Often when I send messages the text don't get assoicated to the correct contact in "messages", but to his/her number with a hyphen in it (which doesn't belong there).

Well, the headline says it all. It's not a big problem, but it's annoying enough for me to ask for help here.
For instance I'll text my friend David "Are you up for dinner tonight?", say his number is "370 11 168" (norwegian number). That message get logged in messages under "37-01 11 68", and not under his contact. When David answers, the answer is logged/associated with his contact, and when i answer in the same "thread" the rest of the conversation gets logged under the correct contact. It's functioning smoothly as long as I'm not starting a text-conversation, but almost every text i send when it is not a part of an ongoing thread it gets logged as his number with a random hyphen in it. I've tried searching for an answer, but haven't found anything.
I'll appreciate any help i can get! Thanks

Something doesn't seem right here. If she has to use her email address as her contact address in order to message with you, that suggest to me that she either doesn't meet the requirements to use her iPhone number as the contact address (iOS 6 or later with an iPhone number linked to her Apple ID) or there is an issue with the way the phone number is being entered.

    Hello, Sue.Darby.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend having your friend check to see if call and message blocking is enabled on their end.  Here is some information regarding that feature.

  • I have a iPhone 3GS and my husband has the iPhone 4 , both phones with updated current . We added iMessage to them at first it was great, now I don't get half the texts my husbands send and when I send him a text message it will come up from my email???

I have a iPhone 3GS and my husband has an iPhone 4, both phones are updated. We added iMessage the them both and at first it was great, the messages appear in the text messages under the phone contacts and when I send a text message it will either be a green message  or a blue one for (iMessage) depending on the signal.  Now when my husband sends a text message to me I don't get them all or some days none. When I send him a text message he gets them from my email address. I cannot send him a standard text anymore my phone only wants to iMessage, so if the signal is not right it just sits there undelivered???
I also have a friend who that we regularly texted each other, for the past 4 months I can receive her texts but she never gets mine? And I have tried countless times, now iv given up trying and I don't use texting to either, but everyone else no problem.

You and your husband can share a store account and still have seperate iCloud accounts for your contacts, bookmarks and stuff like that.  Click here for instructions to make an apple account without entering a credit card.  Make sure you use a different email address for each apple account.
Set up your iPhone/iPad whatever using the new account for iCloud.  Then go into settings/store and sign in with your purchasing account, you may need to sign out of the other account.  To the best of my knowledge, your household is allowed to share purchased legally, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Once you each have your own devices set to your own accounts you can set them to backup to that account and it will keep all your contacts seperate.

You need to reconfigure your phone for use with your Apple ID. I suggest you restore yours as new then reconfigure it with your information and Apple ID. Be sure to disable Find My Phone, if it's enabled, before proceeding.

Both devices using the same Apple ID (Settings>Messages>Receive At, same Adress on both devices). I tought iMessages are always received on bothe devices, like the advertisment says i should be able to start a iMessage conversation on ipad and finish it on iphone because both devices receive my iMessages... Thats not like it is on my devices, most times iMessages are only received from the iphone.

Add another e-mail account to your messages, so people could reach you on that e-mail from messages. As soon as you are online (if you have wifi only iPad) you are able to send and receive messages. i.e. your son can send you a messages from his iPhone addressing it to your (that additional) e-mail address.

Check to see if you are both using the same Apple ID for iMessage.  If you are, one of you should go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID.  (You can continue to share the same ID for other services such as iTunes.)

What you say about Send Later timestamp is correct.
When you click Send or Send Later a time is set regardless of when you actually sent the Send Later email.

    Hi evan191,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if your messages aren't sending as iMessages:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
If you still can't send or receive iMessages
Ensure that iMessage is turned on in Settings > Messages.
To send and receive iMessages, your device must have a valid cellular or Wi-Fi data connection.
    iPhone: Troubleshooting Cellular data
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
iMessage registration validates your Apple ID for use with iMessage. If you are unable to activate iMessage, follow this article.
If an iMessage cannot be sent, it will be resent using SMS or MMS, depending on the content. You can turn this behavior on or off in Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
Verify that the Apple ID or phone number is listed in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
    Cheers,

    Hi Subhash,
I have done the troubleshooting but I didn't find any problem at server side. I will send you mail also with all EXBPA report and as well DC, HC and Mailbox servers' Application Log and System Log.
Below are the questions's answers which was asked by you:
    1.     Please check whether you can send email via Outlook.
I am not able to open the MS Outlook. Please check all details in this thread : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchange2010/thread/c491c5c7-7d6f-48ff-97fa-6bf83d94e53c
    2.     Please run EXBPA to have a health scan.
I have run the EXBPA and didn't see any critical Problem. I have took the screen shot and report. Please have a look in below screen shot link:

    3.     Please check application log, whether any error event logged there. They could come from ADAccess related error or etc.
I didn't see any ADAccess event on the server. For this I have left my lab PC open and I will check again.
    4.     We find that if mail .que gets corrupt, then this issue will occur, please try to move the affected user to another store and then test the issue.
I am facing this problem with all users (7 users). Anyway I moved one user from one server Mailbox Database (2mbx2010) to Other Server Mailbox Database (mbx2010). After that
    a) Rebooted the Workstation
    b) Login successfully with same user.
    c) Delete the Old MS Outlook Profile
    d) Create New profile for same user without any problem.
    e) Tried to login in MS Outlook and got the same error. : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchange2010/thread/c491c5c7-7d6f-48ff-97fa-6bf83d94e53c
    f) Open the OWA successfully for Same user.
    g) Tried to send mail but again mail went to Drafts Folder.
    5.     I noticed that you test the issue after you close outlook. I recommend you to reboot your pc and then access
mailbox via OWA to test the issue.
I tried you suggested option, but sorry it also couldn't help.
    6.  You also check your disk space.
All Servers have Enough Disk Space. Check the EXBPA Report.
    7. You may run EXTRA to get log information for further troubleshooting.
      Need more time for this.
    8. Please save application log, system log as *.evt file, then send them with EXTRA,EXBPA report to [email protected] .
I have sent it as your mentioned mail address OR, you can get the mentioned log from below link also:

  • When I send messages people are receiving them from my email account not my phone number

When I send an iMessage, people are receiving the message from my email that is attached to my apple account, not my phone number like usual. It will occasionally not allow me to send an iMessage either and will force me to send as SMS. Any ideas on how this can be fixed? In my settings it says all new conversations are started with my phone number, but it still doesn't change any ongoing conversations.

    Hi ATrunner,
Welcome to the Support Communities!   Just so that I can understand your question .... Are you saying that new messages that you send are working correctly with your phone number?  It is just the ongoing conversations that are displaying the email?   If so, I would suggest starting fresh conversations to those contacts. The article below provides troubleshooting steps for the most common issues with Messages:
iOS: Troubleshooting Messages - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS2755
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
Learn how to resolve issues with the Messages app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You'll learn what you need to send messages using SMS, MMS, and iMessage as well as how to resolve issues with each method.
Before you start troubleshooting, learn the difference between SMS, MMS, and iMessage. The first step to resolving an issue with iMessage is to update your iOS software and your carrier settings to the latest versions. If iMessage still has an issue, follow the steps below for your issue.
If you can't activate iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID
See how to troubleshoot iMessage activation. If you're using a China Telecom or au (KDDI) iPhone, you can activate iMessage only on your home network. While traveling internationally, you can't activate iMessage.
If you can't send and receive iMessages
You will need these to send and receive iMessages:
An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    iOS 5.0 or later
A cellular data connection or a Wi-Fi connection
A phone number or Apple ID registered with iMessage in Settings > Messages
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, follow these steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.
If your iMessages didn't transmit as SMS when iMessage was unavailable for use
Go to Settings > Messages > Send as SMS and turn on Send as SMS.
Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.
Make sure that you can send SMS with Settings > iMessage turned off.
If you want to transfer your SIM card or phone number to a device that doesn't support iMessage
Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage if you plan to transfer your SIM card or phone number from an iPhone to a device that doesn't support iMessage. If you don't, other iOS devices might continue to try to send you messages using iMessage, instead of using SMS or MMS, for up to 45 days.
If you can't send and receive SMS
You will need these to send and receive SMS:
    An iPhone
A strong cellular network connection through a cellular network provider
A domestic SMS plan from your cellular provider (You might need an international messaging plan to send SMS to an international contact. Contact your carrier for more information)
A roaming SMS plan when you use a cellular provider's network that is different from your billing cellular provider's network (Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.)
To resolve issues sending and receiving SMS, follow these steps
Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
Make sure that you have a cellular network signal in the status bar of your iPhone. If there's no signal, learn more about troubleshooting no service.
    Restart your iPhone.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Remove your SIM card and insert it again.
If you still can't send or receive SMS, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact who's trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that you're using the area code with the contact's phone number. When sending messages internationally, you also need to use the contact's international code.
If you're using a "Pay as you go" SMS plan, make sure it has enough available balance. Contact your carrier if you're unsure of your SMS plan or the available balance.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact from the Contacts app. Send a new message to the contact.
Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process might not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
Contact your carrier to confirm that you're provisioned for sending SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
Contact your carrier to verify there are no blocks or filters placed on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
If you can't send and receive MMS
You will need these to send and receive MMS:
    An iPhone 3G or later
    iOS 3.1 or later
A cellular data connection (MMS isn't available if you're using only Wi-Fi)
A domestic MMS plan from your cellular provider. You might need an international messaging plan to send MMS to an international contact (Contact your carrier for more information.)
A roaming MMS when using a cellular provider's network that is different from your billing cellular provider's network (Learn more about roaming and contact your carrier for more information.)
To resolve issues with sending and receiving MMS, follow these steps
Go to Settings and turn airplane mode off.
Go to Settings > Messages and turn MMS Messaging on.
Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Cellular Data on.
Go to Settings > Cellular and turn Data Roaming on if you're roaming on a cellular provider network that is different from your billing provider's network.
Make sure that you have a cellular data connection in the status bar of your iPhone.
Go to Settings and turn Wi-Fi off. Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify that you have a data connection. Turn Wi-Fi back on to continue using Wi-Fi for other features. If your cellular data connection isn't available, follow these steps.
Make sure that you can send and receive SMS. If you can't send and receive SMS, see the "Issues with sending and receiving SMS" section, above. MMS might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn more about which network your phone supports.
    Restart your iPhone.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
Remove your SIM card and insert it again.
If you still can't send or receive MMS, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Go to Settings > Messages and turn on group messaging if you're sending a group message.
Make sure that you're using the area code with the contact's phone number. When you send messages internationally, you also need the contact's international code.
If you're using a "Pay as you go" MMS plan, make sure it has enough available balance. If you're unsure of your MMS plan or available balance, contact your carrier.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact from the Contacts app. Send a new message to the new contact.
Back up and restore your iPhone as new.
If your carrier has recently ported your phone number, the porting process might not be complete. Contact your carrier to confirm that the porting process is complete.
Contact your carrier to verify that you're provisioned to send SMS and are in an area with cellular coverage.
Contact your carrier to verify that there aren't blocks or filters on your wireless account preventing you from sending SMS.
Your carrier might require modified APN settings to use MMS.
