OAS Install Issues SUSE LINUX  [ulimit]

Like many others I am having issues installing OAS onto my SUSE EE Linux Server. The problem is that I cannot modify the ulimit for the oracle user (the user to install the OAS under). I have followed the directions found on the oracle site for installing 10g. I have also done a lot of searching regarding this issue and none seem to work. I have redone the process using orarun with these directions (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/php/installtxt/10gr2_sles9.txt) And I have followed directions found (http://www.novell.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=10096341&sliceId=&dialogID=6335233&stateId=0%200%206333704) regarding setting /etc/security/limits.conf, /etc/pam.d/login, and /etc/pam.d/xdm . Any help on this issue would be excellent!
The issue is that ulimit -n for oracle returns 1024 no matter what I do. And ulimit -n 6653 returns an error.

Ok its working now. Basically I didn't set "session required /etc/pam.d/pam_limits.so" in /etc/pam.d/xdm till late last night and I forgot to reboot the server. This morning when I was running ulimit -n 65536 to get the error msg it worked. So thanks for the quick response, but my problem is now solved.

  • Install of SuSE Linux 9.0 freezes early on

I recently upgraded to an MSI 865PE Neo2 motherboard, with a P4 2.8 GHz processor.  I've installed Windows XP Professional without difficulty, but I tried to install SuSE Linux 9.0 and it locks up early on in the boot process during "hardware detection."  Opinions on this forum about earlier versions of SuSE and the YaST program were fairly poor, and their own site says that support for the Neo2 is only "partial."  Has anyone gotten Linux to install successfully on this mobo, and if so, which flavor?

I have a Neo2-S and have mixed success w/ Linux as well.  I just tried SuSe Live 9.2 and it took me about 10 times to get it to boot.  I think the only thing that I changed when it actually booted was the option to make the boot screen verbose.  I hit something like F3 and changed that option.
Knoppix 3.3 works great for me
    Knoppix 3.4 doesn't boot
    Mandrake Move 10 doesn't boot
I may have some of the version numbers wrong because I am just typing them off of the top of my head.  I also have only tried the bootable CD version because I don't want to risk any conflicts w/ my Win XP.
I am also about to get a new 200 GB SATA drive and I know that is going to complicate things even further.  I just wish that the devs would spend more time working on hardware support so n00bs won't have probs when trying out Linux.
They really need to make all distro's of Linux be able to use all of the IDE/SATA channels in a system.  This is probably dependent on the kernel though.  I don't know that much about Linux.

  • Java 1.5 rpm install on Suse Linux 9.3

    Hi all,
I downloaded the jdk-1_5_0_17-linux-i586.rpm from SUN, and tried to install it via YaST on my Suse 9.3 box, but it won't install.
I click "Install Package with YaST" and then it just brings me to a blank screen.
Anyone else experience similar issues, or thoughts to workaround this?
    Cheers
    John

    Figured it out... thanks anyways.
If anyone else has a similar problem: First, run rpm -i on the jdsk.rpm, and make sure it passes the checksum. (Mine did not). Then, check to see if jdk1.5.0_17 was installed already via rpm command line util, instead of yast. Suse doesn't like it when you do that, and they don't play well together (yast and rpm command line).
I ran rpm -e on the package to remove it, and then ran the yast installer to re-install the jdk 1.5, and it is working now.

  • Production Release Install Issues on Linux

I just upgraded from the beta to the production relase on Linux (Suse 10.0).
The following issues were easy enough to bypass, but should be fixed in the next release nevertheless, to allow a Linux installation as smooth as under Windows:
    * calculation of required swap space: when I installed the beta in November I had 512MB RAM and 1GB swap - no problem at all. Meanwhile I upgraded to 1GB RAM, 1GB swap. The production release complained during install. Why would I need more swap to install Oracle after upgrading RAM? Should the script not instead check total memory (RAM+swap) and be happy?
    * second, related issue: the installer complained that I had only 850MB swap space, it supposedly required 1GB. Fact: I have 1GB swap space, but about 150MB were used at that time. Instead of checking the total swap space, the installer checked the free swap space. Solution was easy enough: swapoff -a ; swapon -a. All swap space free, installer runs...
    * during configuration (/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure) I selected not to automatically start Oracle at boot time. This set the ORACLE_DBENABLED variable (in /etc/sysconfig/oracle-xe) to false. Unfortunately this variable is used in /etc/init.d/oracle-xe to check before 'start' and 'stop'. As a result it was not possible to manually start and stop the database. Solution: either don't check the variable before start and stop or - as I did: set ORACLE_DBENABLED to true and prevent start at boot time by editing the runlevels (as should be).
Other than that: great product and great timing! Keep up the good work! Thanks a lot!
    Cheers,
    Peter

As an addendum to the above, I noticed that sqlplus failed wouldn't run - it was failing with messages such as:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27121: unable to determine size of shared memory segment
    Linux Error: 13: Permission denied
    and:
    ERROR:
ORA-27140: attach to post/wait facility failed
Through scanning countless posts on this forum the solution turned out to be:
    chmod u+s `which oracle`
    chmod g+s `which oracle`
Speaking as someone who is in Oracle's target audience for this product (small company, currently using open source DBs), I have to say that my experience of installing Oracle was pretty painful and was far more hassle than PostgreSQL, MySQL or even (heaven forbid) SQLServer. Come on Oracle, you can do better than this!

  • Install Oracle 10g on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10

Will 10g install on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10? If so, what setting do I need to change to get it to install?

Yes, it will install. Oracle supports it.Apparently they forgot to tell support. Certify still holds at SLES 9.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html
It's possible to make it work. However, I usually watch http://www.novell.com/products/server/oracle/matrix.html for info.

  • T500 and SUSE Linux

    Hi, There,
I would like to install the SUSE Linux on T500 as I had enough issues with the Windows VISTA and Windows 7 is not officially released yet. Has anybody out there recommend using the SUSE on T500. Lenovo site itself doesnt seem to offer the drivers and the thinkvantage software for Linux. So I'm I going to miss all that Thinkvantage stuff? Also without the Lenovo Vendor drivers will the system be stable and will not miss any essential features.
    Cheers,
    Max.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Not all features in thinkvantage may be available for  SuSE Linux, you can wait for windows 7 if your intention is to use a good OS.

    Dear Rajasekhar,
this error simply comes, because the architecture of your computer is not the same as the one from the test drive. As I'm not sure, which architecture the N4S test drive uses, we simply have one of the following situations here. Either
your machine is x86_64 and the N4S is i386 or
your machine is i386 and the N4S is x86_64.
    Please check!
    Thanks,

  • SUSE Linux 8.0 + 9iAS r2 = Success

Hi PPL, just reporting success and performance inscrease under Suse Linux 8.0:
I can say that Oracle 9iAS under Linux for me performs at least 25-30% faster than Windows. I've installed IAS and INFRA in only one machine:
    Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
    1 GB RAM
    1 SCSI 15kRPM IB DISK
    Adaptec Ultra 160 controller
    2 GB SWAP
I use PORTAL, FORMS, REPORTS and WIRELESS... I've installed the BUNDLED INTER-OPERABILITY PATCH Version of 9iAS r2, so i did not had to apply that patch. I've just applied today one CORE patch that was released in September for Linux/Unix versions and yesterday for Windows versions (patch 2542920)
I've used SUSE 8.0, installed the Korn Shell package (KSH) and followed instruction on this VERY USEFULL whitepaper at htis site : www.stute.net !
Remember to change SHMMAX parameters for the kernel as explained in www.puschitz.com !
My last installation was made in 3 hours (SUSE installation included)
Other tricks was i had to execute: xhost + as root to let oracle set DISPLAY and runInstaller! The linking errors were easily solved as explained in www.stute.net whitepaper.
I've created a script to startup the INFRA database, but i couldnt start up automatically all services (OC4J's, HTTP, WEBCACHE), so i start them manually in OEM site http://mysite:1810
I'm not a Linux GURU, but now i feels satisfied with performance and with stability.
More... in Linux i can compile my FORMS files (FMX) even when they are used by someone user in a forms session.
And even better is that PATCHS for Linux/Solaris usually are on "street" 1 month before Windows versions.
Of course, I go crazy everytime i found bugs, but usually they are not plataform related.

PS: If anyone needs help, i can give help online yusing ICQ messenger. My number is 23234761

    Hi
I installed on SUSE Linux 8.0 the 9iAS R2, only the option A - J2EE and WebChache. Now I have following problems.
    1. Some configuration tools (OC4J, OPMN, DCM)were not initialized in the end of the installation. I read other postings with the same problems, but i never read a solution of these problems.
    2. After installation, i want to start the http server manually (dctml start -ct ohs) , but it doesn't work. I got the error message ADMN 100999, i dont know why !
If i want to start the http-server with enterprise manager (EM worked partically) I got an EMException.
I have no idea to resolve the problems, perhaps you

  • OAS 4.0.7 on SUSE Linux 6.1 gets very slow or hangs

    Hallo out there,
we installed OAS 407 on a SUSE Linux 6.1 system with ORACLE
Server 8.0.5.0.0. After long time solving installation problems,
we are now able to start OAS via the OAS-Manager html page.
And we are able to launch a simple PL/SQL-application, which
produces the output of a system table. Now, the thing is, that we
can start this application once or twice or maybe a few times
more but then the system hangs or gets very slow, so that only a
hard reboot of the server machine works.
We configured the NR_TASKS parameter in tasks.h to get ulimit to
512 for the user processes. System seemed to work better then,
but maybe only a little bit better.
We have also got problems with domain-names and node-names, which
sometimes are just machinename, then machinename.domainname, then
    again machinename.badister.(none) .
If there is anyone out there who has got the same problems or
    solved them, please tell me.

I have wasted a lot of time trying to get OAS 4.0.7 to run with
a 2.2 kernel... it doesn't work, even after you've fixed all the
problems like to ps command for example, the listeners hang. I
now have it working on a 2.0 kernel, which is reasonably stable,
although I have to do a reboot every few days!

  • Is possible to install Application server 7 on SuSE linux 9.0

is possible to install Application server 7 on SuSE linux 9.0

Actually, this might not be the case since version 7 is based on native implementation of web container while version 8 is based on Tomcat (i.e. pure Java implementation). So, version 7 will definitely be more prone to platform specific issues.
Just something to have in mind...

  • Can't Install Solution Manager on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 - JAVA

    Hello everyone!
I've been trying to complete the pre-requisites in order to install Solution Manager SR2 on Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 x64 - SP1.
There's only one last condition that I haven't met, and it's the Java Runtime Environment version...
I checked the recommended note 867110 and it says that  i need to have installed the J2SDK 1.4.2_08.
SLES10 includes the 1.4.2_13, so I had to uninstall it, and download the right version from  Sun Microsystem's official webpage.
When I installed the version 1.4.2_08, i'm not able to run SAPINST because there's no Java Runtime Environment running on the server.
I started to investigate and I found in some forums [NOT EXPLICITLY] that there's no port for J2SDK 1.4.2_08 on x64 linux systems.
I can't believe this is true because SLES10 is recommended by SAP to install Solution Manager, so I hope somebody can help me on this.
My specific question is: Does anybody know if is true that J2SDK 1.4.2_08 is NOT COMPATIBLE with x64 Linux?
In case of being true, is there any way to be able to run SAPINST ? because if I enable the version SLES brings built in, i'm able to run the SAPINST but it detects that i'm not running version 1.4.2_08 and doesn't allow me to continue installation.
I hope somebody can help me soon...
    Regards!

    > SAPINST_JRE_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-s390-142/jre/bin:$PATH
    >
    > JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-s390-142/jre/bin:$PATH
You downloaded the wrong version - the one you have is for Z-Linux(Linux running on the mainframe - not for x64).
You need to download the x86_64 (or AMD64) version.
Install the correct one and try on a new console:
    export JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-amd64-142
    export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
    Then execute
    java -fullversion
and it should show the correct version.
