Oh boy, I think I jumped on the bandwagon too soon...

This post contains a little frustration from a long day's session of trying to code!
So, I spent the day really diggin' deep in Cocoa and XCode for my first time. I anxiously waited for the arrival of Leopard to begin my adventures in this new territory. I mean, why start coding with one thing when another thing, new and better, was on the horizon? Right? Wrong.
I'm not completely inept of coding, though, the focus of my last 5 years has been web/flash development. I started tinkering around with Adobe's AIR the past few months, and after awhile, I really wanted to stop "trying to make believable desktop apps" and go for the real thing. So basic coding terminology is not new to me.
And that's why I found today so frustrating. Hands down to you expert Cocoa Coders (you guys are amazing). After browsing through numerous documentation Apple has on XCode 3.0, Object-C 2.0 programming, I was still dazed and confused. I spent hours browsing the internet and Apple's documentation for tutorials/getting started guides/(even these forums!) ANYTHING that could get me going. I couldn't even figure out how to right a simple if/else conditional statement to save the life of me! All books, documentation, examples (except the ones Apple provides) were all outdated and based on the previous versions. A good foundation, but very hard to follow if you hadn't used any of the previous versions before.
I wasn't expecting there to be much on it, since it's so new, but I was shocked to see that I couldn't find anything to really get me started. I even took a break and browsed Barnes & Noble today (looking for Aaron's book), and all of it had examples that were based on XCode 2 and everything started to turn jibberish past the first couple of examples.
Have a joined in during the wrong time? I know there'll be some new XCode/Cocoa books out next year (or so says the Barnes & Noble customer service lady). But for a novice looking to start (and I've noticed MANY of these same types of posts here), has anyone found anything to jumpstart a novice with the new goods?

Aaron's book is the best teaching book out there and I highly recommend it. He said at WWDC he was going to update it with bindings tutorials and he will presumably update it for the new Xcode then as well, but you need help now so I'd go ahead with that. The basics -the syntax, calling procedures, etc - of Obj-C won't change so I think you'll still get plenty out of it.
If your previous programming experience has given you an understanding of looping, arrays and variable passing you should be okay to start with Aaron's book and go from there. If you understand those elements then once you get the smalltalk-like syntax of Obj-C down it's much more straight-forward than it looks at first. (I never believed the people who said "If you know C and some OOP you can learn Obj-C in an afternoon." until I did it.) It has a bunch of stuff probably not ready for but it still has some really key basic stuff in it.
There is a certain amount of Xcode/IB specific stuff to muck through but that is true of any platform specific programming you learn. The good thing about his work is that it is a step-by-step teaching process so you build and learn the things little and once you get the general concepts down it becomes very easy to start writing your own code. Cocoa is such a large entity that the only way to really learn it is to have a program you want to write and learn the elements you care about as you need them. For most routine tasks in Cocoa if you're working really hard at it you've probably missed something that's there to make your life easier, but sometimes the only way to find that out is to do it the hard way first.

Presenter 10 jumps to next slide too soon in html 5

I created a presentation from powerpoint 2013 64bit, set to FM quality sound using Presenter 10.0.0 build 196. It is delivered by an Adobe Connect server. The presentations created this way are jumping to the next slide too soon when viewed online, which cuts off the last few words. I have to manually add blank space at the end of the audio for each slide and then upload it multiple times to check that it is OK. Is anyone else having this issue, and is there a known solution?

I have tried the remove and re-add and it makes no difference. I can't now get the Presenter presentation with video in mp4 format to display or play. I am not sure if it is there or not as when viewing on an iPad it says it is buffering but never actually stops buffering. I can see it on my computer fine and it plays fine, but some of the reason for publishing to html 5 is so as it can be seen by people using tablets. I just can't seem to get it to work no matter what I try.
So to recap:
1. using a presentation published using an older version of Presenter that contains flv videos
2. republishing the presentation using Presenter 10 to a Connect Content Library using HTML 5
3. have to convert the flv to mp4
4. on a computer using a variety of browsers the presentation plays fine.
5. on a tablet (iPad tried at this stage) the slides without video plays fine, the slides with video just continually says buffering
On the second point of Presenter throwing up an error message, it's not so much that it throws up the error message as I can cancel that. It's more to do with the fact that it throws it up each time I try to publish a presentation that includes video that is of a certain duration. I have followed the whole kill the process as suggested and while this does indeed stop the problem it just comes back when I open PowerPoint again and try to publish.

I was very satisfied with my phone for a couple of months but nowadays I've an annoying issue with the video recordings of my Nokia Lumia 920. I've noticed in the past few weeks that there's a "bleep" or a "jump" in each video I take. (Nokia Camera software, Lumia Black, RM-821_eu_hungary_434)
It's very dissapointing because every video is let's say faulty at some point of the video.
For example please take a look at the following video at 0:34 where not just the video "jumps" but the audio recording also stops for a couple of seconds:

The interesting thing is that during the next 21 minutes it did not make any mistakes while recording.

If you're interested in debugging the issue I can send you somehow (by FTP or so) the original files as well.
I have got more videos which are like this and it was shown like this on the phone's screen as well so I've ruled out the possibility to have an issue while transfering it to my PC.
I'm assuming that possibly there's something wrong with the Lumia 920's RAM memory or with the 32GB internal storage drive, e.g.: let's say bad sector like on hard drives.
The phone recently had it's first freezing while I was reading my facebook the phone suddenly went black and restarted.
I still have 1,5 year warranty on my phone but I've bought ~150 km far away so I hopeI won't need to travel there and wait for weeks and to travel there again to get my phone back! What do you suggest?
Is it possible that it's rather a software issue not a hardware? Or should I return my phone to the retail shop or is there any downloadable software patch to correct this issue? Is this a known issue to you?
I've noticed one more thing: when I'm using my phone for e.g. like 10 minutes it's back cover gets warmer and warmer somewhere around the camera; I thought first it's because of the higher processor and battery usage but I don't think it's normal. The "heat issue" is also present while playing with a game.
Info: my battery lasts for 1,5 day or so by very moderate usage, is it normal? (4 times a day wifi for 5-10 minutes, max. 1 pcs one minute call per day)

Hi All,
I'm shocked about this device as you know I was disappointed due to the video recording glitches previously, but what yesterday happened is the worst I could ever imagine: I've recorded 3 videos and from this 3 videos 2 are unplayable even on my phone and on my PC, it gives an error message: "The video failed to play".
The 2 files can't be seen in the camera roll only by using Pocket File Manager.
I was able to copy all files to my computer:

WP_20140802_21_22_19_Pro.mp4 - 3939 658 131 bytes - unplayable

To me these 2 videos are really very important, please help me to recover them! Please tell me, how you want me to send the files as they're, ~4GB each, by using Onedrive or how?
If this issue won't be solved I'm considering NOT TO BUY a Nokia again! Can it be a hardware related issue, e.g. faulty internal flash? Should I return the phone to the retail shop?

Other than hitting space to go down to the next line, I don't think there is a shortcut.

How do I jump to the top/bottom of a List view?

Hello,
I am a recent Windows convert. I have done my best to search forums and website to understand keystrokes, but so far have been unable to find the answer to this question. Acually, I am fairly certain I must have seen the answer, but did not recognize it as such.
By way of example (and the place where this concern is most acute for me) is in iTunes, when looking at a list of songs. I have thousands of songs, and paging through them (found that keystroke combination! :-) is getting tiring. If sitting on a single song in the list, I want to be able to jump to either the start or the end of the list of songs. How do I accomplish this? (short of paging a zillion times)
And, in case it makes a difference (I am not familair with all Mac keyboards) I am using the keyboard on a MacBook Pro (so I may not have all the keys found on a full sized Mac desktop keyboard for example).

I sat here trying all kinds of key combinations, but the moment I read your answer I realized 2 things:
That I had never tried that combination and
It was the most logical since I already was using fn-up arrow and fn-down arrow to page up and down.
I kept thinking it was still the up and down arrows, but with a different modifier key. Narrow thinking on my part.

Photo Page with lots of pix - any way to jump to the last page?

I have a photo album with 112 pix in it, and it's set to display 21 photos per page w/ 3 columns. This makes for a total of 6 pages.
The way the page navigation shows up, at least in Safari, is as follows:

Oddly, in iWeb it shows:
< 1 2 3 4 5>
I continually am adding photos to this album, but I think that people may not realize that there are more than 4 pages. The only clue is that the right arrow is not grayed out, which is too subtle.
If you click on the "4", and then click the right arrow, it now displays 1-5 like in iWeb. Clicking on it one more time then displays 2-6.
If all of the pages can't be displayed for space reasons, some indication of how many pages total would be helpful, and/or a "last" link to jump to the last page.
On this discussions site, for example, doing a search with multiple pages of results brings up the following:
Pages: 12 *| 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 | Next |*
This makes it obvious how much content there is, and how far you have to go to get to the end. Is there any way to get something similar on an iWeb page? I think people are missing my latest additions because they don't know they're there, and there's no easy way to get to the newest stuff.

I couldn't get the other "jump to the last page" script to work at all; it winds up screwing up the display to where it shows two pages at a time slightly offset from one another.
It's more likely that you web host servers take time to serve the page and its element, I ran into similar problem while helping out another person in this forum.
But, while I'm finally seeing the page count directly above the page navigation numbers, it's indicating that there are 7 pages when in fact there are 8, and I'm wondering why it disappears after changing to any other page (it doesn't reappear even on the first page without doing a refresh). I've tried this with the same results in Safari 3.1.2 & Firefox 3.01.

I also found that the bottom paginate navigation cause problem, so I added more code to handle that.
The result may not be desired but cause the page count flashed when you go from one page to the next, quite annoying. Give this a try:

Trackpad draging and jumping around the screen

trackpad works for a while but then the trackpad begins to drag (when I move my finger around the trackpad, the curser either doesent move at all or moves very slowly) and the curser begins to jump around the screen when the trackpad and computer isent being touched. I tried to connect a wireless mouse and it too bagan with the same problems. if anyone has any ideas of how to fix it, im all ears.

Yes i've gotten this twice.
Once from not quite legitmate software.
Once from a sketch NSFK site.
Both times, it was easily resolved for me by shutting down.
Follow the procedure to reset SMC controller ( make sure you do this properly ) Guides are available on Apple's support page.
Immediatly after the SMC reset before any other reboot reset the PRAM several times.
then reboot as normal.
...I'm not sure what exactly is going on.. I think some setting is getting adjusted and set EFI that's why normal reboots, safe mode, nothing else solves it. One of the more eye opening aspect of it for me was when I rebooted my macbook into Windows7 via bootcamp and it still presisted. At that point it had NOTHING to do w/ OS software, plist, safe mode or myraid of other suggestions you'll encounter.

Well, I think I know why the rules are not working. The alias mailbox is being listed as another mail folder and not as an actual inbox so the rules are not being applied. While I wish the rules would work, I will continue to manually mark some of the emails as spam.
As for the second issue with emails vanishing, I am waiting to see if it happens again. I think it must happen when it is syncing the data but I am not sure that it happens all the time. Today the previous emails seem to be their and it grabbed the new email so I don't know what happened with the vanishing email. Anyway this can be closed since I believe the main issue has been solved as being a setup issue with Yahoo alias email account.

Outlook Email jumps to the top of the mailbox when I change the flag or category

We have some employees with a shared mailbox, this mailbox is sorted by category.
When changing category on a email, the window jumps to the top of the list. It only does this when sorted by category.
We have tried many things:
1. New Outlook profiles
2. New OS with Office 2013
This started after we moved from Outlook 2010 and Hosted Exchange to Outlook 2013 and Office 365
Any help would be appreciated greatly

I think this "issue" is by design.
Since the mailbox is sorted by categories, when an email is given a category, let's say Orange Category, the email will be grouped into
Orange Category, see the image below:
These emails with no category will be grouped into (none).
These categories can be listed whether on the top or at the bottom in the list, it depends on whether the list is in ascending order or descending order(A to Z or
Z to A).
An easy way to not make it jump to the top, change sort by to others.

Table jumps to the left with long pages

I am using Dreamweaver CS3 and it works fine. But when I
paste long tekst (lyrics for an artist) the pages makes a small
"jump" to the left just a 4 - 5 mm. I use centered tables. Does
anyone have a solution to this problem?

I found that clearing the "Up Next" list fixes the problem. But I have to clear that list everytime I just want to hear just that one album. Each time I select on song on the album, the "Up Next" list builds it's own list rather than just play through the album. I think this has something to do with the issue. How can I fix this?!?!

How / When Does a Device Jump from the 2.4 GHz Network to the 5.0 GHz Network

I understand -- through another thread that I started -- that the Guest Network will be both 2.4 GHz as well as 5.0 GHz....I would like to understand how / when does a device jump from the 2.4 GHz network to the 5.0 GHz network as I understand that: the 2.4 GHz network is slower but has greater range relative to the 5.0 GHz network.

The reason that I purchased an Apple router is the hope that it will work better than some of the other routers I have tried as far as the 5 GHz / 2.4 GHz dual banding is concerned because in most of these cases I have had to disable the 5 GHz band to maintain a reliable internet connection...hopefully the Aiport Extreme will not require me to do so [i.e. it will work]!
With respect to *BOTH* the Primary Network and the Guest Network being dual band I can only conclude that this work because there are essentially two separates networks [i.e. 10.o.x.x and 172.16.x.x] that are using the send / receive configuration capabilities.

Thinking of switching to the Q10

Dear all,
I am thinking of switching to the Q10 from the iPhone, but there are certain key features that I really depend on and would like to seek your kind advice as to whether BB10 is able to do it.
1. I am using the Gmail app on the iPhone and it has the ability to save the frequently used email addresses that I send to in my browser and autocomplete them when I send it out in the iPhone Gmail app. Will BB10 be able to do this?
2. The ability send as different email addresses as all my work mail gets forwarded to my Gmail account. There are some workarounds that I came across on Crackberry.com and was wondering if anyone knows if the bugs have been worked around i.e. some mails don't come through because a secondary label has been assigned to them in Gmail.
If the above 2 are working soundly, I will most certainly jump on the Q10 as I really miss the keyboard!

Email on BB10 is not browser-based. Rather, the on-device email app uses an algorythm to provide you with suggested recipients to emails you create, which you can select or ignore. The suggestions change over time based on your usage patterns. If you want one of the suggested recipients, a quick click on it populates the "to" field with that recipient. So, while it may operate differently than iPhone, it sounds like it indeed does what you desire.

When you forward, you can choose any "from" account that you have integrated to your BB10 device. If you simply reply, it is restricted to coming from the account into which it arrived on the BB10 device. I don't know if this is the "bug" you mention or not, but this is how it functions.

Why do my TOC subentry titles jump to the left margin?

As I select lower-level TOC entries (books and/or pages), the title jumps to the left margin (that is, the pane scrolls right). This renders all the surrounding entries illegible.
In the attached outdent_toc.gif, note the location of the "Add-on..." page entry, which is actually a 5th-level TOC entry, as shown in the margin_toc.gif picture, which is the result of scrolling back to the left.
This is a regression from RH X5.

I can only think either it is an upgrade thing (I'll look later) or something else in your project. This TOC is from a RH8 created project and, as you can see, it remains firmly left aligned. The end text of Book Four does not get kicked out to the left.
I did note you are not showing the default books. Relevant?

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.
