NXT Custom Block Development with LabVIEW 8.2.1?

I'm trying to develop a custom NXT block using
LabVIEW 8.2.1.  Is this possible?  I am having trouble importing the finished block into
the Mindstorm environment.  My block is always greyed out in the import
list.  My block seems to compile just fine.  In fact, if I create a new
example block from a template and try to import that without
modifications, I get the same behavoir.
Any ideas on how I can debug this?
P.S. Hopefully this actually goes to the LabVIEW Friends of LEGO group ; )

Eagles Coach is right on the money here.  Because the MINDSTORMS environment is built on LabVIEW 7.1, that's the only version you can use to create custom blocks for the environment.  LabVIEW 8.0 and 8.2 are useful if you plan to do all your programming in LabVIEW itself, but won't help you create blocks for MINDSTORMS.
You could use the "Save for Previous" feature of LabVIEW to backport your code to 7.1, but that would require you to have both LV 8.0 and LV 7.1.

  • Sending custom windows messages (SDK) with LabVIEW

To communicate with other applications, especially LabWindows/CVI I want to send and receive windows messages. In LabWindows/CVI that can be done quite simple. But for LabVIEW I only found ways to receive messages (standard messages like WM_MOUESEMOVE etc.). Every standard message has a number, so I would like to send a message with my own number.
For the communication between CVI and LabVIEW, NI recommnends to use ActiveX or Datasocket. Windows Messages would be much faster. Can someone help me out?

Just yesterday Ed Dickens showed me an example that listed many of the C datatypes and their LabVIEW version. I am not sure what version of LabVIEW first had this, but it is in 7.1.
In the example finder (Help -> Find Examples), search for DLLs. The one that you want to look at is Call DLL.vi.
    Hope that this helps,

  • Add a substep (Edit Mode) with LabVIEW

    Hello,
My supplier has delivered a library of steps in TestStand (with a TypePalette and associated Ini Files).
I'd like to custom the INI file with LabVIEW to add a module as "Edit Substeps" on the differents Steps Types.
With "GetTypePaletteFileList" and "PropertyObjectFile", I can see the differents Type Palettes and the associated paths but I can modify it (add a substep module ... etc) ?
Is it possible ? Someone has an idea ?
    Thank you for your help

  • Integrating custom PCIe hardware with LabView

Hi, I am new to LabView so appologize if question is in the wrong place.
I have a custom PCIe acquisition card that I want to use in LabView environment to postprocess some data. So far the board has been used successfully with its windows drivers and VS.NET software. What is the process for setting up a device like that in LabView? Can LabView use the COM object windows driver just like a Visual Studio project would? If yes, is there a document that explains how this is done?
I have worked with NI's own instruments where the driver is provided and seamlessly integrates into the LabView, but I am a bit lost with this custom non NI board.
    Thank you.

Thanks. I tried searching that site for examples... but this is a board that our company has developed (software defined radio) and I am certain no one has written any drivers for it yet. Thats the problem statement that I am trying to research. What would it take to make the board we designed compatible with LabView. Since this is a Software defined radio platform, LabView offers some useful functions that can be used to postprocess and analyze data captured by our card.
Ideal goal is to have LabView module capture data from PCIe buffer allowing for further processing (filtering, FFT, demodulation, etc...). I would appreciate if you can direct me to some examples or literature on this topic.
    Thanks,
    Anton

  • Would a LabVIEW 8.5 Executable play nice with LabVIEW 7.1 Development on the Same System?

Our testing computer right now just has the user run the corresponding .vi file since we have LabVIEW 7.1 installed on the computer.
If I use 8.5 to compile this .vi to an executable, I realize that I must install the run-time support for 8.5.  My question is what effect will installing the 8.5 run-time have on the ability to continue to run the other 7.1 VIs with LabVIEW 7.1.
Should I be concerned with losing MAX settings when installing the run-time support for 8.5? I want to be able to run 8.5 executables but also able to open up a 7.1 .vi file in LabVIEW 7.1 and run it that way also.
Thanks for your help! I have 8.5 on my system and the idea is to slowly replace the running of the .vi files with .exe files, I was just curious in case my .exe doesn't work I can still run the tests with .vi in the mean time.
    Thanks for your help folks!

Just note one thing - installing the 8.5 RTE should have no effect on 7.1, but if your executable requires drivers (e.g. DAQmx) and you install a version which no longer supports 7.1, you will lose the ability to work with that driver in 7.1. I don't think NI has any drivers yet which are not supported in 7.1, but I believe there are some which are no longer supported in 7.0.

  • Error, in Getting started with Labview. Chapter 3, part 4.

    Hi.
Still struggling on, trying to find the time to work through the "Getting Started with LabVIEW" document.
Only 19 days left to go, and I'm still only in chapter 3!...
Right.  In the "Saving Data When Prompted by a User" exersise, part 4...
    4.   Right-click the Signals input of the Write To Measurement File
Express VI and select Insert Input/Output from the shortcut menu to
          insert the Comment input.
Problem is, that option is greyed out, so not available!...
I did what the instructions said, I right clicked on the "Signals" input, and it doesnt do what it says on the tin!
Any pointers?   Please don't mention search the help, I've crashed the entire LV environment 3 times now, trying to search for something in there.  It's OK if it finds someting, but it seems to bomb at times, when there is some ambiguity when searching.
Also, I won't be able to do anyting with any replies for a day or two, as I have to go up country to a customer, and mess about with hot oil, high volts, and lots of RF.  It never ends.   (I've still got the day job to do, while trying to fight my way through this "evaluation".   30 days of "Use" would be better, than 30 calendar days for some of us.)

OK... Who let the smoke out?

    Hi Dennis, and everyone else..
That is not how it looks when first dropped on the BD.  On my machine, it is partialy expanded by default, after you clear the Configure dialog that pops up ocupying most of the screen.
Again, if it makes a difference to the way the Right Click shortcut menu works, it should be documented in the Getting Started document, especialy as it seems to be a critical point.
    OK, explain this...
I've just rubbed out the save to file VI, cleaned up the broken wires etc, and then planted a new one on the BD.   Once I cleared the Configure dialog that covers up most of the screen before you see it the first time, the VI was partialy expanded.  I forget the exact list, but "Signals" was not at the top.
I did *EXACTLY* the same again, deleted it, cleaned up, and then planted a fresh new one.   That DID appear that time with nothing but the "Signals" item showing, and two down caretts below that, indicating more items.
    So......
Why the different behaviour each time, on the same BD, in the same session.   Some underlying working data not being correctly initialised when invoked?  Of course, that never happens, right? ('C' programmes eh?)
Trying some more, it seems the behaviour loosley depends on just how close to the edge of the While loop grey border you place it.   Odd.   I have a 1280x800 screen to play with, and a 1280x1024 second screen I use for the Getting Started document.  That is the absolute maximum I can have, due to hardware limits.
I also find, that if you fully expand the "Write to Measurement File" VI block, then fully collapse it, then expand it again, all the items in that list have changed places!  Why?
I had noticed earlier that there is no uniformity in the layout of even the items common to many if not all VI blocks (error in, and error out to name but two) Sometimes one is above the other, sometimes the other way round, sometimes they are not even ajacent to each other.   Has that been done as a source of minor ammusement or something?
Talking to another colegue here, who just wandered in to see how I was getting on with this.  Seems he also has tried the introductory entry into LV (V8.something) in the past.  But he too, found too many things that behaved differently from one time to another, so abandoned it as a lost cause, then decided to learn how to use Visual Basic with NI-GPIB IO instead.   Not without issues either he said, but at least it all behaves exactly the same, each and every time.
    End of the day now...
    Regards.
    Dave B.

  • How do you use Synergy 7.1 with LabVIEW?

My company has reciently installed and configured IBM Rational Synergy 7.1 to be used as our Source Code Control tool.  I have installed the appropriate Microsoft Source Code Control Interface so that Synergy will show up in LabVIEW and it does show up in the "Source Control" options window.
However when I select Synergy as my source control tool it does the following:
    1.  Brings up the login window - I am able to login with no problem
    2.  Brings up a dialog allowing me to select the project to work on, and after I select the project I get two errors...
one from Synergy: "The workspace/project you want to add to IBM Rational Synergy is not under the work area path 'C:\xxx"
(where xxx is my work area for the Synergy project I selected)
then one from LabVIEW:  "Error -2941 occured at prefPage_Source Control.vi     An error occured trying to get the source control project path.    Possible reasons:  LabVIEW:  The source control provider does not support the specified operation."
I first tried this on an earlier version of Synergy that matched what is being used in:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/16D37CCC8659123F8625720500087DB4
But I was getting pretty much the same errors back then too.  It seems like it should work in LabVIEW, I just have no idea what I am doing wrong!
Anyone out there successfully using LabVIEW with Synergy????
    Thanks,
    Trevor.

In theory if a source control provider supports the Microsoft SCC interface, it *should* work with LabVIEW. In practice, each provider has custom implementation that sometimes causes problems when trying to configure the provider from LabVIEW. One sticking point for many providers is the expectation or assumption that an IDE will use some concept of a "project" and therefore pass data associated with that project to the provider. LabVIEW does not enforce that concept but does pass valid information.
Synergy was tested back when it was a Telelogic product. It was difficult to configure and required exact steps to get it to work correctly. The linked knowledge base were steps taken that worked for a few customer setups. It's possible that on other Synergy setups the exact steps may not work. Also, you might check to make sure you try to configure existing Synergy projects  and not try to create new ones from LabVIEW.
The error you mentioned seems to imply that some data is not supported by Synergy. I am not sure if Synergy would be able to track down the issue, but I would recommend contacting them to see if they can pinpoint what data LabVIEW is sending is not valid.

  • Problems obtaining .rxe with labview 8.5 professional

Hello everyone! I am starting with labview for nxt, and I have some problems during the compilation.  I have installed all what it is said in instructions for labview 8.5 professional, then I have  done the "mass compiled" but I have obtanied lots of bad VI. I have tried to do it again and again, and results are always the same.
Not knowing how to solve them, I decide to continue. I can do everything till the moment I want to compile. It tries to compile, but only generates a new .rxe file, with no name and no data. When I try to run it,  the nxt shows a message telling that it is a bad file.
The trouble is that I do not know whether both problems are related and how to solve them. Any suggestions will be thanked!

The solution is to copy all files from nxttoolkit101patch.zip that corresponds to the labview 7.1, to the folder of your labview version. Then, mass compile your new toolkit and does all.

  • NXT-G block for HiTechnic Servo Controller

I'm trying to track down an NXT-G block for the HiTechnic Servo Controller. My son just purchased the controller at LEGO Ed but hasn't found a block for it. After a lot of searching, we did find a block for the HiTechnic DC Motor Controller ( http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/1129/lang/en ) and was hopeful that a similar block for the servo controller would be available somewhere. He has spent quite a few years working with RoboLab and NXT-G with LEGO robots and felt that the combination of the NXT, servo controller, and NXT-G 2.0 control and data logging would be perfect for his project.
    Cheers!

  • Problems getting started with LabVIEW FPGA

    Two (probably) related questions:
    1. I am trying to get started with LabVIEW FPGA, and I am having trouble using a host VI to test my FPGA VI. I started with a basic QAM modulator VI, to be run on the FPGA, and I have reached the point where I need to verify the logic and timing with this VI running on the development computer with simulated IO. I have tried various combinations of putting the code inside single-cycle timed loops vs not; putting the modulator block directly into the host VI, and using the "FPGA reference" block. When neither the host VI nor the modulator VI use a single-cycle timed loop, I see correct behavior. In every other case, the output of the VI is either absent or incorrect. I need to use a single-cycle timed loop in the FPGA VI to properly verify timing behavior (as far as I know), so the one functioning case is not enough for me.
I'm sure there is a key step I'm missing or misunderstanding, but I have not been able to figure it out myself yet. I've attached my modulator diagram as well as two different attempts at host VIs. I can share other information, but I'm not sure what is most relevant.
    2. I am also trying to test a simple wrapper VI for the Xilinx FFT block, and I am having trouble accessing FIFOs inside the host VI. I thought this would be relatively straightforward, but when I tried to change the "method" on an "invoke method" block, there were no options for accessing FIFOs, as I understood there should be. This is a total roadblock for me. These two diagrams are also attached, the test diagram shows the options available to me for the "invoke method" block.
    Labview 2013, PXIe-7965R, PXIe-8133 controller.
I had to combine the diagram images; in case they are hard to follow this way, see the individual images here: http://imgur.com/a/oB6OD .
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hello Monguin61
If you are having problems reading from DMA FIFO's you should test them using a very simple code to understand their behavior. First, you could start taking a look to the linked documents:
Reading DMA FIFOs from Host VIs (FPGA Interface)
Using DMA FIFO to Develop High-Speed Data Acquisition Applications for Reconfigurable I/O Devices
    FIFO.Read (Invoke Method)
Then you could test and analyze a simple example to understand how it works, for example this one: Simple DMA FIFO Example for FPGA.
Check the references when you are using DMA FIFO's, I noticed you did not connect them in the second picture attached.
