Office 2007 + Custom template (dot/dotm files) on terminal server -- issues

We are trying to transition to a terminal server + thin-client setup.
The TS runs Server 2008 R2, and the Office version is 2007 (for compatibility reasons -- we have a lot of macros etc that won't run with Office 2010).
The normal.dotm for Office, Excel & Word are customised in order to insert custom macros, font styling etc. A batch file runs on logon, copying the custom normal.dotm files from a network share to the local computer's C: drive in a folder called "Templates".
So it'd copy the data from "\\SERVER1\share\normal.dotm" to "C:\templates\" on the machine.
Then, a GPO would re-direct the location for the normal.dotm file from the default location to the new location (i.e. C:\Templates\) from above. This allowed updating of custom macros etc to all computers on the net. It was messy, but it worked.
Now that we're wanting to transition to terminal server, we're having an issue where the script still works, however when closing Outlook / Excel / Word, users are receiving a message stating "The file normal.dotm is in use".
I'm guessing what's happening is, the first person to log on to the Terminal Server and launch their instance of Outlook/Word/Excel is getting an exclusive handle to this file; And subsequently launched instances get this error.
There is nothing _wrong_ with the system per se -- everything works, however every time an Office app is closed, the user gets the annoying message.
What is the correct solution to this? Is there a cleaner way to deploy macros/styling settings rather than modifying normal.dotm? Another solution I can think of is to create a copy of the templates/normal.dotm for every single user in their %AppData% folder
and tell Office to use the %AppData% copy -- but this would mean as many copies of the templates as there are users which doesn't seem like a very clean solution.
I'm open to suggestions and insights on the cleanest and most efficient way to solve this problem.

Hi
update to this issue from my side:
We opened a Support call for this issue and got it solved.
The SQL script to recreate a fresh Enterprise Global (eglobal.SQL) does not exist for Project Server 2013 currently. But the support created one for us. So if someone has this issue, contact Microsoft Support, they will provide you the script.
Kind regards

  • Windows 7 + Office 2007 & 2010 VERY slow saving files to on 2008 R2 files shares

OK I have litterally tried everthing in every forum there is to resolve this. It is only happening on our Win 7 workstations that are running Office 2007 or 2010.  Our file shares are on a 2008 R2 server. Opening and saving files on the shares using
Office is very slow. I have tried updates and server and workstations are 100% up to date. The server is only running as a file share server. Nothing else on it. We have completely set up new PC's to test with clean Win 7 installs and nothing else except Office.
Nothing else on the network is slow at all. I have tried all the hotfixes in the world that could relate to this from many hours of research into possible causes. I have done the EnableShellDataCaching fix, the SMB 2 disable fix, the windows search/indexer
fix, the pdfmaker fix, the lookup wizard add-in fix, the go to the newest firmware on the cisco switch fix, update workstation nic driver fix, the Trusted Locations in Excel fix, and about a dozen other fixes. NOTHING WORKS! This has brought our Win 7
and Office 2007/2010 users to a halt in their ability to do their jobs. Our company is suffering badly. And did I mention that our IT dept is getting a lot of heat and criticism about it. FYI we are running an IBM E5450 with dual multi-thread
multi-core(8) 3 Mhz Intel Xeon processors with 2008 R2 64-bit, 12 GB ram, and the server is using litterally no resources. Network connected is Gigabit. This has to be a Microsoft issue with 2008/Win 7/Office 2007&2010. This has become a nightmare for
out IT dept and has consumed weeks of our time when we need to be working on other projects. Can anyone solve this. Microsoft: Please release a REAL fix for this that we can run on the server or push via GPO to the workstations.

    Hi,
Take a look at this and see if it helps:

Office 2010 components, such as Word 2010?
At this time, I suggest trying to start Excel in safe mode. Then, open the Excel file or create a new Excel file, and save the file to the network again.
Start the Excel program in safe mode
    1.       Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Microsoft Office.
    2.        Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the Microsoft Excel.
If the problem does not occur in the safe mode, this issue might be related to some third-party add-ins in the Excel program, we can try to disable them. Normally, you could do the following to disable the conflict add-ins in your Excel program:
    Disable add-ins
Click File menu, click Options >  Add-in, click Go button in the Manage: Com-in Add.
Check if there are any add-ins, clear the checkbox to disable them.
Close the Office program and restart it.
Add one check back each time to the list of Add-In, restart the Office program, and repeat the above procedure. Once the issue reappears again, we can determine which add-in causes this problem and then disable it.
Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience.  If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Is the performance also slow when you trying to save the Excel file to other network path?
At this time, we can also try to test this issue in the clean boot mode.
    Test in Clean boot Mode
    ===============
Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
    1.       Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
    2.        Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3.       Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This should not affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.
    What’s the result now?
How to return from the Clean Boot state
After the troubleshooting, we can return from the clean boot state:
    1.       Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window.
    2.       On the "General" tab, click "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services".
    3.       Click OK. Click Restart when you are prompted to restart your computer.

  • Handwriting in Office 2007 wont convert to pdf file, Acrobat Pro 9

Im using Acrobat pro 9 and Office 2007.
I have a word 2007 file with handwriting in it, when I right click on the file and select "convert to pdf", it convert the file without the handwritting.
The strange thing is that in word 2007, if I choose to print the document with the adobe pdf printer, the pdf created that way keeps the handwriting.
Why does the right click option to convert the file drops the handwriting???
Other strange thing, when I was using Office 2003 the problem wasn't there.

Using pdfmaker 9 in office 2007 uses a different method to create a pdf. Older versions would use a print route (Like printing to the adobe pdf printer but including extra features)
Can you post a sample Word file using your favourite file hosting service, or acrobat.com?

    Hi Bob9876,
I would strongly recommend that you go down the Microsoft APPV path, I tried using Zenworks for this particular task and it failed - I was not able to get any meaningful support from Novell to resolve this issue.
You should really consider APPV its an exception product.

  • Unable to Copy File From Terminal Server to Client Share

    Hi
For years client have been able to copy files from our Windows 2003 Terminal Server to their local workstation using:
    copy myfile \\tsclient\mydrive\myfolder
However we upgraded to Windows 2012 Server R2 and now Windows 7 Pro clients cannot copy files.  The copy function creates the file name in their local folder but no content is sent after maybe 20 minutes or so the copy function times out and they get an
error message saying that the application was unable to write to the file.  I have tried this function with my Windows 8.1 workstation and the file copies properly and it works fine for older Windows XP clients.  Does anyone know why Windows 7 clients
    are experiencing this issue.
    Thanks
    Simon

    Hi Simon,
Initially please use latest RDP version 8.1 for windows 7 and check result.
What’s the file size which you are copying?
Does this happens for all users and on all computers?
You can try below method might resolve your case.
    1. Login to remote computer using Remote Desktop (RDP).
    2. Open Task Manager in the remote machine
    3. Click the "Process" tab
    4. Locate a program called "rdpclip.exe"
    5. Right click and select "End process" to kill this program
    6. Click on "File" menu in the task manager and select "New Task (Run)"
    7. Type rdpclip.exe and press the button to start the process.
By killing existing instance of the rdpclip.exe and restarting the program, you can get your copy paste work again in your remote desktop.
    Hope it helps!

  • Getting remote file using FTP Server Issue in OSB

    Hi Guys,
I have configured a FTP server on my local system and I created a proxy service to get file from ftp location to some other location but it fails . I used ftp protocol for getting file
and my ftp location is D:\host\ftp and it has another folder called osb . I used ftp as protocol and EndPointURI is ftp://localhost/. It fails to get files and shows error message like
com.bea.wli.sb.transports.TransportException: <user:osb>Unable to list files for
    directory: .
    at com.bea.wli.sb.transports.ftp.connector.FTPWorkPartitioningAgent.exec
    ute(FTPWorkPartitioningAgent.java:218)
In case of Business Service, writing a file to ftp location (i.e ftp://localhost/ means D:\host\ftp\osb) working.
I used service account for both proxy,BS to connect . osb is username and same as password.
Can Any one please suggest me How to solve this issue?
    Thanks,

  • Having problems with OPA 10 and office 2007 templates

    Hi,
I have a OPA 10 and office 2007 set up which is having some issues with the macros. Seems to me that the visual basic code is not kicking off really well sometimes. I am trying to map the sequence which leads to the errors and I believe that the issue is around opening an old word doc which has a old template version (.dot). This may be the cause for OPA getting lost when working with word 2007.
For example, I ask to open a rules doc and the visual basic tells me that OPA couldn't open the doc but word is opening the doc anyway. However none of the toolbar commands work as well as I can 't save the doc etc.
Have you experienced any issue with OPA 10 and Office 2007? Any special word configuration? Should i go back to office 2003?
BTW, I have both dotm and dot templates loaded as add-ins in word. The dotm toolbar looks good but the dot toolbar is a bit strange in 2007.
    Cheers,
    Paulo

    Hi Paulo,
Have a look at the following tips from Davin Fifield about troubleshooting the toolbar.
Sometimes when using Oracle Policy Modeling, Microsoft Word documents that are part of a Policy Modeling project may appear without the OPA toolbar (in Office 2003) or OPA options on the Add-Ins ribbon (in Office 2007) when opened in Microsoft Word.
This problem can be caused by various factors.
Here are the top three troubleshooting steps to try to recover from this situation.
    1. With your project open in Oracle Policy Modeling, run Update Oracle Policy Templates from the Tools menu. This will attempt to make sure the correct Word template is attached to each project Word document that is not currently excluded from the build. Open a Word document to see if the toolbar/ribbon is now displayed correctly. If not, continue to step 2.
    2. Try changing the UI language for your project. To do this, choose Options, from the Tools menu in Oracle Policy Modeling. Select Environment. Selet General. Under Authoring UI Language, choose a language other than your preferred UI language, and click OK. Then repeat these steps to revert to your preferred language. Open a Word document to see if the toolbar/ribbon is now displayed correctly. If not, continue to step 3.
    3. Open one of the Word documents in your Policy Modeling project. Run the macro UpdateToolbar: In Word 2007, choose the View ribbon, then select Macros/View Macros, highlight the UpdateToolbar macro, then choose Run.
    Does this resolve your issue?

  • Deploy custom templates in Office 2013

     Hi All,
We have been using the backstage view of Office 2010 to deploy custom templates, as described in the TechNet article
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178976(v=office.14).aspx
We recently upgraded to Office 2013 and have not been successful in getting our templates to show up in the backstage view.  We have tried creating the spotlight registry keys under
the \Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Spotlight but this was also unsuccessful.
Has anyone been able to deploy custom templates using the 2007/10 spotlight approach outlined in that TechNet article?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Thank you Max,
Can you please specify how the permissions should be set to allow Word 2013 to access SP 2013 via the XML file? Is it enough to simply be logged into SharePoint with Contribute rights to the library or is there more that needs to be done?
    Hi Katie,
I believe Contribute permissions are enough for this case.
Have a look at the following solution, see if it works for your situation:
    http://zasharepoint.blogspot.com/2014/04/sorry-we-couldnt-find-your-file-is-it.html
More hints to troubleshoot this issue:
Have you tested this issue on another machine?
    Is proxy used?
Does the SharePoint environment has complex permission settings (e.g. the inheriting permissions are broken, or cross domain environment, etc.)?

  • Adding user created templates into Office 2007/2010 using Group Policy

I am trying to show some of our templates that we have created for work within Microsoft Office (work and excel) but I want them to show for everyone and not just 1 or 2 people. Being in a company that employ's 200+ people in multiple locations, the
task to manually go around to each and every machine to point to a different set of templates seems very time consuming. I am wondering if there is a gpo and/or registry edit that can be used. Anybody's assistance is greatly appreciated!
We have a mixture of Office 2007/2010. Server is a Win 2008 r2 standard.

    Hi,
You can create and deploy custom templates using the steps below:
    1. Create your templates.
    2. Create thumbnail and preview files.
    3. Create an XML configuration file that describes the custom template, thumbnail, and preview files.
    4. Deploy a registry key that enables Office to read the XML configuration file.
For more information, please refer to the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178976(v=office.14).aspx
In addition, a simple way to achieve the goal is setting the file location for "Workgroup templates" and save the custom templates to the shared location,
then users can select the templates via File > New > My Templates. To change the location, you can modify the
    SharedTemplates key under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\xx.0\Common\General].
    Hope this helps.

  • Custom Word 2010 Normal.dotm file not applying

I have replaced the Normal.dotm file with a file with out letterhead information on it. On some computers its not applying though. I saved the letterhead file as Normal.dotm and have replaced the Normal.dotm file on their computer but when they open Word
it still opens a blank document. If I replace it on my computer it loads the letterhead file and the same with other users. Its just a select few that ignore the new Normal.dotm file.
I can prove that the file has the letterhead text by renaming the file on their computer and then opening it. When I do this it opens with the letterhead text.
Free computer help and tips http://www.onlinecomputertips.com

A part of the problem you are seeing is that Word creates its own normal.dotm file when it can't find one where it is supposed to look.
Here is a link to the Microsoft take on sharing the normal template.
You Cannot Share the Normal.dot[m] File Among Multiple Users This is an older article but nothing it says has changed. That is how Word works. When I first was setting up a
LAN using Word, I tried sharing the normal template as well. It is intuitive to do so; but it does not work. The more users you have the more problems it can cause. It is likely that you have had problems with sharing normal.dotm but not recognized that the
    problems were caused by that.
The normal template is intended to be a personal workspace/resource and should not be overwritten from a main source. It should be stored in the user templates folder (which also should not be a shared folder). You certainly can create a customized normal.dotm
template and distribute it as a starting point but there is little reason to do so.
Overwriting someone else's normal.dotm template is a bit like opening the drawers in their desk and rearranging them, tossing out items if you don't know their purpose. I learned long ago to not be going through my secretary's drawers!
If you want to standardize your documents you can do that with a combination of
    Workgroup Templates and
Global Templates. Global templates will let you share custom building blocks, macros, ribbon and QAT modifications. You can even use them to share styles although usually that is better
    done through document templates.
It is quite possible to have a different template than the normal template be the basis for the blank document you see when you start Word or for when you use Ctrl+N. There are examples of this on my downloads page.

  • Full file path in Office 2007 when open or save

Am not sure i can raise this question here.
We are using 10gR2 Application server and Windows 7 as a Client. In the client machine we have installed the Microsoft Office 2007.
From the forms we are trying to open and save (after changes) the files of format Doc/Xls. These files will be stored in separate shared folder accessible through Application server and client.
Now the issue is when we open/save the file it shows the Entire path (In Saving Window) which should not happen. In previous release of MS office its not like this.
Please help us "to hide the file path to be displayed to the user". Like changing the registry for Office 2007 or workarounds or new solutions or any other oracle's product.
Note : Showing the file name is the Office 2007s default behavior.

The only way to avoid showing this from a Forms point of view would be to not display the open/save file dialog in the first place. In other words, control the opening and saving using your own custom dialogs. Also, be aware that using remote drives (network mapped) may cause problems. Generally speaking, doing this would not be considered supported.
As for opening documents on the client, there is no need to use the open file dialog if you know the file name and path to that file in advance. You can simply use WebUtil's CLIENT_HOST. So let's say you wanted to open a file named mySales.doc and you knew its location, all you would need to do is this:
    Declare
         my_cmd varchar2(255);
    Begin
         my_cmd := 'rundll32 shell32,ShellExec_RunDLL '|| :t1;
         CLIENT_HOST(my_cmd);
End;In the above example, +:t1+ is a text field on a canvas. The value would include the path and file name to be opened. Of course this could be a pl/sql variable which you programatically populate or any combination of that. The value value must include the full path (with drive letter) and full file name. If the path or name contains spaces, double quotes may likely be necessary. You will have to test.
For saving an opened file, you are mostly out of luck from Forms unless you took control of Word/Excel as it was being opened in the first place. For example you likely can open the Office products using OLE or VB or other macro and control what the open and file save dialogs look like or if they are even accessible at all. But this has nothing to do with Oracle or specifically Forms.
You need to refer to the MS documentation.
