ODBC Driver-specific TNSName issue

I seem to be having a problem resolving TNSnames frm a local TNS file that is unique to the ODBC driver and would appreciate suggestions.
I have Oracle Client 10.2.0.3 and the like-versioned ODBC driver, on Windows Vista SP1. We are configured to use a central TNS Names file with an IFILE entry that includes a per-user names file. The IFILE entry looks like this:
IFILE=h:\oracle_tns\tnsnames.ora
(Everyone has an H drive in our environment).
The Oracle ODBC Driver, ONLY, seems to not be able to use names in the 'included' personal names file (you always get a name not resolved error). Interestingly, the dropdown list in the TNS Service Name part of the Oracle DNS configuration dialog has an entry for 'IFILE', and not any entries for the names in the included file. Even manually entered names don't work.
HOWEVER, these same names work fine with both SQL*Plus and the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle.
Looks like a bug in the Oracle ODBC driver - though I can't understand why it's doing name lookup differently than SQL*Plus is. ANyway, did a look with Process Monitor and verified that doing a test connection in the ODBC DSN configuraiton dialog doesn't even try to open the 'included' file, just the central one, while doign the same thing with SQL*Plus DOES open the 'included' file.
Can anyone confirm this issue occurs and/or doesn't occur, and with other ODBC driver versions? Anyone know of any fiix or workaround to get my included file's names to work?

Doh.
I have figured out my problem.
We have a custom set of policy for Vista UAC in our setup, especially for 'privileged users', who have administrator-like permissions. When these users get elevated, some quirk in how things works means they lose a few things - one of those things is the 'H' drive. I noticed that eaerlier in testing our new PC iamges but hadn't tweaked to the ramifications. I'll have to ask our Windows admin guys why it works that way; not an Oracle issue, anyhow.
I'd been testing the Oracle ODBC driver using the ODBC Administrator applet.
When you start the applet, and you're a 'privileged user', you get the UAC elevation prompt.
So I was, in effect, disconnecting my H drive. Needless to say, that disconnected me from my personal names file...
Tested with an ODBC-enabled app, not elevated, and everything works fine.
Thanks for the suggestion to check with purely-local files, which got me started; would've taken quite a bit longer to figure things out otherwise!

  • ODBC Driver needs TNSNAMES.ORA unlike MS Driver which allows full qualified connect?

    We are looking at moving from using the MS ODBC/OLEDB providers for Oracle (contained in MDAC 2.7) to Oracle's own 8i/9i ODBC driver & OLEDB provider (because we need UNICODE support, which is lacking in the MS drivers).
    For our 3-tier application, we build fully qualified ODBC/OLEDB dynamic connection strings at run-time (for DB2, ORACLE and SQL_SERVER) and pass these connections string around between tiers of our app. Provided the client PC has the basic connectivity for the necessary RDBMS platform, the connection string works.
    The MS Drivers for ORACLE enable you to specify a fully qualified string in the SERVER argument like so:
    SERVER=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(COMMUNITY=tcp.world)(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=<HostName>)(Port=<PortNumber>))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=<SID>)))
    So does the ORACLE OLEDB provider.
    However, I can't get the ORACLE ODBC driver (9.0.0) driver to accept this using the DBQ argument (the equivalent of SERVER=). I can only get it to work if I make an entry in TNSNAMES.ORA and then say DBQ=<TNSNAMES.ORA Alias>, which is useless to us because of our "dynamic" requirements; we can't go around to every client in advance and update the TNSNAMES.ORA file because we do not which clients will want to access which database, or when.
    Has anybody managed to get fully qualified TNS strings to work with the 8i/9i Oracle driver?
    Alastair

    My understanding from looking into this a while ago was that this used to work, but stopped working in some version of the driver. If you search this forum, I'm reasonably sure there will be a thread on this that goes into more detail than I currently remember.
    I don't recall whether the most recent version of the Oracle ODBC driver fixes this bug. I would strongly suggest downloading an updated driver from OTN to test for yourself. If this is still a bug in the most recent version of the driver, there ought to be a TAR opened in Metalink on it. Someone may have posted a workaround or an estimate of when this bug will be fixed.

  • Oracle ODBC Driver Specifc Error Codes

    Dear All,
    I'm currently working in a migration assignment.I'm looking for a Technical document which consists error codes specific to Oracle ODBC Driver(ver.9.00.11.00).Any help in this regard will be appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Sam

    There shouldn't be any Oracle ODBC Driver specific error codes. When you're talking about ODBC and error codes, there are two possibilities-
    1) You're looking at the SQLState return codes. These are part of an ISO standard (they're more than happy to sell you a copy) and are documented in the ODBC Programmer's Reference from Microsoft as well as most decent ODBC guides.
    2) You're looking at the Oracle specific error codes that are returned as the error text in ODBC. These (potentially) depend on the version of the database you're connecting to, rather than the version of the client software you have, and are covered in Oracle's error message manual available at tahiti.oracle.com

  • "tnsnames.ora" file & ODBC driver

    It seems ODBC drivers do not need TNS listeners!
    I need to find out how ODBC drivers determine the path of "tnsnames.ora" file!
    (I have many Oracle installations on my machine.)
    null

    I believe that the ODBC driver will use the tnsnames file in the primary Oracle home. You can use the Oracle home selector to select your primary home.
    Note that, at the moment, the Oracle ODBC driver is supported only when installed in a single Oracle home on a machine.

  • Odbc Driver error when using specific date column

    I am receiving the this error:
    Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    Error DetailsError Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 46036] Internal Assertion: Condition len <= desc->objectLength_, file ..\Oci8\Src\SQXDGOci8.cpp, line 614. (HY000)
    It happens when I try to to set criteria on a specific date column or I do not set criteria at all. If I set date column 1 to greater than 4 or so months back the report returns, along with all the dates from date column 2. But if I then try to set date column 2 as the criteria, no matter if I just ask for data from a week until today, I receive this error. I tried changing the Server Stack size to 512, but that did not help. Anyone have an idea on this???

    You seem to be using an ODBC connection with an Oracle database, is that correct? If so you should install the Oracle client and use the OCI driver instead and it is much faster and stable than ODBC.

  • Oracle 11g dg4odbc OpenLink postgres odbc driver for Linux... Integer issue

    We were using scuccessfully the openlink driver for postgres odbc driver to connect oracle and postgres in solaris and oracle 10g hsodbc
    we are migrating to Linux Oracle 11g and installed linux psotgres odbc driver and configured oracle 11g dg4odbc gateway.
    We could connect from oracle and retrive the data from postgres.
    Issue we have is
    The integer data is not showing correctly…
    For example in the postgres the value is 1 and in oracle its shown as 4294967297.

  • Oracle 9i Lite Issue with ODBC driver

    Cannot reference table in user schema without schema ref
    I create a user TESTUSR and a table TESTTBL, and when I log in with user TESTUSR in SQL*Plus,
    the following will work just fine.
    SELECT * FROM TESTTBL
    but then when my ASP on IIS does the same SELECT,
    it will report "[POL-5130] table or view not found".
    But if I use a schema alias,
    SELECT * FROM TESTUSR.TESTTBL
    it will work fine.
    ODBC Admin shows: "Oracle Lite 40 ODBC Driver 4.00.00.00".
    Is this a bug ?

    I connect to the database through the same user that created those tables. Do I still need a public synonym ?

  • Oracle 9i Lite ODBC driver issues

    Does the 9i Lite driver support a concept of username and password when getting a connection?
    With the Oracle 8i Personal ODBC driver, we are doing this, and then if we give a query like 'SELECT CASE_ID FROM CASE_AX', it works; but with the Lite driver, it expects the query to be 'SELECT CASE_ID FROM AXAPG2USER.CASE_AX'. Can we somehow avoid giving the schema name when referring to tables? (This is actually not a big problem, but we would still like to know if there is a way.)

    Are you logging in as AXAPG2USER? Generally, Oracle assumes that non-qualified table names are in the current user's schema. If you want to expose tables in one user's schema to another user without having to qualify the table name, you'll want to create a synonym in the second user's schema that resolves to the table in the first user's schema.

  • Jdbc:odbc driver connection issues

    I need to use the jdbc:odbc driver to access a non-oracle db from a jsp. I am sure my dsn is fine as I can use a non JSP java app to connect to the odbc db. I have loaded the sun.jdbc.odbc classes in the schema I am working in as it is not loaded by default in 9.2.0.7 currently I am on a windows system. I have found the following:
    public static void doTest()throws Exception{
    // load the local Oracle Driver
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    connLocalOracle = new OracleDriver().defaultConnection();
    // load the odbc driver
    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
    if I exit at this point the jsp does not through an exception
    however if I include the line:
    connODBC = DriverManager.getConnection(odbcURL,"XX","XX");
    I get the error:
    SQL> execute do_jdbc_odbc_test;
    BEGIN do_jdbc_odbc_test; END;

    ORA-06512: at "TU1.DO_JDBC_ODBC_TEST", line 0
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    So I am assuming I am loading the driver but the driver is not talking to the odbc configuration in windows.
    What permissions would I need to give to the user to allow this connection to occur?
    How can I find out if this is indeed the case?
    If not how can I make this connection happen using ODBC?

    If by jsp you mean Java Stored Procedure, the hybrid JDbc-ODBC stack won't work. You can connect to non-Oracle RDBMS from within Java in the database by using a pure Java JDBC driver of the target RDBM. Fwiw, a complete example connecting to SQl Server from with JavaDB is described in my upcoming book. (See http://db360.blogspot.com/)

  • After Upgrade OBI 10g to 11g:Odbc driver returned an error - SQLExecDirectW

    Hi all,
    for an OBI upgrade from 10g to 11g I used a RPD and Webcatalog based on a remote machine other than my local machine. Firstable I am making the tests on a Linux Virtual machine, which uses the Sample Lite version from Oracle.
    I made the following steps:
    1. I upgraded the RPD and Webcatalog. It worked without any errors.
    2. I set the static variable BI_EE_HOME via Administration Tool to the path in the Linux machine.
    --> Here I am not sure if the set path is correct. It begins with: \bi\ ...\instances\...\coreapplication_obis1 (... : I can't mention here the whole path name).
    --> When the OBI Server is installed in Windows, the mentioned static variable points to something like 'C:\<install folder>\...\coreapplication_obis1'
    --> Question: is the begin of my set path correct?. I set that pointing to the Linux OBI Server, because the OBI Server is installed on Linux.
    Problem:
    After login as the user in RPD: Administrator/<Password for my upgraded RPD> I can see the links in the Catalog and the Dashboards links. But I can not see any values, any Reports when going through the links.
    For example when trying to see a Dashboard with date 12.02.2011it happens:
    Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    Status: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] general error.
    [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS.
    [nQSError: 43119] Query Failed:
    [nQSError: 17001] Oracle Error code: 12154, message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    at OCI call OCIServerAttach.
    [nQSError: 17014] Could not connect to Oracle database. (HY000)
    SQL Issued: SELECT "Dimension_-_My Dimension"."MyDimension" saw_0 FROM "Accounting (ACC)" WHERE "Dimension_-_My Dimension"."MyDimension" LIKE 'J%' ORDER BY saw_0
    I think its not retrieving the data from the remote database, because I don't have the data of the remote database in my local. I think the OBI Server still is pointing to the local virtual machine Oracle database.
    Can anybody tell me what happens here and how can I solve this problem?.
    I would appreciate any help....

    Hi gerardnico,
    I've tried many things and did as in your articles, but I don't have success with that.
    These are the things I did:
    1. I searched for the file tnsnames.ora in my Linux virtual machine. I could find it in many paths:
    /.../Oracle_BI1/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/hs/admin/tnsnames.ora.sample
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
    /.../oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/temp/tnsnames.ora
    /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin
    in the last path I found the listener.ora as well.
    2. I took the tnsnames.ora from the last path, because the ORACLE_HOME points to /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
    3. I edited the tnsnames.ora this way:
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File:
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host_of_the_remote_machine)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = database_name_of_the_remote_machine)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = database_SID_of_the_remote_machine)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    4. I made a backup of the tnsnames.ora in path /.../Oracle_BI1/network/admin/samples/tnsnames.ora
    and copied the tnsnames.ora from /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin to the Oracle_BI1 path
    5. I set the TNS_ADMIN to /.../usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin
    6. I restarted the BI Server
    No success in what I did. The error is still there.
    7. I've tried also: sqlplus database_user_remote_machine/database_password_remote_machine@database_SID_remote_machine
    I didn't get the connection:
    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Thu Jun 16 04:36:10 2011
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    ERROR:
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    Enter user-name: database_user_remote_machine
    Enter password:
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
    ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
    Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
    What am I doing wrong here?. I am still thinking that I need the import of the database.
    Additional SID=Service-Name=Database-name in the remote machine.

  • Odbc driver error while OBIEE instal on LINUX tries to access Datawarehouse

    Hi All,
    I have installed OBI Apps on a LINUX machine.The ETL too ran successfully.As we can't install BI tool on LINUX I modified the OracleBIAnalyticsApps.rpd file on a Windows machine and copied it back to the LINUX machine.After modifying the NSQConfig.ini file I could see all the OBI Apps answers and Dashboards ie OBI Apps was installed on LINUX.But whwnever I try to access some data from OLAP i get the following error:
    Odbc driver returned an error (SQLExecDirectW).
    Error Details
    Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
    State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 16023] The ODBC function has returned an error. The database may not be available, or the network may be down. (HY000)
    SQL Issued: SELECT Time."Year" FROM "Human Resources - Workforce Profile" ORDER BY 1
    Probably this is because all the DSN specified in the rpd file were present on the Windows machine.I don't know how to modify these values for LINUX.Please help.Nothing is mentioned in the install docc as far as LINUX installation is concerned.
    regards,
    Soumya.

    I think when your BI Server is running on linux, you would use native drivers to connect to your data warehouse database and not ODBC. If your data warehouse is on a oracle db server, change the call interfact in the RPD connection pool to OCI and give the tnsname for the db server connection in the connection pool.

  • Oracle 10g ODBC driver with Windows 7 32 bit connecting to Excel

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm having an issue connecting to our oracle 10g database (64 bit system) from a 32 bit windows 7 installation running excel 2010/2007 using odbc drivers. Our excel spreadsheets worked without issue in windows xp.
    In windows 7 I have been able to install the odbc driver via the following method:
    1. Download the oracle 'basic' client and oracle 'odbc' client from www.oracle.com and extract the contents:
    instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115
    instantclient-odbc-win32-10.2.0.3-20061115
    2. Create a folder 'oracle' and place the instantclient_10_2 folder inside.
    3. Ensure all the basic and odbc files reside in this folder.
    4. Create a 'network' folder within instantclient_10_2
    5. Create an 'admin' folder within 'network'
    6. Create sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files within the 'admin' folder:
    7. Run 'obdc_install' within the instantclient_10_2 folder
    8. Download and run the oracle odbc driver exe file from www.oracle.com (ORA10203.exe)
    9. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources and create a new System DN
    This allows excel spreadsheets connecting ONLY to oracle to function.
    Unfortunately some of our spreadsheets connect to both a MySQL database as well as oracle. Spreadsheets connecting only to MySQL also function correctly, however, as soon as the vb associated with a spreadsheet includes a mysql call followed by an oracle call the spreadsheets fail. In Excel 2007 excel crashes completely everytime. In Excel 2010 the mysql data is generated, then when the script hits to oracle odbc connection there is a long pause, the oracle ODBC driver connect pops up requesting a username/password (this didn't happen in xp), then the data source selection pops up, then the username/password connect screen pops up again, and finally it fails with a runtime error '1004' General ODBC error.
    If you look at the VB script it's failing at the Refresh BackgroundQuery statement in the ODBC connection block:
    With Worksheets("Oracle1").QueryTables.Add(Connection:= _
    "ODBC;DSN=Oracle_ODBC;UID=user;PWD=password;SERVER=ORACLE_LINUX;", _
    Destination:=Worksheets("Oracle1").Range("A1"))
    .CommandText = strSql
    .Name = "Oracle1_data"
    .FieldNames = True
    .RowNumbers = False
    .FillAdjacentFormulas = False
    .PreserveFormatting = True
    .RefreshOnFileOpen = False
    .BackgroundQuery = True
    .RefreshStyle = xlOverwriteCells
    .SavePassword = True
    .SaveData = True
    .AdjustColumnWidth = True
    .RefreshPeriod = 0
    .PreserveColumnInfo = True
    .Refresh BackgroundQuery:=False
    End With
    Does anyone know how to get around this? It's very important!!
    Also if you try to edit the oracle ODBC connections in Control Panels -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources, ODBC crashes 95% of the time.
    Advice greatly appreciated!!

    Well, here's what I'd check anyway..
    1) get Process Explorer from http://sysinternals.com
    2) make a mysql connection, get a list of dll's loaded (include the location and version columns in the lower pane output)
    3) close that, then make an ora odbc connection, get a list of dlls.
    4) close that, then make a mysql connection followed by an ora odbc connection, get a list of dlls
    5) compare the lists of loaded dlls. In particular, the difference between #3 and #4, is there a dll dependency that gets loaded by oracle's odbc that comes from a different location when you've opened a mysql connection first?
    May or may not help, but might turn up a difference to help point you in a direction.

  • ODBC Driver update

    Hi
    I'm an Oracle novice, but have been fault-finding with an application at work, built in Powerbuilder, which seems to have issues with the ODBC driver that ships with Oracle 8.1.7
    Basically, some date/time fields in the application are totally incorrect, and I suspect that an update to a newer version of the ODBC driver (newer than the vanilla one that ships with the install CD) will resolve the problem.
    Unfortunately, however, I have absolutely no experience fiddling with Oracle, so I'm stumped as to how to go about this. A bit of research has led me to the Oracle site, where I have managed to download the driver update, (8.1.7.6) and I have ascertained that I need to run the Oracle Universal Installer and edit the tnsnames.ora file.
    This is as far as I've got!
    Help! Please!

    The Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) should be installed on your machine as part of the installation of the Oracle client. On Windows, there should be an Oracle Installation Products option in your Start menu that goes to the OUI. From there, you merely have to point the OUI at the JAR file for the ODBC driver upgrade you downloaded.

  • Upgrading ODBC driver

    Hi,
    We are trying to upgrade our ODBC driver to the latest version using the ora9208.zip file downloaded through
    Metalink (I can't see the version number).
    The problem we are having is...I follow the instructions for copying the unzipped files into specific places on
    the server.
    README PART IV:
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\bin\sqora32.dll file into C:\Oracle\Ora92\bin on the server.
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\bin\sqoras32.dll file into C:\Oracle\Ora92\bin on the server.
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\bin\sqresus.dll file into C:\Oracle\Ora92\bin on the server.
    All this works ok.
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\ODBC\html\ODBCRelnotesUS.htm file into
    C:\Oracle\Ora92\ODBC\html on the server.
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\readme.txt file into C:\Oracle\Ora92\ODBC\html on the server.
    Copy unzipped ORA9208\ODBC\mesg\oraodbus.msb file into C:\Oracle\Ora92\ODBC\mesg on the
    server.
    Cannot copy any of these files to the server as neither the html or the mesg directories exist on the server.
    We fulfilled the prerequisites and upgraded the Oracle client but the same problem persisted.
    What we need to know is how can we upgrade to the latest ODBC driver for HP DL385 running Windows Server 2003 (32bit) without experiencing the above issue.
    If anyone has had this same issue, PLEASE let me know how you got around it
    Thanks,
    user567758

    You should not perform actions manually, you should let the OUI to perform the actions. If you were required to manually copy files, it mean your services were not properly shutdown at install time and Oracle was not able to overwrite existing files. You should retry operation with all oracle related services down. Sometimes there are files (some dll's) required by third parties who maintain the dll's active at install time. You should take note on this before retrying installation.

  • CR Oracle ODBC Driver

    I recently had to reinstall my operating system (Windows XP Pro 32 bit) and applications, which included Crystal Reports. CR was originally setup to access our companies database tables. I also had and ODBC connection setup for CR.
    I'm having trouble finding the right ODBC software to reinstall so that the CR Oracle ODBC Driver 5.0 shows up in the Administrative Tools/Data Sources (ODBC)/ Drivers. The only ODBC driver that shows up is the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle, which won't connect.
    Once I have the CR ODBC Driver, then I just need to configure it in the System DSN, and copy the sqlnet.ora and tsnnames.ora files into C:\oracle\ora92\network\ADMIN, which is where it is located on another computer that can connect.
    Does anybody know which Oracle software would work for the CR driver issue? Is Oracle supposed to be installed prior to CR so the driver shows up?
    It's been several years since this was originallly setup, and not quite sure how to get the CR driver.
    Please help! Thanks for your assistance.

    if u r running the CR in the current user then you can make the ODBC
    in user dsn or System dsn
    you are to select the Microsoft ODBC for ORACLE
    Then at configuration time the Server will be the Service Name which you have entered in the TNSNAMES.ORA File
    eg orcl.
    then user name eg; scott
    then password as scott;
    thne your odbc is created...
    you can work with CR with this odbc
    if your odbc still not working then go for the latest drivers provider for the oracle 10g
    do it
    best of luck..
