Offline Vs detach
So I wanted to move the mdf and ldf for a specfic database to a new file location.
I detached the database and then tried to copy the mdf to the new location.
Access denied.
I am domain admin, SA and had run windows explorer "as administrator" while RDP'd to the sql server instance.
I then reattched the DB (keeping the original path info obviously) and then took the DB offline and then detached.
This time I was able to move the mdf to the new file location without permission issues. I then reattched the DB using the new file location.
So my question is, if detaching a database removes its registration with SQL Server, why was I not able to move the MDF?
What difference did taking it offline before the detach/attach make in this regard?

As per what you say you were able to detach database but access denied message came while copying it ?
Detaching a database removes it from the instance of SQL Server but leaves the database intact within its data files and transaction log files. These files can then be used to attach the database to any instance of SQL Server, including the server from which
the database was detached.

My Residential server is used as a file and web server, however i also use it for learning so it has grown slow over the last couple of years, i now need to get it working ready for when i go to UNI. I have upgraded from windows server 2012 Standard to windows
server 2012r2 standard, i am on the same server, but have put a SSD as my primary drive(so i still have the old hard drive and can go back to that to get my data)
I have also done a BIOS update, so the logical disks (a 2TB RAID 1 with all my important documents) are not showing up on the RAID Configuration in the BIOS.
By changing settings i have managed to get the array to show up on server manager > File and storage services>Volumes>Storage Pools. however there are a number of exclamation marks shown next to the drive(s)
I read in a Technet
Article that i should "set
the storage pool to read-write "
I did this and then in the storage pool box at the top the exclamation mark says "Warning: Degraded".
In the Virtual Disks box (bottom left) the exclamation mark says "Unknown: Detached" and in the Physical Disks box (bottom right) it says "Warning Split" on the second disk.
I have disconnected all other Hard drives, however if i can't get my documents back will have to go back to windows server 2012. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Michael BoothHi,
It seems that the second disk is failed, you need to add a new disk to the storage pool to replace the failed disk.

rebooting...Why would you need to swap the drives? Couldn't you just boot from the mirror directly? If the primary disk isn't available, it should just mark that side down.
This is very different from removing a disk from the pool and then trying to use it.

Solaris 10u6 fails to boot after installation on HP Proliant DL380 G4
Hello,
I have used Solaris 10u5 without issues on the HP DL380 G4. However, when I tried to install update 6 (new installation), it fails to reboot. I starts to boot, then aborts and reboots the system. I added the arguments -av to help get more information. Here's what I was able to capture:

I have tried this on two identical machines with the same results. Some other details:
- Booting into failsafe mode works; the system finds and mounts the zfs volumes
- I did a network installation. I rebuilt the miniroot to include the CPQary3 package
- I tried installing with a zpool with two disks as well as only one disk; the result was the same
- I also tried installing without using a ZFS root disk; it also fails
I have googled for this problem but have not found anything like it. I would greatly appreciate any help!
Thanks,
MichaelI finally figured it out. For some reason, the installer does not install the driver package (CPQary3) or include it in the boot archive. The driver is in the fail-safe miniroot, however. So, I booted into fail-safe mode and installed the driver, and now everything works!
I ran into two problems with the installer on this hardware. I'll post details and work-arounds for both in a separate message. -
The transaction log for database 'SharePoint_Config' is full
Hi all ,
I am very new to sharepoint. when i tried to remove a wsp file from central administration i got the message like
The transaction log for database 'SharePoint_Config' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot
be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases.
Can anybody help me to solve this please. I saw one solution in net like this but i don't know how to do this. Can anybody help me how to do these steps please.
1.
Take the configuration database offline and detach it
2.
Copy the current MDF to a new location (to be used as a way of recovering the database if needed)
3.
Put the database back on-line, reattach it and then put it within simple mode (from full), with an aim of this stopping the database from
increasing in size
4.
Shrink the database and recover log space
5.
Should the shrinking fail, we'd look at detaching the database, making a sideways copy of the log file to another database
6.
We would then reattach the database, which should generate a new log file
Thank youHi Soumya,
I don't have any dba resource. And it is not a lab environment. It's Corporate environment.
Thanks alot for ur quick reply.
I normally don't just come onto the threads and tell people that they need a consultant, but you might want to look at getting a consultant to help make sure that your SharePoint environment is health and can be restored in the event of a server failure.
Based on the problem that you have described it might not be recoverable, or at least it might not be as recoverable as you want it to be.
At the very least you'll want to watch this video of my session at TechEd 2014 which talks about backups and how to set them up.

Dispatcher not starting, inconsistencies with database.
Hi guys,
In my coy a member of staff shutdown the SAP Server abnormally causing inconsistencies in the database. The SAP system runs on an MSSQL database.
The next morning the dispatcher was not starting and i checked the database. Apparently, i could not login to the database so i changed the default database to master. I could login alright so i tried running the ALTER LOGIN.... which did not run.
Drilling down i found out that the database was marked "SUSPECT" so i tried to take it offline and detach it. I got the error "attempt to retrieve data for object failed for server".
I would appreciate your prompt response on this.

Can't login twice concurrently
Hi all
I have a problem , a user is showing as logged in on the system but all the users are offline.
I tried taking database offline and detaching it , still it doessn't work.
I went to check under licenses and the user was grayed out but there was no one using the system.
How can i fix this?
ThanksDear Mr Dlamini,
Another option could be killing the process in the sql server. Go to the sql analyzer, to MANAGEMENT and to activity Monitor. There double click on Acitivity monitor and the list of the logged users appears. right click on the user that is not logged and select kill process.
Kind Regards,

Hi, Read some other posts, but couldn't get it to work. Thanks in advance, Here is the error notice:
Make sure to run SSMS as Admin if you're using SQL Server 2012.
It is indeed the known issue and running SSMS as Admin should solve it.
BTW, this solution I found in www.universalthread.com forum. I re-checked these threads if they contain any supporting links, but no. In any case, that solution helped that person and myself as well.

Tran log backup fail after setting a DB offline
This is strange. SQL 2005 SP3 (build 4340). Full backup job and tran log backup job are separate maint plans/Agent jobs as opposed to multiple steps in one maint plan (don't ask me... I didn't set it up that way.)
I set a database XYZ offline last night at around 9pm. It was last backed up at 8pm (full recovery mode). My tran log backup started failing then. This morning, I detached the database. Tran log backup job still failing.
I finally realized it had something to do with database XYZ so I re-attached it. Tran log backup working now. The weird thing is that XYZ had not been selected only specific databases, and the detached database isn't selected. I
tried setting to simple recovery mode and doing a final full backup before detaching, but tran log job still fails. How can I get rid of database XYZ without the tran job failing? Thanks.I have encountered this problem. I concur with EA. But you would need to modify the maintenance plan and save it (uncheck and check a database again) to rectify the problem (if you just open the maintenance plan and save it, it will still fail)

How to save downloaded files from safari for offline use?
Need help how to save downloaded PDF or images from Safari for offline use. On Mac or PC, we "save as" the files. How do you do it on safari on iPhone?
You can't detach email attachments as separate files, though you can view supported formats as attachments. If you're viewing webmail with Safari, the attachments aren't saved on the iPhone.
Apple hasn't made any announcements about new feature for the iPhone and rarely does. The other iPhone users in this user-to-user forum have no access to unannounced Apple plans, and speculation about them is prohibited by the forum Terms of Use.

IEEE 1934 devices report as being Offline in Capture Mode
I recently found the need to capture video. I had an OHCI compliant IEEE 1934 card professionally installed. Windows recognizes the card and reports it as working properly. When I connect a Firewire device, windows recognizes a device had been attached and detached when I disconnect which indicates the cables and connections are fine.
I have three Firewire devices, two of which are on the Device Setup list located in the Capture Preferences of Premiere 2.0. They include:
JVC HR-DVS2U
Panasonic AG DVX-100
My third device is a Cannon ZR45 MC and while I understand only the ZR40 and ZR50 are listed, I figure the functionality would be so similar, that the ZR45 would have at best limited support within Premiere.
All devices report as being Offline. I’ve read the manual and went through each step more than 4 times with each device and the conclusion is the same. Might there be a step within Windows that I need to perform first?
Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4Ghz
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2
3 GB RAM
Premiere 2.xI would like to thank everyone for taking the time to help answer and troubleshoot my problem.
When researching the web for answers, to include Microsoft’s web site, I discovered many people had the same issues, but for different reasons. Most seemed to stem from service pack or updates received in Vista. Some derived after upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro. I kind of thought this was my issue since all my IEEE devices work with XP home on a very old Sony laptop, but not XP Pro on a rather capable workstation. In the literally hundreds of pages, posts and articles I read through, none of them helped me and according to most who have posted trouble with devices unseen by Windows or offline by any number of different editing aps, there were no fixes. My solution came quite by accident.
I don’t know if this is typical for all OHCI compliant cards not installed by a computer manufacturer, but the one I have comes with a utility called The Switch. It enables one to use either it’s built in drivers that are used by default, or Windows drivers. When I used The Switch, the Installation Wizard auto detected the Canon, and began installing about 7 drivers at the end of which, Premiere saw and manipulated the cam. I tried the same thing for the JVC. All but one driver (T.V. Tuner) was installed, however Premiere still recognized and controlled the deck. Due to time restraints, I only tried playback, shuttle, pause and stop, but there should be no reason capture won’t work.
I hope this helps others who are experiencing device offline issues. I urge you to post your solutions even if they are different from mine. -
Detach Database: physical file permission
Hi All. I am using windows account to login which is Sysadmin of the SQL server.
when I detach a database, the physical file permission will only have one entry, which is my domain ID with full control.
it using another windows domain account which is also sysadmin would like to attach the database again: FAILED since access denied....
how to avoid this happenn ??When you detach a DB, the ACLS are reset and the permission is given to the logged in windows account user - the full control on the DB files as expounded here:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189128.aspx/html. You can circumvent your problem by using "EXECUTE AS Domain\[Attaching User]" before detaching the DB using sp_detach_db
(this will retain full CONTROL permission to the attaching user)
However, starting from SQL 2005, you can use a more graceful method of moving files (on the same server) rather than using the attach/detach as shown below:
Take the DB offline
Move the physical files to the new location
Run the “ALTER DATABASE DBNAME MODIFY FILE (NAME = logicalfilename, FILENAME = physicalfilepath” command to provide the new path
Bring the DB online
However, if you are moving the DB to another server, then backup/restore will be best (you can use compression (SQL 2008 R2 standard edition or higher supports it) and this will move much faster than uncompressed MDF and LDF files

Offline synchronisation design issues
Hi all,
I want to develop an application with JDO and MS SQL server which supports
offline synchronisation (briefcase model). Users should be able to choose if
they want to work locally, storing the data for instance using the MSDE.
When they reconnect to the central sql server, data should be synchronised
(possibly informing the user that some data cannot by synchronised if
someone else modified the data at a later time) For this application it will
be feasible, because most of the data wont be used / modified concurrently.
I wonder if someone has experience / suggestions on the design /
implementation issues for this type of application. For instance should I
arrange things at the level of the domain classes, or should I use sql
server to synchronize data and letting persistence manager either connect to
SQL server or the local MSDE?
suggestions much appreciated,
ChristiaanThanks Marc,
It would be interesting indeed to know how other developers have dealt with
this, so I hope I get some more reactions on this thread!

Christiaan-
We are considering implementing this as a feature in Kodo for an
upcoming release. If you are interested in it, please send a mail to
[email protected] (and reference this newsgroup posting).
In the meantime, you may want to consider using the attach/detach
feature to detach persistent instances from a SQLServer
PersistenceManager, and then re-attach them into some PersistenceManager
using a stand-alone database (like Hypersonic, JDataStore, Pointbase,
etc). This will get you part of the way there, but you will have some
other hurdles to overcome, such as automatic change determination
(possibly by having a "lastModified" timestamp in all your objects), as
well as managing some sort of conflict resolution system for when
multiple changes on the same data cause optimistic locking exceptions.
I know that a number of other Kodo users have been looking into
implementing this sort of this; hopefully they will chime in with their
experiences and insights.

Does anyone know how to detach OneDrive from a Microsoft Live account? I've added Windows 8.1 to my laptop, and log into it with my Windows Live account. I have an existing OneDrive account, also with Windows Live login, with 29GB capacity and about 20-21GB
used.
Once I used Win 8.1, the two seem to have found each other, and made all sorts of assumptions about where the offline files should be, synchronization rules, and so on. There are a couple of old files with too long path-names that prevent synchronization.
I change the names to shorten them, but the old versions keep coming back. I would somehow like to disconnect OneDrive, then reinstall if from scratch so I can set the sync folder and such. I keep trying, but don't find any useful settings at either
the Windows or the Cloud end.
It's like I created a monster but don't have the tools to recapture it. Help !!For the record, my One-Drive problems, and there have been a lot,
were solved by a Windows update yesterday (4/15/2014)Update for Windows 8.1 64-bit (KB 2919355)
Presumably it was released for other platforms also. Make sure you run Windows update.

ASM ORA-27041 'Global Resource Directory partially frozen for dirty detach'
Hi there,
I am running a 10gR2 RAC on two nodes with ASM. Once in three days, the following happens to the ASM instance of one of the nodes. But it's not predictable which node will be next. In other words: Both ASM instances failed so far, but never both at the same time. Least I can say, the cluster always worked. But what the f... happens here? Please have a look at the following alert log extract of the ASM system.

Useless to say that the database based on this ASM instance terminates with complaints about non-readable controlfiles and so on.
It has been no problem to re-start the ASM- and DB-Instance after this happened. So no persistent damage was done, but I find it widely alarming. Has anybody an idea, or can explain, what Oracle does here?
Thanks in advance,
Martin KlierHi,
it seem we have found the solution of this problem, it has been a whole bunch of trouble:
- First of all, the interconnect should never be a crossover cable. Oracle said so in the official RAC FAQ, and they describe as reason why not: "b) Instability. We have seen different problems e.g.. ORA-29740 at configurations using crossover cable, and other errors." I had known, but the errors just appeared weeks after the switchover to crossover cabling.
- The ASM-used devices / raw devices MUST be owned by oracle:oinstall (or :dba depending on the setup), if they are owned by root:disk (with oracle as a memeber of disk) it complains - the ASM instance does exactly the error above.
- Having this fixed, I always got an error ORA-27041 but without "Global Resource Directory partially frozen". The system worked fine, but on every start of ASM the error was logged. Solution: provide an ASM_DISKSTRING parameter, in order to prevent ASM trying to use other (maybe CRS-used) raw devices than its own.
The stuff took away three weeks of my life and a bunch of hair :)
