OLAP Universe and drill through with Essbase

Hi all
Has anyone created an OLAP universe on top of Essbase that allows the user to drill through back to an Oracle database?
If anyone has can you please let me know how you did this.
Thank you and kind regards,
Dean

Hi,
There is no way to activate drill-through from Essbase to any other database within OLAP universes.
If you are using Web Intelligence you have 2 alternatives:
<li> The first one is to create 2 data providers (1 on Essbase and 1 on Oracle) and synchronize them.
This is not really a drill thorugh operation but you have both data sources in sync in the same document.
<li> The second option is to create 2 Web Intelligence documents (1 on Essbase and 1 on Oracle) and then parameterize the Essbase document to use Opendoc capabilities (hyperlink) to dril-through on the Oracle document.

How can I achieve drill through from an Essbase cube to an Oracle database?
Is there an option in OLAP universes to achieve this?

  • OLAP Universe and Voyager connection on BW Queries

    Hi,
I have successfully created an OLAP Universe and Voyager Connections pointing to SAP BW Cubes. I want to do the same connecting to the SAP BW Queries. But when i get connected to the SAP BW system, I get a dispaly of just the Cubes and I am not able to see any Queries. We have created multiple queries in BW pointing the Cubes. But none of them are listed down.
Please let me know if this is an issue with the rights given to user which we use for logging into SAP system or some other reason.
Any suggestions and answers will be really helpful.
    Thanks,
    Suma

    Hi Suma,
Please check if you have released the BW query for OLE DB for OLAP. Goto properties of the Query and on the Advanced tab see if the check box for "Allow External Access to this Query" is checked or not. If it is not checked then please check that box for the query to appear in your Universe Designer.

How to drill through from Essbase to Oracle in BIEE?
Edited by: Aaron Zhong Zhenhua on Oct 21, 2008 11:19 AM

    Physical layer:
    - Create a complex join between the Essbase generation and your detail table. E.g.: Gen6,Market = ATTRIBS.CNTRY
    BMM layer:
    - Go to the logical table "Market" (for example) and drag the ATTRIBS.CNTRY column on to the Gen6,Market column.
    - Now pull over the other attributes from your Oracle table into the Market logical table...this will result in a second LTS within the sources.
    - Drag and drop the logical columns you just got from Oracle on the lowest level of the Market dimension hierarchy. In this example, onto Gen6,Market.
    - Alternatively, create levels below Gen6.
    - Make sure your LTS have the correct content levels set
    Presentation layer:
    - Pull your chagnes through to your presentation catalog(s).
    Should be all.

  • Integrating OLAP Universe and Non OLAP Universe

    Hi Experts,
I am facing a problem in integrating an OLAP universe and a universe on two dimensional database. Let me explain the scenario:
I have one BW query which gives plants A, B and C sales details. I have one more database (SQL Server), which gives plants D and E sales details. The requirement is to show all the plants (A, B, C, D and E) sales in Xcelsius Dashboard. For this i followed the below approach:
    1. To bring SAP plants data, i created universe on BW Query (OLAP Universe)
    2. Created universe on SQL Server tables to bring Non-SAP plants data. (General Universe)
Now my doubt is, is there any approach or functionality to join or merge these two universes (OLAP and Non-OLAP). I think we can merge Non-OLAP universes. If this is not possible then what is the best approach.
Can anyone help me on this.
    Thanks & Regards
    Ramakrishna Kamurthy

    Hi,
I n order to merge prompts in Web Intelligence query panel, they must be identoical: same question, same datatype.
But you have to pay attention to the fact that only one list of values will be used for the twio data sources.
So it the two data sources have different keys (or tecnnical names in SAP) then one query will work and the other not.
Again if you try to synchronize those two data providers in WebI you will hit the same issues: keys and caption might be  different.
So I suggest to do some SQL transformation on the relational universe to match keys and captions in SAP BW data source.
I recommend this because SAP BW does not support custom calculations that return string or dates: only numeric values are supported.
So in that case if you are sure that keys and captions will be identical in the two sources you will be able to merge prompts and synchronize both sources.

  • Essbase Studio and Drill Through

I have created a ASO application in essbase studio through text data source and succesfuly deployed it to essbase server but in smartview and spreadsheet add in drill through reports are not reflecting.
Standard SQL is also not generating while creating drill through reports.
    Error:
Error in the statement interpret. Line = 1657.
Error in the make select statement. Line = 1.
Unable to join filter to the rest of the query. Terminating operation...
This is EPM 11.1.2.0.00 on windows 2008 64 bit
    Any help?

    Hii
    Philip thanks ..
you are right in saying that drill-through is not available for txt data at least in Studio and Integration ..
Essbase provides URL-based drill-through access from Essbase client reporting interfaces (such as Smart View or Oracle Hyperion Financial Reporting, Fusion Edition) to information located on Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications and Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications.
In Integration Services and Essbase Studio documentation, drill-through refers to linking a multidimensional database cell to further data; for example, to transaction-level data that is stored in a relational source.

  • OLAP Universe and Invalid MDX error

    Hi all,
I'm new to OLAP/BW universes and I've run into some strange issues. I've generated a universe based on a Bex query and I'm getting invalid mdx errors when drilling on a couple of the hierarchies. There has been no customisation of the universe so I'm not sure how invalid mdx can be generated??? I've placed Product and Profit center hierarchies and a single Key Figure onto a report and when I drill down on the hierarchies I get the error. It only seems to happen when I have more than one hierarchy on the report. A single hierarchy with Key Figures does not cause an error.
    Business Objects Edge 3.1 SP2
    SAP Int Kit SP2
    OS: Linux
    BW 701 Level 6
Executing the mdx in MDXTEST gives the error "Invalid MDX command with {...}"
    Webi log entry below.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Issue has been resolved by applying the following notes

"1440912 - WebI reports incorrect after BW 7.1.5 upgrade: Cannot drill below Level 5 of Hierarchy."

  • Planning drill through with EPMA members

I have a webform and it displays a field 'Asset Desc' which is member of Accounts Dim. This member is only at EPMA and not in Essbase.
Once the Data is entered through webform, I should be able to drill-thru with 'Asset Desc' along with other details.

What do you mean by it is not there in Essbase? If it is showing up in webform and you can enter data it'll be there in Essbase.
If you perform a search for Planning drill through you'll get lots of article.

  • OLAP universes and Crystal Reports

    Hi everybody,
as we know Crystal Reports can not use OLAP universes as data source. The details about that have been discussed several times in this forum, for example in the threads:
Logon failed with Universe data source
Logon failed when trying to connect to a SAP BW related universe
The possible data sources are perfectly explained in the Blog from Ingo Hilgefort.
    /people/ingo.hilgefort/blog
But... why these connection type is not possible???
From my point of view these missing functionality comes with a lot of drawbacks. The universe has a lot of advantages, and first of all it is isolating the business users form technical complexities. But if the business users can not access to the OLAP universe they have to face to technical complexities.
Another point: Consider a perfect integrated SAP BW environment with Business Objects Enterprise and Crystal and Xcelsius. The administrator can now define a perfect universe structure, tailored on the particular business needs of the end users. This universe structure can be used for Web Intelligence and Xcelsius (QaaWS). But for the Crystal Reports I have to define another interface to the BW data sources, which can not be done by the Administrator.
    So, some open questions:
    - Why is the connect to OLAP universes not possible - does that make sense?
    - Will the connectivity be available in future - is that part of the actual roadmap?
    - What is the recommanded approach for a business case as shown above, meaning how can I isolate my business users from technical complexities by using SAP BW as data source for Crystal Report.
Thank you for any comments and advises,
    Sebastian

    Hello to everybody.
When I was starting to work on the BO products I had exactly the same question.
Why were the OLAP Universes not supported in Crystal Reports?
Well, I have a few facts in my mind, I explained the decision of SAP in this case with for myself.
    1. Very simple and my first thought: monetary aspects. There excist the SAP Integration Kit. These drivers work pretty fine. So for what reason SAP should invest money in an other technique to access the SAP data?
    2. It excist a server solution for small and medium-sized companies named Crystal Reports Server. I'm not sure but I don't think this package contains the Universe Designer. If acces on SAP data over the OLAP Universes would be possible, the Crystal Reports Server customers should also get the Designer tool and the Translation tool, too. Less profit margin.
    3. Creating a Universe out of OLAP data destroys the moredimensionality. Universes are flat constructs. So maybe it makes no sense to use this meta layer.
    4. A typical Crystal Report user isn't someone who had no technical understanding. For me these users should know and understand the data source very well. So an Universe would limit there the possibilities for building a report.
    5. I think the SAP itself did not know where the journey should go with this toolset. A roudmap that changes severalt times in one year an many many rumours about these tools proof this.
So I think maybe we just have to wait a few months and the support for the OLAP Universes will come with a fix pack.   Who knows...
    Greetings,
    Sebastian

  • Error when drill down with essbase hierarchy

    Hi ,
I am displaying one bar chart with, one Ragged hierarchy dimension "Region" ( structure : total region - > India , US -> India south , US south -> chennai , California) and "revenue" (measure) .
Sometime's the drill down is happening smoothly (region - > sub region - > city) but sometimes its throwing below error :

FYI , I have a product prompt attached with this graph . i.e , when user selects "total product" and drilling down its
working perfectly but when selects "network products" its throwing the mentioned error .

  • Drill through report - Essbase Studio

    Hi,
Need some help on drill through reports.
I have created a drill through report in essbase studio. I am able to drill down to the source table in SmartView. But the problem is, when I drill, it is showing me all the records in the table instead of showing me the records only for the intersection that I am drilling.

You have to trick Studio into thinking the cube was built from Studio. In my session on Advanced Studio Tips and Tricks at the KScope conference at the end of June I detail a couple of ways to do this. It is too detailed to put into a post here

  • Enabling Drill Through causing Essbase Integration Server hang.

During the automation process using olapicmd command and *.cbs we are enabling Drill Through which is causing Essbase Integration Server hang.
We don't get any error message in log file. Plus sometime its run successful , also when we run this manually going to EIS console, it run fine.

    Hi Kishore,
    Thanks for your prompt reply......
I have checked in before itself the Drill down option ......
I am not able to understand whats the issue we are able to drill through in EIS till last level but after improting in OBIEE we are not able to drill through to last level, in the last level it showing no results....
I am not able to find the solution any other suggestions ?

  • Enabling drill through from Essbase cube to drill through report

The requirement is that I keep summary level information in the Essbase cube and detailed granular information (order level) in a relational table.I would like to enable drill through between the cube and the report.
Please advise what would be the best approach considering the current system architecture that is outlined below.( Hyperion suite 11.1.2.1).
Would also like to know drill thru vs hybrid analysis options.
    1) ASO/BSO cube is populated through Oracle Data Integrator
    2) The relational transactional table is also poulated through ODI.
    3) The cube would hold summary level info while thr drill through report should provide the order level details in the same context as chosen in the cube.
Would appreciate guidance on the best way forward.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anirban

Incidentally we had been trying to use Essbase studio as an option. But there are 2 oints that we are trying to investigate.
    1) Can we bypass deployment of data and metadata everytime through Essbase studio after the initial outline is delpoyed? In the system architecture the relational tables are populated using ODI. We would like to load the data and metadata through ODI into the cube. Eeven then can we implement drill thru bypassing deployment through Essbase Studio?
    2) If Essbase studio is imperative for drill through then what are the batch automation options for deployment through Essbase studio? Ideally the option should be after the relational tables are populated through ODI then the Essbase deployment should be invoked and batch script should load the data and metadata through Essbase Studio.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Anirban
