime with T430? To be noted, I already set to use NVS5400 in Nvidia Control panel. The case is also same I disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS. I think cable may be a issue.
    Thanks again.

  • Nvidia Optimus Support under XP - NVS3100mm vs Intel integrated

    Hi,
We are currently in the process of evaluating the T510 as our new standard laptop.
We are considdering purchasing teh 4314-9WG model, that has on board both the Nvidia Quadro NVS3100mm, as well as the integrated Intel graphics of the QM57 chipset.
Now normally, the Nvidia Optimus system would enable the user to switch between these 2 graphics "cards"  on the fly (as I understand it).
However, our current install image is still based on Windows XP SP3, as there is no driver support for Nvidia Optimus for XP.
Thus, we have the following question:
Will our users be able to use the Intel integrated Graphics by default on XP, even though the Optimus witching will not work.
    or in other words:
Is the Optimus driver a pre-requisite for using one or the other video card as default under Windows XP
What will the Laptop due without this driver?
We would accept that for now, users would be bound to only use either the Intel integrated graphics, or the Nvidia Quadro.

I am able to get the NVS3100 working ok under XP, except that is defaults to 16bit color for some reason, which I then have to change manually.
Now, for the Integrated Intel HD Graphics, I do the following:
In the BIOS, under Display, the "graphics device" is set to Integrated Graphics, and the "OS detection for NVIDIA Optimus" is set to disabled.
I am using the latest drivers for Intel HD, 6.14.10.5313
When Windows XP boots, it detects 2 devices:
    - Audiodevice on bus for High Definition Audio
    - Videocontroller (VGA Compatible)
If I now try to install the intel driver pack ( 6.14.10.5313 )  it will start with the installation for the Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver. This seems to install without problem.
But when I click finish at teh end of it, nothing else happens.
What I expect is that it would now start the install for the Intel HD Graphics setup. And it simply doesnt.
If I first unpack the executable, i get a folder called DISPLAY6
Inside, I can start an executable called Setup (Intel HD Graphics Installer) But all this seems to do is start the Turbo Boost Technology driver setup again. And afterwards, again, nothing happens.
I have tried it both from a situation where the NVIDIA drivers where previously not installed, and where they where installed and I switched it later. Both give the same results.
Its almost like it doesnt properly detect teh hardware, or cant see that the Intel driver goes with it.
I have also tried to manually install teh driver, by pointing to unknown VGA device to teh unpacked driver location, but it doesnt find any drivers there that it can use.

  • NVIDIA Optimus on MSI GE70 2OE: No screens, then server fails to start

    Hello,
I have recently acquired an MSI GE70 2OE-071 laptop with the following configuration, intending to run Arch Linux (dual boot with Windows 7) on it:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4700 MQ
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M (2 GB DDR5 memory)
    LCD: 17.3" FHD 1920x1080
    Memory: 12 GB DDR3
    HDD: 1 TB 7200 RPM
I originally installed Arch Linux the same way as described in the beginner's guide. I could get the basic twm setup to work, but the moment I installed the proprietary drivers (using pacman -S nvidia, followed by nvidia-xconfig, followed by a reboot), X Windows crashed, i.e. I started getting the No screens found error. So after some days of digging, I found the NVIDIA Optimus wiki page. Following the advice here, I could get rid of this error, but I still cannot get into the GUI, because the server terminates. There is no hardware problem that I can think of because Manjaro Linux works fine, and being a perpetual Arch novice eager to learn, I just wanted to get this thing to work from the ground up.
So I'd really appreciate some help.
Here are the relevant files and command outputs.

If I understand this correctly, then you have an Optimus graphics card (couldn't find anything online, but your lspci looks like it). I too have such a setup on my laptop. The thing to keep in mind here, is that your main graphics card is the Intel integrated card. So instead of installing your system like with an nvidia card, you install it like an intel card. Specifically, you would want to follow the instructions on Bumblebee. Once you followed them, the whole graphics part runs on the Intel card. Once you want to play a game or do some other heavy graphics card work you call your application like this:
    optirun wine /path/to/game.exe
Notice how optirun tells the system to use the nvidia card. It will take a second or two to start it (specifically, enable the card, start another X screen and launch the application on it transparently). Follow the instructions in the Wiki if you have any problems.
If you don't have an Optimus card (just NVIDIA, no Intel), then don't follow any Optimus instructions, just usual NVIDIA stuff from the Wiki.

  • NVIDIA Optimus: Can't init X11

I'm trying to install official drivers on Arch and run X11, but no luck so far...
Graphic card is Nvidia740M (with intel on-chip gpu)
    followed the instructions here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
But when starting X11 , I get the error: Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. error, with the actual problem being related to Failed to assign any connected display devices to X screen 0.
Been playing with this a day, and really getting frustrated, I also don't care about the intel driver, power-saving and switchable graphics like bumblebee
I can only get it to work by installing open-source intel drivers (xf86-video-intel), nouveau also brings up the same error.

I also added nouveau to blacklist, and nvidia to mkinitcpio.conf
Also tried added resolutions to xorg.conf, but still get the same error
some stuff I'm curious about :
    - I installed xrandr after nvidia drivers, as the guide said, but xrandr doesn't work in terminal, brings up "no screens" error, is this normal ?
    - I also noticed that when I initialize X11 with intel (xf86-video-intel) drivers, xrandr shows VGA1, HDMI1, HDMI2, VIRTUAL as valid displays, but in the Xorg.log (nvidia) I don't any any of these enumerated.
    any hints or help ?
    thanks

Why? it's the best way to get it to work.
Tried bumblebee too, still get the same error, wanted to get things more simple and also try official nvidia (optimus)
Check the xorg example on this page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus (this if you only want to use nvidia and disable intel).
Don't forget to get the busID and add it to the xorg. Then try again.
Yes, I have tried the xorg.conf written there. If you also see the current xorg.conf, it has BusID too. I don't get device not found error (which is the case for missing BusID)

  • Is there a option to turn off NVIDIA optimus on T440p?

I just want to turn off NVIDIA optimus and use the Discrete Graphics card only on my T440p.
I can not find any options in BIOS……

    Here is my BIOS version:

  • CS6/Bridge doesn't use GPU on Nvidia Optimus machines

    Photoshop CS6/Bridge
    Win8.1 64bit/Nvidia GTX 870M
Is there a way to force Adobe Bridge to using the Nvidia GPU rather than “software rendering”?
The problem: Starting Bridge on notebooks with the Nvidia Optimus (I tested several) in “preferences -advanced”, the option, “use software rendering”, is not tagged which is correct.
But as soon as I open an image and recheck with the preferences, “use software rendering” is tagged and greyed out, hence zooming and all other manipulations suffer from a lack of speed and smoothness, slide-show for ex. is not usable at all.
I’m familiar with the Nvidia control panel and of course the Nvidia GPU is assigned to Bridge.exe there.
Strange enough, in the registry, the Bridge – preferences value for “use software rendering” always stays on “0”, which is correct.
BTW. Photoshop is running fine on the Nvidia GPU.
It is a shame that Bridge performs a lot better on a 6 years old laptop than on a brand new high end gaming machine only because there is Optimus on board.
Does anybody have an idea for a workaround?

Is there any insight here? I can't seem to get my brand new work y70 to use the NVidia graphics card for any external displays! What the heck is going on!? And, moreso, why can't even the crummy Intel onboard graphics push 2560 x 1600 via either HDMI or USB (through a replicator)? I've had a 30" monitor running 2560 x 1600 for 5 years. This is a brand new laptop and can't push out high res?! It's crazy to me!! EDIT: I presently have the Intel display adapter disabled in the device manager. I have video on the laptop display but I can no longer get ANY external displays to work. Which means, to me, it would seem that the NVidia GPU is 100% relegated to the laptop display, ONLY.
