Retrieve attribute description to Excel Addin for MDS

I propose a new feature:
retrieve attribute description to Excel Addin for MDS - as
separate row, which would be above attribute-row.
This is especially useful for users - translation into other languages.

Do you think, it would help if we add description as comments of the column name. So user have to hover the mouse to see it?
Also, we already have a work item to support multiple language in the model/entity/attribute name. So based on the client OS, it would show different language for the column name. But I cannot promise when we will deliver it at this moment.

Excel addins and essbase connection

Hi Team,
In EPM 11.1.2.1 can you please let me know how Excel addins users connect to essbase server? Does it uses the default port 1423 to connect to essbase server when we connect to the essbase application from Excel to pull data.

In a default installation, the Add-In initially contacts the Essbase agent on 1423, and is then connected to the individual Essbase application using ports in the range 32768 to 33768.
See also AGENTPORT, SERVERPORTBEGIN and SERVERPORTEND in the Technical Reference. If non-default values have been configured you will see these parameters in the Essbase.cfg file for your installation.

Where do I start writing Office (Word & Excel) Addins using VS 2013 Community?

First, I hope that I have selected the appropriate location for this message. If not I apologize. I am hoping that posting to the VSTO community will also cover the Word and Excel development groups.
Second, a word of explanation: I am partially handicapped (unable to use my left hand easily), and 73 years of age and retired, and due to medical prescriptions unable to respond as quickly as I might desire.
Consequently I may be tardy in responding to any messages sent to me.
SUBJECT: I currently have Office 2007 (and as a limited income retiree - find it impossible to upgrade to a newer version of Office) and would like to prepare/write some add-ins of the macros (VBA for both
Word and Excel) that I have used and developed over the years. When I retired I lost the opportunity to use advanced versions of Visual Studio and have been limited to the "Express" versions of Visual Studio. With the recent release of Visual
Studio 2013 Community there appears to be the possibility that I might be able to convert my macros and such to an add-in. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue where or even how to start.
I very much would appreciate any information, directions, suggestions, and ideas which might help me find a way to get started in providing an add-in which would span the various versions of Word and Excel between 2007 and the current version. (I am currently
running Windows 8.1 but must admit I am not terribly impressed.)
I might note that my primary language for programming has been VB (as in VBA). I am not opposed to learning C# but rewriting everything would be a bit more inefficient than I would like to tackle at this point in time.
If there is some generous soul who would be kind enough to point me toward articles, samples/examples, and ideas on how I might be able to create these add-ins of my macros and such I would be deeply appreciative.
NOTE: I realized only after making the original post that I forgot to ask whether I need to obtain a copy of VSTO or whether the capabilities of VSTO had been incorporated into Visual Studio 2013 Community.

Out of the box the Community edition of VS doesn't include VSTO templates. You have to install
http://aka.ms/OfficeDevToolsForVS2013 to get them appear. In general, the Community edition corresponds to the Professional one (paid one). So, you can start developing add-ins in VB.NET. See

Excel 2010 for version 11.1.1.3

Hi gurus,I'm working on Hyperion v 11.1.1.3, i want to use excel 2010 as a client for this version.I want to know that is excel 2010 compatible for V11.1.1.3?
1)If not then how to upgrade to excel 2010 for this version and what all precautions/procedures needs to be followed during up-gradation to avoid the issues if any?
2)what excel version that Oracle recommends for v11.1.1.3 and the patches to apply if want to upgrade?
3)How do we find the add-in/smart-view client version on the essbase server(path to folder/directory on the sever)?
4)Is it possible to apply the patch-if we want to upgrade from excel old version to higher version, on user machine instead of applying the patch on server itself?

Installing 32 bit Office 2013 when 64 bit Office 2003 is already on my computer

I need to install Office Home and Business 2013 in 32 bit, and I already have Office 2003 64 bit on my computer. It sounds like it will automatically install 64 bit if that is what is what already on there. What is the best way to get Outlook,
Excel and Word to update in 32 bit? Is it possible to keep the programs from Office 2003 that aren't duplicated on Office Home and Business 2013 and still install Outlook, Excel and Word from Office 2013 in 32 bit?

It seems that you have misunderstood it. Microsoft Office 2010 marks the first time Office will be shipping in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, not Office 2003.
What is the version of your Office 2003? If you want to use Outlook 2013, Excel 2013 and Word 2013, and retain the other the Office 2003 suits at the same pc. If it is, we can install both Office 2013 and Office2003, then remove individual components in
Office 2003.
Double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon in the Windows Control Panel. Click Microsoft Office 2003 in the Currently installed programs box, and then click the Change button.

How to Increase Retrival time using excel addin

I have a ASO cube what thing can i do ti increase retrival time to excel addin on version 9.3.1
Please advise

1. Edit the essbase.cfg file with the following:

2. Edit the database properties with the following:
If on 32-bit Platform, set the Essbase Data retrieval buffers as:
Buffer size(KB): 10
Sort buffer size(KB): 40
If on 64-bit Platform, set the Essbase Data retrieval buffers as:
Buffer size(KB): 20
Sort buffer size(KB): 40
3. Add or Edit the following Registry settings on Essbase Server and Client machines
a) Open the Registry
b) Navigate to LocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
c) Add new DWORD Value named TcpTimedWaitDelay, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 30. (The default value of this parameter is 2 minutes. This is how long twill take for a TCP/IP port that was used by the network for a connection to be released and made available again. 30 sec is the minimum allowed by Microsoft)
d) Add new DWORD Value named MaxUserPort, right click and select Modify. Select decimal radio button, type in 65534. ( The default value is 5000. This determines the highest port number TCP can assign when an application requests an available user port from the system.
e) Add new DWORD Value named MaxFreeTcbs, right click and selectModify. Select decimal radio button, type in 6250. (The default value is 2000. This determines the number of TCP control blocks(TCBs) the system creates to support active connections. Because each connection requires a control block, this value determines how many active connections TCP can support simultaneously. If all control blocks are used and more connection requests arrive,TCP can prematurely release connections in the TIME_WAIT state inorder to free a control block for a new connection and also increase the netdelay and netretrycount.

Acrobat 9 and 10 on the same computer with Office 2003

I am using windows xp. I currently have acrobat 9.x pro installed and PDFMaker is installed in my Office 2003 application...works great. I am considering upgrading from CS4 to CS 5.5 which includes Acrobat 10. I would like to know if I can install Acrobat 10 on the same machine as 9 and if so, will PDFMaker be available for each version in the Office 2003.

Having 2 versions of Acrobat together is possible (though not recommended), but you will have only one PDFMaker in Office 2003 - ie. from latest version of Acrobat. Office 2003 ACL Corruption

Whenever a windows user re-saves their Word or Excel document from Office 2003 or 2008 on our 10.5.4 server(not saving locally but directly on the server), it corrupts the ACL Permissions. It makes 4 copies of the current ACL Users/Groups and adds Everyone and Users Groups as an Allow. I think it takes that from my POSIX's setup. Also it turns my POSIXS group from a read to a none on that file. It only seems to happen on our Office docs, CS3 docs seem to be fine.
I've scoured the boards and have not found much on this particular issue, wondering if anyone else has come accross this...

I have exactly this issue. I have had a case open with Apple Pro support for several months now. I have done LOTS of tests to try and track down the cause of this problem.
I have concluded that ACLs on the server are working correctly. The reason I can say that is the ONLY applications we have problems with are MS Office (2003) on Windows. Apple have since confirmed to me that the problem exists on MS Office 2003 and 2007 for Windows saving to Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.4.
The problem doesn't really show up unless you are sharing documents with other people as the permissions get re-written in such a way that different systems appear to interpret them differently. For example you can save a document on MS Office 2008 for Mac and all the permissions are correct and can be opened and save on any other MS Office without problems. Once you save it on MS Office on Windows the permissions get messed up and you will not be able to re-save the document on a Mac. Opening on a Mac works just read-only. Sometimes the ACLs appear to get screwed up enough that on Windows they appear read-only to anyone except the last person to modify it.
I know it's not the answer for everyone but we have switched to OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org is virtually identical in all the areas that matter to our users here and can open and save MS Office compatible files. OpenOffice.org preserves the permissions exactly as they should be.
Apple did say it was something they really want to get fixed but couldn't give me a timeframe. I guess they need Microsoft's Office team to sort it out. Seeing as there isn't any KB article on Microsoft to even acknowledge the problem I guess it may be a while.

Essbase Excel Addin on 64 Bit Windows 7 and 64 bit Office 2010

Hi Everyone,
I have installed 11.1.2.2 on server with Essbase and Shared Services.
Now, on the client I have 64 bit Windows 7 and 64 bit office 2010.
I tried installing Excel Addin client only (without Essbase client) and restarted machine after install.
After install Addin didnt come up automatically and i tried to manually set the add-in, I'm getting an error "This is not a valid add-in"
Is it because i am using 64 bit of office and have to go back to 32 bit.
Isnt 64 bit supported for latest 11.1.2.2 Essbase ?
Any ideas or experience in this regard will be helpful to me as our company is going for Windows 7 and Office 2010 across the business users and if 64 bit Office is not supported or has issues i would have to suggest them to go with 32 bit Office 2010.

Office 2003 - Client Version 7.1.5

Hi, We are using both Essbase and TM1, during installation each piece of software knocks the other out of the.. "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options\OPEN" registry key. It is possible to work around with a VB Script which adds the following back into the registry.. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options] OPEN="/R \"C:\\Hyperion\\essbase\\BIN\\ESSEXCLN.XLL\"" OPEN1="/R \"C:\\Hyperion\\essbase\\BIN\\ESSXLEQD.XLA\"" OPEN2="\"C:\\Program Files\\Applix\\bin\\tm1p.xla\"" However, my question is whether or not a user can actually repair this themselves using the usual Excel, Tools, Add-ins, Search function to find the add-in file again. When they do this using Office 2003, ESSEXCLN.XLL is not valid because it does not have a .XLA file extension. Anybody know of a 'user' workaround, we have policy implications for sending .VBS files around the network. Thanks, Dave 

I have read somewhere (here or network54) that if a prior version of office was installed (and Office2k3 is an upgrade), that the install works. What prior version of Office (97 or 2k), I don't know. (Thinking out loud here..) The the add-in installer must be looking for a reg key to confirm that Excel has been installed, so you might be able to use a registry inspector utility to determine what keys the installer is reading, then add the reg entry(s) as as a prerequisite of the add-in install. As a side note, I don't know that Excel2k3 is officially supported, so be careful. It may be 99% compatible, but if the one item that isn't compatible turns out to be a major issue with youer apps, and you just deployed XL2k3 to a lot of users, it could be a big headache.

My installation of Acrobat Pro extended works printing all types of Microsoft Office 2003 documents (Word, Excel, Pagemaker, etc) but NOT with Powerpoint and I'm trying to get more information other than what I'm seeing in Powerpoint when I try to create the PDF which is "an error occurred while trying to print the Adobe PDF"
