OBIEE Infrastructure - Set Up

We are in the process of setting up test and production environment for OBIEE deployment. Currently we have a development environment on a windows 2003 server and we are using OC4J server for the presentation and Dash board deployment.
Now we want to build a test and production environment and need some guidance. We are planning to install one more Windows servers for test and a LINUX for deploying the production repository. The questions we have are :
1. Is it a good / not good idea to have LINUX for production ?
2. Is OC4J server good enough to deploy the dashboard/presentation services? Do we have to use IIS / ORacle APPS server ?
3. How do we move the repository from one environment to another ?
4. Do we need to create separate backend database instances for dev and test ?
Hey Gurus please guide us on the above issues.
We appreciate your response on the aforementioned items.
Thanks !

1. Is it a good / not good idea to have LINUX for production ?The discussion on what's best, Windows or Linux, can go for ever. OBIEE is as good in Windows as it is in Linux. What's probably not a good a idea is to have different OSes for your different environments. You should use the same OS in each environment, otherwise how can you guarantee you will have OS specific issues that you might not see in Test?
2. Is OC4J server good enough to deploy the dashboard/presentation services? Do we have to use IIS / ORacle APPS server ?It's good enough, otherwise Oracle will not include it.
3. How do we move the repository from one environment to another ?You copy the RPD manually using Windows shares or FTP/SCP/etc.
4. Do we need to create separate backend database instances for dev and test ?Ideally yes, but that's not an OBIEE requirement. You can host all your environments in one DB using different schemas. Personally I would want to have separate databases and separate hardware for each environment.

  • New to OBIEE- Questions on OBIEE infrastructure..

    Hi Gurus/Experts,
I am very very new OBIEE technology. Our company decided to change the technology to OBIEE. So, We are in process of understanding the architecture and infrastructure for the same.
    I have couple of questions:
-the BI web server is the piece that has to run on Windows or It can run any machine?
-can the BI server and the BI scheduler server run in the same physical server (AIX) ?
Please let me if you are not clear on my questions.
It would be really great help..
    Warm regards,
    Ganesh Krishna.

-the BI web server is the piece that has to run on Windows or It can run any machine?Yes, OBIEE installers are available in different flavors like windows, LINUX, Solaris etc. You can have your BI web server (SAW) on any of the supported envn. Its not mandate to have it just on windows..
-can the BI server and the BI scheduler server run in the same physical server (AIX) ? Yes, both can run on same server. This is general practice..
    Refer OBIEE documentation here..

    Hope this clears your doubt.

  • How to set emails for multiple users?

    Hello,
We have a scenario, where there are several users whose email is not set in "My Account". We want to set this in one shot, what is the best bet for us?
Also we want to send email to a person outside OBIEE infrastructure, how can we do this?
    Please reply

I've found the same problem in OS X Lion, with Mail, iCal and Address Book getting confused when two Exchange accounts on the same server are configured, resulting in either missing or duplicate entries (despite everything appearing fine when accessing the accounts individually via Outlook or OWA).  iOS doesn't have any problem with this setup; two Exchange accounts on the same server work perfectly; the issue seems specific to Mac OS X.
After some experimentation I've found a workaround.  Since the issue crops up with two Exchange accounts on the same server, it seems possible to trick OS X into thinking the accounts are on two separate servers through a little DNS manipulation (which I realize may not be a practical option for everyone).  Here's what resolved the issue for me:
My external and internal DNS FQDNs for the mail server were mail.mydomain.com.
    I set up a new DNS entry - mail2.mydomain.com - as a CNAME for mail.mydomain.com.
On my Mac, I set up Exchange account #1 with the server set to mail.mydomain.com.
I then set up Exchange account #2 with the server set to mail2.mydomain.com.
Even though both FQDNs resolve to the same IP, this seems sufficient for Mac OS X to consider them as separate servers, elliminating the problems I had before when I set both Exchange accounts to the same mail server FQDN.
I've only tried this on OS X 10.7 Lion, and the recent 10.7.1 update, although I wouldn't be surprised if the same trick works for earlier versions of OS X.

    Hi,
I am trying to upgrade one of our SQL Server Enterprise (2008 (SP2)) to 2012. I am using the upgrade option but it gives me the following error:

Culture ID 3072 (0x0C00) is not a supported culture.
                            Parameter name: culture
This appears to be the root problem. It seems that the regional settings on this machine is messed up. 0x0C00 is an unusual LCID, they do not normally not end in two zeroes.
is there a custom culture installed on this machine?
Review the regional settings and also check the System locale. If it looks spooky, set it to Arabic - U.A.E. if this is where you are located.

  • Set SSIS variable = database connection manager name

Is it possible to set a SSIS string to only the name of a database connection manager or even the connection string it uses ? I don't see an option for that in Evaluate as expression property of ssis variable.
This is what I mean -
SSIS Connection manager name = SQL_DBASE
SSIS String str_managerName = SSIS Connection manager name: Can you do this dynamically in SSIS ?

I'm guessing what they really want to do is evaluate some indicator (some input from a user or an infrastructure setting) and then dynamically connect to any one of 10 (arbitrary example) database servers based on what they get as input.  They
don't care about the connection manager per se.  What seems reasonable is the that the Connection Manager might take a server variable but if they wanted to do things like that they would have bought Datastage.
You might try attacking this problem at the Control Level and then connect to the database you want based on a variable you set.   I'm seeing that a Sequence Container can branch on the contents of a variable.
Or if the dba is your friend you might get the dba to add all your servers as linked servers to a central connection machine and then you might be able to do this by putting the ssis variable in a "Sql Command from a Variable" variable.
It might look something like this:
Server is designated in ssis var @[User::Machine]
    then executing from a variable
    "select top 100 * from " + @[User::Machine] + ".mydb.dbo.mytable"
Be careful as hades about levels of indirection and what quotes you want at what level.  Evaluate Expression in ssis helps with this.  The syntax I show works only with an ms sql connection server to a remote ms sql server.  This is what a
dynamic connection to a linked server connection to Oracle would look like:
    "select * from
    openquery("+ @[User::Machine] + ",'select * from oradb.oratable where rownum < 100')"
When ever a thousand of your best friends are helping you connect to your database (using tools like linked servers as opposed to direct connections) it's probably best to use with only small specific updates or queries, large queries or large
updates would probably take a long time and or might not finish.  But try it before you give up.   We are actually doing fairly large Oracle queries (5-10 million rows) through ms sql linked server.

  • Unable to start the OBIEE 11.7  installation

    Hi All,
I'm trying to install OBIEE 11.7 version on my windows 7 (64 bit ) OS.
During the BI installation I am getting the error INST-08058 .
I searched and found about this blog,
OBIEE Eklavya: Setting Loopback adapter for OBIEE 11g installation
Trying to follow the procedure here but I am unable to update the hosts file in system32.
Can anyone pls help... I have been trying to install OBIEE since few days now... any help would be  greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Prathyusha

    Try these steps:-
Go through the ‘Add Hardware’ wizard (from the control panel).
From there, select Next to skip over the first two screens, then select ‘Yes, I have already added hardware’ and select next again.
Scroll to the bottom of the list on the following screen, and select the ‘Add a new hardware device’ option, click next again.
Select ‘Install the hardware that I manually select from a list’, and click next.
Select ‘Network Adapters’ from device types.
Select ‘Micorosoft’ as the manufacturer, and ‘Microsoft Loopback Adapter’ as the Network Adapter.
You’ll need to click next a few more times, then finish. This will add the Microsoft Loopback Adapter as a new Local Area Connection in your Network Connections list.
Next, open the Network Connections list, right click on the new network connection (I like to rename it to Loopback Adapter Connection) and select properties.
From here, you can select Internet Protocoal (TCP/IP) and click on the Properties button.
From the properties screen for TCP/IP, select ‘Use the following IP address’ and fill in an IP address (make sure to pick something not within your current subnet!) eg. 13.13.13.1, type in an appropriate subnet mask, eg 255.255.255.0, and a gateway (this can be the address of your VMWare host if you are using a virtual machine).
Also fill in the DNS server information (if in doubt, do an ipconfig /all from your command line to get your current host settings).
Click OK and close the properties window.
From Network Connections, click Advanced, and select Advanced Settings from the menu.
Make sure your loopback adapter network connection is at the top of the Connections list (use the up/down arrows if not)
Finally, modify your hosts file to associate your static IP address with your computer name.
    Open your windows\system32\drivers\etc\ folder.
Open the hosts file with Notepad.
Add an entry for your static IP, for example:
13.13.13.1 WhateverYourComputerNameIs.YourDomainSuffix(if you have one defined)
    ==============
    Hope this helps to install.

  • OBIEE reverse engineering to go from SQL Server to a data warehouse

    Hi,
I'm new to data modeling for warehouses. We currently have an OBIEE environment set up where the data source was SQL Server transactional tables. The SQL Server data is to be moved to a non-Oracle data warehouse and I need to produce a logical data model for the warehouse folks at my company. Unfortunately, the SQL Server data was never modeled, so, I'm basing the model from the Logical and Physical diagram/relationships of OBIEE.
My question is in regards to the validity of the following relationship to be used in a data warehouse based on what's currently in OBIEE. When I model this via Erwin, I'm wondering if I'm way off base in the relationships (modeling, not personal):
    Dimension 1 has a 0:M with Dimension 2
    Dimension 1 has a 0:M with Dimesion 3
    Dimension 2 has a 0:M with Dimension 3
    Both Dimension 2 and Dimension 3 have a 0:M with Fact 1
Through the use of aliases and such, this does work in OBIEE. Will this work as a data model for a data warehouse environment?
    Thanks!

I think you started with the wrong foot. I suggest you search in Google for "kimball methodology" and have a read at a few articles. Your DWH model should not be based on your transactional tables. You should ask your business users what "questions" they want to answer in the DWH. Then model your DWH base on that. You can not model a DWH without knowing what questions you need to answer. For instance if your business users want to know the sales per day and per branch you will a sales fact with a sales amount measure joining to two dimensions branch and time dimension. The number of facts will depend on the questions you need to answer, the type of data and the granularity of them.

  • Custom sign in page OBIEE 11g

    Hello all,
I have almost did it :D
I followed the instructions of rittman mead --> http://www.rittmanmead.com/2010/12/oracle-bi-ee-11g-styles-skins-custom-xml-messages/
But the last step is missing :/
I have a folder with sk_pageaccuei, s_pageaccueil and WEB_INF which is cold analyticsRes.
It is located here : /opt/oracle/obiee/middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent/coreapplication_obips1/
I have changed the logo and i'm able to see it by enter the url.
The problem is, when I add these following lines in my instanceconfig, the presentation server does not restart !
    <URL>
    <CustomerResourcePhysicalPath>
    /opt/oracle/obiee/middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent/coreapplication_obips1/analyticsRes
    </CustomerResourcePhysicalPath>
    <CustomerResourceVirtualPath>/analyticsRes</CustomerResourceVirtualPath>
    </URL>
    <UI>
    <DefaultStyle>pageaideaccueil</DefaultStyle>
    <DefaultSkin>pageaideaccueil</DefaultSkin>
    </UI>
Could you tell me where i'm doing a mystake ?
My OBIEE is sets up on a Linux platform...
    Thanks a lot,
    Antoine

I seem to have found conflicting information on the resource virtual path. In one instance docs say the default is '/Res' but other docs say the default is '/analyticsRes'. My guess is if this is reserved internally to default to '/analyticsRes' and then fall back to '/Res' then attempting to overwrite the default with instanceconfig using a reserved word would throw an error.
    1) Did you try the instanceconfig without the virtual path to /analyticsRes?
    2) Does the saw.log indicate why the restart failed?

  • Multiple OBIEE installations on Linux

Are there any issues or gotchas to installing multiple full OBIEE infrastructures (specifically, OAS 10.1.3.3.0 and OBIEE 10.1.3.4.0) on a RH Linux box? I want to have two separate stacks present, one acting as Dev and one as UAT on the same hardware, if possible. Is this even possible? How adaptive are the various components (OAS, OBIEE) to port selection when the default ports are already in use? And if it can be "done" then should it be done with the second install done within a separate shell account / owner, or can I simply install additional ORACLE_HOMES (and ORACLEBI_HOMEs and ORACLEBIDATA_HOMEs...) under the same shell account?

    Bob,
there're no issues to what you're trying to accomplish - just make sure the port #s are different (bi server and presentation services)...
I'd suggest a different account for simplicity sake - but you should be fine with different homes
Do you have a copy of a deployment guide?

I have Installed BI Applications 7.9.5 on windows server 2003 , but the size of the OracleBIAnalyticsApps.rpd
    is just 2 kb.
I have stopped all the services of OBIEE-Infrastructure components(BI-Server services, BI-Presentation service ,Etc..) and
Installed the BI-Applications, the Installation was successful ,
but by seeing the size of the reporsitory itself , we felt something wrong has happened.
Soumyaa(a member in this group) , i hope You have faced a similar problem , how did you fixed.
Do we to need to Uninstall the BI-applications and make new download of the BI-Applicaion S/w..and start the installation once again.
    regards
    saran

    Hi all ,
I came across a reference link for this
1>while BIEE installation we selected Advenced Option,
2> on top of it we intalling BI -applications
please refer the below, the step 2
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12127_01/doc/bia.795/e12087/chapter.htm
    under the section "1.3.29 "
Installation Errors With Oracle Applications Server Advanced Security Option
When installing the Oracle Business Intelligence Applications on top of an installation of the Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition that was installed using the Oracle Applications Server advanced security option, the following error message will be displayed:
"Password length is less than the required minimum, 8"
Oracle Business Intelligence Applications installation will abort and the OracleBIAnalyticsApps.rpd file will be corrupted.
The error happens because the MINIMUM_PASSWORD_LENGTH setting in the NQSConfig.ini file was set to 8 by the OBIEE installation. The workaround is to change the value of MINIMUM_PASSWORD_LENGTH to 0 in NQSConfig.ini, install Oracle Business Intelligence Applications, then change the value back to 8.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I would like to add that if you see summary.txt file you would see
    Message:
Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1).
error CS0009: Metadata file 'c:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System\2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\System.dll' could not be opened -- 'File is corrupt'
    HResult : 0x84b10001
    FacilityCode : 1201 (4b1)
    ErrorCode : 1 (0001)
You can see file is corrupt. So either you have to download the setup file again or there can be chance that Antivirus caused some issue.
Plus if you see starting of summary.txt you could see
    Requested action: LandingPage
The error message came while landing page was being loaded/or was in action so again I think it is some thing related to corrupt media or antivirus.
    Please
    1. Download ISO file again and extract using WINRAR, don't use Winzip
    2. Disable Antivirus.
    3. Make a new folder and extract installable there.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it
