ObjExclusion & LOCAL_INTERACTION_ALLOWED
Hi all,
I am looking for some advice on the benefits and downfalls of doing the following.
Addition of a Registry key to modify the 'local interaction' behaviour or APP-V.
(Will create the following registry information:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions
Valuename: 94
Datatype: REG_SZ
Data: *
Firstly, a bit of backgorund. We have some locally installed applications which need to interact with any virtualised application. The locally installed software is magnification software and screen reading software which is required for people with sight
and hearing impairments.
The problem is that the screen reading software is not reading the data inside the Virtualised applications window. We have implemented the type of fix written about by Dan Oxley here -
http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2011/07/05/allowing-better-interaction-to-app-v-virtual-applications.aspx. However, this doesn't seem to work for the next iteration of the software and also we have discovered some more software that needs
to read from the other APPV bubbles.
I know that setting LOCAL_INTERACTION_ALLOWED for each APP-V application would solve my issue but we are not going to revisit all of our applications and make this change. Also, this is a bit of a sledghammer approach in my view. So, Dan Oxley's approach
of setting the relevant registry keys in the ObjExclusion registry key is the way forward. To find these for the working application we used ProcessExplorer and the process described above.
My question is this, why would you not set the registry key to a wildcard - "*"?
What are the disadvantages of doing this? Setting this registry key to "*" has fixed some of our applications but I'm afraid it will cause further problems with other applications and how applications interact with eachother. Any input/advice would
be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Sparks
Hi There,
Firstly setting LOCAL_INTERACTION_ALLOWED to TRUE does not necessarily allow your local applications to view your virtual applications. It allows certain components of the virtual applications to be accessible by the locally installed applications and system.
Namely COM components. These will run with a less restrictive form of isolation. Have you already confirmed that this will work for sure? Have you tested in a Dev environment?
The risk is introducing conflicts. The benefit of isolation is meant to be that it removes the risk of application conflicts, if you have a virtual application with something in it that's also on the local system and it attempts to run outside the virtual
bubble, it might stomp all over the already running local instance and throw some errors.

Warning - KB2984972 and App-V 4 and App-V 5 Packages
The above Security Update went on to all of our W7 PC last night as part of Patch Tuesday and broke a large number of our existing 4.6 Autodesk related packages. AutoCAD itself was not affected but Revit, Navis, DWG TrueView all were. Not got to the bottom
of why yet (the explanation for the update does not sound like it would make any difference) but simply removing the update from client PCs fixes the packages which will do me for now. If you have any control over when security updates go on to your PCs I
advise on checking it outI want to make everyone aware that this issue has been identified and a workaround documented in the KB below. It is a good idea to add this registry key proactively in your environments before installing KB 2984972.
Update for RDC 7.1 to support restricted administration logons on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2984972
Resolution
To resolve this known issue, configure the TermSrvReadyEvent registry entry on the computer where the Microsoft Application Virtualization Client is installed.
For Microsoft Application Virtualization 5.0
Registry Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Subsystem\ObjExclusions
Value name: 93 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent
Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add the entry to a system running Application Virtualization 5.0:
reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Subsystem\ObjExclusions /v 93 /t REG_SZ /d TermSrvReadyEvent
For Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.6
For all supported x86-based systems
Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions
Value name: 95 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent
Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add the entry to an x86-based system running Application Virtualization 4.6:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions /v 95 /t REG_SZ /d TermSrvReadyEvent
For all supported x64-based systems
Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions
Value name: 95 (Or any unique value)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: TermSrvReadyEvent
Example
For example, type the following command at an elevated command prompt to add the entry to an x64-based system running Application Virtualization 4.6:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\ObjExclusions /v 95 /t REG_SZ /d TermSrvReadyEvent

Hi I see the question posted but the admin didn't give the answer could someone tell me how to fix this problem, Windows 8 and am not a teccie so please give answer in easy instructions. It has not worked from the start, I bought this laptop last thursday. Thanks
What we did is setting the TMP and the TEMP variable during sequencing to 'C:\ProgramData\GoogleTemp'. As a result, the OSD looks like this:

Problem opening PDFs within an App-V session of Internet Explorer
I've seen similar post to this problem but no solution.
Problem is I am delivering a web based application using App-V. This works fine except when the User tries to open PDFs. This fails with the following error - "Adobe PDF Document" "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader"
"If it is running, please exit and try again"
I've tried the following scenarios, all fail.
Test with Reader already open and with it not open.
LOCAL_INTERACTION_ALLOWED set to TRUE or FALSE
Windows XP or Windows 7
Sequencing with Reader 10 installed which produces a different "Visual C++ Runtime error" on Windows XP (within the sequencing Process I'm unable to open a PDF document) Sequencer is 4.6.2.24020.
Reader Protected Mode turned Off or or Enabled (outside the App-V bubble)
Failure testing internal and external PDFs
Reader 11 makes no difference, still get the same failues.
Using ProcMon I can see AcroRd32.exe running but failing with "Access denied" error's writing to the Users's %Appdata%\Adobe folder and %temp% folders (permssions should not be an issue, User has full control). Last Access denied failure
is "C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0\UserCache.bin"(still fails is this is deleted or already exists)
It works fine just opening a PDF in a non-App-V IE session. I don't want to include Reader inside the IE Bubble.
Has anyone foudn a resolution to this? Thanks in advance for help.
Shaun PDXIf you're using Reader X, have you tested with this guide from Adobe? http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/appv.html

The Definitive Guide to Delivering Microsoft Office with App-V -
discovered that v-Adobe Reader fails to open a particular report from a web page.
Locally installed Reader works well.
I sequenced AR 6 month ago following the instructions on APPV recipes site (one of well known).
Before starting a new sequencing I would like to ask a suggestion/s.
I found instructions on Adobe site (updated Dec 2014). Can somebody review if all this should be done because they refer to appv 4.6 and I am running 5 sp2 HF5.
The most important for me points are 2, 19 and 26. Sure that we don't have Q: but PVD that I place on C:\Folder
The original link to official Adobe APPV deployment is here:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/appv.html
My goal is to make fully enabled READER. Probably, before clicking I finished I will double check all preferences.
Thanks.
Creating an App-V package¶
Administrators can create their own App-V Reader package from scratch. Alternatively, use the Pkg Accelerator as described in
Using the Pkg Accelerator.
Sequencing Adobe Reader XI¶
Prepare the sequencing machine following the guidelines provided in Microsoft’s
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd351420.aspx.
Note
Failure to adhere to the best practices and following guidelines can cause errors in functionality. You may find it worthwhile to follow the MS example in Microsoft’s
http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/7/8/F784A197-73BE-48FF-83DA-4102C05A6D44/App-V/App-V%204.6%20Service%20Pack%201%20Sequencing%20Guide.docx.
To prepare a reference machine for sequencing:
Install the App-V Sequencer.
Configure the registry:
Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SoftGrid\4.5\SystemGuard\Overrides.
Create a DWORD EnableVFSPassthrough.
Set the value to 1.
Start the Microsoft Sequencer.
Select Create a new Virtual Application Package > Create Package.
Choose Next.
If there are any warnings on the Prepare Computer screen, take the needed actions to correct them.
Choose Next.
On the Type of Application screen, select
Standard Application as the default type.
Choose Next.
On the Select Installer screen, enter the path to your product installation files.
Choose Next.
In the Package Name screen, enter an application name (such as Adobe Reader XI) in the
Virtual Application field.
In the Installation screen, change INSTALLDIR to Q:\<Package
Name> (such as Adobe Reader XI), and follow the installation steps.
After the installation completes, check I am finished installing.
Choose Next.
After the application collects the system changes, choose Next.
In the Configure screen, run Adobe Reader XI to complete first run tasks such as accepting the EULA.
Review the Installation Report which detects common sequencing issues during sequencing.
On the Customize screen choose Customize:
Choose Edit Shortcuts.
On the Edit Shortcuts screen, choose Add.
Browse to each the following (change the path as needed) and choose
Save:
Q:\<Package Name>\Reader\Reader\AdobeCollabSync.exe
Q:\<Package Name>\Reader\Reader
\AcroRd32Info.exe
Q:\<Package Name>\Reader\Reader\PDFPrevHndlrShim.exe
Edit the versions of all the four exes from 11.0.0.379 to 11.0.0.
Choose Next without further customizations.
In the Prepare for Streaming screen, run the application to create the primary feature block. Feature block 1 and Feature block 2 are required:
Feature Block 1: The minimum necessary block of data required for successful launch
Feature Block 2: Streamed to the client PC as the user starts using the application
As each application shuts down, choose Next.
On Restrict Operating Systems for this package screen, select the operating systems on which this package should work.
Choose Next.
Save the package by clicking on Create button.
Close the package.
Open all of the OSD files in a text editor and do the following:
For each OSD, change the value of LOCAL_INTERACTION_ALLOWED tag from FALSE to TRUE under the <POLICIES> tag.
Add the following policies in all of the OSD files under the <POLICIES> tag:
<VIRTUAL_FILE_SYSTEM_PASS_THROUGH>TRUE</VIRTUAL_FILE_SYSTEM_PASS_THROUGH>
<VIRTUAL_REGISTRY_PASS_THROUGH>TRUE</VIRTUAL_REGISTRY_PASS_THROUGH>
<ENFORCE_ACLS_ON_VREG_MODIFY>TRUE</ENFORCE_ACLS_ON_VREG_MODIFY>
Optional (This step is only needed when there will be both a local Acrobat and App-V Reader on the system): Remove the following lines from the Reader XI OSD:
<FILEEXTENSION EXT="pdf" PROGID="AcroExch.Document.11" PERCEIVEDTYPE="" CONTENTTYPE="application/pdf" OVERRIDDEN="FALSE">
<SHELLNEW ENABLED="FALSE"/>
</FILEEXTENSION>
Save the OSD files.
Launch the Sequencer and Reopen the package in Edit Mode.
Choose the OSD tab.
From all the OSDs except Adobe Reader XI, remove all the shortcuts under MGMT_SHORTCUTLIST element.
Disable updates:
Go to the Virtual Registry System.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Adobe
Acrobat\11.0\FeatureLockDown.
Create a new DWORD called bUpdater.
Set the value to 0.
Save the package so that the changes are saved in the manifest file.
--- When you hit a wrong note its the next note that makes it good or bad. --- Miles DavisI'd recommend that you don't follow that recipe as there's a lot there that's App-V 4.6 specific BUT, having said that, point # 32 is still relevant (setting bUpdater to 0)
Also, see this - https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2900929
Aaron Parker has delved very deeply into the deployment of Acrobat Reader in an enterprise environment so you will find a lot of good info on settings etc here: http://stealthpuppy.com/adobe-reader-xi-deployment/
So you didn't have any luck troubleshooting the web page / report problem? -
Disable Protected Mode Reader 11
All,
I have found articles on Adobe's website about disabling protected mode -
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown]
"bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
[HKCU\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11\Priviledged]
"bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
With both these settings turned on when you start up adobe and view edit > preferences it displays protected mode as being disabled however if I open task manager then open adobe reader I can see 1 instance of AcroRD32.exe - when I then open a PDF file via file > open browser to a PDF file I can see another 2 instances of AcroRD32.exe inside task manager. I thought this behavior was down to PM being enabled as it would spawn multiple instances of this to ensure it runs in sandboxing mode? The problem I have is we use an application inhouse which whitelist's only approved .dll's and .exe's and because Reader continues to spawn multiple instances of Reader even with these registry settings enabled I continue to hit issues getting Reader to work with my whitelist application.
Is there a way that when you open Reader it will only ever open 1 instance of AcroRD32.exe or is the behavior I am seeing by design even with Protected Mode disabled?
ThanksSolution : Open OSD file and modify the part "Policies"

Cant open Virtual drive if LOCAL INTERACTION is enabled (App-V 4.6)
hello
There is some strange i have observed. If the LOCAL INTERACTION is False then i can access the files from the Virtual Drive configured (using the sfttray comands), however for the same shortcut if i enable the LOCAL INTERACTION i can access the files, clicking
on the Virtual Drive gives error "Access denied".
Is this something known/ any way to tackle this?
Thanks in advanceHi,
I actually never tried that, but what _could_ happen with Local_Interaction_Allowed is that you create a COM object conflict: This settings 'exposes' virtualized COM objects to the local system.
There was an blog post talking about that at
http://softwaredeployment.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/enable_local_interaction-clarification-and-busted-myths/, however this one moved to another location (and can't be found there, either).
I tried to open the above page from Google Cache (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:dwt9uQV20j4J:softwaredeployment.wordpress.com/2011/04/04/enable_local_interaction-clarification-and-busted-myths/+&cd=4&hl=de&ct=clnk,
but my current proxy block that.
